The Zohar
Herein are excerpts from Tzvi Fishmans soon-to-be-published book, Secret Of The Brit Torah, Kabbalah, And
Sex These essays may be copied and distributed in order to spread the wisdom and light of the Torah. They are
based on the words of our Torah Sages; the secrets of the holy Zohar; and the teachings of the Kabbalist, Rabbi
Eliahu Leon Levi, shlita.
The English translation of the Zohar and notes on the text are also based on a range of holy texts. These include
the commentary of the Sulam to the Zohar; the explanations of the Gaon of Vilna to the Zohar and Tikunei Zohar;
and the wonderfully clear and scholarly commentary on the Zohar, Matok MDvash, written by Rabbi Daniel Frish,
ztzal. Any reader interested in a more detailed analysis of the Zohar is advised to make use of this magnificent
Hebrew commentary, the Matok MDvash, which relies heavily on the writings of the famed Kabbalist, Rabbi
Moshe Cordevero, known as the Ramak.
Because of the Torah secrets involved, and the problems of making them available over the Internet, much of the
material from the book has been edited and abridged.
While the Zohar seems to indicate in several places that there is no tikun (rectification) for transgressions of the
Brit, in other places it states that repentance is indeed possible with a great tshuva (penitence.) All later
authorities agree that tshuva is indeed possible, even for severe sexual transgressions. Furthermore, masters of
the Kabbalah have composed special prayers called tikunim to help the penitent in his path.
General guidelines regarding tshuva, and specific guidelines regarding Tikun HaBrit (rectification of sexual
transgression,) appear in the last chapters of the book. Every reader is encouraged to study them, for it is
precisely regarding these sensitive matters that it is written, For there is not a man who is such a tzaddik
(righteous person,) on earth that does good and never sins, (Kohelet, 7:20.)
May it be the will of the Almighty, that in the merit of the holy Zohar, and in the merit of its saintly author, Rabbi
Shimon Bar Yochai, that the prayer of King David be fulfilled for all of His people, Open Thou my eyes, that I may
behold the wonders of your Torah, (Tehillim, 119:18.)
Sexual Purity
Foundation of the Jewish Nation
It is no secret that in these times of the birth pains of Mashiach, our nation is facing great challenges and
dangers. The rebirth of the nation in Israel, with all of its wondrous victories and achievements, seems to have
stumbled off track.
During the recent Disengagement or Hitnatkut, the Government of Israel evacuated and razed flourishing
Jewish communities in Gush Katif and the Shomron. In the process, cherished portions of the Holy Land,
promised by G-d to the Jews, were given over to an enemy set upon the destruction of Israel. Yet, from the north
and from the south, rocket attacks and terrorism continue with a greater wrath, threatening all of the country.
In addition, for several years now, governmental budget cutbacks to yeshivot and other Torah institutions have
put the Torah world in difficult straits. Concurrently, the Jewish identity of the State is being threatened by the
foreign, non-Jewish ideologies that reign rampant in the Israeli media, the Israeli Supreme Court, the Israel
Ministry of Education, and the Knesset.
Additionally, an obsession with Western Culture has brought a plague of sexual immodesty to the streets of the
Holy Land. Given all of these discouraging factors, it is not surprising that immigration to Israel is down to a
trickle, motivated largely by growing outbreaks of anti-Semitism around the world.
To growing numbers of people in Israel, it is obvious that salvation will not come from the Israeli political system,
nor from new elections, nor political demonstrations and the like. While we have faith that the long-awaited
redemption will surely come, the present situation compels us to do a thorough heshbon nefesh, an inner
accounting, to discover what we can do to stop our nations spiritual decline.
Thus, with so many tribulations hovering over Am Yisrael (the Nation of Israel) and Eretz Yisrael (the Land of
Israel,) it behooves us to explore the inner spiritual factors that disrupt the flow of Divine blessing to the People of
Israel and in doing so, to correct what has gone wrong.
For some time now, the elder Sages of the Kabbalah in Israel have warned that, to a large measure, a root cause
of the tribulations we are facing is the sexual immorality rampant in our Land. Fashions imported from Europe
and America have brought a plague of immodesty to our streets. In addition, it is impossible to approach a
newsstand without being confronted with the photos of sexy models on magazine covers. Our great Jewish
Sages have repeatedly warned that looking at immodestly dressed women and forbidden images stains the
Jewish soul with a terrible pollution (Taharat HaKodesh, Chapter 3; Laws of Tshuva of the Rambam, 4:4.) This
troublesome state is multiplied by the lewdness on television and in the movies, and by the pornography of the
Internet, may G-d save us.
Worse yet, during the wave of Aliyah from Russia, we brought to our Holy Land literally thousands of gentile
women who are working as prostitutes around the clock.
Time and again, the holy Zohar explains that in committing sexual transgressions, the Jewish People violate the
Brit (covenant) between our forefather, Avraham, and G-d. This Brit is the Holy Covenant upon which the Nation
of Israel was founded. The Zohar makes clear that this Holy Covenant involves not only the rite of circumcision,
but also safeguarding the holiness of Jewish sexual life as well. It is this safeguarding of sexual purity, called
Shmirat HaBrit, that insures our attachment to the Holy Land. As the Zohar reveals, this Brit of sexual purity is the
channel that brings the flow of G-ds blessings to Am Yisrael.
Needless to say, if this decline in sexual norms is damaging the material and spiritual state of the Jewish People
in the Holy Land, how much greater the damage to the Jewish People in the impure lands of the Diaspora, where
sexual immorality reigns in all of its destructive force! The growing rate of assimilation outside of Israel bears
witness to this.
What is true for the Jewish nation as a whole is also true for the individual. As the Zohar emphasizes, sexual
transgressions, in whatever form they take, bring a wide gamut of sufferings and tragedies in their wake. When a
persons connection to G-d has been damaged because of sexual wrongdoing, the flow of Divine blessing
normally directed to him is stunted. This is bound to cause problems with health, livelihood, children, married life,
and spiritual fulfillment.
The Baal HaTanya explains that while all transgressions blemish the spiritual channel which brings Divine
blessing to the world, transgressions incurring excision, like the wasting of semen, cause the most damage
(Igeret HaTshuva, Ch.6.) This is true for single and married people alike.
In the holy book, Reshit Chochmah, it is explained that the ten tribes of Israel violated all of the commandments
in the Torah, but exile was only decreed upon them when they transgressed the laws of proper sexual conduct
(See the Gate of Kedusha.)
Referring to the sexual decline of his time, the prophet Yishayahu declares, Your sins have made a separation
between you and your G-d, (Yishayahu, 59:1-2.)
This study, Secret of The Brit - Torah, Kabbalah, and Sex, proposes that by understanding the vital importance of
sexual purity as set forth in the Torah, and as repeatedly explained in the Zohar, we can help repair what we
have blemished, and restore the flow of Divine blessing to ourselves, to our nation, and to our Land.
While our connection to G-d, and to Eretz Yisrael, are eternal, the Torah warns Avraham Avinu that Shmirat
HaBrit (guarding the Covenant by observing the laws of proper sexual behavior) is of paramount importance in
insuring that the Covenant of the Brit remains constantly active:
And I will give to thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land in which thou dost sojourn, all the land of Canaan, for
an everlasting possession, and I will be their G-d.
And G-d said to Avraham, therefore Thou shall safeguard my Brit, thou and thy seed after thee in their
generations.
This is My Brit that thou shall safeguard, between Me and you and thy seed after thee, every male among you
shall be circumcised, (Bereshit, 17:8-10.)
The meaning of Shmirat HaBrit, as the Zohar stresses, is not merely the obligation to circumcise our children, but
also to guard our sexual purity, and this is what guarantees our settlement of Eretz Yisrael. As the Torah portion
of Achrei Mot makes clear the punishment for sexual misconduct is national destruction and exile from our
Land, (Vayikra, 18:28.)
Unfortunately, the in-depth study of this subject, the foundation of Am Yisrael, has been left largely unlearned.
This is due to two factors: the long tradition of modesty surrounding the subject; and the fact that the texts which
elaborate on the importance of Shmirat HaBrit belong, in large measure, to the world of Kabbalah and to the
secrets of Torah.
In our time, the works of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov are most known for their focus on Shmirat HaBrit. However,
the vital role of Shmirat HaBrit is not only found in Hasidic literature. As we shall discover, the theme appears
again and again in the Torah, the Talmud, and in the precise, down-to-earth details of Jewish Law.
The great Torah scholar, the Gaon of Vilna, also known as the Gra, throughout his commentaries on the Zohar
and Tikunei HaZohar, also emphasizes the role of Shmirat HaBrit as the foundation of Jewish life.
For instance, the Gaon of Vilna writes that Tikun HaBrit (rectifying the Brit through penitence and proper sexual
behavior) is the ultimate purpose of man (Tikunei HaZohar, Tikun 23, Folio 76, Column 3.)
Furthermore, he states that Shmirat HaBrit is the key to understanding the secrets of Torah (Zohar, Parshat
Pikude, 248a.)
And he notes that the redemption will come speedily (Achishena) if the Jewish People merit it due to Shmirat
HaBrit (Tikunei HaZohar, Tikun 21, Folio 56, column 3.)
While Rabbi Nachman of Breslov and the Gaon of Vilna both emphasized the importance of Shmirat
HaBrit to the spiritual health of the individual Jew, and to the nation, they are only two of a long list of
Torah giants who wrote on the theme. In this small study, we have chosen to focus on the teachings of
Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, who learned the secrets of Torah through the channel of Divine Inspiration. It
is here, in the Zohar, that the importance of Shmirat HaBrit is explained in all of its sublime holiness,
magnitude, and force.
As we shall discover, sexual purity and the secrets of Torah go hand in hand.
Our Sages have repeatedly emphasized the necessity of learning the secrets of Torah at the time of Geula
(redemption.)
The holy Kabbalist, Rabbi Haim Vital, foremost student of the Arizal, emphasizes in his introduction to the Etz
HaChaim, that the prolongation of the exile, and all of its sufferings, stem from the fact that the inner secrets of
Torah have gone unlearned."
The Gaon of Vilna writes: This Geula will only come about through the learning of Torah, and the main factor of
the Geula depends on the learning of the Kabbalah, (Even HaShelma, 11:3.)
Throughout all of his writings, Rabbi Avraham Yitzhak HaKohen Kook stresses the necessity of learning the
secrets of Torah at the time of Israels redemption. He writes:
The revelation of the secrets of Torah in the last generation, in order to purify the hearts and to fill the minds with
noble thoughts whose source lies in the secrets of Torah, is an absolute necessity in the last generation to insure
the survival of Judaism, (Orot HaKodesh, Part 1, Pg. 141.)
In his book, Orot, Rabbi Kook emphasizes the great importance of sexual purity as a necessary foundation for
our revival in our land, for the Shechinah (Divine Presence) will not rest in an unholy place, (Orot HaTechiya, 35.)
In support of his assertion, Rabbi Kook quotes verbatim two passages from the Torah:
When thou goest out to encamp against thy enemies, then keep thee from every evil thing. If there be among
you any man that is not clean by reason of an impure emission of semen at night, then he shall go abroad
outside of the camp, he shall not come within the camp, (Devarim, 23:10-11.)
For the L-rd thy G-d walks in the midst of thy camp, to deliver thee, and to give up thy enemies before thee;
therefore shall thy camp be holy, that He see no unclean thing in thee and turn away from thee, (Devarim,
23:15.)
Elsewhere in Orot, (Orot HaTechiya, 57,) Rabbi Kook stresses the importance of studying the Zohar, as a
necessary harbinger of redemption:
Now, the time demands a greater acquisition of the inner Torah, with holy visions that cannot begin to be heard
except through the elevation of the soul and the uplifting of its valor in the light of its purest, transcendental life....
The book of the Zohar, that breaches new paths, forging a way in the desert, a road in the wilderness, it and all
of it bounty is prepared to open doors of redemption. Since Israel is destined to taste from the Tree of Life, which
is the book of the Zohar, they will be redeemed from the exile with mercy. (Zohar, Naso, 124b)
Secret of Brit Book - Book Introduction
One of the reasons that the Zohar is so vital to our times is because of the great light
it sheds on the Brit as the spiritual channel through which Divine blessing is channeled to the nation of Yisrael.
It is sometimes thought that when the word Brit appears in the Torah and the Tanach, it is referring to a general
covenant between G-d and the Jewish People. The Zohar, however, makes clear that almost every reference to
the Brit means guarding the sexual purity of Am Yisrael. We see this clearly with Yosef, who is called, Yosef
HaTzaddik, because he overcame the temptations of Potifars wife.
Thus, the Zohar teaches:
Behold, all of the Jewish People have a portion in the World to Come, because they safeguard the Brit on which
the world is established, as it says, If not for My Brit day and night, I would not uphold the ordinances of heaven
and earth, (Yirmayahu, 33:25.) Thus Israel, who have accepted the Brit and preserve it, have a portion in the
World to Come.
Furthermore, because of this they are called tzaddikim. We learn from this that whoever safeguards this Brit,
which upholds the world, is called tzaddik (righteous one.) We learn this from Yosef. Because he guarded the Brit
of the world, he merited to be called, Yosef the Tzaddik. And so it is that, Thy people are all tzaddikim; they
From the secrets of Torah found in the Zohar, we discover that the holiness of our sexual lives is the key to
spiritual and material blessing, both for the individual, for the Nation of Israel, and for the world.
Thus, the stories of the Torah are only her worldly garments, and whoever thinks that this worldly attire is the
Torah itself, and not something deeper, may his soul be obliterated he will have no portion in the world to come.
For this reason, David said, Open mine eyes, that I may see the wonders of Your Torah, (Tehillim, 119:18,)
meaning the things that are beneath the Torahs worldly garment. Zohar, Bamidbar 152b)
In order that the reader may more deeply comprehend the selections from the Zohar in this study, it is necessary
to present a brief and very basic explanation of the sefirot.
It is widely known that the spiritual blueprint of the world is comprised of sefirot that serve as channels of Divine
illumination. Through these ten channels of Divine blessing, the Holy One Blessed Be He manifests Himself in
this world.
In a sense, the sefirot act as filters, allowing G-ds illumination to appear in the world without overwhelming it. The
higher sefirot are called Keter, Chochmah, and Binah. The lower sefirot are Chesed, Gevurah, Tiferet, Nezach,
Hod, Yesod, and Malchut.
The Zohar rarely mentions the sefirot by name. Rather it speaks in codes. For example, Avraham Avinu is
associated with the sefirah of Chesed, Yitzhak with Gevurah, and Yaacov with Tiferet. Through the teachings of
Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai and his disciples, who were great Torah scholars in their own right, the Zohar reveals
the spiritual blueprint at work behind the narratives and commandments of the Torah.
To help us understand the system, let us imagine that the lower sefirot are aligned in the form of a funnel. The
main body of the funnel comprises the sefirot of Chesed, Gevurah, Tiferet, Nezach, and Hod. The spout of the
funnel, is the Yesod, the channel through which all of the sefirot must pass in order to appear in our manifest
world of Malchut.
From this illustration, it follows that if the spout of the funnel, the Yesod, is blocked up because of our sins, then
the Divine illumination from Above cannot pass down to our world.
In the language of the Zohar, this damage to the spout of the funnel causes the upper river to dry up. Because of
this, our world of Malchut is not watered with Divine illumination or shefa. This drying up of the shefa brings about
destruction (chorban) and exile (galut.)
Concurrently, when the channel of the Yesod is blocked up because of our transgressions, then our prayers,
Torah study, and good deeds cannot ascend to the higher spiritual worlds. Not being able to enter the spout and
properly rise up the funnel of the sefirot, our prayers and good deeds are cast away into the realm of the Other
Side, the realm of the forces of darkness and impurity outside of the funnel.
Secret of Brit Book - Chapter 1: The Spiritual Blueprint
To reach our world of Malchut, the shefa from all of the sefirot must pass through the channel of the Yesod, the
spout of the spiritual world. For this reason, the Yesod is said to encompass and include all of the other sefirot.
Thus the tikun, (rectification) of the damaged Yesod is called the Tikun Clalli, meaning the all-encompassing tikun.
To give an example, at the time of marital relations, all of the genetic information from every organ and limb of the
body has to converge in the channel of the Brit in order to reach the proper destination in the female, who
embodies the sefirah of Malchut. The codes of DNA from the brain, from the eyes, the arms, the heart, and the
legs, all gather in the Yesod as it unites with Malchut in order for the genetic transference to take place.
Thus, in the physical world, the organ of the Brit, the male sexual organ, parallels the spiritual function of the
Yesod, in its being the channel of life force through which the marital union is consummated. In the microcosm of
man, the place of the Brit serves the same function as the spout of the funnel.
Due to the parallelism of man and the spiritual worlds, it follows that if a man impairs his Brit through sexual
transgression, then his wrongdoing will also damage the parallel spiritual counterpart of the Yesod.
This understanding is based on the principle that whatever man does in this world has a direct and immediate
effect on the upper spiritual worlds. The beginning chapters of the book, Nefesh HaChaim, describe this
phenomenon fully - how our thoughts, deeds, and speech all impact the upper worlds for good and for evil.
Thus by transgressing the sexual laws of the Torah, a person damages the spiritual channel, the Yesod, that
brings Divine illumination and blessing into the world. The Zohar emphasizes time and again that sexual
wrongdoing brings tragedy and plagues on the individual and on the nation, in this world and in the world to come.
If sexual sins become rampant on a national level, this can cause a total blockage, or the drying up of the channel
of the Yesod, bringing destruction and exile to Am Yisrael (the nation of Israel.)
When the Yesod was damaged Above through Israels transgressions, it was only a matter of time before the
enemy succeeded in destroying its physical counterpart embodied in Zion and Jerusalem below.
From this, we can understand the great importance of Shmirat HaBrit. By conducting ones sexual life in holiness,
the sefirah of Yesod is preserved in its pure, functioning state, insuring that Divine blessing is constantly poured
down upon Am Yisrael and the individual Jew.
This is the inner meaning of the verse, Your sins have withheld good (tov) from you. (Yirmeyahu, 5:26) In the
language of the Zohar, tov is the Yesod. Our sins prevent the Divine illumination that comes through the Yesod
from reaching us. According to the Kabbalah, this is the prime inner cause of all of the sufferings we face.
Secret of Brit Book - Chapter 1: The Spiritual Blueprint
One further point is needed to facilitate our understanding of the Zohar. The sefirah of Malchut is the vessel that
receives all of the Divine illumination and blessing. In our world, Malchut is manifested in many different forms,
including Am Yisrael, Eretz Yisrael, Jerusalem, the Kingdom of Israel, and the Shechinah (Divine Presence.)
Malchut and Yesod are always associated together. When the Yesod is damaged, then Malchut is damaged also.
This is also why sexual transgression on a national level can cause a separation between the Yesod and Malchut
resulting, G-d forbid, in the destruction of the Jewish Kingdom, and the exile of the nation and the Shechinah
from the Land.
From this we see the importance of sexual purity in establishing and safeguarding the Kingdom of Israel.
This understanding, repeated again and again in the Zohar, is vital in addressing the challenges we are facing
today. At this critical stage of the Israels revival in Eretz Yisrael, in order to establish the Kingdom of G-d on earth
(Malchut,) we must concurrently sanctify the Yesod by purifying our sexual lives. It is not enough to build a
powerful army, beautiful cities, and flourishing settlements. The army, and the cities and settlements must all be
holy as well. If we violate the sexual prohibitions of the Torah, we damage the Brit between G-d and Avraham
Avinu, weakening our hold on the Land.
Relying on Israels inner, intrinsic holy segulah (special potential) is not enough.
This can be illustrated from a passage of the Zohar that explains how Eliahu HaNavi dealt with the deteriorating
situation in his time, when Am Yisrael abandoned G-d through idol worship, sexual transgressions, and neglecting
the mitzvah of circumcision. By so doing, they destroyed the foundation of the Jewish Kingdom, symbolized by
the destruction of the altar.
Rabbi Yehuda was often with Rabbi Shimon. Once they studied the verse, And he healed the altar of the L-rd
that was broken down, (Melachim, 1, 18:30.) What is the meaning of the expression and he healed, (instead of
saying he rebuilt?)
