The 86th Academy Awards ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS),
will honor the actors, technical achievements, and films of 2013 and will take place March 2, 2014, at the Dolby
Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles. The ceremony is scheduled one week later than usual to avoid conflicting with
the broadcasting of the 2014 Winter Olympics. During the ceremony, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and
Sciences will present Academy Awards of Merit (commonly referred to as Oscars) in 24 categories. The ceremony
will be televised in the United States by ABC, produced by Neil Meron and Craig Zadan, and directed by Hamish
Hamilton. Comedian Ellen DeGeneres will host the show for the second time. DeGeneres hosted the 79th ceremony
in 2007.

Achivements
Woody Allen received a record-breaking 16th nomination for Best Original Screenplay; he broke his own record
of 15 set at the 84th Academy Awards (2011).
[3]
Bruce Dern's Best Actor nomination, at the age of 77, makes him the second-oldest nominee in that category,
behind 79-year-old Richard Farnsworth (The Straight Story).
Megan Ellison received two nominations for Best Picture (American Hustle and Her), making her the first woman
and the third person overall (after Francis Ford Coppola in 1975 and Scott Rudin in 2011) to be nominated twice
in the same year in this category.
With three nominations for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, the Middle-earth franchise collected its 36th
Oscar nomination, the most for any film series in history.
Jennifer Lawrence, at the age of 23, became the youngest actress ever to be nominated for three Academy
Awards.
June Squibb's Best Supporting Actress nomination (Nebraska), at the age of 84, makes her the third-oldest
nominee in that category, behind 87-year-old Gloria Stuart (Titanic) and 85-year-old Ruby Dee (American
Gangster).
Meryl Streep received a record-breaking 18th acting nomination; she broke her own record of 17 set at the 84th
Academy Awards (2011).
[4]
John Williams received his 44th nomination for Best Original Score, passing the late Alfred Newman to become
the category's record holder. The composer who has won five times has 49 overall nominations, the most for a
living person and second only to Walt Disney.
Nearly every film receiving acting nominations garnered at least two such nominations; only Captain Philips,
Gravity, and Philomena received just one acting nomination each. In addition, August: Osage County was the
only film to receive acting nominations to not get a nomination in any other field.

Ceremony information
Box office performance of nominated films
At the time of the Academy Award nomination announcement on January 16, 2014, the combined gross of the nine
Best Picture nominees at the American and Canadian box offices was $645 million, with an average of $72 million
per film.
Only one of the nine Best Picture nominees was among the top ten releases in box office receipts when the Academy
revealed the nominations. Gravity was the highest-grossing film among the Best Picture nominees. Captain Phillips
was the second-highest-grossing film with $105.5 million; this was followed by American Hustle ($105.4 million),
The Wolf of Wall Street ($80.7 million), 12 Years a Slave ($39 million), Philomena ($22.3 million), Dallas Buyers
Club ($16.8 million), Her ($9.9 million), and finally, Nebraska ($8.5 million).
Of the top 50 grossing movies of the year, 47 nominations went to 14 films on the list. Only Frozen (3rd),
Despicable Me 2 (4th), Gravity (7th), The Croods (14th) Captain Phillips (29th), American Hustle (30th), and The
Wolf of Wall Street (42nd) were nominated for Best Picture, Best Animated Feature, or any of the directing, acting,
or screenwriting awards. The other top 50 box office hits that earned nominations were Iron Man 3 (2nd), The
Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (8th), Star Trek Into Darkness (11th), Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa (31st), The
Lone Ranger (38th), and Saving Mr. Banks (49th).
Fruitvale Station Controversy
The Academy received substantially negative feedback from critics and audiences for having not nominated
Fruitvale Station, based on the events leading to the shooting death of Oscar Grant by a BART police officer in
2009, for a single award. The film's appearance on several prominent critics' top ten lists of the best films of 2013
and numerous awards accolades has attracted particular attention to its lack of nominations. It has been speculated
that a July release date, combined with its independent film status, were factors that did not work in its favor.
Best Song controversy
The Academy revoked the Best Original Song nomination for Alone Yet Not Alone's title song after determining that
composer Bruce Broughton violated the Academy's promotional regulations. Broughton, a former Academy
governor and member of the music branch's executive committee, had emailed other music branch members to
inform them of his submission. The 65th Academy Awards had previously disqualified the nomination for A Place in
the World for Best Foreign Language Film.
Best Documentary controversy
The Academy attracted some negative attention following the announcement of the nominations for the exclusion of
documentary film Blackfish.
[5]
The film had inspired numerous protests against SeaWorld for the alleged
mistreatment of killer whales in its care.
Following the "snub," director Gabriela Cowperthwaite stated that she felt the documentary was left out of the
nominations, as it contained mainly archival footage and was not a "work of art," rather than being the result of a
deliberate attempt to "snub" the film based on its message.
