Operation Noah
From 1959 to 1962 the world stood in awe as
Rupert Fothergill and his men created by history
by embarking in the worlds biggest animal
rescue dubbed Operation Noah after the biblical
Noah. As the wall was finished receding waters
caused animals to be stranded on mountain tops
that were eventually drowned by the water. A
total of 4,914 animals were rescued.

venue offering a challenge to the fanatical
racing sailor and safety to the easy going
cruising family. Most people prefer the cool
and sunny winter months of April to
September, although many sailing enthusiasits
opt for stronger weather. The lake is divided
into 3 basins Kariba, Sengwa and Binga Basin.
The most popular sailing cruisers are light
weight, high performance vessels with

from the Sleeping Pool, but all those so far explored lead back into
the Pool. Near the end of the Dark Cave is a small cavern
accessible only to diver known as the Blind Cave. A second one
connects with the Sleeping Pool 58 metres below the surface and
the third one is yet to be fully explored.
The Caves are composed mainly of the sunlit "Sleeping Pool" and
the artificially lit Dark Cave. The Sleeping Pool 46 metres below
the ground level is accessible in two ways:
1.
Through the main entrance with an inclined passage,
where the view of the water has been compared to the famous Blue
Grotto of Capri
2.
Through the Dark Cave, which leads down steps and
along a narrow passage to a point just above the water at the far
side of the Sleeping Pool.
The exit from the Dark Cave is demanding, as the steps are very
steep. Therefore, less agile visitors would be well advised to avoid
this latter option. It seems probable that further caves remain to be
discovered. Research suggests that the water in the cave is
connected to an even bigger body of water in view of the fact that
the temperature in the Sleeping Pool never varies from 22 degrees
Celsius. Excavations in and near the Caves have revealed that
people have stayed around the area from early times. Pottery and
human remains were unearthed from the area which radio-carbon
dated around AD 650.
The Environs of the Caves
Although Chinhoyi Caves Recreational Park covers a large area
only 20 acres of it in the vicinity of the actual Caves are used by
the public. The remainder of the Park is largely taken up with
dolomite mining claims and wooded scrubland.
The Flora and Fauna
The Park's flora is made up largely of indigenous species and a
few exotics. In the indigenous group, there are: Mukwa
(pterocarpus angolencis), Cape Fig (ficus capensis), Combretum
species, Terminalia species, Msasa (brachystegia), Violet tree
(securidaca longipediculata), Yellow wood (monotas glaber) and
Pink Jacaranda (stereospermum).
Although birds are not numerous, there is a wide variety of
species, especially during the dry months of winter. The Park's bird
diversity includes the Arnot's Chat, Angola Rock Thrush, Mocking
Chat, Large Striped Pipit, Woodpecker species, Black Tit,
Redwing Starling, Batis, Flycatcher, Penduline Tit, Glossy
Starling, Bat Hawk, Tree Creeper, Familiar Chat, Paradise
Flycatcher and other species.
There are virtually no large animals in the Park. However,
monkeys, baboons, bushpigs and rock hares can occasionally be
sighted
FACILITIES
The Picnic sites and camp sites are serviced by three ablution
blocks with hot and cold water, baths, toilets and showers.
28
Birds
Mana is also a very special place for birds: fish eagles and many
species of stork, heron and other water-based fowl are common,
scarlet carmine bee-eaters visit in the dry months to nest in
colonies in the river banks, and rare treats include the elusive Pels
Fishing Owl and the African Skimmer, which nests on sandbanks
mid-river.
A wilderness experience
Mana Pools prides itself on offering visitors a wilderness
experience par excellence. Accommodation areas are unfenced and
visitors should be aware that wildlife wanders freely through. It is
one of the few National Parks where visitors are allowed to walk at
their own risk. While this is welcomed by savvy enthusiasts with
plenty of bush experience, it is advisable for visitors to be
accompanied by an armed and knowledgeable professional guide
or a National Parks ranger.
Nature-based activities
In line with the high quality of the wilderness experience offered
in this park, activities in Mana Pools are exclusively nature-based:
day-long or extended canoe trips down the Zambezi River,
walking, hiking, game viewing, bird watching and, at night,
studying the stars in an incredibly clear sky. Limited fishing is
allowed, but only from the land. There are no boat launching
facilities and motor-boats are not permitted on the Mana Pools
river frontage because of noise, pollution and wave action
disturbing the wilderness qualities of the park. Near Chitake
Spring in the south of the park, remains of dinosaur skeletons have
recently been found embedded in deep layers of rock exposed in
the eroded bank of a nearby river. These are being investigated by
specialists.
A Respect the Wild Code of Conduct for visitors to Mana Pools
and other wild areas is displayed at accommodation points
throughout the park and visitors are advised to take heed of its
advice to get the best out of their wild experience.
Specific behavioural guidelines are also available for visitors to
sensitive areas like Chitake Spring.
Access and accommodation
Access to this remote park is by air charter and 4x4 only. There are
no shops and mobile phone network coverage is very limited.
Accommodation is restricted to a handful of safari lodges, and
eco-friendly tented or mobile camps as well as self-catering Parks
chalets. Camping on the banks of the Zambezi river is a feature of
the Mana experience. There is the large and attractive Parks public
campsite at Nyamepi, with shower and toilet blocks or several
remote wilderness campsites which can be booked for sole use,
dotted along the river with basic "long-drop" facilities. Entry to the
park is strictly controlled by the National Parks Authority and prior
booking is essential, either through an agent or operator or through
the Authority itself.
29
Facilities
Tourist facilities include lodges, a communal campsite with
ablution facilities and exclusive campsites where the visitor can be
alone.

There are 5 lodges in the Park, all located along the Zambezi
River. There are 2 large lodges situated a short distance upstream

has 2 bedrooms with 2 beds each, a shower and toilet and seating
areas outside near the Zambezi River. The kitchen is supplied with

laundry basins. Visitors can buy firewood at the reception office,
and each campsite has a braai area. This camping ground has 30