Behold, in the days of Eliahu, all Israel abandoned the Holy One Blessed Be He, and abandoned the lifesustaining Brit. When Eliahu came and saw that the children of Israel had forsaken the Brit and its sign, he set out
to rectify the matter to its former state. This rectified everything. This is why it is written, And he healed the altar
of the L-rd that was broken down, meaning he reestablished the holy Brit that had been abandoned.
(Zohar, Bereshit 66b)
In Kabbalistic terms, the transgressions of Am Yisrael caused a breach between the sefirot of Yesod and Malchut,
The sages of the Kabbalah have taught that the Sixth Millenium parallels the sefirah of Yesod, number six of the
lower sefirot. For this reason, Shmirat HaBrit is the test of our times. As the time of our final redemption
approaches, in order to reach the palace of Malchut, first we are tested in the raging waters of Yesod. This is the
underlying spiritual cause for the alarming increase of promiscuity and pornography in the world. The good news
is that while the problem is great, there is a tikun. Just as it worked for Eliahu HaNavi, it can also work for us
today.
A man who guards his sexual purity in this world is guarded from the torments of Gehinom (Hell) in the world to
come.
Zohar, Bereshit 8a
Rav Hamnuna the Elder said this: Do not let thy mouth cause thy flesh to sin, (Kohelet, 5:5.) A man should not
allow his mouth to utter words that may bring him to lustful thoughts, and thus cause his holy flesh, on which is
stamped the holy Brit, to sin. For whoever does this is dragged into Gehinom. The one presiding over Gehinom is
called Duma, and there are tens of thousands of angels of destruction with him. He stands at the door of
Gehinom. But all of those who have guarded the holy covenant of the Brit in this world, he is impotent to harm
them.
This passage underscores the importance of sexual purity, owing to the fact that the place of the Brit on the body
parallels the sefirah of Yesod, the spiritual channel that brings Divine goodness into the world (Malchut.)
Zohar, Bereshit 47b
And G-d blessed the seventh day and sanctified it (oto,) (Bereshit 2:3.) What did He sanctify? The same place
of the sign of the Brit (the word oto also means his sign) as in, and show me both it (oto) and His habitation,
(Shmuel 2, 15:25.) This is the place of all of the Divine illuminations. From here they go forth to the Community of
Israel and grant her delicacies and the bread of everything good. And all of the Divine illuminations that
descend from the upper worlds, they go forth from this place and this is the meaning of and sanctified it (oto,)
where oto refers to the sign of the Brit.
The following two passages explain that a mans purity or impurity not only influence his spiritual state, they also
directly influence the spiritual state of his children.
The Zohar teaches that the flood in the days of Noach came as punishment for the sin of wasting semen. This is
learned from the use of the same word, ra in describing Yehudas son Er, who was stricken by G-d for spilling
his semen in vain. This sin adds strength to the spirit of impurity and drives the Shechinah from the world.
Zohar, Bereshit 56a
And the L-rd saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and all the desire of the thoughts of his
heart was only evil all of the day, (Bereshit, 6:5.)
Rabbi Yehuda quoted the verse, For thou art not a G-d who has pleasure in wickedness, nor shall evil (ra) dwell
with Thee, (Tehillim, 5:5.)
He explained: Come and see someone who cleaves to the evil inclination and pursues it, not only does he
defile himself, but he is led to pollute himself further, as has already been stated. For the wickedness of mankind
was great (in the generation of Noach) and all kinds of evil was committed, but the measure of their guilt was not
complete until they wasted their blood (semen) upon the ground. Who are these people who corrupted their way
on the earth? We know by comparing two verses. Here, it is written, Only evil (ra) all of the day, and in another
verse, And Er, Yehudas firstborn, was evil (ra) in the sight of the L-rd, (Bereshit, 38:7.)
Said Rabbi Yosi: Isnt evil (ra) the same meaning as wickedness (resha)? No. A man is considered wicked if
raises his hand to strike his neighbor, even if he doesnt touch him, as it is written, And he said to the wicked one
(rasha), why will you strike your fellowman? He is called wicked even though the future tense of the verb
indicates that he had not yet done any physical harm.
But, evil (ra) refers only to a person who corrupts his way and pollutes himself and the earth (by spilling semen in
a sinful manner.) This lends force and added strength to the impure spirit which is called ra as it is written, only
evil (ra) all the day. This person will not be allowed to enter the celestial palace, nor gaze upon the Shechinah,
for by this sin the Shechinah is driven from the world.
How do we know this? From Yaacov. When the Shechinah departed from him, he thought that perhaps his sons
were blemished in this manner, and because of them the impure spirit had grown stronger in the world, even
blemishing the moon and diminishing its light. If you wonder how this can be the reason is that this sin pollutes
the Temple (and drives the Shechinah from the world.) If this is what caused the Shechinah to leave Yaacov, how
much more so does it apply to any man who corrupts his ways and defiles himself, thus adding strength to the
spirit of impurity. Therefore, when a man defiles himself in this manner, he is called evil (ra.)
Behold, when a man defiles himself, the Holy One, Blessed Be He does not visit him with blessing. Rather, he is
subject at all times to visitations of the spirit called ra.
Since the act of spilling semen in vain defiles both man and the earth, the spiritual blemishes it causes can only
be rectified through a great tshuva.
Zohar, Bereshit 61b
Rabbi Yitzhak was in the presence of Rabbi Shimon. He asked him: Regarding the verse, And the earth was
corrupt before
G-d, (Bereshit, 5:11,) if men transgressed, why should the earth be called corrupt?
Rabbi Shimon answered him, Because it is written, For all flesh has corrupted its way. In a similar fashion, it is
written, And the land was defiled, therefore do I punish its iniquity upon it, (Vayikra, 18:25.) If mankind sinned,
why is the earth to blame? The reason is that mankind is the essence of the earth. When they pollute their way in
the world, the earth becomes defiled. This is proven by the verse, And G-d saw the earth, and behold it was
corrupt, for all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth.
Come and see, all sins of man, and all of his acts of defilement, can be rectified through tshuva (repentance.)
But the sin of spilling ones seed on the earth, which defiles the man and casts semen onto the earth, defiles both
him and the earth. Of such a man it is written, The stain of thy iniquity is before me, (Yirmeyahu, 2:22.) It also
says, For Thou art not a G-d that hath pleasure in wickedness, nor shall evil (ra) dwell with Thee, (Tehillim, 5:5,)
except through a great tshuva. On this it is written, And Er, Yehudas firstborn, was evil (ra) in the sight of the Lrd, and the
L-rd slew him, (Bereshit 38:7.)
Rabbi Yitzhak asked, Why did the Holy One, Blessed Be He judge the world with water, and not with fire or
something else? Rabbi Shimon answered: This is a secret. Through their sin of corrupting their ways, they
prevented the upper waters and the lower waters from uniting as they should. Since in corrupting their ways
(spilling semen in vain) they did not allow male and female waters to join, thus they were punished with water, for
the transgression of wasting their water.
Furthermore, the waters were boiling and caused their skin to peel off, just as they had corrupted their ways by
spilling their hot semen - measure for measure.
As long as the Jewish People guard their sexual purity, embodied by the Brit, there is no enemy that can harm
them.
Zohar, Bereshit 66b
And I will establish My Brit with thee, (Bereshit, 17:21) that you shall be the sign of the Brit in the world. After
that, And thou shall come into the ark. For if he had not been a tzaddik (a guardian of the Brit) he could not
have entered the ark, for only the tzaddik can unite with the ark. Therefore it is written, And thou shall come into
the ark, as has been explained.
Rabbi Elazar said, As long as men remain attached to this Brit and do not loosen their hold of it (do not blemish it
with sexual sins,) there is no nation nor language in the world that can do them harm. Noach clung to Brit and
guarded it, therefore the Holy One Blessed Be He safeguarded him. But all of his contemporaries did not guard
the Brit, and because of this, the Holy One Blessed Be He removed them from the world. As has been stated, in
exactly the same way that they sinned, they were blotted out from the world.
Once again, the Zohar emphasizes that by safeguarding the holiness of the Brit, a man is protected, not only in
this world, but also in the next.
The sefirah of Yesod, associated with the organ of the Brit, is the spiritual channel connecting an individual to Gd. Through the channel of Yesod come Divine Inspiration (ruach hakodesh,) and perception of G-d. Thus a
proper Brit Milah, and guarding the laws of sexual purity, are the keys to a Jews attachment to G-d.
Bereshit 94a
Another explained the verse: And from my flesh, I shall see G-d, (Iyov, 19:26.) What is the meaning of And
from my flesh? It would be more proper to say, from my inner essence. However, my flesh is to be
understood literally (as being the place of the Brit,) as in the verse, and the holy flesh is removed from thee,
(Yirmeyahu, 11:15,) and also, and my Brit shall be in your flesh, (Bereshit, 17:13.)
For thus we have learned: Whenever a man is stamped with the holy impress of this sign, through it literally he
will attain his awareness of G-d, because the holy soul is attached to this place (in the parallel spiritual world of
the Yesod.)
But if he does not merit this, because he did not guard this sign, then of him it is written, They lose the soul of Gd, (Iyov, 4:9,) for he did not properly guard the impress of G-d. If, however, he guards it, then the Shechinah
does not part from him.
When is the Shechinah established with him? When he is married, then the sign enters into its intended
place. The holy soul is attached to this place, and everything depends on this sign. Thus it is written, And from
my flesh, I shall see G-d. This is the perfection of everything, literally from my flesh, from this very sign.
Therefore, how fortunate are the holy Jewish People who are attached to the Holy One, Blessed Be He; fortunate
are they in this world and fortunate in the world to come. Regarding them it is written: But you who cleave to the
L-rd your G-d, are alive every one of you this day, (Devarim, 4:4.)
Having relations with a gentile woman not only defiles a Jew and his offspring, it is like bowing down to a false
god.
Zohar, Bereshit 131b
Whoever cleaves to a woman of any of the gentile nations becomes defiled. The child born from such an
attachment receives a defiled spirit. It may be asked, if the child is from a Jewish father, why should he receive a
defiled spirit? Behold, at the very start, his father polluted himself when he attached himself to that impure
woman. Since the father become impure from this impure woman, all the more so, the child born from her will
receive an impure spirit. Not only this, but he transgresses the Torah, as is written, For thou shall not bow down
to another god; for the L-rd, whose Name is Zealous, is a zealous G-d (Shemot, 34:14.) He is zealous over
the holy Brit.

Avraham had his servent, Eliezer, take an oath by placing his hand under the place of Avrahams circumcision,
because of its exalted holiness.
The Zohar teaches that the Divine punishments stated in the second passage of the Shema fall upon the nation
and the Land due to Israels sexual transgressions.
Bereshit 189b
Come and see, when G-d watches over the world with the intent to judge it, and finds evildoers there, then, as is
written, He shut up the heaven, so that there shall be no rain, and the ground shall not yield her produce,
(Devarim, 11:17.) And afterward it is written, You shall quickly perish from the land, for through the sins of
mankind, heaven and earth are shut up and their natural workings are impaired.
Those who do not guard the sign of the holy Brit cause a separation between Israel and their Father in heaven,
as is written, And you turn aside and worship other gods, and bow down to them, (Ibid.) And afterward, it says,
He shut up the heaven, so that there be no rain.
For to be false to the holy Brit is considered like bowing down to another god.
From Yosef, we learn that whoever safeguards his Brit in sexual purity, it is like he observed all of the Torah.
Zohar, Bereshit 197a
Come and see, the Holy One Blessed Be He fashioned the kingdom of earth after the model of the kingdom of
heaven, one like the other, and whatever transpires on earth has first been approved above by G-d.
The holy kingdom was not a completed kingdom until it was united with the Patriarchs, since the Holy One
Blessed Be He fashioned the upper kingdom that it should be illuminated in the world by the (sefirot mystically
embodied in the) Patriarchs.
And when Yosef, the tzaddik, went down to Egypt before his family, he drew the Shechinah after him, since the
Shechinah only follows after the tzaddik (keeper of the Brit.) This is the reason that Yosef preceded the others to
Egypt, where he gathered up all the wealth of the world, as was fitting. Afterwards, the Shechinah went down to
Egypt to accompany the descent of the tribes.
And because Yosef guarded his Brit in sexual purity, he merited to be crowned with and attached to the place
fitting him (the Yesod,) and thus merited kingship both in the upper and lower kingdoms. And likewise, whoever
guards the holy Brit, it is like he observed all of holy Torah, since the Brit is equal in weight with the whole Torah.
Rabbi Abba teaches that the most exalted secret of the Torah is the secret contained in the recondite
understandings of the Brit. These secrets are only revealed to those who fear sin.
Zohar, Bereshit 236b
Rabbi Abba explained the verse: The secret of Hashem is revealed to those who fear Him, to make known to
them His Brit, (Tehillim, 25:14.) The secret of Hashem, is the most exalted secret of the Torah that G-d only
grants to those who fear sin. To those who fear sin, G-d reveals the most exalted secret of the Torah. And what is
the most exalted secret of the Torah? It is (the secret of) the sign of the holy Brit, which is called the secret of the
L-rd this is the holy Brit.
The man who lives a life of sexual purity, guarding the Brit, is the true man of valor.
Zohar, Bereshit 240b
Rabbi Abba taught: Gird thy sword upon thy thigh, O valorous one; thy glory and thy majesty, (Tehillim, 45:4.)
Is this glory and majesty, to arm oneself with weapons and use them? One who studies Torah and wages the
battles of Torah, and arms oneself in this way, this is praiseworthy, this is glory and majesty. Yet it says, Gird thy
sword.
The main point of the matter, however, is that G-d has given the sign of the holy Brit, and stamped it upon men
for them to guard it, and not blemish it it being the stamp of the King. He who blemishes it, behold, the sword
which avenges the blemish to the Brit is raised up against him, (Vayikra, 26:25,) to avenge the blemish to the
holy Brit which is impressed on him and which he impaired.
He who desires to safeguard this place should hurry and make a rectification-tikun on himself. When the evil
inclination gains strength over him, he should picture the sword that is girded on the thigh to punish anyone who
blemishes this place. This is the reason it says: Gird thy sword upon thy thigh, O valorous one. This one is
called valorous, and this is his glory and majesty.
The tzaddikim are the guardians of the Brit.
Zohar, Bereshit 247b
Fortunate are they who are called tzaddikim, for only he who guards the grade of the sign of the holy Brit is called
tzaddik. Fortunate are they in this world and in the world to come.
Sexual wrongdoings cause the Shechinah to be exiled from the world, and the prayers of mankind go
unanswered.
Zohar, Shemot 3b
There are three transgressions which drive the Shechinah away from the world, and cause it to be that
the Holy One Blessed Be He has no abode on earth, and that the cries and prayers of mankind go
unanswered.
There are three transgressions which drive the Shechinah away from the world, and cause it to be that the Holy
One Blessed Be He has no abode on earth, and that the cries and prayers of mankind go unanswered. And
these are the transgressions:
A man who has sexual relations with a woman during the period of her menstruation. There is no impurity in the
world so strong as menstrual impurity (niddah.) The impurity of niddah is the most damaging type of impurity
there is. The man is defiled and everyone who touches him is defiled with him. Everywhere they go, the
Shechinah flees from them.
In addition, this man brings terrible diseases on himself and on the child born from such a union. Because he had
contact with a woman in niddah, this impurity is transferred to him and clings to all of his body. A child born from
this is possessed with a spirit of impurity, and this impurity will accompany him his whole life, since his foundation
is built upon the most powerful and most stringent impurity that exists. For as soon as man has relations with a
niddah, her state of menstrual impurity clings to him, as is written, Her niddah impurity will be on him, (Vayikra,
15:24.)
The second category is the man who has sexual relations with a gentile woman. For he enters the holy Brit and
the sign that upholds the world into a foreign realm, as is written, For Yehuda has profaned the holiness of the Lrd whom he loved, and has taken to himself the daughter of a strange god, (Malachi, 2:11.) For we have learned
that the Holy One Blessed Be He has no zealousness, except for His zealousness over the holy Brit, for this Brit
(the Yesod) is the secret of the Sacred Name and the secret of faith. As is written, And the people began to
commit harlotry with the daughters of Moav, (Bamidbar, 25:1) then, immediately afterward, And the anger of the
L-rd was kindled against Israel.
The leaders of the Jewish People have the responsibility to make sure that the Brit is guarded properly.
The leaders of the nation who know of this, and yet do not actively protest, are the first to be punished, as is
written, Take all of the leaders of the people and hang them up before the L-rd against the sun, (Ibid, 4.)
Rabbi Abba asked, What is the meaning of against the sun, in this verse? This is referring to a transgression
against the Brit which is called sun. Referring to this, the verse speaks: For a sun and a shield is the L-rd your
G-d, (Tehillim, 84:14) A sun and a shield, this is the holy Brit. Just as the sun rises and spreads light over the
whole world, so too the holy Brit rises and spreads light over a mans body (when its sanctity is properly
guarded.) Just as a shield is used to shield a man, so too the holy Brit shields a man. Whomever safeguards its
sanctity, there is no harm in the world that can come near him, and this is the meaning of, hang them up before
the L-rd against the sun, (for their transgression against the Brit which is called sun.)
The leaders of the people are deemed responsible in every generation for this transgression, if they know of it,
yet are not zealous in stamping it out. For they are required to be zealous on G-ds behalf against this
transgression (of sexual wrongdoing,) for this is (the impairment of) the Brit.
Repentance is possible, even for the grave transgression of sexual relations with a gentile woman.
But he who enters this holiness into a foreign realm transgresses the prohibition, Thou shall have no other gods
before Methou shall not bow down to them, nor worship them; for I the L-rd thy G-d am a zealous G-d,
(Shemot, 20:3.) For it is all the same zealousness (for bowing down to a foreign god and bowing down to have
relations with a gentile woman are considered the same.) For this reason, the Shechinah flees from such a
person. Being false to the holy Brit which is stamped on a mans flesh, is like being false to the Name of G-d. For
whoever is false to the seal of the King is being false to the King himself. He has no portion in the G-d of Israel,
unless through the power of a constant (great) repentance....
Abortion is the third wrongdoing that drives the Shechinah from the world.
He who murders his child - the fetus his wife is pregnant with by bringing about its death in the womb. For this
is contrary to G-ds blueprint and His creative workings. There is a man who kills another man, but this one kills
his own child.
This act brings about three evils that the world cannot endure. These things destroy the worlds foundations, little
by little, without people knowing the cause, and G-d removes Himself from the world, bringing war, famine, and
pestilence upon mankind. These are the things brought about by abortion: the murder of ones child; the
destruction of G-ds blueprint for creation; and the Shechinah is exiled and made to wander in the world without
finding rest. Over these, the Shechinah weeps, and the world is punished with harsh judgments. Woe and sorrow
to the man who causes this - it were better for him that he had never been born.
In the merit of guarding themselves from these three sins, Israel was redeemed from the bondage of Egypt.
Zohar, Shemot 3b (cont)
It was a mark of Israels righteousness that, even though they were in exile in Egypt, they guarded themselves
from these three sins; from transgressing the laws of Niddah; from having sexual relations with gentile women;
and from abortion. In fact, they made a special effort to multiply, in open opposition to the decree that every
newborn son be cast into the river. Not a single Jew aborted a pregnancy, nor slew any child at all. It was in the
merit of these three things that Israel was liberated from the exile.
In answer to the question, why didnt the Almighty reveal Himself in all of His glory when he redeemed Israel and
the Shechinah from the Babylonian exile, like He did from Egypt, the Zohar answers:
Zohar, Shemot 7a
Behold, we have learned that it was because of their sin, for the Jews took gentile wives and caused the holy Brit
to enter into a foreign realm (profaning G-ds Name.) This is the reason that the miracles and wondrous signs
that were fitting to be performed were denied them. This was not the case in the exile in Egypt, where all of the
Jews remained true to being the Tribes of Hashem. As the pure Sons of Israel they entered Egypt, and as the
pure Sons of Israel, they departed.
Guarding the purity of sexual life is the key to possessing the Land of Israel, for in doing so, the sefirah of Yesod
is united with the sefirah of Malchut, which finds its earthy expression in the Land of Israel.
that the Holy One Blessed Be He insisted on preserving the memory of this hatred from generation to generation.
