La Conner storms back in
Majeske
7th inning to beat DeSales
takes home
discus title

Anacortes junior
sets season best
TAC O M A N i c k
Majeske came through
Saturday when it mattered
most.
The Anacortes junior
threw a season-best to win
the boys discus title at the
Class 2A State Track and
Field Championships.
Its great, said Majeske,
a first-time
state meet
competitor.
Ive been
preparing
for it for a
long time.
Majeske
won with
a mark of
165 feet, 7
Majeske
inches.
That was
seven inches better than his
previous season-best the
week before at the Northwest 2A District championships and was 4 feet, 6
inches better than that of
state runner-up Troy Martin
of Port Angeles.
That state title was a matter of throwing well at the
right time.
Weve been working on
it to get me peaking right at
state, Majeske said. I was
trying to hit 170 to break
my record, but I had no luck
with that. Im pretty satisfied with today, though.
Majeske went into the
meet with the top qualifying
mark, but still was an underdog to Martin.
The senior had a personal-best of 175-8 it came
this season and had four
times this year been at 1727 or better. Majeskes personal-best is 169-9.
Hes usually 10 feet farther, Majeske said of Martin. I was really worried.
Martin threw 161-1 on his
next to last attempt to take
the lead from Majeske, then
said to Majeske, Got you
now, champ.
That only fired up the
Anacortes thrower.
It kind of got me excited, Majeske said. It got me
a little more competitive.
So on his next to last
throw, Majeske threw 165-7
to regain the lead.
Majeske wanted a personal-best at the state meet.
That will have to come
another day.
Its a bit of a disappointment, Majeske said. Ive
been working for that PR so
its a little unsettling. Next
year I think Ill be putting
that 170 away.

YAKIMA Rallies dont get much

bigger than the one the La Conner baseball team staged Saturday at Parker
Field.
The Braves stormed back in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat DeSales
5-4 in the third-place game of the Class
2A State Tournament.
You cant put a better cap on a season
than that, Braves first baseman Tyler
Howlett said.
La Conner coach Jeremiah LeSourd
had a wide smile on his face after his
team was awarded its trophy.
This game had its ups and downs, he

said. But all is well that ends well. Our

goal was to get here, play well and place
(in the tournament) and thats what we
accomplished. I couldnt be any prouder
of this team and especially of this group
of seniors. This group was freshmen when
I started coaching here. They are always
going to be special.
La Conner trailed 4-2 after the Irish
broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the sixth
inning.
I was really beginning to lose control, La Conner pitcher Garrett Wilbur
said. I couldnt hit my spots and I was
leaving the ball over the middle of the
plate.
Wilbur, however, had enough left in
the tank to end the Irishs sixth inning,
Scott Terrell / Skagit Valley Herald
then pitched a scoreless seventh.
So the Braves were facing a two-run La Conners Tyler Howlett jumps into the arms of Wil

James after scoring the winning run in the bottom of

YAKIMA Burlington-Edison coach John Thurmond can no

longer boast that the 1989 state
runner-up squad he and assistant
coach Andy Hanson played on

was the best team in school history.

That moniker now belongs
to the 2011 team that defeated
Sehome 7-0 Saturday at County
Stadium to claim the schools first
state baseball championship.
Its something special, Thurmond said after watching his
players hoist the championship
trophy above their heads. Coach
Hanson and I have been teasing

them all year that we played on

the best Tiger team ever.
Well, tonight I told them that
they were the best.
Thurmond said he thought this
team had a chance to be good.
But he also understood what it
takes to claim a state title.
You have to have so many
breaks, he said. Things have to
