In the opening scene of 'A Doll's House', by Ibsen, what do we learn
about ora and !or"ald's relationship#
Going through the opening scene of A Dolls House, we get a good idea of
the setting of the story and a glimpse of the personalities of the main
characters in the play, namely Torvald and Nora

opening scene, she plays a uni#ue character displaying a playful and childish
personality $he comes o% as someone who &ust does not have the
'nowledge of the world around her This is evident from the Noras childish
mannerisms and (ehavior when she meets Torvald Helmer her hus(and $he
also comes across as one who is very conscious a(out money and " would
thin' this is (ecause of the fact that she doesnt earn any money herself (ut
has an interest in ta'ing care of the household and spending money in
general
Torvald Helmer is portrayed in an interesting way in the opening scene He
comes o% as the authoritative person in the relationship (etween himself
and his wife, Nora He treats her li'e one of his children and also patroni)es
her at the same time To him, Nora comes o% as something he can play with
and manipulate This is evident from his interaction with Nora where he calls
her pet names li'e $'ylar' and $#uirrel The use of these names shows
his thought process towards Nora To Torvald, Nora is somewhat a pet, a form
of entertainment He ta'es care of her and 'eeps her happy so she can ta'e
care of the household and entertain him
The opening scene also gives a glimpse of how women were second to men
socially around the time the play was written *omen were more often than
not, the ones who cleaned the house, raised the children and prepared food