What is the reason? Because Amalek strove to uproot the sign of the Brit (Israels sexual purity) from its place.
A Jew is commanded to sanctify himself in his marital relations and not to be drawn after his lusts.
Zohar, Vayikra 49b
Rabbi Abba said, I see that the masses pay no attention to, and are ignorant of, the honor due to their Master.
It is written of Israel, I have set you apart from the nations to be mine, (Vayikra, 20:24) and it is written, You
shall sanctify yourselves and be holy, for I, the L-rd, am holy, (Ibid, 11:44.)
If they distance themselves from G-d (by following after their lusts,) where is their holiness, since their desires
turn them away from Him? About this, the verse proclaims, Be not as the horse, nor as the mule which have no
understanding, (Tehillim, 32:9.) How are men distinguished from the horse and the mule? By sanctifying
themselves, and by perfecting themselves, and by distinguishing themselves from all other beings.
Therefore, a mans marital relations should be at established times, in order that he may concentrate his desire
on cleaving to the Holy One Blessed Be He. Behold, we have emphasized that at midnight, G-d enters the
Garden of Eden to take pleasure in the tzaddikim, and then Knesset Yisrael (the Shechinah) praises Him. This is
the favorable time to cleave to Him.
At this time, the disciples who study the Torah (at midnight) join Knesset Yisrael in praising the Holy King by their
study of Torah.
All other men at this favorable time should sanctify themselves in
G-d (during their marital relations) and concentrate their desires on cleaving to the Holy One Blessed Be He.
For the Torah scholars, their marital union should be at the time when there is another (supernal) union, and this
is from one Sabbath (midnight) to the next Sabbath (midnight,) in order to concentrate their desire on cleaving to
the Holy One Blessed Be He and Knesset Yisrael. For this is a favorable time Above when all of the worlds, the
upper and the lower, are blessed.
If men distance themselves from Him and behave like beasts during their marital relations, where is their holiness
in their duty to be holy? Where are those holy souls that could have been brought down from Above? Regarding
this, King Shlomo cried out and proclaimed, Also the soul without knowledge is not good, (Mishle, 19:2.) What
knowledge does this refer to? The knowledge of the Holy One Blessed Be He (during marital relations.) When
this occurs, then the soul is not good. This is the soul that is drawn down to their offspring through their marital
relations, it is not good, for this soul is drawn down from the Sitra Achra (the realm of evil called the Other Side)
and this is not a good soul, for their hearts are not concentrated on G-d.
A man who incites himself with the evil inclination, and who does not focus his intention and the desire of his
heart on G-d, the soul which he draws down comes from the side of the evil inclination, and this soul is not good.
This is the meaning of, Also the soul without knowledge is not good.
Whoever races forward transgresses. Someone who hurries (to have relations) and ignores the favorable time,
without desiring to sanctify the act, he behaves sinfully. He acts wrongly in every aspect.
And this is the reason that evil diseases fall upon men, and bear witness against them because of their
brazenness, and reveal that G-d is repelled by them, and that He will not look on them with favor until they repent
and mend their ways and return to their original purity.
A man is called one when he sanctifies himself with his wife during marital relations.
Zohar, Vayikra 81b
And when is a man called one? When the man and his wife are together, and he sanctifies himself with an
exalted holiness, and his intention is directed toward sanctification (during their marital relations.) Behold, when
a man is engaged in marital relations, and he strives to sanctify the act in the proper fashion, then he is whole
and is called one without blemish. For this reason, a man should make his wife happy at this time, in order that
they should share the same desire and the same intention. And when they are united in this manner, then they
are completely one; one soul and one body. Their soul is one through their shared desire to cleave one to the
other. And their body is one, for as we have learned, a man who is not married is in a state of separation, and
only when male and female are united do they form one body. Thus, they are one soul and one body, and are
called one person. Then the Holy One Blessed Be He rests upon that oneness, and infuses it (the offspring of
that holy union) with a spirit of holiness. These (offspring) are the ones referred to as, sons of HaKodesh Baruch
Hu, as has been said, and thus it is written, Be holy for I, Hashem, am holy.
When a man gazes at forbidden things, he brings impurity upon himself, comparable to worshipping idols.
Zohar, Vayikra 84a
We have learned, it is forbidden for a man to gaze upon the beauty of a woman, so that he should not come to
have evil thoughts and thus be incited to something worse (the wasting of semen. See Avodah Zara, 20b.)
For this reason, when Rabbi Shimon had to walk through the town, followed by his disciples, whenever he came
to a place that beautiful women were apt to be found, he would to lower his eyes and say to his companions, Do
not turn aside! (after foreign gods.)
For whoever gazes at the beauty of a woman by day, will have sinful thoughts at night. And if these evil thoughts
overcome him, he transgresses the commandment, Thou shall not make for yourselves molten gods.
Furthermore, if he has marital relations with his wife while thinking about these evil images, the children born
from such union are called molten gods. For this reason, it is written, Do not turn astray after their gods, and,
Thou shall not make for yourselves molten gods.
A Jewish man and Jewish woman who conduct their marital relations in holiness influence the highest celestial
channels and cause Divine blessings to flow to all of the worlds.
Zohar, Devarim 266a
As they walked along, Rabbi Abba said, What is the meaning of the verse: They have forsaken Me, the fountain
of living waters, and have hewn them out cisterns, broken cisterns that can hold no water? (Yirmeyahu, 2:13)
The meaning of they have forsaken Me (oti) refers to one who has forsaken my sign, by being false to the
imprint of the holy Brit. And how does he betray it? By bringing it into a foreign domain, as is said, and took for
himself the daughter of a foreign god, (Malachi, 2:11.) These women are called broken cisterns, for all of the
gentile nations are broken cisterns.
But Israel's women are a well of living waters. This is a holy domain, of a holy faith, and it is called a flowing
well of pure, streaming waters, as is said, streams from Lebanon, (Shir HaShirim, 4:15) and, Drink waters out
of your own cistern, and running waters out of your own well, (Mishle, 5:15.) Also, it is written, A fountain of
gardens, a well of living waters, (Shir HaShirim, 4:15) But the other domain (Sitra Achra) is called, broken
cisterns than can hold no water.
Behold, the ever-flowing stream above (Yesod) waters all the Garden (Malchut) and irrigates every place, as we
have already explained, until it fills that place in the Garden which is called the well of living waters, which
nourishes all of the upper and lower worlds, as is said, And from there it was parted, (Bereshit, 2:10.)
But all the sides of the Left Side are not watered from that fountain of flowing water, because they are of the side
of the other nations, and they are called broken cisterns.
And one who is false to the holy imprint of the Brit cleaves to this side of the broken cisterns that do not hold
water, because the water does not flow into them.
While the man who merits to guard the Brit properly merits to drink of the waters of that flowing stream in the
world to come, and causes that upper well to be filled in order to send forth blessings above and below.
Fortunate is he in this world and in the world to come. About him it is written, And thou shall be like a watered
garden, and like a spring of water whose waters never fail, (Yishayahu, 58:11.)
It is our fervent prayer that through the study of these teachings from the holy Zohar, all those who drink from its
waters will experience the fulfillment of this verse, And thou shall be like a watered garden, and like a spring of
water whose waters never fail, (Ibid.)
Shmirat Habrit
contains the Divine spark of life that sustains the whole world.
The Torah warns us that Israels success and security is dependent on guarding our holiness, specifically in the
area of sexual purity.
It is important to note that all unmarried women are considered to be in a state of menstrual impurity. The
impurity of niddah (menstrual impurity) is the severest form of spiritual uncleanness. The punishment for having
relations with a woman considered niddah is karet, dying before ones time. Because of the great strength of
niddah impurity, a man does not only become impure through having sexual relations with her, but also through
intimacies like hugging and kissing.
When a man spiritually pollutes himself through the accidental emission of semen in vain, through masturbation,
by contact with a woman considered niddah, or even through a sexual fantasy alone, the Shechinah departs from
him. Holiness and impurity cannot exist in the same place.
The Midrash teaches that the Holy One Blessed Be He is slow to anger in regard to every sin, except immorality.
(Bereshit Rabbah 26)
Rabbi Simlai taught, Wherever there is immorality, indiscriminate destruction comes to the world and kills the
good with the wicked. (Ibid)
This is the reason why we are called upon to keep our camp holy, to insure that the Shechinah which guards
over Israel never leave us prey to our enemies
enjoy their beauty is also a serious Torah transgression." (Shulchan Oruch, Even HaEzer, Ch. 300, Section
100:2)
Regarding the Torah commandment, You shall not go astray after your hearts and after your eyes, (Bamidbar,
15:39) the Talmud explains: After your hearts this refers to idolatry. After your eyes this refers to sexual
immorality. (Berachot 12B)
"The eye and the heart are the two instruments of sin. The eye sees, the heart desires, and the body completes
the action." (Rashi on Bamidbar, 25:39)
Today, because of the promiscuity and immodesty that pervade modern life and Western culture, we have
become accustomed to this state of affairs, as if this is the natural way to be. However, Jewish Laws demands a
higher level of moral behavior.
Whoever gazes at a woman forbidden to him, and says to himself that there is nothing wrong with this, for he
hasnt had sexual relations with her, or even touched her, he is mistaken. Gazing at women is a serious
wrongdoing, for it brings a man to sexual transgression, as it says, You shall not go astray after your hearts and
after your eyes. (Hilchot Tshuva of the Rambam, 4:4)
The Gemara teaches: You should guard yourself from every evil thing this means a man should not gaze on
an attractive woman, even a single one, nor upon married woman, even if she is ugly. (Avodah Zora 20A.)
This is because, A man shouldnt have sexual thoughts in the day and come to seminal impurity at night.
(Avodah Zora 20B.)
See Rabbi Eliahu Leon Levi's Kabbalistic explanation of the prohibition of gazing at women.
[For thirty years, the Kabbalist elder, Rabbi Eliahu Leon Levi, in lectures, writings, prayer gatherings, and tikunim
all over Israel, has been warning of the dangers of immodesty and sexual wrongdoing. Central to his teachings is
the importance of guarding one's eyes from gazing at forbidden images, including immodestly-dressed women,
erotic magazines, movies, pornography on the Internet, and the like. In violating this Torah transgression of "not
turning astray after one's heart and one's eyes," the individual causes great damage to himself and to spiritual
worlds, polluting his soul, alienating himself from G-d, and spilling semen in vain. Excerpts from Rabbi Levi's
writings on this subject have been translated and posted in this section.]
Therefore, my holy child, please guard your holy, precious eyes and thoughts from every harmful thing, for they
are your life and length of days. For it is in this matter that it will be known if you have sanctified yourself to the Lrd, G-d of Israel. When you go out to the street, I beg you with all of the warnings of our holy Torah to be careful
and on your guard that your eyes should not wander here and there. Take great heed not to err, and not to forget
the holy words that we have written. Know and understand with a clear recognition the extent of damage that this
terrible blemish of seeing forbidden things can cause, and the great suffering that awaits those who are careless
in this. Understood?
May the L-rd watch over us and rescue us, Amen. By guarding yourself in this matter, may G-d's providence
always be upon you, granting you great blessing, and may you merit to be one of the righteous, that your prayers
always be answered, Amen, may it be the will of G-d.

Question:
Answer:
When a person is in store for a spiritual advancement, the yetzer hara (evil inclination) attacks with all of its
strength.
Sounds like marriage is in store for you and building a holy Jewish home. This is a supremely exalted attainment
that the yetzer hara tries to prevent. Regarding your dating, perhaps you have too high a standard, or perhaps,
owing to your California past, you place too much importance on physical appearances.
The most important thing in a Jewish woman is "Yirat Shamayim" - the reverence of G-d and dedication to the
Torah. If a woman has this, she will be a loyal partner, a good mother, and will have the faith and strength to deal
with the difficulties that arise in every marriage.
When a man is caught in a web of sexual desires and thoughts like you describe, it is often the result of "klipot"
(spiritual husks) that he has created through his sexual transgressions. They surround him like a cloud of bees,
tormenting him day and night. It is a sort of "ruach rah" [an evil spirit] that takes revenge on him. Below, we shall
suggest a program of action to combat these spiritual husks.
But first of all, it is important not to fall into depression and despair. These only increase the power of the yetzer
hara. Hard work and time are needed to rectify the mistakes of the past, but G-d assists those who come to
purify themselves.
Dedicate some of your Torah study time to essays on rectifying the brit [sexual drive]. Books and essays on the
subject are available in Hebrew. If you are limited to English, jewishsexuality.com is a good start. Arming
yourself with knowledge of the holiness of the brit and the severity in transgressing it gradually builds up your will
power to channel this life force in positive directions.
While every person is different in his situation and tikun (rectification), in cases like yours, the Kabbalist elder
Rabbi Eliahu Leon Levi of Bnei Barak recommends a tikun that includes the following:
1.
Rabbi Levi also advocates immersing in a mikvah as many times in the week as one can, in order to
remove the clouds of spiritual pollution caused by sexual transgressions and fantasies. In the moments
preceding his immersion, recite a confession for past errors and ask assistance from G-d in regaining
sovereignty over your actions and thoughts to purify them.
3. The daily recital of "tikunim" is a basic part of the program, in order to rectify sins of the past and to
blast away at the klipot. The tikunim are specific Psalms followed by a confession based on Kabbalistic
understandings. The Rabbi's suggested tikun, "Tikun HaYesod Yeshuat Eliahu" is printed in his books,
which can be ordered from the JewishSexuality.com bookstore at minimal cost. Also printed in the
books is a tikun against "ruach rah" which can be recited several times a day and which serves as a
shield against negative spiritual forces.
4. Careful attention to proper hand washing when awakening from sleep in order to remove the "ruach
rah" from the hands. Rabbi Levy teaches that the initial purification of hands from a vessel in the
morning, must precede entering the bathroom.
directly to left hand]. The left hand then pours water over the right hand. Then the vessel is transferred
directly to the right hand which pours water over the left. This procedure is repeated another two times.
The final 7th pouring of water should be from the left hand to the right. Then the hands are raised to the
level of the face and the blessing "al netillat yadayim" is recited. Then the hands are wiped with a clean
towel.
Afterward the person can go to the bathroom. By doing this, he removes the "ruach rah" from his hands
before going to the bathroom and thus avoids transferring it to his sexual organ when he relieves
himself.
There will be setbacks along the way, but they are a part of the cleansing process. If your will is strong, with the
help of G-d, and the tikunim, you will surely succeed. When you find yourself alone, converse freely with G-d (it
may feel awkward the first few times), and state that even though your still err again and again, your true heart's
desire is to do His will and get closer to Him.
You are not alone. Many of your friends and neighbors (even after marriage) have the exact some struggle. Don't
stop yearning for rectification, even if takes years and years.
Rectifying Anger
by the revered Kabbalist, HaRav Eliahu Leon Levi
You should know, my dear child, you have arrived into this world in order to rectify character traits that you
blemished in your previous reincarnation. And you are obliged to do this work now, as quickly as possible, before
our righteous redeemer comes may it be soon. Only in this manner will you reach the promised shore and be
united with your Creator in the bonds of love, and thus merit to be called a friend and loved one to Hashem.
It is known the attribute of anger is at the head of the ladder of character traits demanding correction. A Jew is
the pinnacle and foundation of creation, and anger is a most evil sickness that causes him to lose all of the noble
things within him.
Rectifying anger is very difficult, requiring many days and nights of strenuous and painstaking work, but all to the
good. In the majority of cases, this trait deceives you and has you believing that, Baruch Hashem, I have finally
mastered my temper, and thank G-d, I am not overly stringent with people and dont get angry anymore. On the
contrary, I control my emotions and almost resemble an angel, just like Hillel the Elder, may his name be for a
blessing.
Nevertheless, if you be tested, then at a moments notice, over some very small thing, you become angry and
pollute your soul with your fury. All of your hard work and suffering comes to naught, and everything you
accomplished is lost. In my opinion, your fall was caused by two factors. One is your pride, and the second is a
lack of simple faith, for everything that comes about is sent from the Creator of the World, both happiness and
sorrow, wisdom and ignorance, contentment and wealth, everything is from the Blessed One Holy Be He. So why
get angry? Why get uptight? Why lose your temper? Why be jealous? Why take revenge? Everything comes
about because of G-ds providence. No one can tell him what to do or how to act, for everything comes from Him,
may He and His Name be blessed, and He is pleasant and good to all.
Therefore, you should know, my child, you are far too precious to act so foolishly, for you resemble the upper
worlds. Your holy being is attached to the spiritual worlds of Atzilut, Beriah, Yetzirah, Asiyah, and composed of
nefesh, ruach, neshama, chiya, yichida. In your body is a holy soul that has been quarried from beneath the
Throne of Glory, and you are perpetually connected to the highest spiritual worlds, to our Father in Heaven.
Divine illumination and influence descends to you from those exalted regions, along with a whisp of Ruach
HaKodesh, as it says, And behold, the L-rd stood over him, to constantly grant you life, goodness, and material
blessing.
All of this goodness comes to you so that you may keep the Torah and commandments with an expanded
consciousness, with health, contentment, wealth, fruitful marital relations, saintly children, a long life filled with
the reverence of G-d. With so much goodness, what were you lacking that caused you to get angry?
Therefore, my precious child, be very careful not to get angry, for anger pollutes the soul. In its wake, a person
not only loses the connection he had with the person with whom he is angry, but he most certainly causes a
severe spiritual disconnection in damaging the channels of Divine influence, thus bringing darkness over his
nefesh, ruach, neshama, chiya, and yechida, and over all of the elevated spiritual worlds that he carries within his
body. And from this comes mental problems and serious illnesses like heart attacks, asthma, ulcers, and other
evil things, may G-d have mercy.
Thus, my dear child, please understand the degrading level that a person can be brought to by the evil trait of
anger. If you do not stop yourself from getting angry by being patient toward the person who is upsetting you, or
by reacting in some positive manner, or by thinking some good thought about him, and about saving yourself,
then in a moment of anger, you turn yourself into the lowest of the lowly creatures in this world. You cause the
Holy One Blessed Be He to flee from you, and your holy soul abandons your body, and a soul from the realm of
impurity enters in its place, polluting your being. You become vile, like a carcass, for your soul is cast away from
you, as if it had died, and everything, everything is lost.
Even if you are great in Torah learning and good deeds, and even if you are a genuine baal tshuva who
constantly works on rectifying himself by doing all sorts of tikunim, all of your efforts are lost, for your soul is
replaced by another, and you must do everything you did anew. And all of the mitzvot that you did in your life, it is
as if they never existed at all.
Daughters of Israel
By Rabbi Eliahu Leon Levi, shilta
Excerpted from the book, Mishbatzot Zahav Livusha
Dear daughter of Israel, more precious than pearls, know that you embody within yourself a reflection of the
highest spiritual worlds. Therefore, come and heed the word of G-d. Please be aware that the entire purpose of
your marriage is to fulfill the commandment, Be fruitful and multiply, to bring children into the world, in order to
raise and educate them in the path of the Torah and the commandments, and to lead them on the holy and timehonored path of spiritual elevation fostered by our holy Forefathers. It is precisely in fulfilling these precepts of
having children and educating them properly, along with other holy commandments, that you will come to great
reward in this world, and will merit the ever-multiplied reward which the Blessed One has prepared for you in the
world to come.
Therefore, you should know, holy queen, righteous one, daughter of the Blessed One Holy Be He, that an
unthinkable thing has occurred. Many young married women have postponed having children, so that they could
live a life of great personal enjoyment after their weddings, without the disturbance of children. A few years later,
when they felt that the time and circumstances were right for them to raise a family, time betrayed them. To be
more exact, the Heavenly Court decreed otherwise, preventing them from having children because of various
sexual transgressions performed with their husbands during the period they chose to remain barren, which
caused a great wasting of semen, including engaging in unnatural relations, and having relations in immodest,
brazen positions, all without shame, without reflecting for even a moment that the honor of G-d fills the world, and
that He sees all of mans doings. Therefore, these women were left barren all of their lives without the ability to
bring offspring into the world.
