A very special welcome to Rishabh Bhan, Tyler Malcolm, Kali Clinch, Oliver Mitchell and their families to Kaikorai Primary School!

PRINCIPALS MESSAGE
Dear Parents, Over the coming weeks you may start to hear news about proposed changes to the way schools will be managed in the future. These proposed changes (tilted Investing in Educational Success) could signicantly alter education in New Zealand, and as such the Board would like to raise this matter for your attention. In particular we would like you to pay special attention to this new policy which has recently been released by the Minster of Education, Hekia Parata, and to think about how it might effect the learning of your child. This new policy would release an additional $359 million dollars into education (something the Board welcomes) but we are concerned that this money will largely be directed to increasing the salaries of only 10% of all Principals and Teachers, and that this will have little direct impact on your childs learning. Part of the policy is to have Executive Principals and Expert Teachers out of their school or class for two days a week supporting up to 10 other schools. A large amount of the support would focus on National Standards which, although important, only makes up a narrow part of educating the child as a whole. It has been estimated that each school could benet by as much as $125,000 per school per year if this money was to be redistributed in other ways. This is a very complex issue and we encourage all parents to take the time and form an opinion on this issue. Kind Regards Kaikorai Primary School Board of Trustees

Junior News Swimming is in full swing now with the Jill Clarke swim school. Now that each class has been grouped according to ability and needs, it is full on practise time for the next 5 days. Having a 9-day slot is going to make a huge difference to the progress the children make. You may like to take the chance to build on the progress your child makes this session by booking holiday swimming lessons. Bees, bees and more bees keep the children buzzing as our topic continues. What a fantastic time we had with Peter and Petra Dearden and the bee team from the University. They came to each class where we made candles, extracted honey, made bee hats, dressed up as beekeepers and looked at REAL live bees in a box. Mr Clarke even turned into a beekeeper. We will continue with bees until the last week when we have some fun Easter activities planned in classes. Middle News Great fun was had by the Middle Syndicate at Warrington Beach. Everyone loved exploring and observing different communities in the different habitats in the rock pools, on the mudats and on the beach. Thanks to all the parents who were able to join us. We do appreciate your help.

Senior News
The senior classes have just completed a very rewarding and challenging week of outdoor education

activities. For the year 6 children this was a four-day camp at Camp Iona near the Herbert Forest. Their experiences included abseiling down a cliff face, conducting a search and rescue exercise to nd an injured parent, developing archery skills, using air pistols, running tness challenges in the mud and sliding down a slippery water slide. On the third day they all went kayaking and yachting on McKerrows Pond. There were many other activities as well. They enjoyed their week and have identied many highlights. The other senior class children also had a week of outdoor activities. They trekked up Mount Cargill, visited the Botanic Gardens for orienteering, and walked around the local neighbourhood learning about some of Dunedins early history. They also swam at Moana Pool, experiencing water survival skills, diving, snorkeling, the hydroslide and the wave pool. It was a fantastic week for everyone. Our writing programme this week is focusing on letter writing as we all write thank you letters to all the parents and teachers who helped during the week.

Student Work A Fishery Ofcer a very important job in our community Jamie Beaton is a shery ofcer. He tries to protect the underwater environment particularly paua and sh. There are only 5 shery ofcers covering from about the Catlins to north Timaru. I wonder if that's because it isnt a popular job. I wouldnt think so because he said he loved his job. Fishery ofcers venture up and down the coast checking that everybody is obeying the shing rules. Jamie comes from Scotland and came to NZ. Before he was a shery ofcer he was a police man and a sports coach . By Taisei Age 8 Parent Group
