Profile Description
Aristotle University of Thessaloniki,the
largest university in Greece with41
departments and more than 60
000students, was legislated in 1925.
Theobjective of the School of
Architectureis Integral Education. Integral
Educationis ensured with the unity of fi
rstly,Architectural Design and Spatial
Planning,secondly, Design Planning
andRegeneration, and thirdly, Theory
andPractice.Formal collaboration with
universitiesand institutes worldwide at the
level ofteaching and research has been
establishedin the past ten years.
Structure of the Curriculum
A course of study in architecture takes5
years. Graduates are awarded a Diplomain
Architecture and are given thetitle of
'Architect Engineer'. The degreeawarded
ensures registration with theTechnical
Chamber, and the graduatebecomes in
effect a registered architect.As
fundamental principle of theprogramme of
studies, the unity ofarchitectural studies is
understood asthe synthesis of architectural
educationat all scales of space and in
allspectrum of design planning
andregeneration. The studies in theSchool
cover, in that sense, all areasof
architectural and urban design,urban and
regional planning, landscapeand
environmental design, conservationand
restoration.
Educational programme
The Programme of Studies is a continuous
fi ve-year programme, which leads to an
integral degree. The initial cycle
establishes the unity of studies, the last
cycle completes it. The in-between cycle,
the Programme of Basic Studies, does not
therefore constitute an independent
programme. In the ten semesters of study
all three cycles are covered. The fi rst two
semesters are covered with the
Introduction Programme, the six that follow
with the Programme of Basis Studies, and
the last two with the Graduate Programme.
Studio Programmes There are four studio
programmes (buidling design, restauration,
urban design and urban palnning) in which
design and planning practices are
distinguished and interrelated. The studios
are classifi ed into broad but educationally
coherent areas of design and planning
practice. In every one of the cycles of the
programme all areas of its structure
contribute. This general direction follows
the principles of unity of study and unity of

theory and design. The specialisations by
cycle are the following: A. Introduction
Programme B. Programme of Basic
Studies C. Programme of Graduate
Studies The Programme includes the
Graduate Studios and the Graduate
Dissertations with the following content
and directions: - Architectural and Urban
Design. - Urban Design and Planning.
General Programme Complementary to
the studio programmes is the General
Programme, the aim of which is to develop
theory, representations and discourses,
which cover the entirety of the studio
programmes. The objectives of the
General Programme are: a) the connection
between the design practice attestations
and the general theories, their integration
with the historic context of the arts,
architecture and urbanism, and their
connection to contributing sciences b) the
specialised development of the necessary
for architectural studies representations
and discourses. Theory Theories of
Architecture, Theories of Planning, Design
Theories, History of Architecture, History of
the City and Planning History, History of
Art, Human Sciences, Institutions and Law.
Technology Construction, Building
Technology, Working Drawing, Structural
Engineering, Services, Surveying.
Representations and discourses Fine Arts,
Mathematics, Informatics, Representations
of Space. The typology of the studios
There are three types of studios which
differ in the relationship between teacher
and student, the knowledge-base
prerequisites and their aim. Studios of
direct tuition: They are the studios of the
Introduc-tion Programme and some of the
studios of the Programme of Basic
Studies. These studios, starting from their
particular subject, cultivate a general
aptitude of students to compose as
designers. Studios of indirect tuition: These
are the remaining studios of the
Programme of Basic Studies. They
presuppose an elementary ability to
design, focusing on their particular areas of
interest. Graduate studios: The
compositional ability of the students to deal
with the two design scales; from the
integration of levels in design-planning and
the integration of scales in design, is
completed with these studios. All subjects
are lectured and examined in Greek.
Lectures may also be given in English,
French, Italian and German. The course
duration is three semesters including at
least three months for a diploma project.
Postgraduate studies by research
Doctorates are undertaken by the School
and in cooperation with other Schools.
