communityproud of its heritage and history, but
confronting its challenges head on, constantly looking for ways
to be the best it can possibly be. For us at the Brandywine
Health Foundation, that means seeking out innovative ways to
address entrenched needs while, at the same time, making sure
that our grantees are positioned for future success so that their
improvements take hold and flourish long term.
This past year, we supported the merger of ChesPenn and
Community Dental, whichin an increasingly competitive
healthcare marketplacestrengthened their infrastructure and
financial bottom line. Just as importantly, the merger has enabled
the combined entity to better meet our communitys dental and
primary care needs.
Based on your feedback during last years strategic planning
process, we also successfully spun off the Coatesville Youth
Initiative (CYI) as an independent nonprofit agency. This frees
up its talented staff and committed new board to grow in ways
we couldnt begin to foresee during its five-year incubation period
at the foundation. Kudos to Chaya Scott, CYIs executive director,
for her leadership and all of the hard work that she is investing in
building the new CYI.

In Memoriam

The Brandywine Health Foundation mourns the passing and honors

the memory of two of its longtime supporters.
Paul Judge Johnson, a member of the Coatesville
Area School Board, former district justice and
Coatesville councilman, died last December at the
age of 82. Mr. Johnson was also a former member
of the board of directors of the Coatesville Health
Development Corporation since the formation of
the Brandywine Center.
Phyllis Ann Stewart, who passed away in April
at the age of 60, was a dedicated member of the
foundations Garden Party Committee. She was the
wife of Marvin Stewart, who chairs the foundations
Human Resources Advisory Committee.
Paul and Phyllis are sorely missed and fondly
remembered by their colleagues and friends at the
Brandywine Health Foundation.

In Memoriam

The Brandywine Health Foundation mourns the passing and honors

the memory of two of its longtime supporters.
Paul Judge Johnson, a member of the Coatesville
Area School Board, former district justice and
Coatesville councilman, died last December at the
age of 82. Mr. Johnson was also a former member
of the board of directors of the Coatesville Health
Development Corporation since the formation of
the Brandywine Center.
Phyllis Ann Stewart, who passed away in April
at the age of 60, was a dedicated member of the
foundations Garden Party Committee. She was the
wife of Marvin Stewart, who chairs the foundations
Human Resources Advisory Committee.
Paul and Phyllis are sorely missed and fondly
remembered by their colleagues and friends at the
Brandywine Health Foundation.

chance of serious health problems, for years now the
Blancas-Vazquez familyfather, mother and their three
childrenhave regularly taken advantage of the high-quality,
affordable medical and dental care provided to patients at the
foundation-supported Brandywine Center.
Twice a year Marco Antonio Blancas Jr., 15, and his two sisters,
Diana, 13, and Gabriela, 9, have had their teeth examined and
cleaned, and theyve gotten fluoride treatments, sealant
applications and had a few cavities filled. In addition to exams
and cleanings, their parents Marco Antonio Blancas Sr. and
Hortencia Vazquez have gotten several crowns. The children
have also come to the center for wellness checkups and
vaccinations, and doctors have treated the family for flu and
upset stomachs.

Dental and Medical Care Merge

Now, thanks to a crucial merger this
summer between the foundationsupported providersChesPenn
Health Services and the Chester County
Community Dental Centerthe essential
services that the Blancas-Vasquez family
and more than 3,000 other Coatesville
area adults and children have been
receiving are becoming even more
affordable, convenient and integrated.
Effective July 1, Community Dental
became the dental provider of
ChesPenns Center for Family Health
in the Brandywine Center.
We know how critical dental health is
to general health and it just makes sense
to have our medical and dental health
providers working together as a team to

