Group Technology Layout

Group Technology layout is a group of parts into a family of the parts which is similar to a physical appearance.
Needed machines for producing each family of the parts are gathered in group and that is called as Manufacturing
Cell. The cells are in the machines are all dedicated to work on the particular parts. And these are not
interchangeable; it will form a queue on every machine since its dedicated. Here are some types that used in Group
Technology Layout.
Grptec Layout: a group of different kinds of machines which are dedicated to common occurred sequence of the
operation, and the craft which is used to arrange the machine with each cell which are related to each other.
Indmec Layout: this layout is used on an individual machine than the group it arranges 38 dedicated machines related
to each other. The resulting layout is similar to the Grptec Layout. The Group TechnologyLayout has some
important advantages and they are such as like, average time on every setup, limited distance per move, gives the
proper count of no of products completed per year, machine utilization, forming queue, invention on work in process,
average flow time, limited longest queue length and average waiting time.
Average setup time is greater in the process model were the average for every move is longer on an average in the
process and proded models which is shorter in Grptec models. For those average no of products completed on a
year will not have any significant difference between the models. Limited utilization would be larger in the process
model since the setup time is longer. Queue length is shorter in the process model and its a fact on an average
waiting time too. On the process and the proded model the move time is longer, run time would average and it is very
similar on the four models. The major difference of these models occurs on the amount of time which has a batch
waiting for machines to get the availability, and the flow time in the process model is much shorter.
The longer setup time and move time has little synonyms of the products which are completed in very less time. The
Group Technology layout may not be the solutions which may be appear in the literature. May be some situations on
which the Group Technology Layout would be promising and appropriate method of organization. So it is very clear
that there are some issues with its use.
