Image Notes
1. 3 volt battery pack from a walkie talkie being charged off a 1.5 volt AA
Image Notes
1. single strand wire with rubber insulation. it works well for winding toroids, since
the insulation cant be scratched off easily like magnet wire. but magnet wire is
more widely available. and yes, i know its pink.
2. 2N3904 NPN transistor, slavaged from a radio
3. 1K ohm resistor (brown, black, red, gold)
4. germanium diode, from old radio as well.
5. Small toroid from switched-mode power supply

Image Notes
1. Closeup of diode. Many glass-bodied "cat whisker" diodes have a low
voltage drop, suitable for this circuit
Image Notes
1. large toroid with many turns
2. small toroid with fewer turns. this is the one used in the project
Image Notes
1. Glue to secure wires
2. 4 loose ends
3. Evenly spaced and tightly wrapped coils. Keeping the coils even and tight
increase the efficency of the circuit
Step 3: Schematic
Now that the transformer has been prepared, its time to look at the schematic and begin assembling the circuit. The schematic is very simple. Its obvious which
components are which, but just incase:
B1 is the AA, C, or D battery cell powering the circuit
S1 is a SPST switch
T1 is the toroid transformer
R1 is the 1K ohm resistor
Q1 is the 2N3904 transistor
D1 is the diode
the voltage out connection goes to the battery to be charged.

4. B2
Image Notes
1. B1 and A2 stripped and twisted together
Image Notes
1. A1 attached to resistor. B2 could also be used.

1. Resistor bent up next to toroid, and the transtor resting on top. The flat side is
facing up, with the center lead soldered to the resistor

Image Notes
1. Right lead of transistor (emitter) attatched to last loose end of transformer.
Image Notes
1. Diode also attatched to the emitter of the transistor, and bent down next to the
toroid.
Image Notes
1. AA battery for size comparison.
2. Positive input to circuit
3. Positive output to battery to be charged

Image Notes
1. Negative input terminal
2. Positive input terminal
3. Magnet to attatch circuit to battery
4. Circuit, without voltage output wires attatched
Image Notes
1. Circuit mounted on C battery. The alligator clips for the volatge ouput
connection have not been soldered on yet
Image Notes
1. Voltage ouput connections soldered on
2. AA battery
