- If the two letters are je the missing letter is a first k and the root is jek
- If you find only b, or ,b or only ,, the root is b,b
If not one of the special cases listed above,
the only only only only possibilities are: first Yod, first Nun, middle Vav or Yod (hollow), final Heh, or geminate

- Qamatz under the prefix >> Qal or Hifil, middle Yod/Vav (Qal usually has o/a vowel, Hifil e/ee)
(example: Qal tch , Hifil thch, both from the root tuc)
The Qamatz changes to a Sheva if a longer ending moves the stress to the left: othch from tuc
- Tzere under the prefix >> Qal stem, usually first Yod, rarely final Heh
(examples: gsh from gsh, Qch from vfc)
- Dagesh in the first root letter you have >> Qal stem, usually first Nun, rarely first Yod
(examples: kPh from kpb, eMh from emh ; check lexicon to be sure)
- A vowel indicator h after the prefix >> Qal stem, first Yod (example: trhh from trh )
- A vowel indicator u o after the prefix >> Hifil stem, first Yod (example: chauh from cah )
- A vowel indicator U "oo" after the prefix: Hofal stem, first Yod or middle Yod/Vav
- None of the above, two root letters: final Heh (examples: trh from vtr , CJh from vcJ)
- If all else fails: : : : try geminates (identical 2nd and 3rd root letters like ccx )

- Two root letters, the vowel is Qamatz: Qal, affix 3ms or participle ms of middle Yod/Vav root
(example: tC from tuc )
- Two root letters, the vowel is o or ee: Qal, imperative 2ms or infinitive, middle Yod/Vav root
(examples: tuC or tC from tuc, ohG from ohG, oUe from oue).
- Two root letters, the vowel is Zere: Qal imperative 2ms of a first Yod root (example: cJ from cah)
(exception: very few middle Yod/Vav affix 3ms/participle ms take this vowel, like ,un )
- Two root letters, segolet pattern + , on the end: infinitive of first Yod root (,cJ from cJh )
- Two root letters+ ,u on the end: infinitive of final Heh root ( ,utr from vtr)
- v or n followed by h or u o vowel indicator and two root letters: Hifil, first Yod root (chauv from cah)
- v or n followed by U oo vowel indicator and two root letters: Hofal, first Yod or middle Yod/Vav
- v or n followed by two root letters with a dagesh in the first: Hifil, first Nun root (khPv from kpb)
- If all else fails: : : : try geminates (identical 2nd and 3rd root letters) like ccx
