Duct
Stand the cabinet on solid ground without tilting or bending. Check the
following items:
1. Check whether there are any protrusions, depressions, scratches,
peelings, blisters, or taints on its appearance. Check whether fastening
screws are loose, lost, or misplaced.
2. Check whether the subrack installation keeps rectangle form. Check
whether there are any damages or ruptures on the plug-in slot guide
rails.
3. Check whether all parts and accessories necessary for installation are
complete and correct. Check whether there are any broken and loose
connections.
4. Check whether there are any scratches or damages to modules,
components, or devices. Check whether they match the checklist.
ZTE takes main responsibility to check electrically sensitive devices.
Equipment Handover
Both parties must sign Unpacking & Accepting Report after the completion
and inspection of the equipment, and hand them over to the user. Each
party holds one copy of Unpacking & Accepting Report and the project
supervisor gives feed back within seven days of the inspection conclusion
in the Unpacking & Accepting Report to the vendor for documentation.

ZXG10 BS21 BS may be installed in different engineering installation mode
according to geographical environment of the site and actual requirements:
dual-pole installation, iron tower installation and ground installation. The
dual-pole installation mode is applicable for single BS21, while the ground
installation mode is advisable for two or three BS21s. The ground
installation falls into installations on hillside, under iron tower, on roof, and
in the equipment room. Simple bounding walls are necessary for
installations on hillside or under iron tower to ensure the safety of the BS
and normal operation of the telecom equipment.
Figure 5 shows general workflow for ZXG10 BS21 hardware installation.

Note: Non-professionals can only maintain the equipment under the instructions of
professionals on the site.
Replacing any parts or altering the equipment may result in unexpected
dangers. Forbid replacing parts or modifying the equipment without
permission.
Check the installation mode according to the equipment room environment,
engineering design specifications, and user requirements before
installation of the cabinet, module and antenna, and feeder system.
Do be careful during the installation of ZXG10-BS21 (V2.2).

equipment.

ZXG10 BS21 is outdoor equipment enclosed in sealed cabinet, which
resists water, dust, burglary, rodent nuisance, and has the
electromagnetic shield performance. It features compact overall structure,
reasonable layout and perfect ventilation, and heat dissipation. Its design
takes full account of the safety and convenience of installation, operation,
and maintenance.
ZXG10 BS21 may be installed on dual poles or ground platform according
to installation environment.
Installation on Dual Poles
Figure 6 shows its workflow.

Installation on Dual Concrete Poles
Install the service platform and other engineering parts on two concrete
poles at 2020 mm ~ 2050 mm apart from each other. Refer to Appendix B
for overall installation.
1. Burial depth of the concrete poles
Table 7 gives advisable minimal burial depths of the concrete poles
according to the checking calculation of overturning stability.

The height of the pole depends on actual conditions (12 m in height is
better, with diameter about 400 mm at the bottom). It requires special
treatment in the case of lofty soil, quicksand, and high water table.
Prefabricated or cast reinforced concrete is used as the pedestal of the
pole, L W D = 800 mm 800 mm 2,100 mm.
2. Construction requirements of the concrete pole
i. Follow the standards for filling pit: Fill it with smashed clods and
tamp up to 300 mm height. It requires more tamps or additional
reinforced measures for pit with lofty soil. Add a layer of anti-
settling soil on top, keeping depth of soil no less than diameter of
the pit opening.
ii. Use Galvanized wire ropes as the stay wire for the concrete pole to
reinforce the concrete pole.
Use Galvanized steel strand as the stay wire.
The cross-sectional area of the steel strand must be over 35 mm
2
.
The angle between stay wire and concrete pole is preferably 45 or
less in limited terrain, but 30 at least. For a stay wire across road,
the vertical distance of the centers facing the road must be no less
than 6 m, and the vertical distance to the road surface must be no
less than 4.5 m.
iii. Load requirements of the concrete pole
Permanent load (estimated total 400 kg):
Consider 2.5 m in length, 15 kg in weight, and 0.8 m
2
in windward
area for every BTS antenna.
Consider 30 kg in weight for the antenna poles (two).
The weight of the ZXG10 BS21 is about 165 kg.
The weight of the lightning arrester and flush flow cables is 50 kg.
The other structural parts weigh 90 kg (including beam, service
platform, and clamps).

Variable loads:
Load resulting from installation, maintenance or coverage of ice
(snow) is 150 kN/m

Wind load: Compliant with the wind load characteristics in local
weather conditions.
Weight of the operator: Consider the weight of three to four people.
Note: Reinforce the concrete pole with cable wire in the related directions (the
reverse direction to the tension of aerial optical cables; reverse direction to the
tension of 220 V power wires) to balance the strains in all directions.
3. Anti-lightning and grounding requirements of the concrete pole
i. Install lightning arrester on the top of the concrete pole. All the
equipment, antennas, and feeders of the ZXG10 BS21 must be
within the 30 ~ 45 protection range of it.
ii. Grounding block must be near the concrete pole, and connect the
leading cables of the lightning arresters correctly. The grounding
block must be preferably vertical or horizontal. Table 8 shows
minimal specifications of the grounding block and wire. The
grounding wire must be made of 4 40 (mm) flat steel.

iii. Installation of grounding block and cable: The specifications and
buried depth should suffice. The grounding block must be
connection securely. Clean the connection for rust and deposition.
iv. Observe the following standards after the connection of grounding
block in overlap welding manner:
Overlap length of the flat steel must be two times of its width and
welded on four sides.
Overlap length of the round steel must be six times of its diameter
and welded on both sides.
Overlap length must be six times of the round steels diameter for
the connection of round steel with flat steel.
There must be proper welding on both sides of the contact position
of flat or any arced steel with steel tube or with angle steel.

v. For vertical grounding, make sure there is good connection of the
block with the soil.
vi. The horizontally laid grounding block should meet the following
requirements:
The grounding block must be straight, flat, and free of evident
curve.
The bottom of the groove must be smooth and flat, free of stones
or other substances that may affect the contact between the
grounding block and the soil.
Lay the grounding block along the contour line in a sloping ground.
vii. Connect the grounding down lead to grounding block for easy
connection to measure the grounding resistance.
viii. The grounding down lead must be against the pole. The
reinforcement with the pole body must be for certain distance.
ix. Soil for back filling must be free of stones or other unwanted
substances. An earth-settling layer with a height of 100 mm to 300
mm must be set on the surface of the ditch after back filling.
x. Grounding resistance: No more than 5 Ohm for BS21
4. Seal both ends of the hollow reinforced concrete pole tightly to prevent
water from getting inside and causing damages.
Beam Installation
Install beams per specifications. Transfer the weight of the equipment and
service platform (including persons on it) to the two concrete poles
through the beams. The beam is made of 100 mm 100 mm 6 mm
equilateral hot-rolled angle iron.
Installation procedures:
1. Install the first set of beams on the concrete poles 2.8 m high above
the ground, and tighten it with long bolt assemblies (or dual-headed
bolts), as shown in Figure 8.
2. Install the second set of beams on the concrete poles 2.0 m above the
first set, and tighten it. This set of beams is for laddering purpose in
the installation of antenna.