Additionally, there have been other couples who tried to have children after refraining for years, who did these
same mistakes, and who also ignored the commandments of the Torah, and were accordingly punished by the
Heavenly Court, may G-d have mercy, with various diseases, or damaging accidents, or who were wounded in
terrorist attacks, in such a manner that they could no longer have children. It is important to understand the
punishment that befell these women who made a conscious decision to postpone having children in order to
insure themselves greater personal pleasures and joy. One can ask, since joy in marriage is a positive thing, why
were they punished by the Heavenly Tribunal?
The answer is that these couples, and many others like them who avoid having children, decide from the start
that children will not be born from their marital relations. Thus they perform their marital relations in a spirit of
levity, lacking the proper holy intention that the marriage union deserves. In this absence of holy reverence,
semen is often carelessly spilled in vain, and this causes great anguish to the souls of the Jewish People, as
these souls fall into exile, imprisoned in the realm of spiritual impurity.
Transgressions of this nature bring about a state of exile to our emotional and physical beings, causing severe
illnesses. Through these harsh sufferings, the Heavenly Court collects its dues for the pleasures these couples
engaged in, turning their ONEG ( Hebrew word for pleasure) into NEGA (Hebrew word for plague). Only
after this painful exculpation of suffering and sickness will their fortunes be transformed for the better, in true
pleasure and blessing and joy.
Another sorrowful outcome of the decision to postpone having children is that Jewish souls are prevented from
coming to this world. This delays the coming of Mashiach and prolongs the exile, bringing upon our people even
greater tribulations than we have suffered until now. Therefore, my precious daughter, your mistaken judgment
brought you to severe transgression, which damaged all of your physical being, and darkened the ladder of
spiritual worlds that you are attached to, causing great anguish in the upper celestial realms, and causing our
Father, our King, to sit and weep over his holy daughter, more precious than gold.
All of this came about from a lack of knowledge and some foolish, unthinking behavior, in that you did not seek
the counsel of righteous rabbis and genuine Kabbalists who understand these matters, who could have helped
you to elevate your thinking to a more exalted level. In this way, you could have come to a proper course of
decision-making, and learned how to arrange the turmoil in your head and overcome confusing thoughts. In lieu
of this, you brought upon yourself a profound spiritual and moral descent, all because you failed to understand
why you have come into this world. For you have been brought into this world to improve the world, and not to
damage it. Furthermore, you forgot that there is a Law, and there is a Judge, and all of your deeds are recorded.
Thus it was your own doings that caused your fall, in that you did not seek to fathom G-ds sublime moral way.
Therefore, please, honored women and daughters of Israel, dont err and fall away from the path of the Torah,
specifically in these matters. May it be the will of our Father in Heaven that the Jewish People be fruitful and
multiply, and be blessed with good health, and that the Blessed One Holy Be He, in His great mercy, overturn the
Heavenly decree that befell these mistaken women and immediately grant them sons who will grow up to serve
Hashem, for all of the people have fallen into mistaken ways. Amen, may it be G-ds will.
The foolish individual who does not busy himself with having children, and who deceives himself with facetious
arguments, saying, What does the Rabbi want from me I dont have an apartment spacious enough for a wife,
nor a big enough salary, and other vain and selfish excuses; this wont save him at all. Let him ask his
forefathers with what hardships they brought him into the world, and yet he is healthy and living a good life. Only
a fool does not understand that it is precisely because he is procrastinating in this, and sinking in a deep slumber
by not getting married and not bringing children into the world that he is not blessed . For this reason, he is
passing his days without true joy and struggling to earn a good livelihood. People who purposefully delay from
fulfilling this mitzvah, may G-d save us from this sin, exist without Torah, wisdom, happiness, wealth, and without
a fear of Heaven. They cause their fortune to fall, and bring it about that blessings are withheld from them. They
are banished in the eyes of Heaven, and the Celestial Hosts bring accusations against them. They weaken G-ds
supernal chariots, and transgress the Torah, and bring Heavenly judgments down on themselves.
Behold, with all of Hezkiahus righteousness and saintliness, these attributes did not come to his aid at all when
he refused to marry. And concerning Nadav and Avihu, when they brought an offering before G-d and died, the
verse emphasizes, and they did not have children, implying that if they had had children, they would have been
saved. We see from the lives of these righteous individuals the great obligation to be married and to have
children. In doing so we give strength to the upper spiritual worlds, as it says, Give strength to G-d.
May Hashem be with you in being a valiant warrior in His service. May all those who take heed to my words be
blessed with saintly wives, holy marital relations, a prosperous and proper Jewish home, and with righteous
children.
My precious child of Israel, the treasure of my heart, it is my fondest wish to assist you in being loved by the
Almighty, to help you attain the true life in this world and in the world to come. May you ever rise higher in the
service of the Blessed One, and thus draw down upon yourself abundant blessing. In this way, you will bring
endless goodness to all of the worlds and to our nation, the nation of G-d, the House of Israel. By achieving this
status, you will merit to be called, "Israel, in whom I shall be lauded."
You should know, dear child, treasure of my heart, that the greatest honor bestowed upon the Blessed One is
precisely through the holy Jewish People, even more than through the angels. The angels are referred to as
"standing in place," are not tested, and automatically carry out their mission in the proper way, according to G-d's
command. The holy Nation of Israel, however, merit their exalted stature in that they must stand up to difficult
and bitter trials each day, often with great tribulations. They endure this hardship, all in the effort to safeguard our
holy Torah, to study, to teach, and to observe all of the Torah's holy laws and mitzvoth (commandments), without
straying to the right or the left.
Treasure of my heart, it is my wish that you be very careful in guarding the sanctity of your marital relations with
your spouse. As a result, the children that you will have will be outstanding in the service of G-d, for through
proper relations, accompanied by pure thoughts, the Blessed One Holy Be He will rest His light on such unions,
and grant the offspring great exalted souls. The more preparation that is put into this, the more holy righteous
souls will be brought into the world, and through their merit we shall be redeemed.
Please know and understand, my precious and beloved child, you who are trying to rise up in the service of
your Creator, when you desire to unite with your spouse, you are called upon to perform the marital act face-toface, "panim b'panim." This is with the husband on top facing down at his wife, and the wife lying on her back,
facing up at her husband. This is the proper way. However, if the union is performed, G-d forbid, in the opposite
manner, whereby the man comes upon his wife from the rear, intending to enter her buttocks, this type of
coupling is a serious wrongdoing, invalid in the eyes of G-d. The Holy One Blessed Be He will not shine His light
on this type of coupling. And even should the husband repent from this desire to enter the buttocks, and instead
desires and intends to enter the front side [into her reproductive organ], yet from the rear, he is still missing the
mark.
The reason is that according to the secrets of Torah, the entrance of the buttocks is called "Beit Peor," where all
of the most powerful and devastating forces of impurity are located, especially the klipah (husk) of impurity called
"Plonit," or "Lillit." Whenever you engage in relations from the rear (even when just passing over the anal crevace
and entering the female organ), these unholy forces are present. Without any doubt or question, the head of your
holy Yesod (the head of the male organ) will now and again come into contact with the entrance of your wife's
buttocks. In doing so, even by only brushing by it, you unwittingly bring about a union between the holy Yesod
and the massive impure klipah that we mentioned, G-d forbid. In doing this, you bring sorrow to our Father in
Heaven and to the Shechinah, fountain of our strength, who mourns over the loss of the holy souls that are
captured by these evil forces.
My brother and friend, please understand that there is no greater suffering and sorrow than this that you can
inflict on the Shechinah, the fountain of our strength, when you conduct marital relations in this wanton fashion.
Behold, dear brother, you have been warned with a stern and grave warning. Therefore, from this time forth, pay
heed not to fall prey to upside down relations like these.
Since I have been asked this question many times, about the permissibility of this act, even though we have
already discussed relations from the rear into the woman's buttocks, we are once again repeating this matter to
stress the very great severity of this wrongdoing. Heaven help us, how do people have the audacity to couple in
this manner, which is not at all suitable to our holy nation, but rather to the wicked of the other nations?
Since when is there permission for a holy Jew to engage in these types of actions? Behold, this form of coupling
is to literally couple with the impure and cursed klipah called "Plonit," and "Lillit." In doing so, with your own clear
knowledge and assent, you bestow her the souls that come from you, when these souls are intended for the
Shechinah, known as Malchut (the female organ). More so, how can it be, that these souls, your children (the
souls intertwined in a man's semen are his spiritual children), toward whom you should have utmost compassion,
instead of protecting them, you gave these children, the joy of your eyes, to the enemy of the Blessed Holy One,
you gave them over to your own sworn enemy? You gave them over to the enemy to do with them whatever she
wishes, to inflict upon them devastating and irreversible damage. In this evil union (of anal penetration) that you
performed with "Plonit," queen of the realm of evil, behold, you sacrificed your cherished children to Molech. Is
there a greater sin and transgression than this in the world? On this the Torah warns, "For every man that went
after Baal Peor, the L-rd your G-d destroyed from your midst." For according to the secrets of Torah, the anal
opening of a woman is called "Beit Peor."
Therefore, my dear child, consider well, what curse awaits in the Heavenly Court for people who, heedlessly
and without shame, conduct such relations - may the L-rd save us.
Behold, it is due to the immense holiness of the Nation of Israel that the holy Torah distances us from these
impure and unkosher relations, thoughts, and sights, and from, Heaven help us, these severe transgressions.
How stringently will a man, who is called the pinnacle of Creation, have to give an accounting for having engaged
in these practices. For these unions bring about harsh judgments in the upper and lower worlds, in that they deny
the Shechinah from receiving the spiritual bounty derived from the proper unions that nurture her, thus causing
her great sorrow. This is mirrored in the Book of Proverbs, in the verse (30:23), "And a handmaid that is heir to
her mistress" (meaning the illumination from the souls goes to the evil Plonit, and not to the Shechinah). Behold,
my friend, how careful one should be regarding these practices that have become like habit, because all of these
relations from the rear are vile, forbidden, and invalid in the eyes of the Holy One Blessed Be He.
Please note, my precious child, another further wrongdoing is when preliminary relations are conducted and
the husband and wife are facing each other, but they are flipped around and their faces are separated, in that the
husband's face is toward her groin, and her face is toward his groin. There are fools who believe that this is a
bona fide form of coupling. They even delude themselves into thinking that this is the finest form of contact, but in
actuality, they have lost their heads with their empty, upside-down thoughts and positions, which brings the
husband to gaze at his wife's sexual organ, something forbidden by the Torah, polluting his eyes with impurity.
Likewise, this causes the wife to look at his organ which embodies the Yesod.
Regarding the aforementioned act, it is written about Eve, the mother of mankind, "And when the woman saw
that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes...." (Breishit, 3:6)Afterward the Torah
emphasizes that they felt no shame. This teaches that because of these doings, a husband and wife shed their
sense of modesty, darken and lose their spiritual sensitivities, and abandon their fear of G-d.
My dear children, from this type of coupling, can these people have children? They have darkened their eyes
from perceiving their ways, and what judgment awaits them. The Torah calls people like this, "Children without
faith." I ask you, can this type of behavior be considered a marital union? My brother and friend, what is there to
say? Our holy Father is ashamed of children like these, ashamed from their wicked, improper doings which they
conduct without embarrassment. I am afraid that if they do not turn back from their ways, terrible is the fate that
awaits them.
For in doing what they do, they do not engage in a marital union at all, and holy semen is wasted without end,
and the Shechinah suffers the pain of their deeds. You should know for certainty, that in the course of time, the
greatest and most dangerous enemies of Israel, the forces of impurity of the klipot, agents of destruction, await to
ambush these people. May mercy be upon them when our Father, our King, withdraws His protection from them,
and lets them be visited by all sorts of sufferings. This, in order to return them in repentance, that they take upon
themselves to rectify their crooked ways through repairing the damage they caused the Yesod.
The way to achieve this rectification is through the daily recital of "Tikun Yesod Yeshuat Eliahu," along with
contrition over the past and the commitment to act differently in the future, starting today, by sanctifying their
relations and purifying their thoughts. In doing so, may they be forgiven, and I, for my part as a servant of G-d,
will endeavor in their behalf before the Holy One Blessed Be He to win their pardon, Amen, may it be G-d's will.
Therefore, honored women and cherished daughters of Israel, the heavy burden is upon your shoulders to make
it your daily task to proclaim that the Redemption is real and near, both a spiritual and physical salvation for our
people. With assistance from Heaven, the Jewish People will, step by step, undergo a process of inner
cleansing. Our minds will be Divinely recharged with exalted wisdom, and we will attain intellectual and emotional
freedom.
When you do all of these matters with complete faith on behalf of the L-rd of Hosts, we shall immediately leave
this oppressive exile and enter the stage of true Salvation which we have longed for so fervently.
Children in Bet El
In addition to all of this, honored sisters, always remember our young, precious and holy children. Their true care
and upbringing depends on being nursed from the bosom of Torah, to love the Torah with all of their hearts. That
is your task, to instill the love of Torah in the generation to come. Without the sound of their Torah learning, all
existence would end, because it is the Torah learning of children who have not tasted sin that sustains all of the
upper and lower worlds. Endear them to Torah and the commandments, for "They are our life and the length of
our days, and in them we will meditate day and night." For from the Torah learning of schoolchildren, great Divine
kindness is granted to the world, as it says, "Your love and compassion will always be with us." Along with
sending them to learn, you can instill a simple pure faith in their hearts by reading to them holy stories about our
holy exalted Sages. This should be enhanced by relating to them the miracles that G-d performed for us in the
past, and the miracles that He performs for us even now, every minute of the day. In this way, we will build a
blessed and upright generation that will be worthy of a true and lasting Redemption - Amen.
How much more must we be on guard, for we are the holy nation that has the Torah for its heritage which shows
us the path to holiness and modest behavior. Therefore, the more we follow its ways and live in a holy, modest
fashion, especially in regards to the women and daughters of Israel, the more we are spiritually attached to
transcendental worlds and to our Father in Heaven. When the precious women and daughters of Israel conduct
themselves even more carefully according to the teachings of our holy Torah, and according to the
recommendations that I have noted in my books, this is what will bring us to the true and desired goal. Resulting
from this, the men and sons of Israel will become more sanctified in all of their comings and goings, since the
increased modesty of the women will keep their eyes and minds sanctified in the service of G-d. In this way,
everyone will be elevated in holiness.
Behold then, holy and honored women and daughters of Israel, your labor and toil on behalf of the nation of
Israel has yielded fruit. Today, the nation of Israel stands at an exalted level, ready to rise up the ladder of
holiness and enter the stage of Final Redemption, in the merit of the holy women and daughters of Israel. For in
the merit of your great efforts in guarding the modesty and holiness of the Jewish People, our nation we will be
redeemed, just as it was in the past when you guarded the holiness of the nation during our bondage in Egypt.
Fortunate are you, precious daughters of Israel, fortunate are you. And fortunate is the nation that lives in this
fashion, fortunate is the nation that has the L-rd as its G-d.
knees, and they must never be tight-fitting, so as to highlight the shape of the body. Also, sleeves must extend
down the arm to a point not more than 10 centimeters from the palm of the hand. Also, in the name of modesty,
garments must be opaque, and not transparent, and they must not cling tightly to the body. It must also be
stressed that both young and older women should not wear t-shirts, not at home, nor in the street. Women who
do not heed these rules, and who dress in an immodest fashion, bring multitudes to sin, and the punishment is
grave.
Additionally, both young and older women are obligated to learn to use cosmetics sparingly. The excessive use of
make-up and coloring is a distasteful and repulsive practice that does not bring honor to the holy daughters and
women of Israel. Please be very careful not to overly emphasize the use of make-up, and do not try to imitate the
ways of the gentiles, G-d forbid, in this or any other matter. Remember that you are a holy Daughter of Israel,
sanctified above all other nations. The Holy One Blessed Be He has given you a transcendent Divine soul,
containing nefesh, ruach, neshama, chaya, and yechidah that sets you apart from the nations, and thus it is
forbidden to learn the ways of non-Jews and to compete with them in their doings.
It follows that it is forbidden to wear false and fancily colored fingernails over ones natural fingernails, since this
lacks modesty and even evokes revulsion. It is also best to do without nail polish. If used, bright colors should be
shunned. Rather, the polish should be almost invisible.
In summary, our Father in Heaven bequeaths you to appear, in and outside the house, in a proper and modest
fashion, fitting a holy Daughter of Israel. You should be modest in all of your comings and goings, in your dress,
in your make-up, in your speech and manner of walking, whether at home, in the streets of the city, or at festive
gatherings. If you comport yourself in this manner, befitting the holiness of Israel, then of you it is written, "Many
women have acted virtuously, but you have excelled them all," and "her worth is far above rubies," attributes of
the Woman of Valor (Proverbs 31:10).
In this manner, you will raise up the Nation of Israel in holiness, and in doing so, you will be bringing an eternal
salvation. For this, your reward will be multiplied by the L-rd, may He be blessed. Therefore, at this moment in
history, the eyes of the generation are focused on you. It is in your power to sanctify G-d's Name publicly, through
your dress and behavior. In doing this, you will be mothers to a righteous generation.
How vital this is today, at this difficult hour when many Jewish people are straying from their heritage, and there
is no one to shepherd them back, and no one to reprimand a generation that is falling toward an abyss of
darkness, G-d forbid. Rather, everyone is stuck in a deep slumber, no one looks out for his brother's welfare,
everyone acts as he or she pleases, and the Daughters of Israel parade wantonly in the streets of Israel in
brazen breaches of modesty that have not been witnessed for centuries. It has reached the point that when
criticism is aimed at them, they react with great affront, saying, "What do you mean? We are, Baruch Hashem,
the most modest women in the world!"
A portion of our women think in this erroneous fashion. Yet they have strayed far from the path of our holy
Matriarchs, and have abandoned the way of the Torah, and have caused many holy sons of Israel to succumb to
temptation and fall in their service of G-d. For in the absence of guarding ones eyes, a spiritual downfall is
certain, and a man, little by little, descends to a spiritual abyss. How much suffering must be endured in climbing
back to the path of the Torah.
For the eyes are attached to the center of wisdom, and when the brain is polluted (by seeing forbidden images),
its vitality is lost, and it lacks the strength to draw power from the wellsprings of Torah. It is as if an idol has been
inserted into the brain, causing it to atrophy, as it says in our holy Torah, "The pit was empty, containing no
water." When there is no water, then the pit is filled with snakes and scorpions. So too with the brain - when it is
empty without Torah, then scorpions and snakes reside there instead. The brain then festers with kleipot and evil
spirits which bring about his downfall, until he is lost completely, G-d forbid, unable to prevent his descent to the
depths of immorality. This being the case, there is nothing to stop thoughts of licentiousness from overcoming
him, and he is led to the snares of the purveyors of pornography, who have set up their shops in the marketplace,
causing the multitude to sin. These modern day versions of Bilaam and Balak, enemies of G-d, poison all who
come to sample their wares, for when a man pollutes his eyes and his thoughts, he draws impurity and pollution
into his brain, contaminating his intellect. This leads to pollution in the house, which was once a pure and holy
abode, but is now like a sewer, filled with the likes of filthy newspapers and journals too vile to mention.
These terrible descents have come about because we have not truly understood the holiness of the Nation of
Israel dwelling in its Land. Please understand, my sisters and daughters, that our Holy Land resembles the body,
and the Jewish People who dwell here resemble the soul of the body. When the Nation of Israel dwells in its
Land, and lives by the Torah and the commandments and the practice of doing good deeds, then a great
outpouring of blessing flows to all of the worlds, especially to the Holy Land and the holy people upon it, who are
called a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. A tiny portion of this blessing goes to the other nations of the world,
and this is the reason that the nations today are blessed with material abundance.
At this moment in history, the eyes of the generation are focused on you. It is in your power to sanctify
G-d's Name publicly, through your dress and behavior. In doing this, you will be mothers to a righteous
generation.
Also, there are those in our nation who err in their ways, because they have not anchored themselves in our holy
Torah and its great principles. Because of this, their connection to our Holy Land is weak. They go about blindly,
from one illusion to the next, falling into pits of transgression, drugs and intoxicating drinks, and all sorts of
adultery and illicit behavior, may G-d save us from them and their polluted ideas.
