BIM: Exchange structural model or analysis model
Two possible approaches for the model exchange between CAD & CAE software 1. Exchanging the analysis model 2. Exchanging the structural model (=Reference model) 1. Analysis model historical first approach Only possible if the CAD s/w supports an analysis model: Tekla, Revit The CAE s/w must use proprietary links and maintain them The user of the CAD s/w creates the analysis model The analysis model is sent back and forth 2. Structural model current approach, Open BIM Based on IFC format ISO standard For all CAD s/w supporting IFC: Allplan, ArchiCAD, Vectorworks, Revit, Tekla, Bocad, DDS CAD, etc. Developers focus on supporting 1 quality format, IFC The draftsman focuses on his model, the engineer focuses on the CAE model The reference model is sent back and forth

We became aware very quickly that
the 3D team was ahead of the 2D
team The images and results from the 3D model were noticeably quicker and more accurate The 3D images were conveying the design better We took the decision to stop the 2D
team and apply all resources to 3D
this then delivered the planning drawings via the model
Did the contractor want IFC? Not really, they wanted native file format but it soon became obvious there were three authoring platforms in the team. Common Exchange IFC Luck? Learn?
