The Indian automobile industry
The manufacturer industry in India started in 1947. In the earliest years of the industry and till the 1980s, the economic protectionism made that only a few small manufacturers (such as Tata Motors or Bajaj Auto) could stand in the market. In 1981, Maruti Udyog was created and launched the Maruti 800 the peoples car, a small low-priced car, which made Maruti to gain over a 50% in the market share and to become the leader in the market. Concerning the automotive industry, until the mid 80s, most Indian automobile companies relied in a policy of using more than one ancillary for a product. That signifies that companies had little incentive to increase its capacity or to improve technology. As a result of that policy, the rate of defective parts was higher for Indian automobile companies than that of the global average. The situation changed with the entrance of the Maruti 800 due to the fact that it required components that adhered to stringent quality standards.
The liberalization of the market was conducted in 1991 and that attracted a big number of foreign car manufacturers to India. General Motors, Toyota, Honda and Hyundai they all came and set up manufacturer plants in India. Sales of commercial cars grew at an approximately rate of 15% between 1994 and 1997 till the recession of 1998 and 1999, which drastically cut that pace. With the recovery of the economy and a GDP growing at rates of 6 6.5%, the automobile industry resume its pace and again start growing at fast rates. (Exhibit 1). A survey conducted by the Confederation of Indian industry (CII) indicates that the growing density of cars in India rose from 10 per 10,000 people in 1971 to 35 in 1991 and that was close to 100 in 1999. 55% of indias cars were in the four metro cities by 1999.

4) Suzuki Motor Corporation ( Suzuki Kabushiki- Kaisha ? ) is a Japanese multinational corporation headquartered in Hamamatsu, Japan that specializes in manufacturing compact automobiles and 4x4 vehicles, a full range of motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), outboard marine engines, wheelchairs and a variety of other small internal combustion engines. Suzuki is the 9th largest automobile manufacturer in the world by production volume, [4]
employs over 45,000 people, has 35 main production facilities in 23 countries and 133 distributors in 192 countries. [citation needed] According to statistics from the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA), Suzuki is Japan's second-largest manufacturer of small cars and trucks. "Suzuki" is pronounced [suzuki] in Japanese, with a high tone on the [ki]. It is pronounced /szuki/ s-ZOO-kee in English, with a stressed zu. This pronunciation is used by the Suzuki company in marketing campaigns directed towards English-speakers. 5)History suzuki: In 1909, Michio Suzuki (18871982) founded the Suzuki Loom Works in the small seacoast village of Hamamatsu, Japan. Business boomed as Suzuki built weaving looms for Japan's giant silk industry. [5] In 1929, Michio Suzuki invented a new type of weaving machine, which was exported overseas. Suzuki filed as many as 120 patents and utility model rights. [citation needed] The company's first 30 years focused on the development and production of these exceptionally complex machines. [citation needed]
Despite the success of his looms, Suzuki realized his company had to diversify and he began to look at other products. Based on consumer demand, he decided that building a small car would be the most practical new venture. The project began in 1937, and within two years Suzuki had completed several compact prototype cars. These first Suzuki motor vehicles were powered by a then-innovative, liquid- cooled, four-stroke, four-cylinder engine. It featured a cast aluminum crankcase and gearbox and generated 13 horsepower (9.7 kW) from a displacement of less than 800cc. With the onset of World War II, production plans for Suzuki's new vehicles were halted when the government declared civilian passenger cars a "non-essential commodity." At the conclusion of the war, Suzuki went back to producing looms. Loom production was given a boost when the U.S. government approved the shipping of cotton to Japan. Suzuki's fortunes brightened as orders began to increase from domestic textile manufacturers. But the joy was short-lived as the cotton market collapsed in 1951. Faced with this colossal challenge, Suzuki's thoughts went back to motor vehicles. After the war, the Japanese had a great need for affordable, reliable personal transportation. A number of firms began offering "clip-on" gas-powered engines that could be attached to the typical bicycle. Suzuki's first two-wheel ingenuity came in the form of a motorized bicycle called, the "Power Free." Designed to be inexpensive and simple to build and maintain, the 1952 Power Free featured a 36 cc, one horsepower, two-stroke engine. [6] An unprecedented feature was the double-sprocket gear system, enabling the rider to either pedal with the engine assisting, pedal without engine assist, or simply disconnect the pedals and run on engine power alone. The system was so ingenious that the patent office of the new democratic government granted Suzuki a financial subsidy to continue research in motorcycle engineering, and so was born Suzuki Motor Corporation. In 1953, Suzuki scored the first of many racing victories when the tiny 60 cc "Diamond Free" won its class in the Mount Fuji Hill Climb. [6]

1955 Suzulight By 1954, Suzuki was producing 6,000 motorcycles per month and had officially changed its name to Suzuki Motor Co., Ltd. Following the success of its first motorcycles, Suzuki created an even more successful automobile: the 1955 Suzuki Suzulight. Suzuki showcased its penchant for innovation from the beginning. The Suzulight included front-wheel drive, four-wheel independent suspension and rack-and-pinion steeringfeatures common on cars half a century later. History of maruti: In 1981, when there were basically only 2 car models running on the Indian roads :Ambassador and premier Padmini, a fledgeling company was setup that had a stake from the Indian government and a small Japanese manufacturer in those days. With the setting up of this indigeneous company gave the birth to the Automobile revolution in India. The company that made history year after year since its first model known as the 800, Maruti has defined the modern Indian automotive industry. The History: Maruti company named after the son of Hanuman- Marut- the GOD of the Wind, has truly created a sandstorm in the Indian Automotive world after its inception in 1981. Initially supported by late Sanjay Gandhi, son of the late Prime minister, Indira Gandhi and borrowing the Japanese technology from its parent Suzuki motors ,Maruti Udyog started manufacturing cars from 1983, Since then Maruti has overtook every rival and has been the leader of the car manufacturing in India in terms of production, revenues and profits. With over 15 models ranging from the Grand Vitara (which is completely imported SUV from Japan ) to the new models such as the A star, ritz and the Swift series, Maruti continues its unimaginable dominance in the indian subcontinent.
