A Short History of Electronic Music

The electronic music genre is relatively young. So far the definition of the genre is a type
of music that involves using instruments such as synthesisers. There are many different types of
electronic music, such as dubstep (has a specific beats per minute count around 140.) ,
progressive house (a beat that starts out slow and progressively gets faster.), Electro (more of a
sampled type of music or lyrical music and a lot more beat oriented). There are also many ways
to make electronic music; more professional/wealthy people use devices such as the
synthesizer, computer and/or electrical instruments, such as the electric guitar, piano, and violin.

Electronic music production used to be only for the upper class but then electronic
instruments and technology became more affordable. Now many people make their own
electronic music, such as Techno, Electro or dubstep..

The idea of dubstep first came from the Australian didgeridoo, an instrument in the
shape of a tube that creates a low monotone sound which closely resembles older dubstep. As
it developed, rock and roll influenced the music style to make it more hard. Dubstep was also
influenced by the African Americans in their homeland culture. The culture of modern day
electronic music is usually associated with young adults and teens that usually go to raves and
take pills or drugs such as ecstasy and other illegal substances.

Electronic music was first produced in 1939 when John Cage, an American composer
and musical theorist, issued Imaginary Landscape, No. 1, using turntables. Cage composed
another four of these titled songs between 1942-1952 using only electronic instruments.

CSIRAC was the first (thought to be) computer to publicly demonstrate music for an
audience in August, 1951. One of the early public playings on computer was a pre-recorded
national radio broadcast on the NBC public radio. On February 10
th
, 1961 Lafarr Stuart, a
famous computer programmer, programed Iowa State Universitys supercomputer (Cyclone) to
play a tune.

Electronic music developed more and more throughout the century. It grew exceptionally
in popularity in 2010 when Sonny Moore, better known by his newest stage name, Skrillex,
started to create his own music after quitting the post-hardcore band From First to Last, as the
lead singer. Many people now make livings by publishing their work. Some people even remix a
popular song (legally) and become very popular through the original songs popularity.

All in all the electronic genre of music has changed the world of music forever. Right now
some of the most popular music is electronic music has altered the world of music forever. As
many predict and have for a long time it will probably become the music of the future.