They carry on in this manner because they do not know G-d. This band of riffraff, who call themselves
"enlightened," endeavor every day to impose new decrees against the Nation of G-d and those who steadfastly
walk in His ways, hoping to break their faith, for instance, by waging crushing taxes on an already battered and
tired remnant. And there is no one to comfort us, because of our many sins.
Our holy Torah teaches, and this is also my humble opinion, that this sad and oppressive situation has come
upon us because we have fallen in our ways, and a general apathy grips us so that no one cries out and protests
against the glaringly frightful sight of licentiousness and immodesty on our streets. This disgrace, coupled with
looking at these things that our holy eyes should not see, and saying things that our mouths should not speak,
eating non-kosher foods, a general lack of brotherly love, and other matters, is apparent to all.
The main thing is that there is no clear guidance on how to escape from today's moral mire on the part of the
great and honored sycamores of Torah among us, because of the many divisions between them, over this matter
and that. By not lifting up on their shoulders the yoke of the teetering nation, the sweetness of Torah has been
lost on its students. Furthermore, the "enlightened" ones claim, "If a fire has broken out in the giant cedars, what
can you expect from the moss that clings to the bark?"
It is time to ask the question - in whose merit were we redeemed and liberated from bondage in Egypt? Our
Sages have already told us the answer; "In the merit of righteous women our forefathers were redeemed from
Egypt." How did this transpire? Let us look at the inner meaning of the verse, "And Egypt made the Children of
Israel serve with rigor; and they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in mortar (b'chomer) and in bricks
(b'livanim), and in all manner of bondage in the field wherein they made them serve was with rigor" (Shemot,
1:13-14).
Influenced by the crass material culture of Egypt, the Jewish men at the time sunk into a material existence
(b'chomer) whereby the pursuit of physical gratification became their constant fixation. In all of their doings, they
placed the material over the spiritual, in order to enhance their pursuit of physical, bodily pleasure. The word,
b'livanim, can be read, bli banim, meaning without children. In other words, the pursuit after physical gratification
brought them to emit holy semen in vain, in order to avoid having children, so that they would not have to exert
themselves with raising and educated them. For this would have interfered with the free time of the parents, who
longed to engage in vain past-times and superficial enjoyments like the movies and theaters of today, wasting
time in coffee shops, gorging their palettes at exotic restaurants, and vacationing at luxurious hotels. These
sensual enjoyments were their craving, so they preferred to be without children, bli banim, in order to have the
time to pursue their selfish bodily pleasures.
This hedonistic quest led to their performing their marital relations in lightheaded, perverse, and unholy fashions.
In so doing, they lost their sanctity, especially since they persisted in this evil behavior of shameless sexual
practices, in the manner of the Egyptians. Thus they fell into an abyss of sexual corruption, enslaved to their
passions, may G-d have mercy, and this is what brought about the hard and crushing servitude in Egypt under
the cruel oppression of Pharoah and his servants. Their subjugation was increased when they did not repent
from their erring ways, and did not rectify the blemishes they caused to the Brit, as it says in the Torah, "And
Yosef died, and all his brethren, and all that generation" (Shemot, 1:6). As is known, Yosef represents the sefirah
of Yesod, which is associated with sexual purity. As long as Yosef and his brothers were alive, the Jews guarded
the holiness of their sexual lives, even in the darkness of the degenerate Egyptian culture around them.
But when Yosef died, the Yesod died with him, meaning that the Jewish men fell from their holy ways. This
blemish to the Covenant (pigam habrit) was so widespread, it affected all of that generation. Thus their spirituality
died, and this brought a great spiritual darkness upon them, and thus the generation did not merit "the hidden
light" needed to bring them salvation.
It was only when Moshe Rabainu was born did the light of the promised Salvation return. For Moshe was perfect
in matters of the Yesod, and this influenced all the nation, as is written, "And she saw that he was good"
(Shemot, 1:2), for he was born circumcised and rectified in his attachment to the realm of the Yesod. When he
grew older, the Torah says that, "Moshe went out to his brothers." He went out, again and again, to his Jewish
brethren, armed with his great holiness, to gather them together and teach them the awe and fear of G-d, and the
proper ways of behavior. Thus, he awakened their dormant spirituality and, little by little, inspired them to t'shuva.
This immediately opened the gateway to Redemption, leading to their departing from Egypt, to their receiving the
Torah, and to their coming to the Holy Land.
From all this we learn that whomever blemishes the holy Yesod, and does not rectify it immediately through
various tikunim (rectifications), especially through the tikun of the holy Yesod called "Yeshuat Eliahu," and does
not return in true repentance, then this person will not, G-d forbid, merit to see the face of the Shechinah (Divine
Presence), and the treasured light of G-d will not shine on him. What was true for the Jewish People in Egypt is
also true for the Jewish People today.
Therefore, honored women and pure daughters of Israel, please, please, gird yourselves with strength for the
sake of the Shechinah, in order to bring true perfection and splendor to the Jewish People, the nation of G-d.
Please, in all of your holy doings, take care that they be in the spirit of the Torah, at home and in the streets of
our Holy Land. In doing so, we will be redeemed with a complete Redemption, as it says, "Just as in the days of
your leaving the land of Egypt, I will show you wonders." Amen. May it be G-d's will.
My brothers and friends, I have many things to say to you to help you reach a greater love of G-d, and foremost
is the need to achieve a true reverence of Heaven. The matters discussed in this essay will bring you great
blessings from G-d's treasure of love.
Therefore, my dear son, you must pay special attention to your wife and home on Friday, with added
understanding, for this is an important and holy time, more than the other weekdays since the sixth day of the
week is the "Yesod" which leads the way to Shabbat . By hallowing Friday, you sanctify the "lower Shechinah"
which is your wife. Therefore, you are called upon to speak with your wife in a calm and pleasing manner, and be
especially tolerant with her on Friday, with great understanding, and you must strive to win her affection with
loving words so that she will feel appreciated and truly feel that all of her labor is sincerely valued by you. By
relating to her in this manner your house will be filled with contentment and joy, and this will draw down a wealth
of Divine blessings on your home and family.
Stemming from this, when you engage in the marital union on the night of Shabbat , it will be crowned with all of
the blessings that are written in our holy Torah. Love and true friendship will grace your coupling, and this will
bring great contentment to our Father in Heaven, just as a father is pleased with the happiness of his children.
And this will hasten the day when love and peace will grace all of the holy Jewish Nation with the coming of our
Mashiach, may it be soon.
Holiness of Shabbat
You should also know that on Friday, beginning five hours after sunrise, there is an elevation of spiritual worlds,
and a great and holy flame shoots forth which causes all forces of spiritual impurity to flee and to descend to an
underworld cave where all of the impure and damaging spiritual agents are imprisoned until the end of Shabbat.
For this reason, Shabbat is free of all impurity and spiritual pollution, such as klipot, destructive spiritual agents
and accusers that always try to cling to a holy Jew, the pinnacle of Creation.
The opposite is the situation during the weekdays when the klipot zealously attack, accuse, and draw curses
upon a Jew in their jealousy, seducing him into transgression with all of their many strategies, especially getting
him to gaze at forbidden images, so that he will emit semen in vain and thus pollute all of his body.
"Remember the Sabbath Day"
My brothers and friends, know that HaKodesh Baruch Hu commanded us in his holy Torah, "Remember the
Sabbath day to make it holy." The meaning of this verse according to the secrets of Torah is that the faculties of
spiritual intelligence (mochin) in a man are called "holy," and that Hashem, may He be blessed, commanded us
that on the night of Shabbat, we are to sanctify the "Yesod," which is the "Brit," through the sanctity of the marital
union. This causes "mochin" which are called "holy" to descend on the "Yesod" of the husband, and then when
he unites with his wife, this brings holiness to the "lower Shechinah," which is your wife.
Therefore, it is necessary to engage in the holy marital union of the holy Shabbat night, which is a much more
important time than other nights of the week, and we are especially enjoined in this matter.
In the event that your righteous wife is tired, angry at you, or feeling ill, or upset by other things that
have created friction between you, then you must immediately make peace and placate her. Do whatever
is needed to rectify the bad feelings
In the event that your righteous wife is tired, angry at you, or feeling ill, or upset by other things that have created
friction between you, then you must immediately make peace and placate her. Do whatever is needed to rectify
the bad feelings and the mistakes that were made unintentionally. Forgive one another with a full heart, since the
Holy One Blessed Be He is not happy when in the holy houses of the Jewish People, whom He has selected
from all of the nations, the husband and wife are at odds, whether because of anger, either big or small, or
because one is too stringent with the other. This is especially important on the holy Shabbat night when Celestial
Angels accompany a man home from the synagogue and are present in the house.
For due to even the slightest feelings of resentment or anger between the husband and wife, the holy angels
become greatly offended, and this is certainly not becoming behavior for the Jewish People, the sons of kings.
Therefore, if there be contention between husband and wife, or grudges and complaints, this will cause great
sorrow and distress to the exalted guest, who is called the "Sabbath Queen."
Therefore, husband and wife must immediately mend their character traits, for anger and other negative feelings
prevent them from uniting in the holy marital act, Heaven forbid, which is a most essential thing, and the Torah
cautions us about this by saying, "And the Children of Israel shall keep the Shabbat."
According to the Kabbalah, this verse means that the Torah is exhorting us to know that a husband and wife
should conduct marital relations on the night of Shabbat . This is indicated by the initial letters contained in the
verse, " " which spell , the marital union. This means that the Torah wants us to
keep the Shabbat, specifically by engaging in marital relations on Shabbat night. It is all for naught should the
husband or wife offer all kinds of excuses why they refrained from sanctifying the Sabbath night in this manner,
even if they bring different explanations of this verse from assorted holy books - it is all a waste of time and effort.
For our holy Torah has already determined that you are commanded and obligated to conduct marital relations
on Sabbath nights. One should not take lightly something that our holy Torah commands us clearly in saying,
"And the Children of Israel shall keep the Shabbat," and the verse, "Remember the Sabbath day..." and many
other verses of the Torah.
Please note: if, and only if, your wife is in the time of her menstrual Niddah period, then certainly the marital
union is forbidden until after her ritual immersion.
Furthermore, if there be a truly genuine reason for not engaging in the marital union of Shabbat night, then it is
proper to postpone it to the following Shabbat night, for engaging in the marital union when a mutual desire and
holy intention is lacking, this causes great loss to both partners, which takes much effort to redress.
It is most unfortunate that a large portion of our holy Jewish People do not know the exalted honor and level of
holy relations on Shabbat night. This is due to the exile of our souls, and all of the sorrows and tribulations that
surround us, which prevent our minds from having the proper exalted thoughts and intentions regarding these
holy marital unions.
Because of this, the Shechinah (Divine Presence) is denied the great influx of spiritual blessing contained in
these unions, and the Shechinah is tragically left without joy. How sad it is that we lack the understanding of the
secrets of Torah, and thus do not know or appreciate the exalted influences in the upper spiritual worlds brought
about by the marital union on the night of Shabbat. Because of this lack of holy knowledge, these unions are
looked upon in a trivial, inconsequential light, G-d forbid.
My holy bothers and friends, please know in good faith, and please be cautioned, that anything that a husband or
wife does to interfere with and prevent marital relations on the holy night of Shabbat, or if they mutually agree to
refrain without a genuine reason that can convince the Heavenly Court of the justification for their refraining, this
is a great sin, which, G-d forbid, causes themselves, and their children, exile. This exile, may G-d have mercy,
can manifest itself in a wide assortment ways, including problems in the home, financial difficulties, fighting
between husband and wife, even leading to their separation, G-d forbid, or other harsh punishments that I can't
bring myself to relate. May these tribulations fall only upon our enemies, the haters of Israel, and not on the
husband or wife who unjustifiably caused the Shabbat night to pass without engaging in the holy marital union.
Notwithstanding the supreme importance of this, when there is a true and justifiable reason for refraining, such
as sickness, excessive tiredness and weakness, or if the couple are guests and they don't have private quarters,
then their refraining is considered something forced upon them against their will, and marital relations should be
postponed to the following Shabbat without further ado. In such cases, certainly the Heavenly Court will pardon
them, as it says, "I have pardoned you as you have requested."
I wish you and all of Am Yisrael that you be fruitful and multiply like mighty warriors assisted by Hashem, and that
your marriage be blessed with love and intimacy between you, shalom and joyous friendship. Amen, may it be Gd's will.
Secret of Brit Book - Chapter 3: Guarding the Brit
A person shouldnt think that he is wiser than the Torah and the great Talmudic rabbis who labored to explain the
depth and wisdom of Jewish Law. If he says, I go to the beach and the movies all the time, and nothing happens
to me, he is tragically mistaken. Gazing at attractive women, whether at the beach, the movies, in provocative
magazines, or on the street, causes more damage to the spiritual world of a Jew than eating forbidden foods such
as pork. Eating non-kosher foods pollutes the nefesh, the lower physical soul of a man. Gazing at women,
however, pollutes the neshama, the Divine soul itself. In doing so, it damages the flow of Divine blessing
emanating from the highest spiritual realms.
Jew is dependent on the degree to which he guards his eyes from looking at forbidden images. When a man
sees an immodestly dressed woman or an erotic photograph, his desire is aroused. Automatically, his spiritual
world is polluted. Automatically, a soul is released from his brain and joined with a seed of seminal fluid. If he does
not sense the spiritual shock to his being, it is because his soul has already become darkened and dulled by his
habitual mistakes.
The moment a man gazes upon a forbidden image, or at a woman whom he is not permitted to look at, a large
and frightful kleipah is created by this, along with an evil spirit, each time he looks. Resulting from this, when he
has a sexual thought, with every fantasy he violates the Torah prohibition, And you shall guard yourself from
everything evil. All the more so if, G-d forbid, this thought brings him to a sexual transgression. (Taharat
HaKodesh, Ch. 3)
Secret of Brit Book - Chapter 3: Guarding the Brit
Wasting semen is a Torah prohibition according to all authorities. Punishment is death at the Hand of Heaven.
(Niddah 13A) While in several places, the Zohar indicates that there is no tshuva for this transgression, the
meaning is that ordinary repentance, stemming from the fear of punishment, does not suffice, but that a course of
higher repentance, or tshuva mahava, stemming from a great love of G-d, is needed. (Baal HaTanya, Letter of
Tshuva, Ch. 4)
The Talmud compares masturbation with adultery: (See Niddah 13A and B)
Rabbi Eliezer said, It is written, Your hands are full of blood. (Yishayahu, 1:15) This refers to people who arouse
themselves with their hands. The words of the commandment, You shall not commit adultery, imply not with your
hand and not with your foot.
Rabbi Yochanan said: Anyone who wastes his seed is liable to the death penalty, as is written, And the thing
which he did was evil in the sight of the L-rd, and He slew him also. (Bereshit, 38:10)
Rabbi Yitzhak and Rabbi Ami said: It is as if here were a murderer, as is written, Slaughterers of children in the
valleys, under the clefts of the rocks. (Yishayahu, 57:5)
Rabbi Asi said: It is as if he were an idol worshipper.
The halacha as stated in the Kitzor Shulchan Oruch, states:
1.
It is forbidden to discharge semen in vain. This is a graver sin than any other mentioned in the Torah.
(Shulchan Oruch, Even HaEzer, 23:1) Those who practice masturbation and cause the issue of semen
in vain, not only do they commit a grave sin, but they are under a ban, concerning which it is said, Your
hands are full of blood, (Yishayahu, 1:15) and it is equivalent to killing a person. See what Rashi wrote
concerning Er and Onan in the Portion of Vayeshev (Bereshit, Ch. 37) that both Er and Onan died for
the commission of this sin. Occasionally, as a punishment for this sin, children die young, G-d forbid, or
grow up to be delinquent, while the sinner himself is reduced to poverty.
2.
One is forbidden to cause an erection, or to think about women. If a lascivious thought comes to one
spontaneously, he should divert his attention to a subject of Torah. Lewd thoughts prevail only in a mind
devoid of wisdom. A man should be extremely careful to avoid an erection. Therefore he should not
sleep on his back with his face upward, or on his belly with his face downward, but sleep on his side, in
order to avoid it. Two bachelors should not sleep together. One should not watch animals, beasts, or
fowl copulate. It is also forbidden to ride on an animal without a saddle.
3. It is forbidden to hold the membrane while urinating. If one is married and his wife is in town and she is
ritually clean, it does not matter, for since he has the possibility, he will not indulge in lustful thoughts or
become stimulated; but it is nevertheless a matter of piety to avoid it. When not for the purpose of
urinating, the above is forbidden by the law.
4. At supper, one should neither eat nor drink excessively, nor eat any foods that tend to heat the body,
such as fat meat, cheese, eggs, or garlic. Neither should one drink a beverage that tends to heat the
body, for all of these things cause the commission of this sin.
In summary, we can see from the warnings of the Torah, from the admonishments of the Talmud, from the
exacting prohibitions of Jewish Law, and from the inner understandings of the Zohar and the Kabbalah, that
Shmirat HaBrit is indeed the foundation upon which all of life is based.
It is explained in the Kabbalah that certain sins, like sexual transgressions, blemish a persons entire spiritual
blueprint, leaving an impression on the entire hierarchy of his nefesh, ruach, neshama, chaya, and yichida.
Because man is a microcosm of existence, these same transgressions simultaneously pollute all of the spiritual
worlds of asiyah, yetzirah, beriyah, and atzilut. A superficial repentance may only clean the stain on the nefesh,
but not on the ruach. A greater tshuva may cleanse the ruach, but not the neshama. So too, an initial tshuva may
erase the blemish to the world of asiyah, but not touch the stains in the upper spiritual worlds to which a person is
Tshuva from love is filled with boundless joy. It transforms all past transgressions into meritorious deeds. (Yoma
86B) If a man abandons sexual wrongdoing, not from fear of punishment, nor with the hope of receiving a reward
in Gan Eden, but solely to please Hashem, he has reached the lofty level of tshuva mahavah. In doing so, he has
succeeded in transforming his hitherto selfish lifestyle, motivated by a lust for self-gratification, into the altruistic
desire to bring good to the world.
This tshuva derives from the lofty understanding that mans highest purpose lies in pleasing his Maker. Instead of
a life of wrongdoing, the baal tshuva longs to put his life in line with G-ds will for all of Creation, out of the
recognition that G-ds will, as expressed in the Torah, is directed toward absolute goodness and truth. This is a
tshuva that is not based on anything but the love and devotion to G-d. Inspired by the radiance of G-ds
goodness, the baal tshuva determines to change all of his negative, egotistical acts into positive, transcendental
ideals. He longs solely to add goodness and holiness to the world, and in thus aligning himself to G-ds will, to
bring joy to the Shekinah which was exiled because of his sins, and the sins of his forefathers.
This exalted level of tshuva not only atones for transgressions, but the transgressions themselves become
transformed into meritorious deeds. All of the actions that brought him to this level of love, even his sins, now take
on a positive light. For it was precisely his past wrongdoings that aroused his thoughts of repentance and
motivated him to return with a burning desire to achieve this transcendent oneness with G-d.
A person should not think, how can I ever reach this lofty level? It is not so far away as it seems. For if in
contemplating his spiritual darkness, a feeling of deep chagrin fills his heart, he is already on the path of a higher
tshuva. When a`person recognizes that his faculties for spiritual perception are blocked because of the blemishes
in his soul caused by sin, the anguish he feels works like a cleansing agent, filling his heart with the burning
desire to rid himself of the barriers obstructing the flow of Divine light to his soul. This is the way to higher tshuva,
the tshuva that is worthy of atoning for any misdeeds. (Orot Hatshuva, 14:1a)
The Zohar itself promises the greatest of rewards for the penitent:
Fortunate are the penitent, for in one hour, one day, even one second, they draw closer to the Holy One Blessed
Be He than even the completely righteous who drew close to the Holy One Blessed after many years. Abraham
did not reach that high grade of completeness in days until he was old, as already was said. So too, David, as is
written, Now King David was old; he came into days. (Melachim 1, 1:1). But the baal tshuva immediately finds
entrance, and cleaves to the Holy One Blessed Be He.
Rabbi Yosi said, We have learned that the place where baale tshuva stand in the next world, even the completely
righteous do not have permission to stand, because the penitent are closer to the King than anyone else; for their
hearts strive more fervently to draw near to the King. (Zohar, Bereshit 129a)
Having seen the loftiness of tshuva, in the next chapter, we will focus on specific remedies to wash away
transgressions against the Brit.
