say hello, drop us an email

hen you buy an Android phone or

tablet, it of course becomes your
property, to do with as you please,
right? Yes! And no. Out of the box, Android
devices have a number of safeguards
designed to prevent you doing things that
could irreparably damage the software build
on the device (or even cause unintended
hardware failure through software changes).
There are obviously good reasons for this,
such as the manufacturer wanting to limit
warranty claims due to user initiated
catastrophic software or hardware failure.
Unfortunately, in Android unlike in full fat
Linux on a home computer theres no way
to step past this safety net to get full access to
the system, better known as root access.
The mechanisms to get access to the root
account, also known as the Superuser
account, are removed in shipping Android
builds and have to be manually restored via
the process known as rooting.

Getting started
The rooting process itself varies from device
to device. On some devices, an exploit is
used, which lets apps take advantage of a
security hole in the system to gain temporary
root access. After doing so, the su binary can
be installed, which in turn is used to elevate
permissions on demand. If a working exploit
is not available, unlocking the bootloader can
help root many devices. After unlocking,
ashing a custom recovery enables
installation of the su binary. Not all devices
can be rooted this way as some devices ship
with a bootloader that cannot be unlocked,
normally at the request of the operator.
Unlocking the bootloader normally
involves an application called fastboot. By
rebooting the device in bootloader mode, the
fastboot binary can talk to the device from
your PC and issue commands. There are a
number of these, but the ones generally used
for unlocking are fastboot oem unlock and
conversely fastboot oem lock for re-locking
the device. On Nexus phones and tablets,
unlocking really is as simple as issuing these
commands. On other devices however, the
manufacturer may require you to complete
an extra step. HTC phones, for example,
require you to extract an unlock token (using
a special fastboot command), paste it into its
HTCdev.com site after which it will send you
an unlock le that you push to the device,
again using fastboot.
One point to note is that generally
speaking, unlocking the bootloader on a
device will wipe that device. This is not
necessarily a big issue if you remember and
back up rst, but it can denitely be a pain if
you forget. Of course, most of the Android
backup utilities rely on root access to work

their magic one exception is Helium backup

by Koush, which uses a PC-based activation
tool to circumvent this restriction.
Installing the Superuser binary obviously
opens a security hole by allowing root access,
and on Android, a companion app is usually
included that acts as a gatekeeper between
applications and full access to the device.
When an app requests root, the user is
prompted with a dialogue asking them to
conrm that they wish to grant root
privileges. This can be used to ensure that
malicious apps do not abuse root access. This
prompt can be actioned on a one-off basis or
can persist for that application, either
granting or denying root access.
For obvious reasons, rooting a device
provides vastly increased scope for
accidentally doing something bad that
renders the device unbootable. In this
scenario, a manufacturer stock ROM ash
can act as a safety net enabling users to
revert the device to the factory state but
these are not always available, particularly
on newly released devices. Once root access
is gained or just after unlocking the
bootloader it is generally a good idea to
install a custom recovery.

How to back up and restore your phone

How to back up

1 Flash a custom recovery

Even if you are rooted, to back up and

restore your device you need to install a custom
recovery. If you are rooted, download the
appropriate ClockworkMod or TWRP image for
your device and either ash manually, or use the
Flashify tool detailed elsewhere in this feature.

2 Reboot to recovery

3 Start back up

Rebooting to recovery can be achieved in

a number of ways. Most devices offer a key
combination that can be used from off, but the
method does vary per device. Alternatively you
can use a reboot app or issue an adb reboot
recovery command via your PC.

When your device has rebooted to

recovery, you can either use the touchscreen (if
you have a touch-enabled recovery) or use the
volume buttons and the power button to
navigate through the menu and select the
backup option.

and restore

1 Reboot to recovery

To start the restore, reboot your device to

recovery. If you are restoring because your device
isnt booting correctly, you may need to go and
nd the recovery mode key combination in
Google. Otherwise, an app such as Quick Boot
from Google Play will help you enter recovery.

2 Choose restore options

3 Start restore

You can choose which partitions you

restore. If you have broken something on the
system partition (or wish to revert to a previous
build from a nightly), you can just restore the
system partition. Restoring the data partition will
overwrite changes youve made since backup.