Installation of Service Platform
The requirement of service plat form to be above 2 m
2
because of the
height of the installed BS21 is at a 2.8 m ~ 4.8 m to facilitate installation,
debugging, or repair. The service platform is according to Figure B-3
(service platform), Figure B-4 (guardrail), and Figure B-5 (knighthead).
Separate and assemble the platform and guardrails at the engineering site
for easy handling and installation.
Installation procedures:
1. Install the platform on the beam 2.8 m above the ground and tighten it
to the beam with bolts.
2. Install the front and back guardrails to the platform with bolts.
3. Use four supporting poles to connect the guardrails and platform to the
cement pole with the anchor ear. Pass part of operation platform to the
cement pole to guarantee the bearing capacity of the operating
platform and guardrails, as shown in Figure 9.
4. Installation of anchor ears for climbing steps on the cement pole (most
frequently the left one) about 1 m above the ground is essential for
easy installation and maintenance. There are four sets of anchor ears
at intervals of 0.5 m. One may install simple iron ladder if conditions
permit, but its bottom must be at least 1.5 m above the ground to
prevent unauthorized climbing.
Figure 9 shows the installation of service platform.

Equipment Installation
Outline dimensions of the ZXG10 BS21 rack are 650 mm 750 mm
1380 mm (L D H) with front and rear doors, and it weighs about 155
kg at full configuration. Align depth direction of the rack with the longitude
direction of the service platform (that is, the front door of the rack faces
the concrete pole at the left) to ensure the stability and safety of the
service platform, for the depth of the rack is up to 750 mm (100 mm more
than the width).
BS21 works in downward cabling mode, so installation of two additional
channel bars to reserve enough operating space between the equipment
and service platform is essential. The size of channel bar is 140 mm 58
mm 6 mm or 160 mm 63 mm 6.5 mm - GB707 hot-rolled channel
bars. Install two channels bars in the vertical direction to the beam below
the service platform, connect and fix on corresponding installation holes of
the beam through long bolt assemblies. The installation holes on the two
channel bars for the equipment must be spaced 580 mm. Figure 10 shows
the anchor installation holes of BS21.
Place BS21 in the center of the two channel bars. Fix the four anchor
installation holes on the rack base with the corresponding installation holes
on the two channel bars and ensure reliable installations of the equipment.

Ground Installation
The ground installation mode features low cost and convenient installation.
The ground installation falls into installations on hillside (two or three
BS21s), under iron tower, on roof, and in equipment room. Installations
on hillside or under iron tower require simple bounding walls or cabana to
ensure the safety of the BS and normal operation of the telecom
equipment.
1. Outdoor ground installation
Construct a concrete platform at the place for BS21, with dimensions
(for the installation of a single equipment) of 650 mm 750 mm
(200 ~ 500) mm. The construction of concrete platform on the roof of
the equipment room can be 200 mm ~ 300 mm high. Never install
expansion bolts directly on the roof. Fix two channel bars on the
concrete platform with expansion bolts first, as shown in Figure 11.
Place BS21 in the center of the two channel bars. Fix the four anchor
installation holes on the rack base with corresponding installation holes
on the two channel bars and ensure reliable installations of the
equipment. See Figure 11.
Note: The bearing capacity of a single concrete platform must be over 200 kg.
Install and fix multiple racks on one pair of channel bars with 500 mm
distance between the platforms to reserve enough ventilation space for
the heat exchanger external fan.

2. Indoor ground installation
Only outdoor installations of the ZXG10 BS21 requires concrete
platform. Fix two channel bars on the indoor ground with expansion
bolts first, as shown in Figure 11. Place BS21 in the center of the two
channel bars. Fix the four anchor installation holes on the rack base
with the corresponding installation holes on the two channel bars.
Iron Tower Installation
The installation on iron tower requires a platform above 2 m
2
with bearing
capacity above 400 Kg. Refer to dual-pole installation (Section Equipment
Installation) for cabinet installation.
Hoisting
The hoisting of BS21 must be onto the installations level (service platform
on iron tower, building roof, etc.) in compliant with standard hoisting
specifications on site.
Hoisting Preparations
1. Tools
i. 20 m-long twine (the length may be different depending on the
actual requirements) with diameter above 30 mm
ii. A metal hook or open slinger (above 300 kg)
iii. Several slip-proof gloves
iv. A bearing pulley (above 300 kg)
v. Several tapes or metal clips
2. Personnel: At least four constructors with rich telecom construction
experiences

Hoisting Procedures
Refer to following steps:
1. Plan the hoisting path first (a place above the equipment installation
platform is preferable). Select a secure point to fix the bearing pulley.
For example, an extension arm on the iron tower or a triangle support
on a parapet on the building roof is proper.
2. Insert the twine through the four rope holes on the equipment base
after unpacking the equipment. Add sponge, foam, carpet, or similar
cushion at the contact surface between the twine and equipment.
Ensure the equipment is stable and install the slinger as shown in
Figure 12.
3. Connect the chain (or twine) between the slinger and bearing pulley
and fix the connection with tape or metal clip to avoid the slinger loss
during hoisting.
4. Hoist the equipment and keep unrelated people away under the
hoisted equipment. Keep the hoisting at a stable speed and make sure
no collision occurs between the equipment and the building or iron
tower.
5. After the placement of the equipment on the installation platform,
gently remove the hook or slinger and then begin the equipment
installation.

Perform following checks on the installation of the cabinet:
1. Measure the racks and modules for their neatness.
2. Check the captive screws of the modules. Make sure of properly
fastened screws during the installation.
Lock the door after the cabinet installation. Only qualified personnel can
perform all operations or must be present to give their instructions.

Brief Introduction to Power
Cables and Grounding Cables
The power supply part of the ZXG10 BS21 includes PSM (AC) or DPS (DC),
and external 220 V AC input or -48 V DC input, which form a complete set
of power supply system for BS21.
External 220 V AC
The power cable comes from main line and goes to the 220 V AC
power supply for ZXG10 BS21 with anti-lightning filter, and then
distributes power to PSM and heat exchanger. PSM will perform AC/DC
conversion, and then distribute power to CMM, ETRM, TMM, and heat
exchanger. These modules, after various levels of DC/DC conversion
supply power to the boards. At the same time, the ETRM also
distributes +12 V output to AEM and provides overload disconnection
protection for each module.
External -48 V DC
The power cable comes from main line and goes to the -48 V DC power
supply for ZXG10 BS21 and distributes power to DPS to complete
filtering and surge protection, and the heat exchanger does not work
at the moment. Then DPS distributes power to CMM, ETRM, TMM, and
heat exchanger.

The power supply and grounding cables are all led from the bottom of
BS21, as shown in Figure 34. See Table 20 for the description of interfaces
on the cabinet bottom.
Installation of Power Cables
There are two types of power modules: AC power module and DC power
module. Use different power supply plug-in box according to the
configuration.
AC Power Cables
The power supply plug-in box used for AC power supply is shown in Figure
13.

The cross-sectional area of the power cable must be no less than 2.5 mm
2
for external 220 V AC power supply. Connect the basic power from the L,
GND, and N ends of the 3-core aeronautical socket on the cabinet bottom
into the cabinet of the ZXG10 BS21 according to the polarity and
grounding marks of the basic power, as shown in position 17 in Figure 34.
Note: Power cable colors: phase line (L) red, zero line ground (N) blue,
protection ground (PE) yellow/green
This equipment operates at 220 V AC, which makes the equipment
potentially dangerous. Only a person with proper safety can enter a high-
voltage.
Do follow the local safety regulations when installing any AC power
equipment.
Anyone that installs AC equipment must be qualified for high-voltage and
AC operations.
Do shut off power supply before connecting or disconnecting a power cable.
Make sure the cable and its label meet actual installation requirements
before the installation.

