Covent Garden is one of the most popular
parts of London. Tourists and Londoners, adults

collect money - but most people throw money into
the hat! The performers can keep all the money.

Whales are sea-living mammals. They
therefore breathe air but cannot survive on land.
Some species are very large indeed and the blue
whale, which can exceed 30 m in length, is the
largest animal to have lived on earth: Superficially,
the whale looks like a fish, but there are important
differences in its external structure: its tail consists
of a pair of broad, flat, horizontal paddles (the tail
of a fish is vertical) and it has a single nostril on
top of its large, broad head. The skin is smooth and
shiny and beneath it lies a layer of fat (blubber).
This is up to 30 cm in thickness and serves to
converse heat and body fluids.

The Legend of Surabaya

A long time ago in East Java there were two

strong animals, Sura and Baya. Sura was a shark
and Baya was a crocodile. They lived in a sea.
Actually, they were friends. But when they were
hungry, they were very greedy.
On one hot day, Sura and Baya were looking
for some food. Suddenly, Baya saw a goat.
"Yummy, this is my lunch," said Baya. "No way!
This is my lunch. You are greedy !
I have not eaten for two days!" said Sura.
Then Sura and Baya fought as usual. After several
hours, they were very tired. Sura had a plan to stop
their bad habit. "I'm tired of fighting, Baya," said
Sura. "Me too. What should we do to stop
fighting? Do you have any idea?" asked Baya.
"Yes, I do. Let's share our territory. I live in the
water, so I look for food in the sea.

REOG PONOROGO

Reog Ponorogo is a very spectacular dance.

Dancers wear bright, colorful costumes and are
accompanied by gamelan music. The dancers
always perform it out in the open are such as in a
town square. Reog dates back to the Hindu period
in East Java. The story is related to the legend of
Ponorogo Kingdom about 70 km south east of

Solo.
The central figure of this dance is the Lion
King - Singa barong. The dancer wears a mask of
the lion and carries a large peacock feather fan on
top of the mask. The mask is called Topeng Dadak
Merak. It can weigh up to 50 kg. The dancer has to
use his teeth to hold the mask from inside the
mask. A strong set of teeth and a strong neck are
essential. Sometimes he has to demonstrate his
skill and strength by carrying another masked
dancer on top of him and still dance with energetic
and amazing movements.
Another important characteristic is Bujangga
Anom. Together with Singa Barong they are
accompanied by one or more masked clowns or
acrobats. There are also a number of hobby horse
dancers, who are said to represent the troops of
Bujangga Anom. One of the unique features of the
Reog dance is that the hobby horse dancers are
young boys dressed as women.

Last autumn, I was in India during Diwali, the
"Festival of Lights", which takes place every year
to celebrate the victory of good over evil. This
festival lasts for five days and is held at the end of
October or in the first week of November.
Preparations began weeks before the event.
People cleaned their homes and painted wonderful
designs called rangolis on the walls and floors.
They bought beautiful new clothes and jewelry to
wear during the festival. Women made delicious
sweets which were better than any others I have
ever tasted.
During the five days of Diwali, every home
and temple was decorated, inside and outside, with
lovely clay lamps and colourful candles. After
dark, the whole neighbourhood glittered with
thousands of tiny lights, as though in a fairy tale.
Excited children set off firecrackers, and at first, I
was frightened by the loud bangs, but the
spectacular display was so fascinating that I soon
joined in the spirit of celebration.

A rabbit once lived in a forest with a lion. The

Avian Influenza is an infection caused by

Avian (bird) influenza (flu) viruses. These occur
naturally among birds. Wild birds worldwide carry
the viruses in their intestines, but usually do not
get sick from them. However, avian influenza is
very contagious among birds and can make some
domesticated birds, including chickens, ducks and
turkeys, very sick and kill them.
Infected birds shed influenza virus in their
saliva, nasal secretions and feces. Susceptible birds
become infected when they have contact with
contaminated secretions or excretions from
infected birds. Domesticated birds may contact
with surfaces ( such as dirt or cages) or materials
such as water or food ) that have been
contaminated.
Infected with avian influenza viruses in
domestic poultry causes two main forms of
diseases that are distinguished by low and high
extremes of virulence. The low pathogenic form
may go undetected and usually causes only maid
symptoms (such as ruffle feathers and a drop in
reproduction. However, the highly pathogenic
form spreads more rapidly through flocks of
poultry. This form may cause disease that affects
multiple internal organs and has a mortality rate
that can reach 90-100% often within 48 hours.

Jellyfish are not really fish. They are
invertebrate animals. This means that unlike fish
or people, they have no backbones. In fact, they
have no bones at all.
Jellyfish have stomachs and mouths, but no
heads. They have nervous systems for sensing the
world around them, but no brains. They are made
almost entirely of water, which is why you can
look through them.
Some jellyfish can glow in darkness by
making their own light. The light is made by a
chemical reaction inside the jellyfish. Scientists
believe jellyfish glow for several reasons. For
example, they may glow to scare away predators
or to attract animals they like to eat.
Most jellyfish live in salt water, apart from a
few types that live in fresh water. Jellyfish are
found in oceans and seas all over the world. They
live in warm, tropical seas and in icy waters near
the North and South poles.