When youve started the restore, make

sure you let it complete and ideally try to be
plugged into mains power. Recovery operations
can be particularly tough on the battery and if the
process is interrupted, you will likely end up with
a non-booting system.

backup and restore options. Performing a

backup at the rst possible opportunity and
copying the backup les to a safe place (ie
pulling them off the device to your computer)
is a very good idea in case of emergency.
Of course, recovery backups (also known as
Nandroid backups after the backup script
they are based on), arent only useful for the
stock image. They provide a quick and
effective way to take a full backup of your
device periodically. Given the sorry state of
Android backup, this is particularly useful.
Backing up in this way is also a good idea just
before you ash or update your custom ROM,
to give you a recovery path should things not
work out quite how you planned.
When the custom recovery is installed, it
overwrites the stock recovery. This may
become an issue if you want to return the
device to a 100% stock state and a factory
image is not available. If you ashed the
recovery after unlocking the bootloader (via
fastboot), then there isnt really another
option. If you ashed the recovery after using
a root exploit, then you can dump a copy of
the stock recovery before overwriting it.
Even if you have taken a copy of the stock
ROM and recovery on your device, this isnt a
complete guarantee that you will be able to
revert the device to its box-fresh state and
that the manufacturer of your device wont b
able to tell that you have rooted (putting the
status of any warranty claims in jeopardy).

Most manufacturers now have some sort of

ag on the device indicating that the
bootloader has been unlocked or custom
ROMs have been ashed. HTC has a relocked
bootloader state and a tampered message,
Samsung has a custom ROM ash counter,
Motorola has a bootloader unlock message
and LG, too, ag bootloader unlocks. If you
are rooting, proceed with caution.
With regards to the root itself, removing it
is generally straightforward. Most of the

Staying rooted
When you purchase a new device, if it has a
root solution available already, it can be
tempting to root it as soon as you get it out of
the box. Generally speaking, this is a bad
idea as should you need to return the device
it may well complicate the process. Before
you root, give the device a thorough check
and test to ensure there are no issues then
you can start having your fun.
Once you have root on your device,
particularly if you got there using an exploit
method, you should be careful when
applying OTA ROM updates from your device
manufacturer. Updates often close known
security holes and remove root access, so you
could nd that you lose root and are unable
to gain it again. This is less of an issue if you
have unlocked the bootloader (as you can
generally load up the custom recovery and
reapply the root zip), but in this case the
issue is slightly different custom recoveries
can often cause the OTA zip installation to
fail. You may need to revert to the stock
recovery to update then restore your custom
recovery afterwards.

Rooting FAQ

Can I root my
Android device?

Is the process of rooting my

device safe?

What is the best way to nd

root apps?

Most devices can be rooted today, with the

exception generally being devices that are a brand
new release. In this situation root solutions will
often become available as more developers get
access to the device. The best place to look for
root solutions is the development forums for your
device at XDA-Developers.com.

If you stay within the constraints of your own

knowledge after youve rooted, then generally, its
relatively safe. Rooting your device and running
widely available root apps shouldnt cause big
issues. Youre more likely to have problems when
you re up the command line and start hacking
around yourself. Again, a degree of caution is a
good idea if youre blindly typing in commands
where you dont know what theyre doing, youre
asking for trouble.

The most obvious way to nd root apps is just by

typing root into the Play store and seeing what
comes up. Some applications however do such
dastardly things with their root access that the
developers prefer not to list their apps in the
store. In this instance, the software or device
software forums at XDA-Developers are a good
place to look.

Will rooting invalidate

my warranty?
Generally speaking, yes manufacturers will
normally state that rooting will invalidate your
warranty although in reality, not all devices give
away the fact that they have been rooted and for
those that do, theres often a way to revert this.
The best advice we can give wannabe hackers is
to proceed with caution check your device is
working properly before rooting and do your best
to revert root before returning your device for a
warranty claim.

What is the best

Superuser app?
In years gone by ChainsDDs app has been the
Superuser app of choice, but recently SuperSU by
Chainre has become the one to have. Its
frequently updated to deal with the increasing
complexities of root introduced by each new
Android version, is free (with a paid pro option
available) and works great. Highly recommended.

WorldMags.net

How do I get my device back

to factory state?
The process of reverting your device back to the
factory state varies depending on the device in
question. The device forum at XDA-Developers is
yet again a good place to look. Hopefully you took
a backup when you originally reverted, which will
help you unroot. For HTC devices, a RUU can
remove root, for Samsung devices its an Odin
ash and similar factory ashers are also
available for Sony and LG devices.