DC Power Cables
The power supply plug-in box used for DC power supply is shown in Figure
14.

The external -48 V DC power cable adopts 4-core power cable, of which
the insulation layer colors are: blue, red, black, and yellow/green. The
nominal cross-sectional area of is 1.5 mm
2
and the maximum diameter is
10 mm, as shown in Figure 15.

According to power polarities, connect the power supply with ZXG10 BS21
cabinet through the 4-core aeronautical socket on the cabinet bottom
plate, as shown in Figure 34 (the interface with the serial number 21).
Equipment Grounding
The connectors marked as PE (protection ground of the case) and LPE
(lightning protection ground) on the rack bottom of the ZXG10 BS21 must
be grounded properly. The grounding connection is in good condition and
the grounding resistance complies with technical requirements, less than 5
Ohm. Refer to positions 16 (PE) and 18 (LPE) in Figure 34 using 35 mm
2
grounding wire for rack grounding connections.

1. Protection ground of the equipment
i. Install the protection grounding cable for the master equipment of
the BTS. Connect the protection grounding cable of BS21 BTS to
the protective grounding bar. Use plastic insulated copper-core wire
with a cross section area no less than 35 mm
2
s for this purpose.
ii. The protection grounding cables of the equipment must be copper
conductors instead of aluminum conductors. The grounding
terminal must undergo anti-corrosion and anti-rust treatment. Also,
connect the grounding terminal securely.
iii. Protection grounding bar: The protection-grounding bar should
have an independent grounding cable. Connect the grounding cable
directly to the ground grid. It is preferable to adopt 4 mm 40 mm
of galvanized flat steel for the grounding down lead.
Note: Ground the equipment or facilities properly (e.g., lightning arrester for
antenna feeder, lightning protection facility for transmission equipment). Connect
the ground leads for the transmission equipment and antenna feeder directly with
the ground grid via the busbar.
2. Grounding for the BTS installed on poles
i. The protection ground of the BTS must share the same grounding
network with the lightning arrester.
ii. The connecting point between the BTS grounding cable and the
grounding network must be within 3 m away from that between the
anti-lightning arrestor cable and the grounding network (sharing
the same network cable).
iii. The cables of the BTS system must be separate than the lightning
arrester or the lightning arrester cables. Lay them far away from
lightning arrester or the lightning arrester cables.
3. Grounding requirements of the antenna feeder system
Install lightning arrester with the BTS core module if the BTS uses the
outdoor antenna.
Pay attention to following points during the installation:
i. Install the lightning arrester higher than the antenna and the
antenna lies within 45 protection range of it.
ii. Ground the lightning arrestor to the ground network directly
through flat steel.
iii. Ground the antenna feeder, power supply, and transmission to the
busbar.
iv. Ground the equipment to the ground network through the
protection ground bar.
4. All external cables for connections and grounding of the lightning
arrest must have lightning protection before entering ZXG10 BS21.

i. Always ground the antenna feeder lightning arrester of the BTS.
The cable must be made of plastic insulated copper-core wire with
cross-section area no less than 35 mm
2

ii. The transmission equipment of the BTS must have lightning
protection devices installed.
iii. The ZXG10 BS21 must have lightning protection devices installed to
lead 220 V power supply and antenna feeders.
5. Other grounding
i. Take proper lightning-proof measures before leading the power and
transmission lines into the equipment room.
ii. Ground the indoor system for indoor BS21 installation to the
grounding bar and connect all equipment grounds to the grounding
bar. Connect the grounding bar to general grounding bar of the
building.
Laying of Power Cables and
Grounding Cables
Follow the principles below to lay power and grounding cables:
1. Laying power and grounding cable
i. They must be separate from other cables. Bind them separately
instead of binding them as a bundle in the rack, also applying it
outside the rack.
ii. Select the cable tie model (150 mm/300 mm) according to the
cable quantity, and cut the cable tie even after binding.
iii. Measure the exact distance between the power distribution cabinet
and wiring terminal of the cabinet during the cable distribution.
Always reserve enough length for future insufficiency in practice.
Replace the cable whose length is not long enough with a longer
one and re-lay the cable. Avoid connecting or welding the cable
with one another, as shown in Figure 16.

2. Engineering label of the power cable
The engineering labels of the power cables employ special engineering
labels made by ZTE Corporation, and are attached 2 cm away from the
lugs. Label one end of the cable with the position of the power
distribution cabinet, and the other end with the position of the cabinet.

On-site cable connection is usually unnecessary, for they are ready before
delivery. Make corresponding modifications with reference to contents in
this section if the personnel change the site configuration during on-site
installation.
Introduction to Backboard
Interfaces
Only the carrier shelf has backplanes in the cabinet.
The backboard transmission module (BTM) consists of an MMTRM, to
transmit information among CMM, ETRM, and AEM. It also provides
interfaces to input and output external signals.
Figure 17 shows the layout of MMTRM.

ALM_OUT, and one RS-232 interface.
X21 and X27: 2 mm high-density type-A 5 22 pin sockets with guide
slots for the AEM.
X20 and X26: 3-pin primary power sockets of the AEM.

X23 and X25: 2 mm high-density type-A 5 22 pin sockets with guide
slots for the ETRM.
X22 and X24: Three-core primary power supply socket of the ETRM,
coming from X1.
X5: D-type 9-core straight PCB welded connector, supplying power from
the ETRM to the tower amplifier.
S1 and S2: They are the settings for the cabinet ID. Refer to Settings of
Basic and Extension Cabinets.
Rack Backplane Wiring
Backplane wiring is the same for all BS21 basic and extended racks
regardless of their configurations, including power cables from the PSM to
the TMM, from the PSM to the carrier shelf, signal cables from the carrier
shelf to transmission equipment, and cable connections from the carrier
shelf to output interfaces on the cabinet bottom. The delivery of BS21 is
always after wiring the backplane.
Figure 18 and Table 9 describe the backplane wiring and connections at
the cabinet back when AC power supply is configured.

When DC power supply is configured, perform the backplane wiring
according to the AC power wiring mentioned above. Power cables should
be connected with the filter from cabinet bottom first, and then connected
with the DC power supply plug-in box.
Rack Front Panel Wiring
Front panel wiring of the ZXG10 BS21 refers to the connection of RF cables,
including ETRM and AEM panel wiring. The AEM module includes CDU, CEU,
and ECDU. The factory configures the front panel wiring before delivery.
The below are the descriptions of several module panels and RF cabling
with typical configurations.

Cabinets
MMTRM backplane in BS21 (V2.2) cabinet uses two DIP switches, S1 and
S2, for settings of cabinet ID.
DIP switch S1 and S2 are on the front of backplane, on which boards are
inserted. Before setting DIP, pull out CMM board and dummy board first.
CMM reads the ID to determine the cabinet level (basic/extension), SDH
network synchronization clock port, and O&M timeslot position upon
power-on and initialization.
ID read by CMM is 0 when DIP switch is set to ON; otherwise, it is 1.
ID is a 16-bit serial number, as shown in Figure 27.

Basic rack E1 port connecting the lower-level station cannot be equal to
the value of SLAVE_PORT1 or SLAVE_PORT2 when there is a lower-level
station. For example, the basic rack D interface connects a lower-level

The transmission equipments for BS21 are T150, AS3, E1, and others of
the ZX-SM150 (V2) (shorted as SM150 (V2)), as shown in Figure 28.

