Reflection:
This lesson was very well received by the class! They loved the idea and were engaged for the entire class.
Expectations were laid out at the beginning of the class and this class management strategy worked to avoid any major issues
that may arise. It was explained that there were different cookie cutters laid out around the room (supplies were distributed to
the groups ahead of the lesson) but that only 1 person per group could be out of their desks at a time. This ensured that the
entire class was not up and moving about at the same time. Groups could trade cookie cutters but you needed to ask first, and
there were extra supplies at the front if needed. Students were able to self-monitor and regulate the class themselves given
these guidelines.
During this activity a large part of the class was pulled out and returned later. This was not anticipated but the activity was
easily picked back up when the students returned. As it appears that December is an unpredictable and busy month in schools,
this activity lends itself well to the days where students may be coming or going throughout the lesson.
If I were to do this lesson again in the future, the one thing I would change would be to encourage the students to decorate the
ornaments a little bit more. Some of the class challenged themselves to see how many they could make but did minimal design
on each ornament. I did not give any guidelines on this and it was not a major issue but it would meet more outcomes if they
were to put more thought into the appearance of the ornaments.
Another point to consider would be scent sensitivities in the class. These ornaments are very aromatic and the classroom
smells strongly of cinnamon for a long while. We did this project at the end of the day on a Thursday (Friday was an event day
so we were out of the classroom) to allow for drying time over the weekend and this also kept our exposure to the strong scent
to a minimum.
