the BENEFITS
of STEEL
Superior and
Uniform Quality
■ Steel is roll formed into precise, uniform shapes with exacting
tolerances for consistent material quality. There is no need for
sorting (culling) or special handling to inspect for crown.
■ Steel studs are straight. They don’t warp, twist, bow, split or have knots, which means
straight walls, square corners and doors and windows that open and close properly.
BUILD with S
■ Steel is dimensionally stable and won’t shrink like wood, eliminating nail popping, What about Rust?

■ Steel does not rot, promote mold or mildew and is impermeable to termites, vermin attic spaces or crawl spaces that are not
and insects. exposed to water will last over 300
years, per a study conducted in England.
■ Forensic studies recently conducted on
Oahu residences built over 40 years ago
showed steel wall studs with no visible
signs of corrosion.
■ Zinc coating protects steel by providing
a physical barrier as well as cathodic
protection to the underlying steel. When
the base is exposed, such as at a cut
or scratch, the steel is cathodically
protected by the sacrificial corrosion of
the zinc coating adjacent to the steel.
■ More economical
than traditional
masonry, concrete
and other
construction
methods.
■ Significantly less
costly than wood 2x4s
for nonload-bearing wall framing.
■ Reduces or eliminates callback costs for
nail pops, floor squeaks and wall cracks
due to shrinkage. The NAHB estimates
the average callback costs the builder
over $350.00 per call.

the BENEFITS
of STEEL
...for benefits t
What about Lightning?
■ Steel buildings are lightning resistant because steel framing provides
multiple conductive paths directly to the ground.
■ The steel frame reduces the likelihood of explosions, secondary fires
or personal injury.
■ Steel skyscrapers have provided occupants with safe offices and
residences for years.
Earthquakes or Hurricanes?
■ Steel framing can be engineered to meet the highest seismic and wind loads
prescribed by building codes.
■ Steel has the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any framing material; a lighter
structure with stronger connections results in lower damage from seismic force.
■ Steel’s strength and resiliency help it to survive earthquakes.
■ Smaller probability of damage in high winds; stronger connections
(screwed vs. nailed) can withstand greater winds.
■ For generations we have relied on the strength and durability of steel in our
commercial buildings, hospitals and schools.

Long Leg (Deflection) Track (TR-Series™) with Spazzer® 9200 Bar (SPZD)
■ Eliminates high material cost of custom-made head tracks.
■ Requires only a single generic Deep Leg track to provide deflection.
■ Facilitates sprayable Intumescent/Elastomeric firestops.
■ Eliminates stud spacing layout at deck.
■ Improves drywall hanging since bow is removed from tall studs.
■ Automatically positions and rigidly holds studs on 16”
or 24” centers without fasteners in the head track.
Dietrich™ TradeReady® Spazzer® 9200 is a prenotched, 20-gauge, galvanized Spazzer® 9200
steel spacer bar engineered to handle deflection at the head track of Deep Leg
interior nonstructural stud walls. The prenotched slots and gripping power Track
of the 50-inch bar holds studs into a rigid, accurately laid out gridwork that
has excellent resistance to stud rotation and displacement.
The Spazzer® 9200 spacer bar saves time and materials by eliminating the
cost of custom head tracks and the time required to fasten and remove
screws or layout stud spacing at the deck. Hanging drywall is also faster
and easier because the Spazzer® 9200 spacer bar eliminates the bow that
often occurs in tall interior studs.

Blocking is field cut from the same size excess track. Solid
blocking is made by cutting the flanges of the material and
bending the web to form a 4" overlap on the wall member.
Drywall Stud
Solid blocking is installed in the first and last two bays of
each wall section, with one additional block every 8' of wall.
Continuous strapping, 2" x 20 gauge or heavier as specified,
is then installed on both stud faces, or one face if the
opposite side is fully sheathed.
Block (TR/ST)
Blocking is typically field cut from the same or heavier excess track stock and secured between wall studs. Stud stock is also an option. Studs are
attached using EasyClip™ U- or S-Series™ clip angles. Blocking should be installed in the first two bays, the last two bays and every 8 feet.