improve our patients health, says Regina

Horton Lewis, who was Community
Dentals executive director.
The foundation also strongly supported
the merger because of the financial
advantages ChesPenn enjoys as a
Federally Qualified Health Center
advantages that are making the dental
care it provides even more affordable.
As an FQHC, ChesPenn qualifies for
significantly more generous Medicaid
reimbursements than Community Dental
received. It also is able to offer uninsured
patients a more generous sliding-scale
fee schedule.
With dental offices now in three of
ChesPenns four health centers in Chester
and Delaware counties, dental patients

are also benefiting from economies of

scale. Since the services we offer are
more affordable, says Michael G. Lucas,
ChesPenns president and CEO, patients
can now access care more easily and are
more likely to get the regular care they
really need to stay as healthy as possible.
Thats certainly been true for the BlancasVazquez family. Its hard for a lot of
patients to pay the full amount, so the
fee reduction really helps families, says
Hortencia Vazquez through a translator.
Otherwise, we wouldnt be able to come
every six months for dental cleanings and
checkups, and thats true for the medical
care as well.
The floral designer and her husband, a
construction worker, also appreciate the
convenience of being able to receive both
medical and dental care on the same
ground floor of the Brandywine Center
which reduces the time they must take
off from work. Theyve often scheduled
back-to-back medical and dental
appointments. We dont have to run
to another place and we feel very
comfortable here, adds Vazquez.
Were very grateful. I dont know what
we would do if they werent here.

CYI Stands on Its Own

The first day your children go to school. The day they get a drivers
license. The day they leave for college. The day they get married. As a
parent, there are many times when, having done your job, you simply
have to get out of the way and let your children stand on their own.
So it was that, with a great sense of pride, on January 1, 2014, the
Brandywine Health Foundation stood back to allow the Coatesville
Youth Initiative to become its own free-standing nonprofit organization.
CYI was born five years ago after an
intensive community-wide process
engineered by the foundation. Determined
to address one of Coatesvilles greatest
needs, CYI became an organization that
united community organizations so that
they could collectively help youth reach
their fullest potential. Bolstered by 41
different community partners, it now
annually serves more than 2,000 students
directly and another 3,000 indirectly
through a variety of initiativesyouth

leadership programs, service opportunities,

and college and career preparation.
After CYI established itself as a bedrock
of the Coatesville community, the
foundation felt that it could grow even
more if it became independent.
With the foundations funding and
support, we were able to incubate CYI into
something with long-term viability to the
point where, five years later, CYI had such
a strong reputation in the community and

such strong, established leadership that

we were able to spin ourselves off into a
separate nonprofit, says Tom Belmont, a
BHF board member who now chairs CYIs
board of directors. Weve come out of the
gate very strong.

To ensure that CYI started off with a

strong foundation, the BHF initiated
the wildly successful Campaign for
Coatesvilles Kids. It also secured grants
from the Barra, Philadelphia and Chester
County Community foundations to fund
CYIs transition and strategic planning
costs. In addition, through future grants
and proceeds of the foundations annual
Strawberry Festival and Festive 5K Run/
Walk, the foundation will continue to
support CYI.
We are family, says Chaya Scott, CYIs
executive director since its inception, and
the foundation continues to provide love,
support and encouragement through this
entire process.
Why does CYI matter? Consider Alazia
Turner, a three-year participant in
CYIs Summer ServiceCorps, which
provides full-time, meaningful summer
employment with community service

agencies, as well as life-skills learning.

A junior at Coatesville Area High School,
Turner has worked the past three summers
at the Regency Park Apartments summer
day camp; at Handi-Crafters in Thorndale,
which provides employment opportunities
and support for persons with disabilities;
and at Brandywine Hospital.
CYI has changed me immensely, says
Turner. I feel greater self-confidence
and self-esteem and Ive learned so much
about myself. Her experience at HandiCrafters two summers ago was particularly
influential: The clients there taught me
that you cant take anything for granted,
that I need to take every opportunity I
have to make my life better and to make
greatness out of everything Ive been
givenwhich, after college, she intends
to do by pursuing a career working with
people who have mental disabilities and
physical handicaps.

