Why grooming
is a must!!
by Jessie Kartes
With at least 62% of American homes
owning at least one pet, averaging 83
million dogs and cats in the U.S., thats
a whole lot of fuzzy guys and gals
needing a regular grooming schedule.
Many owners dont know how impor-
tant a professional grooming really is. It
should be common practice to take
your dog or cat to the groomer every 6-
8 weeks.
There are several reasons why groom-
ing is beneficial to your dog or cats
health and not just for their beautifica-
tion. Coat care is a major consideration
with many long haired breeds. The long
coat needs frequent brushing to avoid
mats. Mats can be quite painful, as they
pull on the skin. Not only can your dog
or cat suffer from the pulling from the
mats, but they could also develop skin
conditions and sores from the bacteria
that develop under the mats. As a
groomer it pains me to have to resort to
shaving a dog completely or trying to
brush out un-kept hair. If you want to
minimize or prevent the start of mats
keep a regular schedule of brushing,
going with a shorter coat length, or just
maintaining a cut to your liking to keep
your furry friend looking cute and
clean. For our short to medium coated
breeds, it is just as important to keep a
regular routine with your groomer as
well. A schedule with the groomer
keeps the coat thin, healthy and shinny
and reduces the amount of fur in the
house and on yourself.
There are other benefits to routine
grooming as well. A groomer may be
able to spot new lumps, hot spots, ear
infections or other underlying skin
issues that might need to be discussed
with your vet. A well trained groomer,
such as myself, will be able to tell you
immediately if your dog or cat has fleas,
ticks, ear mites, or other parasites that
may not be easily detected.
In addition to your pets grooming
schedule, it is also important for regu-
lar nail trims as well. Over grown nails
can lead to an unnatural posture, which
can lead to arthritis in their legs and
hips, or may cause the increased risk of
your dog snagging nails in between
deck boards, carpeting, or furniture. So
in turn I recommend you bring your
furry friends in every 2-4 weeks to pre-
vent the negative effects of long nails.
Petting our dogs and cats provides
emotional and physical benefits for
humans and even lowers blood pres-
sure. Its a lot easier to cuddle with a
clean, happy, and healthier dog or cat

The upcoming Taste of Germantown will
be an opportunity for residents to experience
local restaurants in one place while learning
about the Kiwanis Club of Germantowns
plans for a pavilion in Firemans Park.
The event will be held from 4 to 9 p.m.
July 17 at Firemans Park. A cocktail party will
be held at 4 p.m. where a video detailing
plans for the Kiwanis Performing Arts Pavilion
will be premiered. The Kiwanis will use the
party to recognize donors to the pavilion
project. The pre-party event will be by invita-
tion and is for potential sponsors of the com-
munity Performing Arts Pavilion to meet each
other and build support.
At 5 p.m. Taste of Germantown will for-
mally open to the public. Restaurants within
the Germantown community will be offering
their unique cuisine. The costs of the entrees
will not exceed $7 so that everyone can enjoy
a great party at a very affordable cost.
Carol Miller of the Kiwanis Club of
Germantown said the event is designed to
make the public aware of the Kiwanis efforts
to raise funds for the pavilion. The club decid-
ed in May to organize the Taste of
Germantown event, and has been working on
the event the past few months.
The clubs goal for the pavilion is to break
ground on the structure in September 2015
and have it completed by the next year. Once
the pavilion is constructed it will be donated
to the village Park and Recreation Department
for use by the community. The pavilion will be
located in Firemen's Park adjacent to the exist-
ing park shelter. There will be access from
Crusader court.
Major supporters for the project include
ICP-International Concrete Products and
Wendland Nursery.
Miller added that the club is hoping the
Taste of Germantown becomes an annual
event in the community.

