PURPOSE AND USE OF PROCESS INDUSTRY PRACTICES


In an effort to minimize the cost of process industry facilities, this Practice has
been prepared from the technical requirements in the existing standards of major
industrial users, contractors, or standards organizations. By harmonizing these technical
requirements into a single set of Practices, administrative, application, and engineering
costs to both the purchaser and the manufacturer should be reduced. While this Practice
is expected to incorporate the majority of requirements of most users, individual
applications may involve requirements that will be appended to and take precedence over
this Practice. Determinations concerning fitness for purpose and particular matters or
application of the Practice to particular project or engineering situations should not be
made solely on information contained in these materials. The use of trade names from
time to time should not be viewed as an expression of preference but rather recognized
as normal usage in the trade. Other brands having the same specifications are equally
correct and may be substituted for those named. All practices or guidelines are intended
to be consistent with applicable laws and regulations including OSHA requirements. To
the extent these practices or guidelines should conflict with OSHA or other applicable
laws or regulations, such laws or regulations must be followed. Consult an appropriate

Introduction
1.1

Purpose
The purpose of this Practice is to provide instruction and/or direction to designers for
preparation of the Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger Specification Sheet (hereafter
referred to as the Specification Sheet). The Specification Sheet, prepared in
conjunction with PIP VECV1001 and PIP VESV1002 completes a specification
suitable for obtaining comprehensive bids and subsequent purchase of shell and tube
heat exchangers. Note that PIP VEDV1003, Vessel Drawing/Data Sheet and
Instructions, does not apply to shell and tube heat exchangers.

Scope
This Practice identifies information to be placed on the PIP Shell and Tube Heat
Exchanger Specification Sheet.

Applicable requirements in the latest edition (or the edition indicated) of the following industry
standards and references shall be considered an integral part of this Practice. Short titles will
be used herein when appropriate.

Use of this Practice


3.1

Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger Specification Sheet


The Specification Sheet is an element of a complete shell and tube heat exchanger
specification. This form provides preprinted line items to be completed by the designer
and/or fabricator. Some sections of this form are optional and will not apply to some
designs or may be omitted when agreed with the User to comply with the preparers
established work process.

3.2

Entering Text and Data


Each numbered line of the Specification Sheet should be properly filled in or marked
with NA to indicate that the information is not applicable. It is suggested that lines
be left blank if the information is not known at the time. Lines not completed indicate
the form is not complete and should be filled in by the designer or manufacturer.

Additional information that may be required, but does not have a preprinted
description line, should be added in the Remarks area of the Specification Sheet.

4.1

Data Description
Appendix A provides guidance for completion of information on Page 1 of the
Specification Sheet.

4.2

Specification Sheet
Appendix B provides a hardcopy of each page that may be required to define the shell
and tube heat exchanger. Optional information may be:

Performance of One Unit (Page 1): This may be optional when the User or
Process Licensor considers this information proprietary.

Connection Schedule (Page 2), Materials of Construction (Page 2), Gaskets


(Page 2): Used when the Designer/User requires such level of detail to define
materials for individual components. These sections may not be necessary if the
information is defined sufficiently on Page 1.

Thermal Expansion Design Exchanger Design Information (Page 2): This is


required only for exchangers such as fixed tubesheet or single pass floating head
type exchangers where thermal expansion must be considered for the mechanical
design.

Additional Remarks, Sketches, Etc. (Page 3): Used for additional remarks when
sufficient space is not available on Page 1. Also used for schematic sketches to
illustrate required features of the design and tube layouts when necessary to
provide this information to the Manufacturer.

Pages 4 and 5: One or both pages may be necessary when boiling and/or
condensing fluids with ranges of physical properties occur.