Dietrich™ resilient channel is one of the most efficient
low-cost methods developed to reduce transmission of
airborne sound through partition and ceiling assemblies.
The resilient channel dampens sound waves effectively,
dissipating the energy and reducing sound transmission by
suspending gypsum wallboard 1/2" from the stud or joist.
Sound absorption can be maximized by utilizing sound
attenuation blankets within the wall or floor cavity.
RC Deluxe™
Resilient channel is manufactured from 25- and 20-gauge
corrosion-resistant galvanized steel and is available with
single or double legs. The single leg resilient channel is
available in regular (RCUR) and deluxe (RCSD/RCSE) sizes.
Dietrich™ high-performance single leg resilient channel
(RCUR) has a 1-1/4" screw flange. The RCUR is commonly
used in wall applications. Dietrich™ RC Deluxe™ resilient
channel (RCSD/RCSE) is the preferred resilient channel in
many applications because of its extra-wide 1-1/2" screw
flange. The extra-wide flange provides added rigidity and a
wider surface for faster and easier installation of sheathing
materials.
Dietrich™ double leg resilient channel (RCDN/RCDE) has
two legs for rapid installation. Double leg resilient
installation is typically used for ceiling applications with
multiple layers of gypsum board. Double leg resilient is Double Leg Resilient
easier to install, but offers a lower STC rating.

U-Channel Clip Angle
This traditional assembly accommodates the deflection of floor beams or floor decks
at the head of wall. The single-deep leg track assembly requires 1-1/2" cold-rolled
channel (CHN) and 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" 16-gauge (EasyClip™ U-Series™) clip angles installed
continuously throughout the uppermost punch-outs to align the studs vertically
within the plane of the wall. Deflection track details must be designed for the specific
conditions of a building to accommodate the required deflection and end reactions of
the studs. Deflection tracks cannot be used in axial load-bearing stud conditions or
above continuous window spandrels.

and axial loads. Block and
strapping is typically used
when wall studs exceed
6". U-Channel or the
Spazzer® bar does not
provide sufficient bracing
for members wider than
6". Both stud flanges must
be attached to top and bottom runner flanges to provide proper
end support. Floor and ceiling runners must also be anchored
securely to the structure. To utilize the stud’s load carrying
capacity fully, horizontal bracing must be installed at proper
intervals.
Lateral bracing consists of a field-cut stud or track for solid blocking
and steel strap bracing on both flanges of the studs. Solid blocking
is placed at each end of the wall, adjacent to wall openings and 8'
O.C. maximum. The blocking is attached to each adjacent stud via
EasyClip™ E- or S- Series™ clips, or when a track is used, the flanges
are cut, the web bent and a minimum 4" overlap is used to secure
the track block to the studs. Strap bracing, 2" wide and 20-gauge
(33 mil) minimum, is fastened to each solid block and stud flange.

Dietrich™ heavy-duty
furring channel is a high-
performance hat-shaped
framing component used
in ceiling, exterior wall and roof
applications. In ceiling applications, heavy-duty furring
is tie-wired or mechanically fastened to bar joists, other roof or floor framing.
Gypsum wallboard is secured to the furring. In roof applications, heavy-gauge
furring is used as purlins to provide connection points for roof sheathing.

Dietrich™ C-Joist components provide an economical, lightweight alternative to open web trusses, bar
joists, engineered lumber, cast-in-place or hollow core floor assemblies. Depending on loads and spans,
C-Joists are typically spaced at 12", 16", 19.2" or 24" on-center spacing. Structural track (TSB), usually
in the same gauge as the joist, is used as rim or band enclosures. Joist to girder attachments are
normally supported with joist hangers, EasyClip™ E-Series™ or S-Series™ support clips. Web stiffeners
may be required at supports and other point loads. Solid blocking and strap bridging is required to
properly brace the floor assembly.
Consult Dietrich’s Technical Design Guide for physical and structural properties, span charts and
load tables.