SM150 (V2) compact synchronous digital multiplexing equipment is
compact SDH transmission equipment at STM-1 level with highly
integrated modular design, compact structure, and compliant with SDH
mapping path standards of North American and Europe.

Install SM150 (V2) in BS21 according to following steps:
1. Remove the upper cover of SM150 (V2) shown in Figure 29.
3. Remove the lower cover at the bottom of the chassis together with the
fans on it. Keep them safely.
2. Loosen the nuts at corresponding locations on BS21 rack. Adjust their
locations until the four holes align with BS21 rack and the SM150 (V2)
transmission front panel, as shown in Figure 28.
3. Insert the SM150 (V2) transmission into BS21 and tighten the screws.

Splice optical fibers of the user with the pigtail in the fiber disk and
connect pigtails to the optical board (OBI) on SM150 (V2) through the
front panel. Note that the receiving pigtail corresponds to the receiving
end of the OBI R interface, and transmitting pigtail corresponds to the
transmitting end of the OBI T interface, as shown in Figure 30.

Every optical interface on the panel of OIB1 has an indicator that can
change colors to indicate the status. There are two indictors on the panel
of OIB1D: "RUN1 ALM1" and "RUN2 ALM2" from the top down,
corresponding to the line working status of optical interfaces 1 and 2
respectively. Green indicator flashes once a second to indicate normal
operation of the board. Red indicator flashes once a second to indicate
alarms of the board.
Figure 31 shows the backplane of SM150 (V2). T1 interface (transmitting
end) of ETB corresponds to the receiving end of 2M line of BS21, and R1
interface (receiving end) of ETB corresponds to the transmitting end of 2M
line of BS21, as shown in Figure 32.

two line pairs out of the three E1 line pairs from Abis interface are for PCM
link sharing function within several BTSs, i.e., cascading of several BTSs in

The man-machine interface (MMI) is a serial communication interface
between BTS and local O&M terminal. The local operation & maintenance
interfaces include RS232 interfaces and Ethernet interfaces in the two
communications of LMT, i.e., serial interface communication and network

Use dedicated RS232 serial port line during serial port communication to
connect LMT interface to RS232 serial port of LMT (PC).

Installation of Antenna Feeder
System

Waterproof Treatment for Connectors
Antenna feeder system of the base station includes I/O ports from BTS
cabinet to BTS antenna. It mainly transmits and receives signals of the
BTS. The system configuration with a tower top amplifier will require
power lines for the tower top amplifier.
Configuration of BTS antenna system relates closely to network planning.
Different coverage areas and environments needs different antenna feeder
systems. Network planning has predetermined layout, elevation, dip, gain,
and even diversity reception mode of the antenna before the installation.
Proper installation of antennas is essential to communication performance
of coverage areas and to reliable operation of mobile BTS system. Install
antennas in correct direction, including correct dip and azimuth of the
antenna in each sector. Besides, antennas must be resistant to wind (i.e.
capability to withstand wind at the speed of 150 km/h).
The below is sequence for antenna and feeder installation:

Preparation for Antenna Feeder
System Installation
Engineering preparation is prior to the installation and it includes
infrastructure construction, inspection of incoming materials, and
preparation of cable connectors
Antenna installation parameters in networking planning, including
directions of the antennas and specific distances between antennas in the
same and different sectors, is essential.
Infrastructure Construction
The grounding for the antenna, feeder, iron tower of BTS, and the
equipment is extremely important. The work ground of BTS forms a
combined grounding system with a grounding resistance less than 5 Ohm.
It is all right to install the antenna of the mobile system on the rooftop
with or without fence, on an iron tower or pole. Make preparations, fix the
supports and poles, and inspect the iron tower, poles, and cabling rack
before installing antennas.
Iron Tower
Check following items to ensure the safety of BTS:
1. Whether height, strength, and other indices of iron tower comply with
the contract terms.
2. Whether copper grounding bars around the iron tower are ready and
their grounding resistance complies with the contract terms.
3. Whether the platform of the iron tower is ready and meets the
requirements.
Antenna Pole
The pole is generally made of galvanized steel. Its outer diameter ranges
48 ~ 100 mm and the thickness of the pipe wall is no less than 2 mm and
its reference length is 3 m. Actual size of the pole depend on requirements
in the antenna description, for the antennas are of different types.
Check the following to ensure the safety of BTS:
1. Install antennas on poles spaced according to engineering design
requirements. Horizontal diversity distance for 900 MHz generally

ranges from 4 m to 6 m while that for 1800 MHz ranges from 2 m to 3
m, for two receiving antennas in the same sector. Follow the design
documents for otherwise specified designs.
2. Poles on the iron tower are mounted on the enclosure of flat roof, one
meter away from the tower body.
3. Install poles used for fixing BTS antennas and are perpendicular to the
horizontal plane (error less than 1 degree).
4. Mount the poles close to the rooftop brink as much as possible. When
securing the poles directly on the side of the wall, make sure that the
wall is strong enough.
5. When securing the poles directly on the rooftop, construct cement
frusta to avoid drilling holes on the rooftop, which may cause the
rooftop leaking.
Cabling Racks
Check the following to ensure the safety of BTS:
1. The cabling racks in the equipment room are all 400 mm-wide
standard models, and are usually installed above the equipment rack
about 2,600 mm above the floor. Make sure that the whole equipment
does not shake after installation of the cabling racks.
2. The remaining length of the expansion bolts used for reinforcing must
be the same, that is, reserve a length of about 5 mm or more than two
threads when tightening the screw.
3. Paint the cabling rack with the same color.
4. Ground indoor cabling racks every 5 m. Measure electrically for proper
grounding after installation.
Checking Incoming Materials
Conduct inspection and performance test on the jumpers, tower top
amplifier (optional), lightning arresters, and antennas before their
distribution to the site.
Transport some materials directly to the site during installation of the
antenna system of the BTS. Unpacking and inspection of these materials is
also an important part of system installation. Such materials are main
feeder cable, including installation accessories.
On-site inspection includes following items:
1. Check whether the packing is intact.
2. Carefully unpack to check the number of goods and accessories against
the packing list.
3. Check the goods appearance for any damage.
4. Check the quantity (e.g. length) of the materials against the packing
list for consistency.
5. Store the materials before installation.

Preparing Connectors
All the cables use special connectors in the antenna feeder system.
Engineering personnel usually make jumper connectors before delivery
and it is only necessary to make the connectors for feeders on the site.
Take the 7/8" feeder connector as an example. Procedures to make the
connector:
1. Pull straight a section (about 150 mm) of the connector at one end,
use a knife to strip off the sheath of the feeder cable 50 mm away
from the end, as shown in Figure 36.

Caution: Be careful when using the knife.
2. Strip the sheath of the feeder cable. Put the feeder cable end into the
notch of the cutter, and make the notch as close to the sheath of the
feeder cable as possible. Close the cutter gently and press it slightly.
Turn the cutter clockwise, viewed from the feeder cable end, until the
blade at the front cuts the internal and external conductors completely.
Turn the cutter slightly two revolutions to make sure that the blade at
the back cuts the sheath.
3. Put an O-shaped ring around the sheath of the feeder cable and apply
lubricating oil at the first wave trough of the external conductor. Make
the internally threaded end face outward and put the connector
fastener around the feeder cable. Finally, push it in until it exposes a
wave trough of the external conductor of the feeder cable, as shown in
Figure 37.

