DPEA

UNITED
Welcome back to the 2014-2015 school year! I hope everyone had a great summer and that
your year is off to a great start. Last year saw big changes for tne'D PEA as we moved from
our Collective Bargaining Agreement and into our handbook per the law changes resulting
from Act 10. We were proud to see that 75% of our members chose to rejoin the
Association. Later, we voted for Recertification and the vote was 245-2 in favor of the DPEA
acting as bargaining agent for the district. There were more votes for Recertification than
we had in total members! The support you gave to the DPEA helped us retain nearly all of
our previous working conditions including total work days of the year, hours worked, pay
for time worked in summer and after school, and no major changes to how the district
determines teacher pay like merit pay or pay based solely on evaluations. We also received
a total pay increase (by percentage) that was among the highest in the area. Compared to
other area districts and districts throughout the state (ask your reps about other area
handbooks) we did exceptionally well. That said, we know everything is not perfect, and
we certainly have a number of issues we are working through with the district. These issues
include the changes to our benefits, our pay structure, and our working conditions. But
unlike many other districts, our good relationship gives us a voice to work together to find
positive solutions.
Moving to the larger picture, the future of Wisconsin public education remains in peril.
Powerful, well-funded interests who don't believe in the concept of a constitutionally-
guaranteed public education for all are working hard to shift public monies to tax-payer
subsidized private schools. They view teachers' unions as an obstacle to this goal. If you
don't think a union has value, ask yourself why would these groups spend hundreds of
millions of dollars trying to eliminate them? We must stand up and fight to preserve public
schools, for our students, our children, and for us, professional educators. This November
presents a huge opportunity to make our voices heard. We can't do it without your support.
With a strong DPEA (and our parent unions WEAC and NEA), we can make a difference for
the future. Will you tolerate fewer dollars for your students and your children as they go
through school? Will you be satisfied making less than your predecessors, having fewer
benefits, and less job security and respect because elected officials have decided we can't
afford to fund public education? Or will you commit to collective action to fight for our
Wisconsin schools?
If you did not join last year we hope you will join now, and if you joined last year we hope
you stay on. We will continue to be good stewards of your hard-earned dues money and will
tirelessly work to advocate on your behalf.
"United we stand, divided we fall" has never
been a more appropriate saying for the future
of our profession. Stand united with us.
In Solidarity,
Paul Roup
DPEA President
