STATE/LOCAL
BRIEFS
AAA: 3.8M Ohioans
expected to travel
for holidays
COLUMBUS (AP) Auto
club AAA predicts a recordhigh number of Ohioans will
travel at least 50 miles from
home during a 13-day holiday period that begins before
Christmas and ends in the new
year.
It estimates more than 3.8
million Ohioans will make such
trips between Dec. 23 and Jan.
4, mostly by road. Air travel
also is forecast to increase a bit.
AAA says economic
improvements and relatively
low gas prices contribute to
the expectation of more travel. Timing is also a factor:
Christmas Day and New Years
Day fall on Thursdays this year,
making the holiday travel period a day longer than last year.
Farmers voice
concern over
flood-control plan
FINDLAY (AP) The
head of an agency overseeing a plan to reduce flooding along the Blanchard River
in northwestern Ohio says a
firsthand look at the area has
helped him understand the
problem.
Army Corps of Engineers
commander Lt. Col. Karl
Jansen of the Buffalo District
met recently with farmers in the
Findlay area to hear their concerns about the flooding plan.
The Army Corps is proposing to construct a ninemile channel that would divert
floodwater from a creek away
from Findlay and build a levee
to keep water from spilling
over into the city.
The Hancock County Farm
Bureau is against the idea
because it believes the project
will take up too much cropland and bring more flooding
to the fields.
Farm bureau leaders have
said that cleaning up the river
will help reduce the flooding,
but Army Corps has said that
will not make much of a difference, The Courier newspaper reported.

NEW YORK (AP) While Hollywood continued to wrestle with the fallout of the Sony hacking scandal, the weekend
box office offered the solace of a moviegoing truism: Hobbits
sell.
Peter Jacksons final installment of his six J.R.R. Tolkien
adventures, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,
debuted with $56.2 million over the weekend and $90.6 million since opening Wednesday, according to studio estimates
Sunday. For an industry reeling from the cancellation of The
Interview and terrorist threats against moviegoers, Middleearth provided reliable refuge.

KALIDA Jeffersons
boys basketball team might
not have had much left in the
tank Saturday night at The
Wildcat Den of Kalida High
School.
After all, they were just
coming off an overtime loss
the night before to archrival Columbus Grove in
Northwest Conference action.
Perhaps it showed in the
shooting 27.1 percent
as the visiting Wildcats fell
50-39 to the host Wildcats in
non-league action.
We have nothing left;
were running on empty
and we have no answers. I
thought we had a good game
plan but Kalida does a great
job of forcing your role players to step up, Jefferson
coach Marc Smith explained.

measure.
Ive been on Kylie for 2 1/2 years
now to shoot the ball more, Huber said.
She is so passive and its a good trait
to have, I guess, to be unselfish, but
at some point you have to realize youve made every shot you
have taken you have to shoot the
ball a little more. We have other
people that are capable of scoring
as Jackie (Gardner) is capable of
driving by anyone and Nicole (Recker)
is capable of penetrating and kicking
(the ball) out, so you have to be able to
step out and seek those shots you can get
when that is happening.
Osterhage scored the first five points
of the game as she dropped in a short
jumper, then stepped back and hit a
3-pointer. After Alyssa Louth scored for
the Musketeers, Osterhage hit another
three giving Kalida an 8-2 lead. Erin
Osting hit a basket for the Musketeers
before Joni Kaufman ended Osterhages
run of points for Kalida hitting a three
of her own before Osterhage was fouled
and hit the second of two free throws for
a 12-4 Kalida lead.

Cleopatras legacy
shrouded in mystery
with Julius Caesar
and a son with Mark
Antony. Did she have
any other children?
What happened to
her children? -- M.Z.,
Glove, Ariz.
A: Cleopatra had
four children. Her
son with Caesar was
named Caesarion. Her
firstborn with Antony
was a son named
Ptolemy Philadelphus.
She and Antony also
had twins, Alexander
Helios and Cleopatra
Selene.
Because Caesarion
was believed to pose a
threat to the new ruler
of Rome, Octavian, he
was murdered. Antony
and
Cleopatras
three children were
sent to Rome and
put under the care
of Octavians sister,
Octavia,
Antonys
wife. Cleopatra Selene
married King Juba II
of Mauretania. No one
knows what happened
to Alexander Helios or
Ptolemy Philadelphus.

are
explained by these
psychological
conditions. I think
the
evidence
increasingly indicates
that fibromyalgia is
an illness with real
underlying physical
causes.
A
characteristic
feature of fibromyalgia
is pain and stiffness
that occur in specific
spots along the body,
called tender points.
The area between the
shoulder blades and
the bottom of the neck
tends to be the most
painful. In people
with
fibromyalgia,
only certain spots
are tender; pushing
on other parts of the
body does not cause
pain. (Ive put an
illustration of tender
points
along
the
body on my website,
AskDoctorK.com.)
When we feel pain
-- any type of pain -it is because certain
nerve endings are
stimulated.
Those
nerves send chemical
signals to a part of
the brain where pain
is felt. Doctors
and scientists are
beginning to unravel
the chemistry of
pain. People with
fibromyalgia

To manage the
pain, doctors often
recommend over-thecounter pain relievers.
Examples
include
acetaminophen
(Tylenol), ibuprofen
(Motrin,
Advil)
and
naproxen
(Aleve). A doctor
may also prescribe
a muscle relaxant
or
antidepressant
to
relieve
pain.
Doctors also often
treat the condition
with these drugs:
cyclobenzaprine,
amitriptyline
and
gabapentin.
In recent years, the
FDA has approved
three drugs to treat
fibromyalgia. One is
pregabalin (Lyrica), an
anticonvulsant drug.
The other two are
antidepressant drugs,
duloxetine (Cymbalta)
and
milnacipran
(Savella).
But medications are
often ineffective. Nondrug treatments are
more likely to help.
Heat and massage, for
example, can provide
short-term pain relief.

Since Burchfield has been working in the county prosecutors office, he will not be able to fully assume the case load in
Common Pleas Court directly after taking office. Those cases
that came through the prosecutors office while Burchfield
worked there will require another judge to hear. According
to Current Judge Charles D. Steele, Since Judge Burchfield
comes from the prosecutors office it will be necessary to have
other judges take care of all cases pending in the prosecutors
office until Judge Burchfield takes office. It could take several
months for all those cases to go through court. Even after that
there could be cases coming back like motions for judicial
release and probation violations from cases that occurred when
Judge Burchfield was in the prosecutors office.
Steele confirmed that he has been appointed as a visiting
retired judge by the Ohio Supreme Court, so he and Judge
Kevin Taylor will be handling cases until Burchfield takes
over. Once Burchfield takes the bench, he will be handling the
newly filed cases.
The situation is not unique for a newly appointed judge. I
had the same situation and used visiting judges when I first
took office, Steele stated.
