Biography Cheri Bustos is serving her first term in the United States House of Representatives. She serves on the House Agriculture and Transportation and Infrastructure Committees. Cheri is one of the top NRCC targets for the 2014 cycle. Cheri was born in the Illinois state capitol of Springfield into a family that stressed hard work and public service. Cheri began her career in journalism where she uncovered numerous stories of corruption in government and won awards for her work in the field of public service. After a rewarding career in journalism, Cheri went on to work for one of the nations largest non-profit health care systems. Here she helped the disadvantaged navigate the health care system and worked to improve the quality of health care available to families throughout the region. Cheri received a Bachelors Degree in political science from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a Masters Degree in journalism from the University of Illinois at Springfield. She also attended Illinois College, Jacksonville and was inducted into the Illinois College Sports Hall of Fame in 1994. Cheri resides in East Moline with her husband Gerry. They have three grown sons and two grandchildren. The 17 th Congressional District Illinois 17 th Congressional district includes East Moline, Moline, and Rock Island, as well as parts of Peoria and Rockford. In the 2012 campaign, $13.9 million was spent on this race making it the fourth most expensive House race in the country in terms of spending by outside groups, and a record high for the Quad-City area.