The Schauer Community School of the
Arts is excited to partner with First Star Media
to present Script to Screen Camp Monday-
Wednesday, July 28-30. The camp is an
introductory movie production class that will
bring out students creativity and passion.
Script to Screen Camp introduces the
process of creating short films. Youth ages 11
to 15 will go through the steps of writing,
directing, and acting in their very own film.
All equipment necessary in making the digital
film will be provided, including Canon HD
camcorders and professional audio equip-
ment. Each student will be mailed home a
copy of the finished project. Students who
enroll should plan on bringing a lunch each
day of the camp.
Instructor Nick Bailey is the current owner
of First Star Media based in Waukesha.
Since they began filming weddings and
dance recitals in 2006, First Star Media has
quickly become the regions favorite choice
for videography for dance recitals, wed-
dings, and much more. In 2011 the group
released Diary of an Ex-Child Star which is
currently being pitched to network television
stations.
To register or request a brochure, contact
the Schauer Center by phone at (262) 670-
0560, ext. 4 or in person, Monday through
Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., at 147
N. Rural Street in Hartford. Enrollment is lim-
ited. For a complete list of classes and

tury. I grew up in Menomonee Falls and
know first-hand the impact Community
Memorial Hospital has had on health care
in this community.
The hospitals journey began with a
small group of local visionaries who
accepted the challenge to build a hospital
in what was then a farm field in a rural
community outside of Milwaukee. Founded
by and for the citizens of Menomonee Falls
and the surrounding communities,
Community Memorial Hospital was the
dream of a few that became a reality for
many. On July 1, 1964, the hospital
opened its doors with 61 beds, a team of
16 physicians and a total staff of 70. The
hospital on the hill, as it was known in the
early years, became a major medical cen-
ter for the surrounding communities.
Today, Community Memorial Hospital
offers 202 beds, a medical staff of nearly
600 and more than 1,300 total staff mem-
bers. During the past five decades,
Community Memorial Hospital has wel-
comed more than 42,000 babies into the
world. Accredited by The Joint
Commission, Community Memorial
Hospital is a full-service hospital that spe-
cializes in cancer care, heart and vascular
care, orthopaedics, womens health and
advanced surgical procedures. Community
Memorial Hospital is part of the Froedtert
& the Medical College of Wisconsin health
care network, which also includes
Froedtert Hospital, Milwaukee; St Josephs
Hospital, West Bend; and more than 30
primary and specialty care health centers
and clinics.

(StatePoint) As a result of the recent housing crisis,
many potential homebuyers, especially first-timers, are
hesitant to enter the market. But if youre holding back,
evaluate why. Experts say your reasons may be based
on myth.
Buying a home is more affordable than ever for
families with stable incomes and good credit, says
Christina Boyle, Vice President and Head of Single-
Family Sourcing & Relationship Management, at
Freddie Mac.
So before ruling out homeownership, get the facts.
Boyle is offering some tips to help you sort fact from fic-
tion.
Myth: I need to make a big downpayment, as
much as 20 percent, to get a mortgage.
Fact: A 20 percent downpayment is not the gold-
en rule. Generally you should expect to put down about
five or 10 percent. Note however, you may be required
to pay mortgage insurance if you make a downpayment
of less than 20 percent.
When deciding whether homeownership is right for
you, dont forget to consider other expenses like closing
costs, property taxes, and maintenance costs.
Myth: I need perfect credit to buy a home and will
never qualify for a loan.
Fact: In response to the housing crisis, banks re-
evaluated the criteria for lending money to help put buy-
ers in a more financially comfortable position and
ensure they can afford what they buy.
So while its true that getting a mortgage today
requires a stronger credit history than in past years, you
dont need perfect credit. Keep in mind though, that the
higher your score, the more options you have when
looking for a mortgage.
Myth: I dont make enough money to own a home
so I plan to rent for the long-term.
Fact: In many areas of the country, it is more afford-
able to own a home than rent one, especially as rents
are rising fast.
With a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage, youll have
the certainty of knowing what your mortgage payment
will be for 30 years, whereas rents could continue to
rise.
Despite these facts, note that homeownership is not
necessarily the right step for everyone.
If you move frequently or dont have time for home
maintenance, renting might make more sense for your
lifestyle.
Myth: Mortgage rates are rising too fast and Ive
missed the window of opportunity to buy.
Fact: While mortgage rates have risen over the
past year, they are still at near historic lows, with a 30-
year fixed mortgage under 4.5 percent at the start of
2014. These rates make homeownership very afford-
able.
For comparative purposes, in 2000, rates aver-
aged eight percent; and in the 80s, they spiked to 18.5
percent. To put that in perspective, a mortgage payment
on a $150,000 loan at todays 4.5 percent is $760 per
month, whereas in 2000, it would have been $1,100
(not including taxes and insurance).
Free home buying resources, such as worksheets,
mortgage calculators, and overviews of the mortgage
process are available at www.FreddieMac.com.