Campaign for Coatesvilles Kids

efore the Coatesville Youth Initiative became its own independent nonprofit organization on January 1, 2014,
the Brandywine Health Foundation was committed to making sure its financial footing was rock solid.
So BHF launched the Campaign for Coatesvilles Kids. Thanks to tremendous community support, in less than
a year the campaign raised more than $1.2 millionsurpassing the campaign goal by more than $150,000.

Campaign contributions are being earmarked as follows:

$700,000 to provide the Coatesville

Youth Initiative with a substantial
first-year nest egg;

$400,000 to endow permanently the

Harry Lewis Jr. Scholarship Fund,

which each year provides a scholarship

We viewed the campaign as a chance to

really make a bigger commitment to the
kids of the Coatesville community and we
were overwhelmed by the response, says
Tom Belmont, CYI board chair and
foundation board member who also
chaired the fundraising campaign. It
came from the generosity of a lot of people
who have seen the successes of CYI and
the foundation and our joint commitment
to the Coatesville community.

honorary co-chairs Dallas and Dale Krapf,
longtime foundation supporters who
operate their familys Krapf Bus Company
Inc. My brother, two of our sisters and
I are Coatesville Area High School
graduates, and we want to support the
next generation of Coatesville students,
Dallas explains.
Among the largest contributors and
additional honorary co-chairs were Brit
and Bill Kay Sr. Brit has been a member of

I like the scholarships, says Bill, who
operates Drexelbrook Apartments in
Drexel Hill. Education is very important
for Coatesvilles children to enable them
to overcome some of the disadvantages
many of them start off with.
Over the past five years CYI has worked
to forge a strong partnership with the
Coatesville Area School District. Thats
why the campaigns financial supporters
included Cathy L. Taschner, Ed.D., the
new superintendent of the Coatesville
Area School District, and CYI board
member Kimberly Kiszely, the school
districts guidance coordinator and a
senior high school guidance counselor.

Programa new initiative that will
allow Coatesvilles teens to serve as
grantmakers themselves by awarding
$12,000 to $15,000 per year to local
nonprofit groups.

The campaign has allowed all those

programs to run without any charge
for the schools or the children, says
Kiszely. And programs like the Summer
ServiceCorps change kids tremendously.
They mature and come back with direction
and focus, a drive to set future goals and
finish out high school strong.
CYI is a great partner, a great support
for our students, adds Taschner. It
has not only helped raise money for
scholarships but also raised awareness
about how to navigate the financial aid
and college application process. And what
a blessing is CYIs Summer ServiceCorps
in helping students identify their areas of
strength and turning them into a passion
for careers that become not just a job but
a lifelong purpose and mission.

Programs like the Summer ServiceCorps

change kids tremendously. They mature
and come back with direction and focus,
a drive to set future goals and finish out
high school strong.

group of volunteers, chaired by vice chair Dawn James, with experienced
accountants who do not serve on the board of directors. It is this committees
responsibility to hire, evaluate and oversee the work of the foundations

and our new Coatesville Youth Philanthropy Program, here are several examples of the
hundreds of big-hearted donors, volunteers and community organizations
that share our commitment to our Coatesville neighbors.

This past year Jeff and Carolyn March made a

substantial personal contribution to the
Campaign for Coatesvilles Kids. Citadel
of which Jeff is president and CEOalso
pledged to completely underwrite the
campaigns new Youth Philanthropy
Program. We look for organizations that
are well run, that use our money wisely to
make an impact, says Carolyn.
Im the poster child for these programs,
adds Jeff, a Coatesville native and oldest of

Longtime supporters of the foundation and its

annual Garden Party fundraiser, St. Pauls
Baptist Church in West Chester also
contributed to the Campaign for
Coatesvilles Kids this past year. In
addition, the church embraced the
foundations mission by sponsoring a
successful health insurance enrollment
sign-up at the Brandywine Center prior
to the Affordable Care Act deadline. This
effort was organized by Denise James (left, in
photo), parishioner and BHF board member.