We mentioned earlier that root access gives

you full access to do what you please on your
own device as it should be. Unfortunately,
there is one manufacturer for which this is
not quite the case. HTC devices have a
secondary level of protection, which means
that even if you have root access, any
changes you make to the system partition
(where all the OS les live) are lost when you
reboot. This protection is active whenever the
syst m is booted, if your device is S-ON.
There are two ways to get around this

problem. The rst is to make any

modications to the system les when the
device is in recovery mode (using a custom
recovery), the second is to convert your
device to S-OFF. The process for this depends
on which model you have the HTC One (M8),
for example, uses an app called Firewater to
achieve this state. S-OFF gives a level of
access on par with that of an engineering
device, which comes with the usual caveats
be careful or you can break things.

What to do with root

Explore the data partitions

on your device after you have
root access

The primary motivation for root access is to

allow apps to gain elevated privileges,
enabling them to do things that apps wouldnt
normally be able to do within Androids
ermissions system. The ipside of this is that
once you grant an app root permissions, it is
outside of the usual Android safety net
permission limitations dont apply and it really
could be doing absolutely anything on your
device and with your data. Make sure you trust
the root apps you install.
Explorer apps are limited to viewing only
the SD card and areas of the le system that
are deemed to be publicly accessible, such as
the system partition. The data partition is
denitely a no-go area. Root access gets
around this limitation, giving full access to
everywhere. While you can view the contents
of the system partition even if you dont have
root access, it would normally be mounted
read only. Root access lets you remount the
partition as read/write and change things.
This unbridled access to all apps data also
enables fully featured backup apps, which
can work both locally and with cloud storage
services a very valuable benet of rooting.

Root access gives additional access to the

network settings of a device. Normally on
Android, it is not possible to change settings
such as the DNS servers. Changing the DNS
settings is useful to allow use of services such
as unblock-us or Overplay, providers that use
DNS trickery to make your device appear that
it is in another country. The most common
uses for this are to allow geo-targeted apps
such as Hulu to work outside the US, iPlayer
to work outside the UK (perhaps when you
are on holiday) or to make Netix think you
are in the US, thereby offering a much larger
movie library. Even simply changing from a
network providers own DNS servers to a
service such as Google DNS or Open DNS can
provide performance improvements, so its a
very useful ability to have. A number of
applications are available on the Play store to
facilitate this.
Android provides the ability to disable
certain applications without uninstalling
them, but some system apps cannot normally
be disabled (generally speaking, carrier
bloatware falls into this category). Using root
access and the right application, this
limitation no longer applies. Once again,
things can go badly wrong if you disable a
vital system component some apps that
arent normally able to be disabled are set up
that way for a good reason.
With a rooted device and a custom
recovery, the gateway is opened to installing
custom ROMs. For most devices a huge
number of custom ROMs are available to
download with widely varying features and
its easy to ash them and nd one that suits
your needs. Installation of ROMs like
CyanogenMod, AOKP and Paranoid Android
are enabled via custom recoveries too.

Tweak and improve

While custom ROMs are very popular (and
often fantastic), many users like to stick with
their stock ROM but utilise tweaks and
improvements that arent normally available
without root access. This is enabled by hook
frameworks, which intercept system
functions, replacing them with alternatives
provided by downloadable modules. Virtually
anything can be changed, both from a visual
perspective and in the operating systems
core code its a very powerful tool. The two
most popular root frameworks are Xposed
Framework and Cydia Substrate.
Android is great, but there is one mystical
area that troubles pretty much all Android
owners battery life. While the majority of
applications are well behaved and dont go
hammering the battery in the background, it
does happen, and when it does, it can be
difcult to diagnose exactly what is going on.
Root access provides apps with access to
enhanced tools for tracking offending apps.
A popular area of tweaking that is enabled
on a rooted device is the ability to overclock/
overvolt a devices CPU. In reality there is less
interest now than there was previously as
devices get more powerful, but some users
will always want to eke out every last bit of
performance. The ability to underclock/
undervolt is equally useful from a batterysaving view. It goes without saying that
ramping up the processor in a device could
cause physical damage and adjusting speeds
and voltages downwards can lead to a very
unstable device. But if you have root and a
suitable kernel, there are apps such as
SetCPU that will let you play with your
settings. Root is all about choice after all.