(Kiddushin 49B, Orot HaTshuva, 2) While this is certainly true, when it comes to the constant tshuva required to
rectify sexual transgressions, there are practical steps a person must take to distance himself from the
temptations and habits that have led him astray, and to cleanse the stains caused by his sins. These concrete
formulas go hand in hand with the higher tshuva discussed in the previous chapter.
The transgression of wasting semen can come about in several fashions, and each requires repentance. While
masturbation and forbidden sexual relations are the most serious offenses, the unintentional wasting of semen
(keri) must also be redressed. If a person had an emission of semen while sleeping, though this happened
unintentionally, more often than not, it is not really accidental.
As we learned, a man is forbidden to look at sexually arousing images during the day lest he come to keri at
night. (Niddah 13A)
During the day, when a man sees an immodestly dressed woman or a provocative photo, an automatic response
is triggered, arousing the sexual urge. Usually, an emission of semen does not immediately occur because the
light of the mans soul protects him. But at night during sleep, when his soul rises to heaven, the sensual image
retained in his mind is now at the whim of unholy spiritual forces that bring about keri. Even though he does not
consciously will it, the outcome of a wet dream is the same as masturbation. Souls are brought down which are
snatched up by the Other Side. While an instance of keri can be caused by other factors, such as illness or
overeating, in his case, he can not say that he is not to blame. Had he not looked at the woman or the photo, the
wet dream would not have occurred.
Another instance of unintentional keri can come about in the sanctity of marriage. In the throes of sexual passion,
if a husband embraces his wife and has an emission before the marital act, this too requires soul-searching and
tshuva. Also, if he should have relations with his wife in an unholy manner that brings about the wasting of
semen, he must rectify the spiritual damage he caused. (See the book, Darkei Taharah, by Rabbi Mordechai
Eliahu, Pg.198) It is precisely in this regard that we are commanded, You shall be holy! A person should
sanctify himself even in that which is permitted to him. (Ibid, Pg.178. Yevamot 20A)
setback and fall. The tshuva involved in sanctifying ones life is not a onetime thing, but a challenging, lifelong
project.
The love of Torah and the fervent performance of good deeds elevate a person to a higher realm of existence.
Instead of focusing on the selfish, personal pleasure of sexual gratification, he now strives to please others, and
to please G-d by dedicating himself to His Torah. In doing so, base desires no longer hold him captive. Instead of
being driven by a quest for physical pleasure, the baal tshuva finds true joy in higher, holier spheres.
importance of Shmirat HaBrit on the eve of Yom Kippur. One of his sermons explained how the Kol Nidre prayer
was mystically structured to rectify transgressions of the Brit.
At the beginning of the Kol Nidre prayer, we recite a verse of Tehillim seven times: Light (ohr) is sown (zarua) for
the tzaddik, and gladness for the upright in heart. (Tehillim, 97:11) The word, ohr, has the same numerical value
as the word raz, meaning secret. Through the influence of raz (the secrets of Torah,) a process of sowing, zarua,
takes place, whereby the spiritual and intellectual light of the zera (the semen whose source is the brain) is sown
in the tzaddik - the Yesod. (Mtok MDvash, Commentary on the Zohar, Tikunei Zohar, Tikun 21, Folio 50a)
This means that learning the secrets of Torah replenishes the waters of the Yesod. The Kol Nidre prayer is thus a
rectification of the Yesod. Many others facets of the Day of Atonement are connected with Tikun HaBrit, including
the service of the Kohen HaGadol in the Beit HaMikdash. The very day itself, the tenth day of the month Tishrei,
is the day the Avraham Avinu performed his brit milah, making it the day for Tikun HaBrit for all generations to
come. This integral connection between Yom Kippur and Tikun HaBrit can be found in the writings of the Sfat
Emet (See his first essay on the Ten Days of Tshuva,) and in the teachings of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov (Likutei
Halachot, Yom Kippur, 1:1)
As mentioned, one of the keys to understanding the importance and necessity of Tikun HaBrit is the study of the
holy Zohar which has the cleansing power to sanctify and transform a person from within. Of course, one should
not, and cannot, dive into the secrets of Torah before he has learned how to study Mishna, Gemara, and works of
halacha, as our rabbis have warned. Rather, a person should strive to learn each discipline of Torah, each in its
proper place, time, and measure, by learning the simple and inner meanings as well. To do this properly, one
needs the inspiration and counsel of a sage versed in all aspects of Torah, including the secret understandings of
the Brit. Shmirat HaBrit and the secrets of Torah are interconnected, as the verse of Tehillim implies: The secret
of Hashem is with those who fear Him, to make known to them His Brit. (Tehillim, 25:14) This means that only
the person who delves into the secrets of Torah will come to understand that guarding the Brit is the foundation of
all moral and spiritual life. In parallel, Hashem only reveals the secrets of Torah to those who guard the Brit in
uppermost purity. In other words, the secrets of Torah are not meant to be learned as an exercise in intellectual
discovery, but rather only in concurrence with an intense course of spiritual and moral cleansing, as books like
Mesillat Yesharim and Shaare Kedusha make clear.
truth is that married men also have to be on their guard to retain a high standard of sexual purity in their marital
relations. We have seen several passages in the Zohar which emphasize the importance of sanctification during
the marital union, especially in its influence on the offspring to come. The act of marital relations is a
magnificently beautiful and holy mitzvah, strengthening the bonds of love between man and wife, and influencing
all spirituals worlds. Precisely because of its supreme holiness, married men must be careful to guard their eyes
and their thoughts with their wives, and to behave in a modest fashion, since these constitute the essence of
holiness. To insure a holy, healthy, and happy marriage, a husband must sanctify himself in what is permitted to
him, and not be like a rooster with his wife, as the Sages have taught.
In addition, married men also have to be careful not to spill semen in vain. Given the great passions surrounding
the sexual urge, the spilling of semen in vain can occur before, during, and after the marital act. For instance,
due to excessive arousal, a premature emission of semen may occur unintentionally; nevertheless the souls that
come into the world are captured by the realm of impurity and need to be rectified. Improper positions can also
bring about the wasting of semen. The marital union is a holy mitzvah and not acrobatics. Although the marital
act is permitted, and a great joy of marraige, a Jew is warned not to be licentious under the banner of the Torah.
Thus, a man must always be on guard not to let his yetzer overcome his reason and cause him to sin.
Like all mitzvot, this exalted mitzvah must be undertaken in a dual spirit of reverence toward G-d and joy in
fulfilling His commandments. When a husband and wife set out with the goal to enjoy and sanctify the marital act,
they need not fear the powerful lusts that can cause people to go astray. The Kaballah teaches that by
expressing their love in a robust, active, and joyous fashion, they bring joy to all worlds and give strength to the
Shekinah. And if a mishap should occur, they can be sure that their heartfelt tshuva of Torah, tevilla, and tefillah
(Torah, mikvah, and prayer) will rectify all wrong.
Having marital relations at the permitted times, and in the permitted fashion, is a mitzvah that brings joy to the
marriage and to all of Creation. A man is called upon to have relations with his wife, even if no offfspring can
result from the union, as when she is already pregnant, or barren, or after menopause. In all of these instances,
there is no issue of wasting semen in vain when relations are performed in the proper, holy fashion, since the
mitzvah itself affords Divine protection.
At the outset, it is vital to mention that the laws of family purity (taharat hamishpachah) are the foundation of
married life. While it is not in the scope of this book to discuss this subject in depth, these laws must be observed
in all of their detail and stringency. It is not enough to learn the many laws in the weeks preceding a persons
marriage. These laws should be studied again and again, including the laws governing the modesty of the sexual
act.
Since the sexual urge is among mans most powerful lusts, it is easy to fall into laxity and error. A man can offer a
thousand excuses, but the damage that occurs during momentary lapses must still be redressed like all other
transgressions.
As a reminder of the holiness of the marital union, and to strengthen a husband in his service of G-d, we are
listing some practical guidelines and stringencies from the books Tzaakat Yisrael and Kedushat Yisrael,
written by the holy Kabbalist, HaRav Eliahu Leon Levi, shlita, cited in the section, "Keys To A Holy Union." There
are many laws that concern the performance of marital relations. Here, we are listing a few suggested guidelines,
including stringencies that are emphasized in the Kabbalah.
The reader is urged to study all of the normative halacha in full, in all of their detail, since the wellbeing of a
marriage, and the wellbeing of ones children, depend on the holiness of the marital union. Kabbalists stress that
in the area of sexual relations, one should not be content to observe the basic laws alone, or their leniencies, but
rather each and every Jew should strive to uphold the more stringent applications of the law by sanctifying
himself even in permitted matters. At the same time, they emphasize that this holy mitzvah should be performed
with mutual happiness, enjoyment, and love.

brought down through such holy unions, at times when the wife cannot conceive, become the souls of righteous
gentiles.

1. It is a severe transgression for a husband to force himself upon his wife against her will, or when either up
them is angry, for this results in children who are aggressive and crude. Rather, relations should be with the
wifes consent, in holiness and mutual joy.
2.
It is the mans duty to please his wife, to make her feel loved, and to take the time needed to make sure that
her pleasure is complete.
3. Before marital relations, a husband should ask G-d to forgive him for all transgressions to the Brit which he
committed in the past, including brazen conduct with his wife, which gave strength to the Sitra Achra and caused
pain to the Shechinah. His intention should be that in engaging in proper and holy marital relations, the souls
which fell captive to the realm of impurity through his sins should be rectified and returned their Maker. Both
husband and wife should have the intention to bring a holy soul into the world. They should long to unite the Holy
One Blessed He and the exiled Shechinah. By guarding his eyes and his thoughts, the husband will radiate
holiness and blessing to all of the spirituals worlds that were damaged through his former wrongdoings.
4.
In preparation for the exalted holiness of the marital union, it is proper to wash ones hands from a vessel,
first pouring water over the right hand, then over the left, repeating the procedure another two times similar to
the washing of hands in the morning, but without reciting a blessing.
5.
During marital relations, the husband and wife should not think of anyone else, for in addition to damaging
spiritual worlds, this brings great harm to the children who are born from such unions.
6.
The exclusive position of the marital union is with the wife lying on her back, facing up, and the husband
lying upon her, facing down. This way of union is the select and most perfect union, which the Torah desires. This
is called, "the face to face union." Any other position is almost certain to bring about the spilling of semen in vain.
If the woman is on top of the man, this is considered brazenness (Shulchan Aruch, 240:5) and the pull of gravity
will surely cause the wasting of semen. The same is true if they are standing or sitting. Anal intercourse
is considered an act of loathsome brazenness. Besides the absolute spilling of semen in vain, this is considered
in the Kabbalah like sacrificing ones children to the idol Molech. Intercourse from the back is also brazenness,
even if the organ of the Brit is inserted into the proper place, and the pull of gravity will cause the spilling of
semen in vain from the wife, since she lies on her stomach. Furthermore, because the strongest of klipot
surround the buttocks of the woman, when the Brit passes by this impure area, it will be polluted by klipot and
these klipot will be transferred to the wifes sexual organ and to the offspring of such a union. Only in the case of
physical handicap or advanced pregnancy may this positioned be approved by a qualified rabbinic authority.
7.
Oral sex is certainly not kosher, causing the eyes to see what is forbidden to see, and causing the spilling
of semen in vain.
Rabbi Levy adds: "Please know my brother and friend that all of these unholy unions that are mentioned
above, if they are engaged in, they are not kosher in their very essence since they bring about the wasting of
semen, and this in turn creates a multiplicity of evil spiritual forces which bring sickness, tribulations, and damage
to one's livelihood, for all of the pain and sorrrow that befall the Jewish People in this world stem from unholy
unions like these, may the L-rd save and guard us from them. Make an accounting of your soul, how much you
will have to pay, and what needless sufferings come from these matters, that were done without thought, without
a reverence for G-d, and without a feeling of shame, all of which cause sorrow to our Father in Heaven, and bring
about a lessening of light and beneficence from the Shechina."
8.
9.
As a warning, the wife should continue to lie on her back after marital relation for approximately ten
minutes, and not turn on her stomach or side, and not immediately rise from the bed to go the bathroom, so that
her husbands semen should not flow out from her and cause the wasting of semen.
10.
Similarly, the husband should not withdraw from his wife immediately after relations, but rather remain
lying upon her another several minutes, and not withdraw while his organ is rigid, for this causes drops of semen
to spill out.
11.
The marital union should not be engaged in during the day. Children resulting from such unions, when the
klipot are strongest, will be afflicted with sufferings throughout most of their lives. If a man cannot control his lust,
and if there is thus a danger of spilling semen in vain, then relations may be conducted in a dark room, under
blankets or sheets.
12. It is forbidden to look at the sexual organ of a woman, and also that of a man. This damages the eyes both
physically and spiritually, and one will not be able to see the face of the Shechinah when the L-rd returns to Zion.
13.
moonlight, causes suffering in the children who are born from such unions. Rather, the marital union should be in
a dark room at night, preferably after midnight when the klipot are weakened, and the couple must cover their
bodies with a blanket or sheet out of modesty. Sabbath night after midnight is the most suitable time for a holy
union.
14. A wife should not dress or undress in the presence of her husband during the time of her menstrual
impurity, for this causes him difficult temptations, and it could lead to his having an emission of semen in vain.
15. When a woman is in her menstrual period (niddah) it is best to separate the beds of husband and wife as
much as possible, preferably 45 centimeters. Couples who take leniency with this are tempting the yetzer hara.
16. It is a very great mitzvah to engage in marital relations on Sabbath night. It is also fitting one other night
during the week, also on Rosh Chodesh, and on holidays when relations are permitted. A Torah scholar should
endeavor not to engage in marital relations during weekdays, but rather on Sabbath night after midnight. On the
night of the wifes ritual immersion, or when she hints that she would like his favor, he can engage even during
the week, preferably after midnight. It is known that marital relations on weeknights are more accessible to the
influence of klipot, therefore one should strive for added holiness.
17. After going to the bathroom, it is proper for both husband and wife to wait ten minutes before engaging in
marital relations. Otherwise impurity will be transferred to the offspring of such a union, adversely influencing
their spiritual make-up.
18. A man who regularly experiences unintentional seminal emissions, should take extra precaution in guarding
his eyes from looking at women. He should recite the full order of verses and prayers of the Bedtime Shema with
extra intention, word by word. He should sleep wearing his tallit katan, and he can even wear it during relations, if
it doesnt interfere. These things will help him to guard his eyes, and thoughts in holiness, and to cleave to the
Blessed One, so that he will not fall to harm.
[The aspiration to endow marital life with holiness is one of lifes greatest challenges. It is helpful to remember
that when a man comes to purify himself, he is aided from Above. May it be G-ds will, that He assist all of us to
sanctify our lives before Him.]
Immorality leaves a blemish on the mind. This blemish blocks the true understanding of Torah.
A person who has not reached the level of sexual purity should not drink wine, since it stirs up the blood, leading
a person to sin.
The Brit is the source of true freedom.
Before a person can receive a new revelation of Torah, he is tested in the crucible of sexual passion.
Once a man breaks his sexual desire, he can break all desires. This is why the tikun for sexual impurity is called
the Tikun Clalli, the all-encompassing tikun. The level of spiritual perception that a person can attain depends on
the degree of purity he has obtained. It is a fundamental principle that one can only comprehend the words of the
tzaddik if he first purifies himself.
A person who abuses the Brit will not be able to pray with the fervor of total devotion.
One who worries about his physical attractiveness to women will fall into the futility of vanity, and will become a
slave to the charm he feels he must project.
Depression and anxiety are the main causes of sexual immorality. The foundation of the Brit lies in joy.
Today publicity and fame go to false figures whose arrogance brings sexual immorality to the world and the
wanton waste of semen. The remedy is to honor the tzaddikim.
The more strongly you are assailed by sexual temptations, the greater tikun you bring when you fight and break
them. Holiness is released from the power of the husks. Sexual fantasies are sent to a person so that he will
transform them and elevate them to holiness.
One who breaks his sexual desires will have holy dreams.
When a person is beset with sexual desire, he must remind himself of the superiority of the spiritual world.
The spirit of Mashiach cannot tolerate sexual desire.
One who obtains sexual purity is perfectly free. His whole being becomes infused with the spirit of Sabbath. He
can go into the world and rescue others caught in the net of passion, leading them to a fear and love of G-d.
A person who experiences a nocturnal emission should recite the following ten Tehillim on the same day: 16, 32,
41, 42, 59, 77, 90, 105, 137, 150. One who recites these Tehillim on the same day need have no further fears
about the harm such an emission can cause. Any damage will certainly be repaired through this. It is a very great
tikun.
(Translations of Likutei Etzot based on the translations of Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan, from the book, Advice.)
of the earth, and this is the overall tikun for this sin. For Mashiach embodies the light of this new Chesedkindness which comes to remedy everything, as is written, And He does kindness to His anointed one,
(Tehillim, 18:51.) This is the meaning of what is written, A redeemer will come to Zion and to those of Yaacov
who return from sin, says the L-rd, (Yishayahu, 59:20.) Those who return from this sin specifically the ones
who repent from the vain emission of seed, which is referred to, Are you not children of transgression, a seed of
falsehood? (Yishayahu, 57:4.) It says in the Sefer HaKavanot of the Arizal that this verse is speaking about this
sin. It is precisely to these people that the righteous redeemer will come, because all of the remedies come about
precisely through him. When he comes and rectifies them, then the point will return and radiate within them.
This is the meaning of the words that follow (Yishayahu, 59:21,) And as for Me, this is My Brit with themMy
spirit that is upon you, and My words that I have put in your mouth. This refers to the point which exists
where the Brit of shalom is observed, and this is the source of ruach hakodesh, which, as our master of blessed
memory, explained is the meaning of, My words that I have put in your mouth. (Likutei Halachot, Orach Chaim,
Part 1, Tefillin, Ch. 2, Section, 11 and 12.)
Concluding Prayer
Our Father in heaven, may it be Thy will that in the merit of the holy Zohar, and in the merit of Rabbi Shimon Bar
Yochai, and in the merit of all the Tzaddikim and their exalted teachings, that everyone who comes to purify
himself from transgressions against the Brit will be granted Your never-ending kindness, and the strength and
Divine assistance to discover the great light and joy of Your salvation.
5. Tikunim
While the cleansing power of the Torah is vast, Torah learning, in and of itself, does not necessarily uproot the
deep stains caused by transgression to the Brit. As we learned, to rectify sexual transgressions, a focused,
pinpoint tshuva is needed.
The revered and holy Kabbalist, Rabbi Yaacov Abuchatzera, ztzal, of Morroco, grandfather of the saintly Baba
Sali, wrote in his commentary on the Torah that the frightening warnings and tribulations described in the Torah
portion, Bechukotai, have their root cause in transgressions of the Brit:
The early and later Torah authorities stated that the majority of major tribulations that men suffer, whether
pestilence, famine, or war, the majority stem from transgressions against the Brit.... Therefore, if a man comes to
serve G-d, he should first properly rectify blemishes to the Brit, and afterward begin to serve G-d. And it is all of
the transgressions against the Brit, and the evil occurrences that stem from it, that are hinted at in the
admonishments of this Torah portion. And the things that are written, But if you will not hearken to me...
(Vayikra, 26:14,) and, and if you despise My statutes... (ibid,) does not mean that they do not perform any
commandments, nor study the Torah. Rather, even though they study Torah and observe the commandments,
the principle thing is missing, because the Brit, which is the main thing, is blemished and they did not rectify it.
And since the Brit is blemished, and was not rectified, everything is considered as being nullified and nonexistent.
