Q1. Read the following passage and answer the questions given below .
Great people are often born in the commonest of surroundings and rise above their
circumstances through their hard work and perseverance. Parthiv Patel grew up in a very
small house in the city area of Ahmedabad. He never had a room of his own growing up. His
dream was to play for the Indian cricket team. Years of practice, constant sacrifice of small
and large pleasures and single minded devotion to the game gave him an opportunity to play
for the country. The Pathan brothers are another example of grit and determination.
The field of sports at least cannot deny its greats their due. The field of research and writing
is however quite another story. Mr. Sharma worked at a theory in physics and presented his
findings in a paper after 10 years of research. Mr. Sharma is the son of displaced Kashmiri
pandits and grew up in a refugee camp in Delhi. He has worked hard to put himself through
school and college and support his younger siblings after his father's demise. However, the
book and paper were published in the another scientist's name. This left him depressed and
dejected. It took Mr. Sharma a long time to recover from this trauma. This incident also killed
the desire to research and publish in him. He became just another government employee,
going through the motions of his daily job. The country lost another of its brains, forever.
On the other hand, there are great people like Vikram Sarabhai, Homi Bhaba and
Rabindranath Tagore who came from well to do families and added greatly to their family
prestige by becoming icons in society, did not have to worry about their daily bread and
could choose the profession of their choice. It would be worthy to note that all these people
lived and worked before Independence! Society encouraged and built them up as icons and in
return they gave judiciously back to the people of the country even though the rulers did not.
Great talent can never be suppressed. It will express itself in any surroundings and
circumstances. The important thing is to discover it in time and allow it to flourish.