4. Put the spring gasket into the wave trough of the external conductor of
the feeder cable.
5. Press the foamed materials inside the feeder cable connector towards
the internal conductor from the external conductor.
6. Guide one end of the plug-in component into the internal conductor of
the feeder cable carefully and then load the plug-in component, as
shown in Figure 38.

7. Turn the connector onto the fixing component. Turn the fixing
component with a spanner without moving the connector. Brush the
copper filings off the foamed material, especially the cross section of
the foamed material, as shown in Figure 39.

8. Remove the connector and check the profile of the external conductor,
which must be even without any foam or copper filings. Unscrew the
plug-in component by 1/4 turns, and turn the connector fixing
component while keeping the connector fixed, as shown in Figure 40.

Structure of Antenna Feeder
System
Install up to three directional antennas or one omni-directional antenna on
the top of the concrete pole.
Both transmission and reception can share one of the two directional
antennas in a sector. Connect the duplexer and the combiner via the
feeder cable. It transmits downlink signals from the BTS to the mobile
station (MS) and receives uplink signals from the MS. The receiving of the
uplink signals from the MS use the other antenna and connects directly to
the pre-receiving filter via the feeder cable.
Each set of BTS antennas connects to the bottom rack via one feeder cable.
Every feeder cable includes the following sections from the antenna to the
antenna interface (specific feeder dimensions depend on site conditions)
without tower amplifier configuration:
1. It consists of 1/2" super-flexible jumper from the antenna to the main
feeder using a male DIN connector.
2. The main feeder is 7/8-inch feeder cable (including connectors on both
ends). Generally DIN connecters, connecting the jumper of the main

feeder at one end, and the jumper from the main feeder to the super-
flexible jumper at the other end.
3. There is a lightning arrester between the main feeder and the super-
flexible jumper. It uses DIN connector for connection, with male end
connecting the main feeder cable and female end connecting the
jumper.
4. It is 1/2" super-flexible jumper from the main feeder to the MB, and it
uses male DIN connector for connection.
5. There must be several grounding cards at the upper part and lower
part of the main feeder cable before entering the equipment room.
Space the grounding cards at 15 ~ 20 m with both ends grounded.
There is a jumper from the antenna to the tower amplifier and a jumper
from the tower amplifier to the main feeder cable, in tower amplifier
configuration.

The installation position and environment affects the installation of the
antenna feeder system of the base station. Detailed installation procedures
depend on installation environment.

Check the following to ensure the safety of BTS:
1. Ground the feeder cable properly at the platform on top of the tower
after the installation of the BS iron tower on the floor, where the
installed antenna is 0.5 m ~ 1 m above the bend. If the feeder cable is
longer than 60 m, ground it in the middle. It connects the metallic
outer layer to the grounding busbar via grounding clips. Lead out a
tinplated copper wire with cross section area no less than 95 mm
2
or
zinc-plated flat steel of the busbar to connect corresponding grounding
point of the iron tower.
2. Install antennas on poles spaced as per the engineering design
requirements. Horizontal diversity distance of the 900 MHz one for two
receiving antennas in the same sector generally ranges from 4 m to 6
m, while that of the 1,800 MHz one ranges from 2 m to 3 m. Follow the
design documents for otherwise specified designs.
3. Reinforce the main feeder cable in every 1.2 m, and add some more
reinforcement points at bends. The feeder must be closely against the
pole, and it requires the reinforcement with the pole body every certain
distance, as shown in Figure 45.

4. Ground the antenna and feeder properly. The work ground of the BTS
should form a combined grounding system with a grounding resistance
less than 5 Ohm. Ground the main feeder cable respectively where it
connects with the antenna and where it leaves the bend of the iron
tower.
The following contents detail the installation of the antenna feeder system
based on the installation flow.

Installation of BTS Antennas
The installation of antennas includes fixing the antennas, installing
antenna jumpers, feeder cables, cabinet-top jumpers, lightning arresters,
and grounding clips. Install the antenna with a lightning arrester if the BTS
is an outdoor installation, and sometimes there may be no need to install
lightning arresters.
Warning: Take care to prevent objects from falling while working at height.
Working at height should conform to the related national service
regulation requirements:
Train people specially working at height.
Take care of the operation machinery and tools to prevent them from
falling.
Take safety precautions, and wear helmet and safety belt.
Check all hoisting equipment before working at height.
Fixing Antennas
Installation procedures of directional antenna and omni antenna are
different. Pay attention to following aspects during both installations:
1. Only experienced professionals can install and maintain the antenna
system of the BTS.
2. Read this manual and follow the specified procedures before
installation.
3. Do not install antennas near any power line to ensure personal safety.
4. Do not use a metal ladder for installing antennas.
5. Wear safety belt and safety helmet for working at height.
6. Wear shoes with bossy rubber on the soles, wear rubber gloves, and
wear jackets and long-sleeve shirts.
7. Never conduct any installation or test in rain, wind, moisture, or
lightning weather.
8. Make sure that the BTS is off during installation.
9. Observe relevant precautions strictly during installation of every part.
It is necessary to use a rope to hoist the antennas to the right place
before installation, as shown in Figure 46.

Warning: Do not walk about right under the boom and hoisted weight.
Make sure of facilities with proper hoisting capability during disassembling,
moving, and replacing equipment.
The personnel must have related training and corresponding qualifications
for hoisting equipment. Check the hoisting tools to be complete. Make sure
of fixed hoisting tools to a fixture that can bear the weight or to the wall
for the hoisting. Use brief commands to prevent mistakes.
Directional Antenna
The installation of directional antenna is a little complicated. Follow
installation instructions of the antenna to install the antenna. General
installation procedures:
1. Install the antenna fixing supports in a folded way, as shown in Figure
47.

2. Adjust antennas to appropriate height. Use bolts and U-shaped bolts to
fix the antenna dip fixing supports onto the antenna pole to ensure
input/output ports of antennas face downwards, as shown in Figure 48.

3. Verify the normal direction of the antenna radiation surface is the same
as the antenna azimuth for network planning using compass. Turn the
antenna centered by antenna pole. Adjust the azimuth of the antenna
of adjacent sectors as required. Included angle between antennas of
different sectors is generally 120, while the directions of the two
antennas within the same sector must be the same.
Install the antennas on the iron tower platform. It is difficult for an
ordinary compass to define azimuth of the antenna accurately due to
the influence of iron tower on the magnetic field. Use special
instrument (e.g. Kathrein azimuth regulator as applied in the example
here, as shown in Figure 49) to adjust the azimuth to designed
degrees.

5. Adjust the dip of the antenna through dip fixing support of the antenna.
The dip of the antenna must be the same as the angle indicated on the
dip fixing support of the antenna with the error no more than 1
degree (use a vertical angle gauge to verify the pole is vertical).
The down tilt angle gauge is a rotary angle instrument with air bleeder,
as shown in Figure 52.

Omni-directional Antenna
It is simple to install omni antenna.
1. Adjust antennas to appropriate height, use bolts and U-shaped bolts to
fix the antenna onto the antenna pole to ensure that the input/output
ports of the antennas face downwards, as shown in Figure 54.