In order to assist the penitent in his path of rectification, masters of the Kabbalah composed special prayers
called Tikunim which have the power to erase the blemishes caused by sexual transgressions, and to rectify
the souls that fell into the realm of impurity through the spilling of semen in vain. These prayers, when recited
with heartfelt remorse, repair the damage caused to all spiritual worlds, by rectifying the sefirah of Yesod, which,
as we learned, is the all-encompassing channel of Divine illumination and blessing. These Tikunim include:
1. The Tikun HaYesod of holy Gaon, Rabbi Yosef Chaim, ztzal, also known as the Ben Eish Chai.
2. The Tikun Clalli of the holy Tzaddik, Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, ztzal.
3. The Tikun Yesod Yeshuat Eliahu of the holy Tzaddik and Kabbalist, Rabbi Eliahu Leon Levi, shlita.
4. The Kaballistic version of Pitom Haketoret, as formulated by the Ari HaKadosh.
These unique and profound Tikunim, when incorporated into a penitents daily regimen of prayer and Torah
learning, have the ability to purify the deepest recesses of the soul, and to free a person from the mistakes and
temptations of the past. The verses of the prayers, the Divine names they contain, and their Kaballistic codes act
to obliterate the klipot, or shells of impurity, created through the emission of semen in vain and other sexual
transgressions. This serves to liberate the penitent from the invisible, destructive influences which these negative
spiritual forces have on his life. In awakening hitherto dormant powers of holiness, these tikunim also strengthen
the penitent to overcome the temptations and challenges of the future. In addition, they serve as a lifeline,
providing an important sense of security. For, if a person should weaken in the battle against the evil inclination
and fall back to erring ways, he knows he has a ladder with which he can climb back up out of the imprisoning
clutches of sexual sin. The prolific author and lecturer, Rabbi Yisrael Hess, ztzal, counseled thousands of young
people throughout Israel, most notably at Bar Ilan University where he taught for many years. In an essay on
Shmirat HaBrit, he emphasizes the importance of relying on the secrets of Kaballah to purify a person from the
pollution and darkness of spilling semen in vain:
The sin of spilling semen in vain is, at the same time, a transgression like all Torah transgressions, and yet much
more severe in its devastating influence, in that it causes deep and high reaching damage, far greater than other
prohibitions of the Torah. Because of this duality, we cannot understand the magnitude of this transgression and
its powerful influences according to standard explanations. Rather, our understanding must come from the inner
explanations of the Torah, from the spiritual realm that extends beyond our ordinary physical orientation. This
understanding derives from powers that are beyond human intellectual reasoning, which are found in the world of
Kaballah.Within the physical drop of semen emitted from our material bodies is to be found a Divine creative
power hidden from our eyes, beyond our conceptual understanding, beyond our ability to create it ourselves.
When we recognize this wonder, it becomes clear that the rectification of any blemish to this Divine essence
cannot be among the ordinary paths of correction that we are familiar with. We cannot even understand how or
why a particular tikun works to rectify the transgression, or how some particular advice can make whole what
was blemished and erase the damages incurred.
With the help of G-d, when we merit to increase our learning and knowledge, when we fill ourselves with Torah
and faith, with the fear of G-d, and with greater purity, then we will merit to fathom what is hidden from us now...
Until then, our desire to emerge from our quandary and to improve ourselves, brings us to proceed forward with
the willingness to bow our heads and submit to the giants of the inner workings of the soul, the masters of
Kaballah. In doing this, may there be a balancing atonement a sin that we committed wantonly, without thinking
about its consequences will be rectified through tikunim that are beyond our thinking processes and intellectual
grasp. (Essay on Shmirat HaBrit, in the book, VHayitem Kidoshim, Pgs.150-151.)
is a remedy for this. However, since many people are sensitive to cold water, this should only be done when it will
not impinge on a persons health. Immersion in a warm mikvah is effective as well.
In the case of spilling semen in vain, whether willfully or inadvertently, a person should shower thoroughly and
immerse in a mikvah as soon as one can. Rabbi Eliahu Leon Levi, shlita, advises that a person should immerse
his whole head and body in the water three times in succession, then confess his wrongdoings, make a
commitment not to continue in his errant ways, and then immerse another seven times in succession. It is also
proper to have in mind that while ones body is completely immersed in the purifying waters of the mikvah, his
soul root is concurrently being immersed in the purifying waters of Gan Eden above.
Because it is also forbidden to look at a mans sexual organ, a person should behave with modesty in a mikvah.
He should wrap himself in a towel to and from the immersion pool, and he should guard his eyes from looking at
other men. It is best not to talk in a mikvah, and not to linger unnecessarily. Also, as in the case of all other
tikunim, one should be especially happy after immersing in a mikvah, knowing that G-d is surely pleased with his
efforts. But one should guard against feelings of pride, since the poison of pride can nullify all of the positive
effects of tshuva.
If a person immerses after a keri, HaRav Levi further advises a half-day fast and the heartfelt reciting of the
Tikun HaYesod, Yeshuat Eliahu.
Tikun Hatzot brings about the Yichud-union of HaKodesh Baruch Hu and the exiled Shechinah, and effects great
rectifications in all of the worlds. In the same way that sexual transgressions brought about the destruction of the
Temple and Jerusalem, separating the exalted spiritual union of the sefirot of Malchut and Yesod, so do our
sexual sins today extend this spiritual damage and lengthen the exile. As it says in Tikun Hatzot, Our sins have
withheld the good (Yesod) from us. (Yirmeyahu, 5:25) Tikun Hatzot comes to reawaken the love and flow of
blessing that was lost. Thus its heartfelt recital, a few times a week, or as much as one can, is a vital aspect of
Tikun HaBrit. Those who are able to keep awake to learn Torah afterward will be rewarded with an exalted
spiritual light.

Rabbi Eliahu Leon Levi on Tikun Hatzot
What are Tikunim?
On Tikun Hatzot
by the revered Kabbalist, HaRav Eliyahu Leon Levi
Getting up at midnight is essential for every Jew, to weep and lament over the destruction of the Temple, and to
afterward recite the praises of the Jewish People who are afflicted with great tribulation. My cherished friend, you
should know that all of the sorrows that our holy Jewish People suffer in the violent and bitter exile, indescribable
horrors and grave sicknesses that strike with a frightening constancy, and especially the carnage and murder of
our time, all of this stems from the fact that we dont feel in our hearts the need to rise at midnight to participate in
the anguish of the Shechinah.
Alas at the shame and reproach when a mother is suffering and gravely ill, and her son sleeps peacefully in his
bed, luxuriating in a deep slumber, not at all concerned with his mothers plight. The behavior of a son like this
towards his mother borders on a grave transgression, seeing that she slaved and sacrificed herself days and
nights for his sake, in caring for all of his needs, and what is her reward? Close to nothing!
No, my dear friend, it is the Shechinah that upheld us and toiled over us unceasingly day after day, night after
night without respite, and you, her son, are obligated to honor her and to participate in her tribulation over the
destruction of her Temple, over the diminishing of her Heavenly unifications, over the sufferings of her children
which come upon them from all sides, over the evil forces that sap her strength, and over the evil decrees that fall
upon her children each day and month and all of this is due to our many sins.
And you, my son and friend, a servant of G-d, lay comfortable in your bed, bundled in your blanket, in a sea of
bliss, first lounging on this side, and then on the other, for another minute, another hour more, without giving up
on your comfort. In so doing so, you have without thinking become a partner of the Destroyer. You have fallen into
the web of the evil inclination, the Satan, who causes you to sin and who brings death in his wake, to remove you
from this world as soon as he can, so that he might cast you forth into the suffering of the next world where you
will have to give an account of why you wasted your precious time in this world for nothing - for the vain and
illusionary comforts of sleep, instead of having paid attention to the most important thing of all, to return to the
love and service of G-d, For these are our life and the length of our days, and in them we will contemplate day
and night.
Had you understood this, you should have torn your heart in twelve places, and cried out and wept with all of your
strength to your Father in Heaven, that He have compassion on our life-giving Shechinah, and on the Jewish
People who are drowning and anguishing in every type of tribulation, evil decrees, and sicknesses. You should
have cried out in tears that Hashem be zealous for all of His people, and for His land, and immediately rebuild the
Temple in Jerusalem, the palace of the Shechinah, that He redeem us with a total and true redemption.
This is what a loving son should do, and if, G-d forbid, he does not do this, knowing that all that we have written is
true, then the pleasure that this world of vanity brings him will be transformed, G-d forbid, into a plague, and he
will have to make an accounting fore this when in some future time he will lay on his bed in sickness and terrible
sufferings, may Hashem have mercy, until he will have paid for all of the pleasures that he enjoyed for himself in
his transitory life, when he slept comfortably in his bed and did not take to heart the anguish and pain of the
Shekinah.
Thus, a son who honors his Father in Heaven will get up at midnight and recite the Tikun Hatzot. If he can learn
Torah afterwards, how well and good. If it is difficult for him to rise at midnight, at least let him rise some time
during the night, wash his hands in the proper fashion, say all of the morning blessings, and afterwards recite the
Tikun Hatzot with tears. For everyone who rises at midnight to say the Tikun, a thread of G-ds kindness will be
drawn over them, and their doings will be recorded in the Kings book of remembrance for goodness, for blessing,
and for salvation, may it come soon.

Tikun Hatzot
Tikunim
My brothers and friends, the holy nation of Israel, take heed and revitalize your lives. I implore you, please, from
the day that you read this essay, please cease your incorrect eating habits that you have followed for a long time
and that have become second nature, because you did not understand their detrimental consequences.
Every day, you have been preparing all kinds of meals that you relished, and afterwards you became inflicted
with all sorts of ailments, may G-d have mercy. Therefore, from now on, please learn and consistently practice
the proper and healthy dietary habits that we will set down in this essay. In doing so, your health and physical
fitness will improve. Be strong and valiant, people of the L-rd, blessed be He.
I. A Good Night's Sleep
To begin, I want to alert you that you need to go to sleep earlier than you are
accustomed. No later than 11PM in the summer, and 10PM in the winter. You should sleep until approximately
6AM, all year round. These hours of sleep will give your body the strength and fortification to perform the needed
tasks for the morrow. It is possible to sleep more than this, but this is called being spoiled, except for women who
may sleep an additional two hours or more since their sleep is often interrupted to take care of the children.
Please know, my brothers and friends, that it is proper and beneficial that your sleep be more peaceful, without
worrying over any problems or matters that have not yet found a solution, because this can disturb your peace of
mind and damage your health. Therefore, you should be more easy-going in your expectations at home and at
work, and adopt from this time forth a positive attitude that unresolved problems will find the best possible
solution, out of the graciousness of the L-rd who longs to do kindness to His children, as it says, "Israel is my
firstborn child."
Try to sleep in a better, more relaxed frame of mind, trusting that everything will work out. With this ease of mind,
you will wake up in the morning refreshed, your mind as clear as wine. And in truth, the following day, most of the
problems will be solved, with the help of our Father, our King, the One and only G-d.
To insure good sleep, it is recommended to sleep dressed in a roomy, comfortable garment, and not a tight-fitting
garment that can cause troubles like blocking proper blood circulation.
It is also beneficial to sleep in a very dark room, since this relaxes the eyes and the intellectual faculties
(mochin). However, one should not sleep in a completely darkened house. Rather, a light in the hallway or other
location should be left on. An additional reminder is not to forget the love of G-d by accepting the yoke of the
Kingdom of Heaven in the recital of the Bedtime Shema. It is beneficial to do so with tears, for this atones in a
large measure for any unintentional transgressions that a person committed during the day.
Also, in the summer, if you sleep with an air-conditioner, it is best to keep a window open an inch or two in order
to recycle the air. In the winter, it is best that the bedroom window be sealed, since strong winter winds enter the
house from cracks and crannies, and this recycles the air by itself. This will provide for a refreshing sleep, so that
you will wake up without any feelings of nervousness or anger, and your day will flow like a peaceful stream to
irrigate the fields and vineyards that you plant in all of your doings.
In the event that you find it hard to sleep, it is recommended that women read from the book, "Mishbatzot Zahav
Levushah." By reading a few pages you will fall into a deep and healthy sleep. It is recommended that men read
from the books "Tzaakat Yisrael" and "Kedushat Yisrael." By reading a few pages, you will fall into a calm and
refreshing sleep.
II. Washing Hands In The Morning
Upon awakening in the morning, one must immediately wash one's hands from a
vessel, pouring water over the right hand, then the left, and repeating this another two times. This should be
done in the kitchen sink, or if there is a sink in the hall, first removing dishes and the like. And allow me to warn
you never to do this hand washing in the shower or bathroom, especially upon awakening in the morning when
an impure spirit rests on the fingers, because the bathroom and shower are filled with klipot (impure spiritual
husks) and evil spirits. These are places of impurity, and it is a waste of time to argue about this, because it is as
clear as the sun in the afternoon, and something that even a simpleton can understand. Then, after relieving
oneself, one must wash his hands again from a vessel. This is followed by the recital of all of the morning
blessings.
III. Women's Hygiene
Here is good advice to insure a woman's health. Immediately after saying the morning blessings, it is a wise
practice to take a hot shower, and afterward, to change underwear, since during the night, klipot nurture
themselves from the body of a woman. This is the reason that already in the morning, when she rises from sleep,
she is very tired, and has very uncomfortable feelings, without knowing from where this fatigue and inner
pressure derive. Therefore, it is sound advice to make it a daily morning habit to shower and change
undergarments, and to do so earnestly, without laziness, and not to miss a day.
Even if she wakes up feeling irritated and angry... if she is faithful to this routine, she will be calm
throughout the day.
This routine is sure to improve and uplift her day and its successes, so much so that by doing this each morning,
she will come to feel that a new and pure soul has entered her body. This is a formula for robust health and good
feelings. And even if she wakes up feeling irritated and angry, or if she suffers from persistent headaches, etc, if
she is faithful to this routine, she will be calm throughout the day.
It should be noted that if she showers and changes her undergarments at night, for whatever reason, this does
not in any way substitute for showering and changing underwear in the morning - there are too many proofs for
this to list them all here. After showering and changing, hands must be washed in the proper manner, and it is a
good thing to drink a cup of hot tea with naana (mint) and a little babonag (camomile), with a piece of lemon.
After drinking this cup of tea, with the help of G-d, she will be serene, contended, and clear thinking all day.
IV. Morning Shower And Mikvah For Men
Likewise, it is sound practice for a man, that after reciting all of the morning blessings, he take a hot shower. If he
had relations with his wife during the night, it is proper to go to the nearby mikvah, shower with soap, then
immerse. After finishing his morning prayers, he should recite various tikunim, especially "Tikun Yesod Yeshuat
Eliahu." This is the pathway to holiness, and in doing so his soul will shine all the day. All those who heed these
words of advice will be rewarded with great joy and a loving attachment to the Holy One Blessed Be He; amen.
V. Proper Daily Nutritional Habits
a. Recommended Breakfast And Dinner
1. Salad
Preparation and Ingredients:
One tomato, one cucumber, half an onion, four cusbara [coriander] leaves, four parsley leaves, four lettuce
leaves, three minced garlic cloves. All ingredients should be chopped into small pieces and placed together into a
large bowl. Add a teaspoon of Yemenite "schug" (hot spices), a teaspoon of approximately 30% tomato paste,
two teaspoons of minced za'atar seasoning, two teaspoons of olive oil, half a squeezed lemon, one quarter
teaspoon of ground cumin, a sprinkle of black pepper, a sprinkle of red pepper, and salt according to personal
taste. Mix everything and the salad is ready. Eating a salad like this will renew the circulation of blood, awaken
the body, and lessen the sugar level.
(Needless to say all vegetables must be properly washed and examined for insects before using.)
2. Recommended Supplements
On a side dish, put two teaspoons of 5% whipped white cheese (similar to sour cream), one serving of yogurt,
one sour pickle, seven or eight olives, two avocado slices measuring 6 cm, half a hard-boiled egg without the
yoke, two small radishes.
The beverage is limited to water from the faucet that has been chilled in the refrigerator, with a small addition of
soda water, and a squeeze of lemon juice. The recommended bread for all meals is a French baguette, long, well
baked, and almost empty of dough inside. It is a good idea to store eight or ten baguettes in the freezer for future
meals. One should eat about eighteen centimeters of the baguette at each meal. It should be noted that not
every baguette is a French baguette. Therefore one should search and find the appropriate bakery or store. This
is because other types of baguettes are filled with dough and not baked sufficiently, causing damage. But be sure
when buying the French baguette that is has a trustworthy kosher certificate.
At the end of the meal, it is recommended to drink a cup of Turkish coffee with milk. (It is important to purchase
the coffee in the open market, or in a spice store, so that you can watch them grind it. Otherwise, the coffee can
cause damage, since in the majority of cases it is mixed with various other ingredients that I cannot specify here.)
The cup of coffee is best prepared in the following manner: use one and a half teaspoons of Turkish coffee, one
teaspoon of sugar or one sweetener, with the rest boiling water, and a little milk to soften the sharpness. Mix well.
This drink will wake you up, and help you to be vibrant, robust, and alert the whole day.
A note regarding dinner. The evening meal should be eaten no later than 9PM. If you happen to be at an evening
celebration, and have eaten fatty foods such as fish and meat and an assortment of exotic side dishes, on
leaving the celebration, you should take a good walk of at least five hundred meters in order to help digest the
food. Afterward, you can return home for a restful sleep.
b. Recommended Lunch
1. Soup
For lunch, it is recommended to have a variety of soups, but be sure they are without fats. Preferable choices
are: white bean soup, rice soup, pea soup, vegetable soup, and others. To prepare the soup, follow these
suggested instructions for vegetable soup - take a blend of vegetables, for instance, two carrots, two potatoes,
two zucchinis, a little celery, a little pumpkin, two onions, two tomatoes, two red bell peppers, and five peeled
garlic cloves. After washing, peeling, and cutting, place this mixture in a pot with selected spices, and salt
according to taste. Also, fry two medium size onions that have been chopped into tiny pieces, drain off the oil,
and add to the soup. Add three teaspoons of chicken soup powder (parve or meat) made by the Osem or Vita
companies. Also add two teaspoons of oil to the soup and cook for an hour and fifteen minutes.
Eating these soups when they are hot will help greatly in improving the health of people who are rundown and
weak, or sick with an assortment of illnesses like throat and lung infections, or G-d forbid, asthma, and intestinal
and kidney disease.
By making it a regular practice to cook and eat natural foods like this, you will be on the path to restoring
your health gradually to its former strength.
By making it a regular practice to cook and eat natural foods like this, you will be on the path to restoring your
health gradually to its former strength. For this improvement to happen, from the time you begin to eat in a
healthier manner, you must not drink any carbonated beverages, fruit juices, nor beer, especially when they are
cold, and it is best not to drink them at all. In following the path of nutrition that we have set forth, you will, little by
little, with the help of the Blessed One, achieve lasting health; amen, may it be G-d's will.
2. Recommended Lunch Supplements
Meat Dishes
It is advisable to buy glatt beef or hamburger meat with a reliable and recognized kashrut certificate. Generally, it
is beneficial to grind the meat and flavor it with a variety of spices. For instance, the dish will be enhanced by
adding a little finely cut parsley, cusbara [coriander], and onion, with six cloves of minced garlic. Add to this two
teaspoons of za'atar, a teaspoon of cumin, a little black pepper, and some soup spices, and salt according to
taste. Add two teaspoons of oil to the mixture and stir everything together. It is proper to do this with one's hands
and to make meatballs or patties out of the mixture.

Cooking Instructions
These meat patties can be cooked in the following three ways:
They may be cooked in the soup that was prepared for lunch.
They may be cooked in the oven after seeping them in sauce by blending six medium-size tomatoes
with a little black pepper, some spices of your choice, and two teaspoons of oil. After seeping the
meatballs in this sauce on a cooking dish, place in the oven for fifteen minutes, then turn the balls over
and continue cooking for another twenty minutes, and turn the balls over again to insure that the sauce
is absorbed. Final cooking time according to individual taste. A meat dish prepared in this fashion is
very nourishing and fortifying. Fortunate are those who eat it.
Grill the meatballs in a barbecue fired by coals. Why coals? Because coals have a special property to
draw away all the poisons in meat and to burn them. Therefore all meat that is barbecued over coals is
healthier to eat than other methods of cooking, providing more strength to the body. It is important that
at the time of the cooking that the coals be searing and not flaming. It is also best to eat the meat when
it is grilled medium and not when it is over-cooked, when it no longer has nutritious value.