We have a number of members who

have benefited from Brandywine Health

Special friends and supporters of the

foundation since its inception, during the
past year Sam Slater and his wife of
30 years, Lornie Forbes, contributed to
the Campaign for Coatesvilles Kids and
served on the campaign committee.
Another of their extremely generous gifts
made possible CYIs Brandywine Trek
environmental awareness camp.
Were very interested in having kids
learn about the environment and seeing

seven children whose mother and family received

significant local support when Jeff s father
died. As he shared at the business breakfast
he co-hosted with Anthony Lubrano to
kick off the campaign, Had it not been
for the Coatesville community giving me
strong building blocks, I would have been
one of the children at risk who these
programs help.
We believe that children have to have
a good start.

Foundation-supported services, says the churchs pastor,

the Rev. Wayne Croft (right, in photo). But we also
know that they have tremendously helped the
overall community. With their work with
youth, young adults and seniors,
it is a great foundation to support.
Church member Marvin Stewart and his
wife Phyllis, who passed away in April, have
also been staunch foundation supporters.
Helping the less fortunate with healthcare
and helping our young people become
productive citizens are both very worthy
causes, says Stewart, who chairs the foundations
Human Resources Advisory Committee.

In Memoriam

The Brandywine Health Foundation mourns the passing and honors

the memory of two of its longtime supporters.
Paul Judge Johnson, a member of the Coatesville
Area School Board, former district justice and
Coatesville councilman, died last December at the
age of 82. Mr. Johnson was also a former member
of the board of directors of the Coatesville Health
Development Corporation since the formation of
the Brandywine Center.
Phyllis Ann Stewart, who passed away in April
at the age of 60, was a dedicated member of the
foundations Garden Party Committee. She was the
wife of Marvin Stewart, who chairs the foundations
Human Resources Advisory Committee.
Paul and Phyllis are sorely missed and fondly
remembered by their colleagues and friends at the
Brandywine Health Foundation.

call Coatesville and its environs an aspirational

communityproud of its heritage and history, but
confronting its challenges head on, constantly looking for ways
to be the best it can possibly be. For us at the Brandywine
Health Foundation, that means seeking out innovative ways to
address entrenched needs while, at the same time, making sure
that our grantees are positioned for future success so that their
improvements take hold and flourish long term.
This past year, we supported the merger of ChesPenn and
Community Dental, whichin an increasingly competitive
healthcare marketplacestrengthened their infrastructure and
financial bottom line. Just as importantly, the merger has enabled
the combined entity to better meet our communitys dental and
primary care needs.
Based on your feedback during last years strategic planning
process, we also successfully spun off the Coatesville Youth
Initiative (CYI) as an independent nonprofit agency. This frees
up its talented staff and committed new board to grow in ways
we couldnt begin to foresee during its five-year incubation period
at the foundation. Kudos to Chaya Scott, CYIs executive director,
for her leadership and all of the hard work that she is investing in
building the new CYI.

We were able to spin off the CYI thanks to the overwhelming

success of the foundations Campaign for Coatesvilles Kids.
Chaired by Tom Belmont Jr., with your generous support the
campaign raised over $1.2 million. As this community report
indicates, these funds are enhancing the abilities of both CYI
and the foundation to provide critical program support and
needed scholarships for years to come.

Building upon these major improvements, were laying the

groundwork for exciting new projects that youll learn more about
during the coming months. Two examples: the development of
our youth-directed philanthropy program, with major support
from Citadel, and our partnership with the Coatesville
Area School District to implement the Youth Mental Health
First Aid curriculum here. After the districts rocky year, we
and the community welcome our new superintendent, Cathy
Taschner, EdD, who shares our aspirational goals for the
Coatesville area.
