The document discusses the evolving meaning and perceptions of democracy over time. It notes that democracy was not always viewed positively, as it was originally seen as a form of rule by the poorer classes that could be at the expense of the state. However, the popularization of democratic movements in recent centuries has led to competing interpretations of democracy and a loss of its clear meaning. Additionally, the longest association of democracy with a world power, the USA, has helped spread its democratic ideology globally.

Earlier on, before this age of revolution. The commoners and lords would frequently rise against the monarchy. (sometimes together, sometimes alone). However, the uprisings were usually against the monarch incumbent rather than the concept of monarchy itself.
Earlier revolutions were in the name of god, rather than human rights movements (or at least not in the modern sense of human rights)
