ABSTRACT
The Trans,ission $ontrol Protocol (T$P* carries ,ost Internet traffic# so -erfor,ance of the
Internet de-ends to a great e6tent on how well T$P wor.s/ Perfor,ance characteristics of a
-articular version of T$P are defined by the congestion control algorith, it e,-loys/ This
-a-er -resents a survey of various congestion control -ro-osals that -reserve the original
host7to7host idea of T$PCna,ely# that neither sender nor receiver relies on any e6-licit
notification fro, the networ./ The -ro-osed solutions focus on a variety of -roble,s# starting
with the basic -roble, of eli,inating the -heno,enon of congestion colla-se# and also
include the -roble,s of effectively using the available networ. resources in different ty-es of
environ,ents (wired# wireless# high7s-eed# long7delay# etc/*/ In a shared# highly distributed#
and heterogeneous environ,ent such as the Internet# effective networ. use de-ends not only
on how well a single T$P based a--lication can utiliDe the networ. ca-acity# but also on how
well it coo-erates with other a--lications trans,itting data through the sa,e networ./ 9ur
survey shows that over the last 13 years ,any host7to7host techni?ues have been develo-ed
that address several -roble,s with different levels of reliability and -recision/ There have
been enhance,ents allowing senders to detect fast -ac.et losses and route changes/ 9ther
techni?ues have the ability to esti,ate the loss rate# the bottlenec. buffer siDe# and level of
congestion/ The survey describes each congestion control alternative# its strengths and its
wea.nesses/ Additionally# techni?ues that are in co,,on use or available for testing are
described/