2. Make sure the antenna is vertical and measure it with a vertical angle
gauge.
3. Tighten the screws with a spanner.
Installing Antenna J umpers
The antenna jumper is a 1/2" super-flexible jumper to connect the
antenna and the main feeder cable in the BTS system. The use of jumper
connectors depends on the antenna and the main feeder cable. They are
usually male DIN connectors.
Installation procedures:
1. Select an appropriate path for the jumper, considering factors, such as,
reliability, convenience, short jumper, and best water flow (i.e. the
rainwater drops from the middle of the jumper and not from the
connectors).
2. Connect the connector of the antenna and jumper with an appropriate
torque (the connection torque of a DIN connector is typically 1.7 Nm
and maximally 2.3 Nm). Make sure that the connector of the antenna
and jumper does not bear any lateral force, as shown in Figure 55.

3. Connect the connector of the main feeder cable and jumper with an
appropriate torque (same as above). Make sure that the connector of
the main feeder cable and jumper does not bear any lateral force.
4. Fix the jumper with feeder cable clips with the maximum spacing of no
more than 0.76 m, as shown in Figure 56. Shorten the spacing
between the feeder cable clips when the wind speed is over 160 km/h.

5. Measure the performance of the antenna and the feeder cable, make
sure that the system works normally, and then seal connectors with
waterproof self-adhesive tape and PVC tape.
Precautions when installing 1/2" super-flexible jumper, to ensure reliability
of BTS antenna system.
1. Minimum bending radius of once-for-all bend is 125 mm, as shown in
Figure 57.

2. Minimum bending radius of repeated bends is 200 mm, as shown in
Figure 58.

3. Tighten the connectors and seal them with waterproof adhesive tape if
the test result of entire antenna feeder system is satisfactory.
Installing Feeder Cables
Connect the main feeder cable with two jumpers (one to the antenna and
the other to the cabinet) using 7/8" foamed feeder cable. Both connectors
are usually female DIN connectors.
Ensure following mechanical properties when transporting and installing
the main feeder cable:
1. Minimum bending radius of once-for-all bend is 400 mm.
2. Minimum bending radius of repeated bends is 450 mm.
3. Maximum feeder cable hoisting length of the hoisting trawl is 60 m.
Installation procedures:
1. The feeder cables delivered to the construction site are often very long
without prepared connectors, so it is necessary to measure the
required length of a single main feeder cable first during the
installation (reserve excessive length), and cut the feeder cables
delivered to the site into the lengths required.
2. Prepare the main feeder DIN connector at the antenna side.

3. Use pulley or hoisting trawl to lift the feeder cables to the iron tower,
as shown in Figure 59. Work with several other people to fix the main
feeder cables with feeder cable clips, and cut off remaining length of
each main feeder cable.

4. Proceed to main feeder DIN connector at the other side after installing
the main feeder cable.
5. Reinforce main feeder cable every 1.2 m, and add some more
reinforcement points at the bends. The feeder must be closely against
the pole, reinforce with the pole body every certain distance, as shown
in Figure 60.

6. Install BS iron tower on the floor. Ground the feeder cable properly 0.5
m ~ 1 m above the bend where it connects the antenna and leaves the
tower body, and at the outside of the entrance to the equipment room.
Ground it in the middle if the feeder cable is longer than 60 m. Connect
its metallic outer layer to the grounding busbar via grounding clips,
and lead out a tinplated copper wire with cross section area no less
than 95 mm
2
or zinc-plated flat steel of the busbar to connect to
corresponding grounding point of the iron tower.
Precautions:
1. Keep the feeder cable (at least 150 mm) straight.
2. Use special-purpose tools for cutting feeder cables.
3. Measure the length precisely with an accurate ruler.
4. Use a knife to strip the sheath of the feeder cable without scratching
the external conductor.
5. Keep the plug-in components motionless when tightening the
connector with a spanner. Turn the connector-fixing component to
fasten the connector firmly.
6. Attach identifiers to both ends of the main feeder cable before placing
it onto the iron tower to distinguish sectors it belongs to and the
transmitting/receiving features during line connection. Attach the
identifiers closely to avoid peeling due to friction with the steel frame
of the iron tower.
Installing Feeder Window
Install the feeder window before introducing the feeder cable in the
equipment room after installing BTS in the equipment room.
Installation procedures:

Installing Lightning Arrester
Connect grounded lightning arresters in serial properly on all cables
leading from the antenna of the BTS into the equipment room. Lightning
arresters of different models from different manufacturers may differ. The
following description takes typical /4 stub as an example.
Installation procedures:
1. Install the lightning arrester between 7/8" main feeder cable and 1/2"
cabinet-top jumper after entering the equipment room. The lightning
arrester has one male DIN connector and one female DIN connector.
Maximum installation torque of the lightning arrester with DIN
connector is 25 Nm, and that with N connector is 1.7 Nm. Please use
an adjustable torque spanner to adjust the torque to specified value to
prevent excessive torque from generating lateral force and damaging
the lightning arrester.
2. The lightning arrester has one RF port connecting 7/8" main feeder
cable and the other with 1/2" cabinet-top jumper. One may connect
both RF ports with the antenna or BTS, and the lightning arrester
provides the same protection against lightning, as shown in Figure 64.

3. Connect grounding post of the lightning arrester to main grounding
post or the system-grounding ring with small grounding resistance.
4. Do not seal connectors before performance test of feeder cable finishes.
Seal the connectors with self-adhesive tape if test result is satisfactory,
as shown in Figure 65.

Precautions:
1. Do not expose RF ports outdoors.
2. Make sure that all the grounding contact surfaces are clean, dry, and
not oxidized during the installation.
3. Make sure to connect the grounding port of the lightning arrester with
the main grounding rod or grounding ring of the system to secure
small grounding resistance.
4. Install the lightning arrester properly and neatly.
5. Make sure that the operating frequency marked on the lightning
arrester is compliant with operating frequency of BTS system.

Installing Grounding Clip
The grounding clip serves to connect external conductor of the feeder
cable with the tower or independent grounding wire to channel the current
into the ground in case of lightning stroke. One must install the grounding
clips at the top of the feeder cable near the antenna, at the end of the
feeder cable near the tower bottom, and before the feeder cable enters
the equipment room. Connect a grounding clip to the middle of a feeder
cable longer than 60 m.
Installation procedures:
1. Fix the grounding end of the grounding clip. Mark the corresponding
position on the 7/8" feeder cable at the installation position of
grounding clip, and strip the sheath of the 7/8" feeder cable at the
installation position to install the grounding clip.
2. Put the retaining ring of the grounding clip around external conductor
of the feeder cable and snap the ring, as shown in Figure 66.

3. Use waterproof self-adhesive tape to wind around entire connection
place. Each layer overlaps half of last layer is as shown in Figure 67.
The winding direction must be the same as bail direction to make the
connection tighter. Press adhesive tape along the edge of grounding
clip to make the tape fit in closely with retaining ring of the grounding
clip.

4. Use electrically insulated tape to wind around entire connection place.
Wind in semi-overlapping mode to leave a length of 25 mm for each
layer over its previous layer, as shown in Figure 68. Overlap the
electrically insulated adhesive taps by half. Pull the tape to a proper
length to avoid folding. Wind backward when it comes to the end of
connection place. Press the tape with both hands to make sure that
layers are in good contact.