Virtually anything can be changed,

both from a visual perspective and in
the operating systems core code
Are there any downsides to rooting your
device aside from the warranty concerns? Yes
generally around applications that
specically check for root access and stop
working if root is found. Banking and
nancial applications are obvious candidates
here and you can understand why, however
streaming applications such as Sky Go also
detect root and disable streaming on rooted
devices (presumably to reduce the risk of
content being stolen).
So we know that rooti
potentially dangerous and is not for
the faint hearted. You might be
surprised to hear that some devices
ship pre-rooted! How is that
possible? Some Android tablets, in
particular those imported from
Chinese manufacturers, ship with
software that is effectively an
engineering build with root left in
for the engineers. Its not root as
we know it however, it

modding to breath new
life into your device

Use Greenify to improve battery life

ne of the realities for Android ownership

is that when you have a lot of applications
installed on your device, it can adversely
affect both battery life and overall device

1 Download and
install Greenify
Greenify can be installed via the Play store. The
application is a free download, however a
donation version is also available (priced at
1.99/$2.99) that activates additional
experimental features. Greenify does work on
non-rooted devices, but works best when rooted
with Xposed installed.

performance. The simple reason for this is that

even when you are not using an app in the
foreground, there may be background
services running or the app and its software may

be active in the background. Greenify cleverly

resolves this issue by completely hibernating
background apps so that they no longer consume
any resources.

and congure

3 Hibernate background
applications

After downloading Greenify to your device, you

should also load the Xposed conguration
page and enable the Greenify Xposed module
before rebooting. In the Greenify app itself a
number of advanced options are available for
features such as keeping notications for
hibernated apps and GCM wakeup.

In the bottom-left of Greenify youll see a +.

Pressing this will bring up a list of apps running in
the background. A number of these will be apps
you want to leave alone, but for apps you clearly
dont need, just click their entry and tap the tick
button to enable hibernation. A button is also
available to hide chosen apps from the list.

S-OFF your HTC One

Enhance reboot menu Disable notications

Root lets you do a lot of cool stuff on your HTC One

(M7 or M8), but if you want to be able to do
everything, you need S-OFF access. Without it, any
changes you make to the system partition while
booted will be reverted on reboot.

Using a third-party app or ADB every time you want

to reboot to recovery or bootloader is a bit of a
pain. Thanks to the Xposed framework, you can
download and activate a module that expands the
regular reboot menu to include additional options.

Android offers the option to disable notications

from certain apps by long pressing a notication,
selecting App Info and unchecking the Show
notications box. The problem is, this doesnt work
for all apps step forward NotifyClean.

First up you need to make sure that you

have root access on your device and a
working ADB connection (adb is installed as part
of the Android SDK). You can check by doing adb
shell from your PC, then typing su and ensuring
you get a # prompt.

In order to use the module, you need to

ensure you have the Xposed Framework
installed. Install the framework APK from http://

xposed.installer, and use the applications built-in
install feature to activate. A reboot is required.

NotifyClean is another Xposed module,

so of course you need the Xposed
framework installed. The module can be installed
from the Download section in the Xposed app.
After downloading, activate and reboot.

The actual S-OFF tool is called Firewater

and can be downloaded from http://
rewater-soff.com. Full instructions are included
on the site and involve pushing the rewater le
to your phone, running it, and waiting patiently.

The GravityBox module is a ne choice

not just for the enhanced reboot menu,
but also for a host of mods. It can be installed
from within the Xposed app nd GravityBox in
the modules section, activate and reboot.

The S-ON/S-OFF status of your HTC isnt

visible while its booted you need to
check the text at the top of the screen when in
bootloader mode. Use a tool like Quick Boot or
type adb reboot bootloader via ADB.

A GravityBox icon appears in the launcher.

In the Power Tweaks section, the
Advanced Reboot menu checkbox enables the
additional options. Enable and you will see them
when selecting the power button reboot menu.

WorldMags.net

After reboot, a NotifyClean icon appears

in the launcher. NotifyClean works by
tracking apps that are passed to the system for
display. Ensure that the notication you want to
block is displayed, then open NotifyClean.

In the NotifyClean app youll see a long

list of all the applications that have
displayed notications. Find the app you want to

of the different notications from that app. You
can just turn off one specic notication by
clicking it it will turn red.

icon in the launcher to start. A wizard
takes you through the setup, including checking
for root. The app can be congured to use either
a black list (block these numbers) or a white list
(block everyone except these numbers).

When youve found a font you like the

look of, simply tap install and use the
built-in backup option too just for good measure.
Your device will automatically reboot and your
new font will be activated!

Edit the black list to add numbers you

would like to block. You can either select

group such as not in contacts. Settings lets you
choose if calls, messages or both are blocked.

plain) Roboto font included with Android? JRummy

looking for it provides the ability to install

you are using a HTC device, you must have S-OFF
status as well as root.

Launch the app and click the button that

to know what ROM version you are on in order to
build the delta updates, so select your original
ROM zip here. If youve deleted it already, you can
re-download from http://get.cm.

Now that you have congured the app, it

will periodically check for nightly updates
and show a notication when updates are
available. You will be able to view a changelog and
download the small update le for automatic
installation via recovery.