For the reasons stated above, it is good to occasionally eat chicken schnitzels, spiced according to personal
choice, and grill over a barbecue as described. It is also fitting to alter the main dish from time to time, and eat
fish instead of meat. Fish from the sea are preferable. They should generally be cooked in the oven in the
manner of "charameh." To best know how to cook them, one should ask cooks who specialize in Morrocan,
Tunisian, and Tripolian cuisine. However, one should be careful to considerably reduce their hot spiciness.
Otherwise their sharpness can cause nervous tension, and sometimes even hemorrhoids.
These are guaranteed nourishing, healthy dishes for the entire family, and especially for men who are required to
perform more physical exertion.
Tikun Now!
(Excerpted from his book, "Tza'akat Yisrael")
Dear and Holy Jewish People:
In these difficult times when we find ourselves in a raging conflagration, the time has come to cry out to our
Father in Heaven to ask that He bestow great mercy upon us, and upon all of the Nation of Israel, and grant us
an everlasting salvation.
This is most particularly the case in our Holy Land, that no part or parcel of our Holy Land be given over to
foreign peoples who rise up each morning to attack and draw blood from our dear brethren, the blessed Nation of
G-d. They come with great cruelty, with no compassion toward the Jewish People, a people who has suffered so
much terrible hardship.
A Torah Educator
Additionally, every educator who desires to take up religious instruction must first "be a man," acquiring all of the
proper character traits before he takes the title of Rabbi or Tzaddik. His heart must be filled with a love of G-d
and Israel, with a willingness to listen patiently to every Jew who seeks help and advice, and with a special
concern to guide our nation's youth in the proper path.
3. He should try to read 13 pages of Zohar to polish the light of his soul. Even if he does not understand
the meaning of the text, his reward from G-d will be abundant.
4. He should also learn six new explanations of the Torah portion commentaries, so that when his
additional soul rises back to Heaven on Motzei Shabbat, all of his Sabbath learning with be crowned with an
exalted holiness from G-d.
5. He should strive to learn four chapters of Mussar on proper ethical behavior to strengthen his service
of G-d and his reverence for G-d's exalted transcendence, with an emphasis on attaining true humility.
6. He should also try to learn two pages of Gemara with a study partner or Torah scholar in order to
sharpen the pure intelligence that is his inheritance. In studying the Talmudic argument, he will purify his mind in
the service of G-d and renew his thought processes on their proper wavelength.
He should devote his remaining free time to sit with his children and go over their weekly learning, to spend time
with his wife and his Sabbath guests, and encourage them in striving for greater holiness in their love of G-d.
During the summer, one should enjoy a two-and-a-half-hour nap on the Sabbath in order to give his mind the rest
it needs.

Guarding One's Eyes
And how vociferously the holy Prophets cried out in order to turn the people back to the good, but all for naught.
No one listened - neither to the Torah, nor to the holy Sages, the Tzaddikim of the generation. Therefore, the
Holy One, Blessed be He, didn't listen to them, as is written, "He who shuts his ear to the teaching of Torah, his
prayers are considered an abomination."
Just before the destruction of both Temples, there were clans of hooligans, poor in moral character and good
deeds, who had the audacity to call themselves prophets or rabbis, as the verse says, "Thy prophets have seen
for thee vain and foolish visions; and they have not exposed thy iniquity, to restore thy captivity; but have
prophesied for thee burdens of falsehood and deceit" (Eichah, 2:14).
These men, known as "lenient" rabbis, consistently spoke falsehood and deceit, saying that G-d appeared to
them in nocturnal visions. They pretended to look after the holy Jewish People with vain and ill-spirited
proclamations, saying, "Don't worry, everything will be all right. Even if you are lax in sexual matters, it isn't so
bad, you have our permission to walk about the streets of the city in immodest attire, and we are permitting you
to assemble, men and women, and youths of both sexes together. Therefore, dear brothers, why are you so
worried and troubled? Behold, all of you are the holy children of Avraham, Yitzhak, and Yaacov, and you are
leading your daily lives according to our authorized rabbinical supervision. Even if you pollute your eyes with
forbidden images, even if you have slipped into immoral sexual practices, there are ways to amend these things,
it isn't such a terrible thing, for sure, G-d will forgive you."
But, unfortunately my cherished friends, things did not come to pass according to these prophets of falsehood.
The opposite occurred. Harsh and mighty judgments fell upon us, along with terrible sufferings that we had
never known, may G-d have mercy, as it says, "who will fall by the sword, who by famine, who by thirst?" Until it
came to the point where holy and compassionate Jewish women cooked their own children, may G-d save us
from these atrocities.
In this fashion, both Temples were destroyed, the Second like the First, all because of the sins and wickedness of
these same false prophets who constantly led the Jewish People astray with improper and deceitful guidance. All
of the machinations of these evildoers came in an hour when the Jewish People were under siege, at a time of
utter weakness. This brought about national collapse and destruction until the Jews were cast into exile and
forced to endure the grave sufferings that have accompanied our holy nation for nearly two thousand years.
Cherished Jew, stop and think. Have you considered where you are headed? Do you long to cleave to G-d, may
He be blessed, by being His beloved, faithful child in our Holy Land? Or would you rather be exiled once more?
G-d forbid, may this never come upon us. Behold, my dear son, take heed to these heartfelt words that are filled
with the love of G-d, the unique One of the world - you have been warned! Open your eyes!
My dear friend, by reciting "Tikun Yesod Yeshuat Eliahu" in a serious, heartfelt manner after one's morning
prayers, a Jew, the pinnacle of creation, restores, little by little, the holiness of the Brit [sexual behavior] that he
has desecrated by foolishly chasing after the vanities and illusions of this world. It is important to know that the
klipot and the impure spirits that were created and consequently multiplied by the many sins of an erring
individual in sexual transgressions and the spilling of seed in vain, they possess holy souls. The moment that the
souls were ejected from him, the sparks that are the souls, were immediately seized into captivity and blemished.
These souls are held in ransom by the kingdom of evil in the depths of an exile of sighing and suffering, in the
captivity of the Sitra Achra [the realm of evil called the "Other Side"]. The vitality of these klipot comes from the
holy souls that were extracted from the wasted semen that was seized. In this manner, their numbers and power
are increased multifold each day. They use this power, taken from the man who fell into sexual mistakes, to bring
havoc on the world, in a variety of harsh and abnormal tribulations. When these klipot multiply in the world, or in
a particular location where licentious is great, they bring about death and plagues and terrible illnesses, may the
L-rd save us.
championed by our Forefathers is missing. Instead, one hears greetings, "How are you, Esti??" and "How are
you Itzik?" Certainly, everyone feels dandy indeed, but I want to ask you, and please forgive me for affronting
your honor, behold the Torah and our Sages have warned us in many places about the dangers of these matters.
For instance, a man is not supposed to engage in lengthy conversation, even with his wife, let alone with his
neighbor's. Things like this can cause lightheadedness and impure fantasies which pollute the mind, and which
can afterward come to adultery, may G-d save us. Hasn't the Torah warned us not to stray after our hearts? By
being present at mixed gatherings, we bring ourselves into contact with the impure spirit of Midian, who sent
women into the Israeli camp to cause us to err and thus estrange us from our Maker. Doesn't the Torah admonish
us to, "Punish the Midianites and strike them down?"
Behold, my friend, the pleasure of my eye, how much we have to be on guard against mistakes like this! In the
merit of the Torah, may Hashem protect us, and all of the Jewish People, from these errors and insidious follies.
These things can bring a holocaust, G-d forbid, upon our nation, the House of Israel. And no excuses nor
justifications will help. For the Torah has commanded us, "You shall be holy, for I the L-rd your G-d am
holy."
Therefore my precious friend, give this matter serious thought and return to G-d with a full loving heart, without
polluting your holy mind with impure thoughts. Put an end to bad habits and hurry to rise up to a new level of
holiness with all of your strength. Don't lose this precious opportunity while you still have it.
May it be the will of Heaven that in striving to sanctify your lives, and in the merit of the tikunim that you
undertake to perform, that the Blessed One will illuminate the darkness of night which surrounds you, and you
will win His favor and merit to be sanctified from Above, as it says, "Israel in whom I will be glorified." That you
should merit to do the tikunim in a wholehearted fashion, in order that you may ascend the ladder that our
Forefather, Yaacov, was shown in his dream. What was it that Yaacov saw? He was shown the exalted elevation
of the holy Yesod, and the importance of its tikun [rectification] in the eyes of the Holy One Blessed Be He, as it
says, "How awesome is this place. This is none other then the house of G-d, and this is the gateway of heaven."
According to the Kabbalah, it is from this place (the sefirah of Yesod, associated with the male sexual
organ) that life emanates.
For according to the Kabbalah, it is from this place (the sefirah of Yesod, which is associated with the place of the
Brit-sexual organ on man) that life emanates. The Divine blessings and influences go forth from there to all of the
worlds. The tikun of the holy Yesod in holiness and purity eliminates a portion of the klipot, and the souls that
were lost return to their source, as is written, "And the ransomed of the L-rd shall return, and come to Zion with
songs and everlasting joy upon their heads; they shall obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and sighing shall flee
(Yeshayahu, 35:10). The meaning of this verse is that in the tikun of the holy Yesod, and in safeguarding it in the
proper fashion in holiness and purity, then the Holy One Blessed Be He unites with the Shechinah, as it says,
"sasson"/gladness, which is the Holy One Blessed Be He, and "simcha"/joy, which is the Shechinah, unite
together from the greatness of the tikun that you made. Then, "sorrow and sighing shall flee," meaning that the
angel of death (represented by "yagon"/sorrow), and "Plonit," the queen of klipot (represented by
"anacha"/sighing) shall flee.
In other words, these klipot, which were born from your sins, are destroyed and eliminated from the world after
the tikun that you did. No longer can they wreak their devastating destruction on the Nation of Israel. This brings
an immediate and great salvation accompanied by great joy, as it says, "How beautiful upon the mountains are
the feet of him who brings good tidings, that announces peace; that brings good tidings of good, that announces
salvation; that says to Zion, thy G-d reigns" (Yeshayahu, 52:7).
May it be Thy will that the good tidings of a true and lasting Redemption will soon be heard in the House of Israel.
A person's health and livelihood improve in a most meaningful way, as it says, "I was a young man and
now have grown old, yet I have never seen a tzaddik forsaken... and his seed is blessed."
A person attains true and lasting harmony in his home, and peace with all those around him, as it says,
"Behold I give over my Brit of shalom."
Each day that a person makes a tikun, he or she merits that Hashem will shine His Presence on him,
as it says, "He will guard you wherever you go." The person will be protected from all dangers, from illness, road
accidents, terrorist attacks, and all evil occurrences that come upon the world, as it says, "The L-rd will guard you
from all evil, He will guard your life, the L-rd will guard your going forth and your coming in, now and for
evermore."
As a result of the heartfelt recital of "Tikun Yesod Yeshuat Eliahu" a person will be happy in this world
and in the next. His prayers will reap blessing, as it says, "And the L-rd was with Yosef, and he was a man of
success." He will see his children succeed in their endeavors: in enjoying a life of contentment and wealth, in the
fear of Heaven, and in being loved in the eyes of G-d. .
May we all witness the arrival of Mashiach, our righteous one, in our time, soon, Amen.

Tikunim
With Torah, Who Needs Tikunim
Question:
In all due respect to the customs of "Shovavim" (6 straight weeks beginning with the Torah reading of Shmot mid-January), it seems to me that the Kabbalists have gone overboard with all of their "tikunim" [rectification
prayers]. It is known that learning Torah is the ultimate "tikun," without exaggerated fasts, immersions in mikvahs,
and all-night prayers.
Answer:
With all due respect to your comment, while the study of Torah is indeed a powerful "tikun," Rabbi Leon Levi, and
many great masters of Kabbalah, state that it is not enough, by itself, to cleanse the stains of sexual
transgression. For this very reason, the intense, focused penitence of the weeks of "Shovavim" has become a
part of the Jewish year. Indeed, we mentioned that the Rebbe of Tzanz emphasized the supreme value of Torah
learning in overcoming one's evil inclination. He urged his students to learn 18 pages of Gemara every day
during the weeks of "Shovavim" in order to rectify the (spiritual and physical) damage done to the 18 vertebrae of
the spine by the "sins of one's youth." Nevertheless, he also led his congregation in fasting and heartfelt bouts of
penitence and prayer. Lest, a student of Torah think lightly of these matters, he writes:
"Many are those who succumb to this well-known sin and don't themselves know they sinned and that their
doings are abhorred before G-d. And this is the greatest sorrow, for not only does this person not engage in
penitence and feel remorse over his evil deeds, rather, he praises himself in his heart, thinking that he is
complete in his service of G-d, without any failing, and he dresses up in a splendid fashion and parades his good
deeds before all onlookers. Many dear sons of Zion, who, through the mightiness of their Torah learning, were
equipped to become guardians of their generation, failed precisely because of this sin, and yet they do not even
let it enter their minds that thy sinned at all, and thus they do not at all practice the words of King David, And my
sins are always before me.'
"Everyone who is more saintly than his companion must exert more care not to fall prey to this sin. For when
empty-headed people transgress, they do not steal anything from the realm of holiness. And even if they fall
completely into the captivity of the husks (klipot) of the realm of impurity, the forces of impurity do not benefit from
them to any meaningful measure, due to the fact that these people are immersed in their earthly lusts and lack
real holiness, so the Sitra Achra (realm of impurity) cannot draw any holy energy from them.
"However, when a married man who dedicates himself to Torah study, or a yeshiva student who labors over the
Torah and fills himself with learning, nevertheless succumb to disgraceful thoughts and evil fantasies, and ends
up by sinning, behold, he takes all of the Torah that he has learned and transfers it to the realm of
impurity, and his punishment continues even after the fires of Gehinom have died. It would have been better for
him and his soul never to have entered the sanctuary of holiness to meditate over the letters of the holy Torah.
For by doing so, he gives his portion over to foreign powers and gives his strength to strangers. This is
referred to in the Talmud when it states that Torah scholars need to be guarded (Berachot 54A). For
those people who are empty and lacking in Torah and mitzvoth, and have long wallowed in impurity, they
fall into the category of a prohibition does not fall on an existing prohibition.'
"While we must always remind ourselves that the main reason for the Redemption's delay is not caused
by the sins of the people who eat nevilot and traifot (abominable and non kosher foods), or who satiate
their appetites on Yom Kippur. The delay is caused by our sins, by the transgressions of those who are
devoted to Torah and the service of G-d, and who squander sparks of holiness to the realm of impurity. It
is like they entered the Holy of Holies in the Beit HaMikdash (Holy Temple) and extracted the holy vessels, and
handed them over to Nebuchadnezzar and to the wicked Titus. And it is possible that their transgression is even
worse then handing over the holy vessels, for these are only vessels of holiness, while he hands over the
holiness itself into the captivity of the klipot. To restore these sparks to the realm of holiness, a great effort is
required, and a person must shed rivers of tears. It is over this that the Shechinah (Divine Presence) weeps and
cries out, I have been cast off into hands which offer no escape.'" (Halichot Chaim, Chapter on "Shovavim," Pgs.
55-56).
In summary, while Torah learning is certainly a powerful cleanser, when it comes to such a serious transgression,
what's the problem with adding a few sleepless nights and some deep, heartfelt tears?
Question:
According to what you say, a person whose life is filled with sexual misconduct should be
plagued by illness, poverty, and other disasters. However, the opposite is true. Look at all
of the actors, artists, rock stars, and rich people who enjoy the good life with endless
pleasures, money, and fame, and yet they can hardly be said to be sexually pure.
Answer:
Firstly, just because these people are always photographed with big smiles on their faces, this does not mean
that their private lives are free of personal tragedy and pain. Like everyone else, they suffer from financial
worries, problems with children, and marital strife and entanglements.
But assuming there are people who enjoy the "good life" while living a life of sexual transgression, this can be the
worst punishment of all. Because when a person has everything he wants, he can easily forget about G-d. His
arrogance swells, and he thinks he has achieved everything by himself. G-d isn't a part of his life, and this is the
worst punishment, for the only true life is a life filled with G-d.
In effect, this person is a beast, who eats, drinks, has sex, and fills up his lusts with pleasure, but he is already
dead because he has alienated himself from what life is really about - man's connection with his Creator.
Though his life is filled with transgression, G-d, in His kindness, allows him to live, in the hope that he will repent
and return to the Torah. For whatever good deeds he does, he is rewarded in this world. But when he arrives in
Heaven, all of his money, and fame, and sexual conquests won't help him. His extra-marital affairs, and sexual
escapades won't impress the Heavenly Court that awaits him. All of the suffering which he seemingly escaped in
his brief sojourn on earth will await him - multiplied by a million.
As the Zohar teaches:
It is written regarding the wicked, "The way of the wicked is darkness; they do not know that they stumble,"
(Proverbs, 4:19.) In truth they do know, for they walk in a crooked path, and they do not pause to consider that Gd will one day judge them in the world to come, and punish them with the chastisements of Gehinom (place of
punishment in next world). Then they will cry out every day, saying, "Woe to us that we did not turn our ears and
take heed." (Zohar, Bereshit, 59a)
Question:
I am not suggesting that your Torah sources are in error, but it seems to me that you have exaggerated with all of
your fire and brimstone warnings. I can see a movie, or see sexy pics on the Intrnet, go to a crowded beach, or
spend a day with a pretty woman and never experience a wet dream or the desire to masturbate. I am sure this
is true for most men, not only me.
Answer:
This reminds us of man who works in a boiler room. On a hot summer day when
everyone else is sweating, he says he feels cool. He simply has become accustomed to being hot. Because he
works in a boiler room, he is insensitive to hot weather. So too, a man who is accustomed to immodest behavior
and immodest surroundings, does not feel their impact on him. His spiritual radar has become insensitive and
dull.
This is the case with any transgression. If a person does not keep the Sabbath, he does not feel the loss of the
spiritual high that the Sabbath brings to a Jew. If he eats cheeseburgers, he thinks he is just as spiritual as his
Orthodox friend who keeps kosher. In the same way, a merchant who regularly cheats his clients, comes to
believe he is not doing anything wrong - "Business is different."
The fact is that seeing immodestly dressed women at the beach and in the movies dulls a Jew's spiritual world
and distances him from G-d and the Torah. For a person who has an aspiration to live a sanctified life, this is
certainly not the way.
In his book, "Kuntres HaAvodah," Rebbe Sholom Dov Ber of Lubavitch, one of the early great Rebbes of
Chabad, writes the following:
"Everyone who is concerned about his soul, not to pollute it, G-d forbid, should guard over his eyes. And if this is
difficult for him, he should endeavor to restrain himself with all of his strength and might. He must take to heart
that this matter is instrumental to the wellbeing of his soul, and if he does not guard himself in this matter, then all
of his Divine service is accounted as nothing, and all of his achievements are as naught, and his service of G-d
will fall lower and lower....
"Behold, there are people who are far from actually committing evil deeds, G-d forbid, but their hearts pull them
to look and stare (at women.) They gaze with a seemingly cold detachment, and they do not feel any immediate
excitement when they look, but the reason for their being attracted is because they experience an inner
pleasure... This gazing, even with seeming detachment, creates an impression and a great stain on the psyche,
which will not go away without arousing some actual evil in its wake, G-d forbid....
"Thus, it is every man's duty to control himself and to guard over the things he sees. In so doing, he will save
himself from evil, and his service of G-d will find favor. He will bring salvation to his soul, and he will rise higher
and higher." (Kuntres HaAvodah, Ch. 2. For an English translation and commentary, see the book, "Love Like
Fire and Water," Moznaim Publishing Corp.)
[See an essay by the Kabbalist Rav Eliahu Leon Levy on guarding the eyes.]
Question:
I am a yeshiva student who is plagued by sexual fantasies. I know that the Sages advise "dragging your evil
inclination to the Beit Midrash (House of Study) whenever it attacks you, but my yetzer (sexual fantasies) follows
me there even when I am trying to learn Torah. What can I do?
Answer:
First of all, you shouldn't succumb to despair. You should know that the higher a person is in his spiritual world,
the more he is tested. This is how G-d builds spiritual champions. And a man is never tested by something that he
doesn't have the inner potential to overcome. So keep up the battle, cry out for G-d's help, and you will surely win
in the war against the yetzer.