5. Connect grounding end of the grounding clip to the tower body or
special-purpose wiring post. Remove the paint and oxide about 13 mm
around the connection place. Apply antioxidant grease to the clean
area to ensure proper electrical contact.
Warning: Do not install grounding clip in case of lightning strike to avoid personal
injury.
Notes: Make sure to ground the external conductor of the feeder cable properly at
the position of the grounding clip.
Make sure to seal the external corrugated conductor of the feeder cable completely
(waterproof, airtight, and antioxidant) after installing the grounding clip.
Installing Cabinet J umper
Connect the cabinet and the main feeder cable by a 1/2" super-flexible
feeder cable. The use of jumper depends on the cabinet and the main
feeder cable. Both connectors are usually male DIN connectors.
Installation procedures:
1. Unfasten the four installation bolts to fix the antenna feeder socket
(one among HYCOM1 ~ HYCOM6) on the cabinet top, and screw off the
socket.
2. Unfasten the N connector on AEM, loosen RF cables on AEM panels and
adjacent ETRM, and unfasten spring screws to remove AEM and
adjacent ETRM.
3. Put the jumper down from the cabinet top to corresponding carrier
frame. Grab the jumper at the hole on the side panel of the frame, and
thread it out from the hole on front post of the cabinet.
4. Take the N connector out from the baffle plate. Adjust the direction of
the N connector so that its cross section faces inward and points to the
module panel. Tighten the four screws on the cabinet top to secure the
antenna feeder cable.
5. Plug AEM and ETRM again, connect RF cables on the panels, and

Check and Test of Antenna
Feeder System
Perform the antenna feeder test to match the feeder cable, that is, to
verify correct installation and proper function of the antenna feeder
system. This test mainly involves the indices of the receiver and the
transmitter. Main test items are Standing Wave Ratio (SWR) and RF
transmitting power.
Preparations
Requirements before testing the antenna feeder system:
1. Install antenna and feeder cables and disconnect interfaces connecting
the antennas.
2. Check for any damage to the feeder cable, proper connection, and
correct direction of the antenna.
3. Arrange the test process to avoid repeated connection and
disconnection of connectors and sealed parts. Do not seal connectors
with adhesive tapes before the test is complete.
Peoples safety might be in danger to stay close to the antenna because it
may generate electromagnetic radiation. Only qualified professionals with
adequate training may install and service the equipment. The radiation
design of the equipment must comply with IEEE C95.1-1991 standard.
Warning: The high intensity microwave may affect body health when operating on
high-intensity RF equipment.
Collaborate to shut the transmitter of the antenna down when doing close
installation and maintenance operations on a certain antenna in an iron
tower or mast mounted with many transmitter antennas.
Warning: Keep adequate distance from the antenna when conducting installation
and servicing operations around the operating antenna.
Avoid unplugging the connector of the transmitter output feeder or of the
antenna feeder cable during transmission.
Power off the relevant transmitter before unplugging the feeder cable
connector or working beside the transmitter antenna.
VSWR Test
VSWR test refers to the test of VSWR (Voltage Standing Wave Ratio) of TX
antenna. The BTS tester SITE MASTER 332B is better for the test. VSWR
must be less than 1.5. Check the antenna feeder system if VSWR test
result is not OK:

1. Check the connection of connectors.
2. Check for any scratches or damages to the surface of the feeder cable,
and bending radius of the feeder cable to be smaller than permitted
minimum value.
Fill in Installation Acceptance Report and BTS Information Table after the
test finishes, and the user signs it for acknowledgement.
The system gives an alarm if VSWR exceeds 1.5 after BTS system
installation. There are two alarm thresholds in the system. The system
generates an alarm when it overruns primary alarm threshold, and BTS
keeps operating. The transmitter shuts down automatically when it
overruns the secondary alarm threshold.
RF Transmitting Power Test
RF transmitting power refers to average RF carrier power, and it
determines the power at input end of the combiner and verifies accuracy
of average transmitting RF carrier power.
Use on-site test instruments and BTS tester MASTER 332B is better.
Conduct the test at the input end of the combiner, like output end of the
power amplification module.
BS21 must be able to output maximum peak power of the power levels, as
shown in Table 36 (RF900) and Table 37 (RF1800) and accordingly turn
down 6 static power levels at a step of 20.5 dB.

Waterproof Treatment for
Connectors
Seal the connectors after the completion of the system test for antenna
feeder and the results are OK. Use two types of adhesive tapes for sealing:
waterproof self-adhesive insulated tape and electrically insulated adhesive
tape. Wrap the connectors with electrically insulated adhesive tapes, then
with the waterproof adhesive tapes, and finally with electrically insulated
tapes again.
The electrically insulated adhesive tapes must be fire-retardant, coldness
resistant and corrosion-proof, and must be able to operate under voltage
of 600 V. Its operating temperature must not be greater than 80C.
Following describes usage of electrically insulated adhesive tapes:
1. Polish the surface area and clean it.
2. Remove the lining paper of the adhesive tape, to make the glued side
face the surface to be covered.
3. Wind the tape continuously in a half-overlap way, to keep the tape
fully stretched.

Installation
In this chapter, you will learn about:

Check to prepare for subsequent software installation and system
debugging after all hardware installations finish.
Check items: cabinet, cable distribution, connectors, sockets, labels, and
environment.
Check the cabinets mainly in following aspects:
1. Cabinets must be stable and neat after installation and connection of
cabinets finish. A row of cabinets must be in a straight line, and a
column of cabinets must be in the same plane with an error less than 5
mm. The cabinets must be vertical and the distance must be less than
3 mm.
2. Tighten all fasteners.
3. Make sure to avoid the falling and damages of various spare parts on
the cabinets, and verify for lines connection. All denoters must be
correct, complete, and clear.
4. Make sure cabinets are clean all through after the installation.
5. Push covers of wire outlets at upper and lower cable outlets of the cabinet
forward after laying out all cables, to prevent rodents entering the cabinet.

Warning: Do not touch the surface area of some devices to avoid a scald injury
due to high temperature.
Cables
1. Power cables
Connect all power cables reliably with correct polarity.
2. Intra- and inter-cabinet cables
Check whether connections of clock cables, power alarm cables, and
testing cables are correct and reliable. Make sure the routing and
binding spacing is correct, and that cable ties have no sharp ends and
overlapping.
3. External cables
i. Various cables must be loose rather than tense at the bending
position.
ii. The cabling must be smooth without crossing inside the rack, and
bind the cables outside the rack into bundles per cabinet.
iii. Arrange cables in the cabling trough and the cabling ladder neatly,
and bind all cables into bundles without damaging external skins.
iv. Reserve the margin for the cables at various positions. Cut the
cable ties flat without exposure of any sharp end.
Sockets, Plugs, and Locking
Plates
Fasten the plugs and locking plates of all cables. There must not be any
missing or bent pin(s) for the sockets or plugs.
Labels
All labels must be neat, clean, and attached correctly.
On-site Environment
1. Cabinets
There must be no redundant cable ties, stubs, or other sundries inside
the cabinet. The front/rear/side doors of the cabinet must be clean.
2. Cabling troughs

Avoid leaving sundries such as cable ties, stubs, and desiccant bags in
the cabling trough at the bottom of the cabinet, and under the raised
floor around the cabinet. All cabling must be in order.
3. Clear all the redundant and unused materials in the equipment room.
Arrange necessary materials in the equipment room in order. Keep
workstations clean and tidy. Keep raised floor flat and clean.
Antenna Feeder System
Make sure that antenna feeder cables, jumpers, and connectors are in
good contact, that lightning arresters are installed correctly and reliably,
and that fastening screws are tight enough and are all waterproof.