Dietrich™ 120/135˚ corner or splayed bead is used to finish off angle interior corners
from 120–135˚. Designed to provide straight, rust-proof, dent-resistant corners, the
flexibility of vinyl splay bead allows a flush fit on many unusual outside wallboard
intersections. Multiple perforations along the 1-1/4" flanges enhance joint compound
bonding. Easy to apply, this vinyl trim can be nailed, stapled or attached with a high-
tack spray adhesive. Vinyl beads are easily cut with snips, utility knife or scissors
without distorting the profile.

Goldline* paper-faced

able in a wide variety of
profiles. The 90˚ outside that demand paper-faced
corners have a number
of different metal and
corner bead. Dietrich’s Goldline®
■ Substantially reduces joint compound consumption and eliminates one finish coat.
■ Does not require mechanical fastening (no nails, staples, screws or crimps).
■ Impervious to “scuffing” and “fluffing-up.”
■ Will not be damaged by sanding.
■ Superior adhesion, bonding and paintability.
■ Does not require nose coating.
Standard Leg
Goldline* paper-faced tape-on beads combine galvanized metal corner and edge protection
with high-grade paper tape to provide cost-effective, problem-free outside drywall corner
finishing. Paper-faced beads are available in a number of different widths to suit most
wallboard applications. Wider flange beads are used to cover imperfect corners, while
shorter flanges are used to achieve maximum efficiency.
Paper-faced beads virtually eliminate corner cracks, edge chips and nail pops. These beads
are applied using joint compound that embeds the paper bead to the wallboard paper. No
mechanical fasteners like nails, screws, staples or crimps are used. Although paper-faced beads
do cost more compared to traditional metal and vinyl, they provide reduced labor and materials
by reducing the amount of joint compound needed and also eliminate one pass of finishing.

Dietrich™ F.H.A.7. foundation weep screed protects the stop edges of stucco and exterior
insulated finish system materials at the sill plate. It’s commonly referred to as F.H.A. Screed
because it meets all pertinent F.H.A. requirements as part of a drainage system for exterior
stucco applications. The 3-1/2" nailing flange serves as a straight-edge stop at the sill plate line
and flashing when water-resistant paper or paper-backed lath is installed over the flange.
The bottom of the vertical nailing flange must terminate at or below the bottom of the sill
plate or the bottom of the shear panel. This will ensure a tight connection between the
bottom flange of the weep screed and the foundation. Bonding holes are punched in the 7/8"
or 1-3/8" V-grounds to enable keying. The weeping occurs along the surface of the angular
bead. Also available without bonding holes and in 28 gauge (FHAE) for non-code work.
The Uniform Building Code (UBC)* requires that all foundation screeds have a 3-1/2"
nailing flange, weep holes and a minimum thickness of 26-gauge steel.

■ Used in conjunction with polystyrene or foam insulation board.
■ Offers exacting grounds and protective weeps.
■ Resists corrosion.
J Weep
Dietrich™ 1-3/8" J-weep low-back is commonly used as a stop around door and window openings or in areas where stucco or EIFS
terminations abut dissimilar wall types. Dietrich™ 1-3/8" J-weep low-back is nail, screw or staple-attached to the frame or sheathing,
then foam insulation, cement board or metal lath can be installed over it. In any case, the protruding ridge of the metal must extend
beyond the plane of overlaid materials to serve as a ground for the stucco or EIFS application. Installed in conjunction with 1" rigid
insulation associated with one-coat plaster stucco systems, the 1-3/8" ground provides proper depth for plaster keying. Galvanized
for corrosion protection, it also is available with weep holes ( JWLB).
1-3/8" J-Weep with a 2" nailing flange should not be used as a foundation weep screed for three-coat stucco applications.
This casing or plaster stop bead should only be used on approved one-coat systems.
The Uniform Building Code (UBC)* requires that all weep screeds have a 3-1/2" nailing flange, weep holes and a minimum
thickness of 26-gauge steel. This product does not conform to code-required work if used as a foundation weep.

3/8" High Rib Lath (LAR) (K)*
Dietrich™ 3/8" high rib lath is the most rigid of all laths and by wire tying lath back to back with ribs running
provides the added support required when framing is more perpendicular to each other. Plaster can then be applied
than 16" O.C. but does not exceed 24" O.C. It is commonly to form a wall 2" thick.