Power-on/off
In this chapter, you will learn about:

Unplugging/Plugging Modules
Installation and maintenance personnel must avoid hot plugging of
modules in BS21 system to avoid unnecessary human damage to the
modules.
Notes: Do not plug a module with great force to avoid bending the pins on the
backplane.
Plug the module right into the slot and avoid contact between the module and the
circuit face.
Do not touch the module circuits, components, connectors, and wiring slots when
holding a module.
Wear antistatic wrist strap for necessary hot plugging.
Notes: Static electricity produced by human body may damage static-sensitive
components on the circuit board, such as large-scale integrated circuits (LSI).
Accumulated electrostatic charges (ESC) derive from friction created by
human body movements. Human body can carry a maximum of 30 kV
static voltage in a dry environment, which could remain on human body
for a long time. An operator carrying static electricity may discharge
electricity through the component when touching a component, causing
damage to it.
Wear an antistatic wrist strap in order to prevent human static electricity
from damaging sensitive components. Ground the other end before

touching any equipment or holding a plug-board, circuit board, IC chip,
and others.
Plugging Modules
1. Hold the panel of the module with both hands and keep it level. Insert
the module into the corresponding slot of the shelf, as shown in Figure
69.

2. Push the board slowly until it contacts the backplane. Press down the
interface module slightly to connect its connector firmly to connection
socket of the switch. Fasten screws on the panel of the module. Figure
70 shows the effect after completion.

Unplugging Modules
Unscrew fastening screws on the panel, and pull the module out of the slot
gently.
Precautions:
1. Avoid hot plugging/unplugging
ZXG10 BS21 (V2.2) adopts separate power supply and takes protective
measures on the circuit for the module power supply for hot swapping.
However, components like power sockets can withstand only a limited
times of electric surge, to avoid hot plugging/unplugging.
2. Disconnect corresponding circuit breaker in PSM before installing a
module into the cabinet, push the module along the guide rail, and
close the circuit breaker.
Disconnect corresponding circuit breaker in PSM before dismounting
the module from the cabinet, and pull out the module along the guide
rail. Keep the circuit breaker disconnected during the whole process.
Check before Power-on
Check carefully before powering on BS21 after BS21 (V2.2) hardware
installation finishes. Check items:

1. Whether to match plug-in modules installed on the rack with desired
configurations.
2. Whether every module is in position and in good contact. Unplug and
plug it again if necessary.
3. Whether connections of cables between layers of same rack and
between different racks (including cables of the backplane) are correct
and reliable.
4. Whether connection of cables between BS21 and BSC is proper.
5. Whether power input is correct and power voltage is within the
permitted range (nominal AC value: 220 V, permitted fluctuation: 130
V ~ 300 V; nominal DC value: -48 V, permitted fluctuation: -57 V ~ -
40 V).
6. Whether installation of antenna feeder is correct. Note which cell the
antenna feeder belongs to and avoid any wrong connection. Check
whether introduction of any simulation loads if TX transceiver is idle.
Take special care to check that the cable from ETRM module to AEM
unit module and the cable from AEM unit to the antenna is correct, to
prevent any radiation leak.
7. Whether groundings for racks, antennas, and lightning arresters are
correct.
8. Whether nominal values of installed fuses match specifications.
9. Whether set various selecting and controlling switches of the
equipment at the specified start positions.
Caution: Check power and equipment switches carefully to prevent human injury
or damages to the equipment.
Power-on Procedures
Power-on/off procedures:
1. Check to confirm that various power modules are in Off status.
2. Turn the cabinet-top power switch to ON status.
3. Turn on the modules by turning on corresponding open circuit
protective switches of modules on PSM panel in order. Observe normal
response from the indicators on the panel after power-on. Locate and
clear the faults immediately, if not. Figure 71 shows PSM panel.

Use a paper slip to check normal operation of heat exchanger. Check for
start of internal and external circulation fans.
Do not put fingers or modules in the fan when replacing the devices
around the fan, to avoid any human injury or damages to devices.
Warning: Do not put finger or any tool into internal circulation fan on the plug-in
box before turning off the heat exchanger when removing/installing modules, to
avoid human injury and damages to the equipment.
Keep fingers or body off any running dangerous parts.
Always keep away parts, screws, and tools when replacing related parts.
Make sure they will not fall into the working heat exchanger fan or PSM
plug-in fans to avoid damages to related devices.
Notes: Only professionals or personnel under the instruction of professinal can
maintain or debug the interior of any equipment.
Replacing any parts or altering the equipment may cause an unexpected
danger. Therefore, be sure not to replace any parts or alter the equipment
unless authorized. Please contact ZTE if having any questions, to ensure
safety.
Procedures of power-off are in a reverse sequence as those of power-on.

Packaging, Storage and
Transportation
In this appendix, you will learn about:

Storage
Transportation
Packaging
BS21 is packaged and transported as a whole unit. The package is damp-
proof, rainproof, shockproof, mold-proof and anti-static. The mechanical
conditions are compliant with ETSI 300 019-1-2 class2.2. Keep the
equipment intact when transporting at 25 ~ 40 km/h for continuous two
hours on national grade-3 highway.
Packing materials of BTS (V2.2) are (from inside to outside): antistatic bag,
foam material, and wooden box. The wooden box must be able to bear a
weight of more than 400 kg; the foam material consists of benzene-free,
sturdy, and shockproof EPE, whose static pressure is 0.08 kg/cm
2
and
compression travel is less than 4 mm.
Storage
Storage Conditions
Store goods generally in rooms for special purpose and under the charge
of a person designated by the user. The room must satisfy following
conditions:
1. Temperature: 0 C ~ 35 C

Relative humidity: 20% ~ 75% without dense dirt or corrosive
materials around.
2. Avoid any direct sunshine or other thermal radiation.
3. Furnish the warehouse with thermometer, hygroscope, air-conditioner,
ventilation fan, and facilities providing protection against dust, mold,
corrosion, and mice.
4. Install fire control and alarm devices at the warehouse.
5. The warehouse keeper must read the thermometer and hygroscope
every day and keep proper records. Act appropriately if the
temperature and humidity does not meet relevant requirements.
6. The warehouse keeper must keep the warehouse clean and in order.
Do not open the windows or curtains at will.
Storage Precautions
Keep the following in mind when storing the goods:
1. Place the packing box as directed on the packing box with the arrow
pointing upward. Do not place it upside down and do not overlap more
than two boxes.
2. Place computers and boards on top and cables at the bottom. Do not
overlap more than four cartons.
3. Store boards in cartons and insert isolating plates between the boards
to protect the boards against damage due to static electricity. Place no
more than 20 boards in a carton to prevent the boards from pressing
against each other. Wear anti-static wrist strap when handling the
boards.
4. Place the box storing boards on rack to protect board from moisture.
Transportation
Pack BS21 with clear waterproof and quakeproof marks for transportation.
Handle the equipment with care and protect it from sun and rain.
1. Precede product transporting with proper packaging. Cover the
products with canvas to guard against dampness and rain.
2. Place the packing boxes in order, close to each other, safe, and neat to
prevent them from shaking and subsequent damage during
transportation. Place certain products right side up.
3. Perform the following.
i. Do not load the equipment in an open ship or truck during line haul.
ii. Do not place the equipment in an open-air warehouse during the
transshipment.
iii. Do not put the equipment together with flammable, explosive and
erosive goods.

iv. Protect the parts from rain, snow, liquids, or mechanical damage.
4. Handle the product with care without rolling or inverting.
5. Do not transship the equipment too many times. Load and unload it
properly. Handle the equipment through machinery and avoid rough
handling.
