Torquey and efficient TFSI and TDI engines are just waiting to get started.
A sporty automatic transmission is also available for several engines: the
7-speed S tronic changes gear in the 1.4 TFSI 90 kW, 103 kW and 136 kW,
and in the 1.6 TDI 66 kW with hardly any perceptible interruption in the
power flow. Dynamic suspension, sporty, direct steering and ESC with
electronic axle-differential lock are other outstanding accompanying features.

Audi ultra on the podium: the Audi R18 ultra
Audi ultra:
Every gram less extends the lead.
Audi ultra, the pioneering lightweight technology

from Audi, is more than just the sum of its
individual components. It combines innovative
materials, intelligent design principles and
production processes that use resources sparingly
into an overall concept. Many Audi ultra lightweight measures have already been implemented
in the Audi A1 and A1 Sportback.
That starts with the body itself. The steel shell
design of the Audi A1 and A1 Sportback combines
low weight with high rigidity. The design uses
only as much material as necessary in the

respectively right places. The crash management
system in the front of the vehicle, for instance, is
made of aluminium.
Drive technologies such as direct fuel injection
and turbocharging have made Audi engines more
and more powerful. The modern TDI and TFSI
engines in the A1 and A1 Sportback produce
more power from less displacement, making
them significantly lighter than the corresponding
engines used in earlier model series.
Each lightweight component has an effect on

other components, allowing their dimensions
to be reduced as well. The result is a continuous
development process towards less and less
weight and more and more efficiency. In figures:
a vehicle that weighs 100 kg less can save up to
0.3 litres of fuel per 100 km.
About weight reduction
The demands placed on modern vehicles are

contradictory. On the one hand, they must offer
enhanced performance and comfort, on the other
they need to be more economical and efficient.
Audi ultra resolves this conflict by examining each
and every component. We demand the highest
functionality combined with the lowest possible
weight. The result is an intelligent mix of materials
that even allows a reduction in engine size: lighter
vehicles no longer need a large engine to be agile.
Thus in 2012, for instance, both theAudi R18 e-tron
quattro and the Audi R18ultra drove to podium
finishes at Le Manswith a V6 engine, whereas their
victoriouspredecessor in 2010, the R15 TDI, had
featured a V10 engine.

And for what reason?
1.4 TFSI engine
Audi cylinder on demand in the TFSI

engine. When the full power of the
4cylinders is not needed in the low and
medium load range and when coasting,
cylinders 2 and 3 switch off automatically.
This means that neither is air taken in or
fuel injected nor is exhaust gas emitted.
As soon as you want a sportier drive, the
concentrated power of all of the cylinders
is available immediately.
In just a few seconds you will understand why.
The Audi A1 and A1 Sportback employ TFSI

technology. And the remarkable thing about it
is that it combines the advantages of FSI
efficiency and dynamism with a turbo charger,
which ensures even better power delivery.
The 1.2 TFSI engine with 63 kW of power has a
die-cast aluminium engine block with innovative,
cast iron liners and a maintenance-free toothed
chain drive. The lightweight pistons are lowfriction while the oil and cooling water circuits,
with dual-circuit cooling, ensure a high level of

efficiency. You will soon notice this from the
pleasantly low consumption, averaging just
5.1l/100 km, and the maximum torque of
160Nm, which is available from an engine
speed of just 1,500 rpm.
Audi A1 and Audi A1 Sportback to 203 km/h

with a torque of 200 Nm, likewise available
from 1,500 rpm. Its water-cooled intercooler is
integrated in the inlet manifold; this reduces the
volume of the charge air system and delivers
increased dynamism.
The sporty 1.4 TFSI engine with the optional

7-speed S tronic generates 90 kW and is clearly
designed for top performance combined with
economical fuel consumption. It powers the

intelligent Audi cylinder on demand technology.
Audi automatically deactivates 2 cylinders on
demand if the engine's full power is not needed
for more relaxed driving. The result: The engine

runs much more efficiently and fewer emissions
are released without a notable difference to the
driver.
For even more dynamic performance, the
1.4TFSI (136 kW) features a two-stage
turbocharging system. It accelerates both the
Audi A1 and the Audi A1 Sportback to 227 km/h
with a torque of 250 Nm from 2,000 rpm.

The piezo injectors open and close in

fractions of a millisecond and inject
fuel several times into the combustion
chamber at pressures of up to
1,600bar. In some cases, an injection
process can involve the injection of the
tiniest of amounts weighing less than
a thousandth of a gramme.
Pre-injection results in a gentle

combustion process and consequently
excellent combustion acoustics
and agreeable engine running
characteristics.
TDI
In other words: Where is the tank?
One in every two Audi cars sold today is a diesel.
What sounds perfectly normal now was cause for
huge excitement 20 years ago, when Audi
revolutionised the market with the first 2.5 TDI
engine. Since then, developments such as common
rail technology have made TDI even more efficient.
Injectors ensure the fuel is finely and precisely
distributed. Consequently, since the first TDI, the
engines have become more economical, whilst
specific output has increased. So it was only logical
that a diesel car should then enter the world of

motorsport. And successfully too: in 2006, Audi
was the first car maker to win the Le Mans
24 Hours with a diesel-powered race car, the
Audi R10 TDI and then went on to repeat this
victory several times over.
Two 1.6 l TDI engines with power outputs of
66 and 77 kW are employed in the Audi A1 and
A1 Sportback. The common rail injection system

has four injectors and is characterised by an

excellent balance of performance, driving comfort
and engine acoustics. The two engines with manual
transmission therefore consume an average of
3.8 l/100 km and emit 99 g CO/km. The 66 kW
engine is optionally available in a 7-speed S tronic
version and accelerates up to a top speed of
182 km/h. The 77 kW engine reaches 100 km/h in
10.5 seconds in the A1 and in 10.7 seconds in the
A1 Sportback, and has a top speed of 190 km/h.
A 2.0 engine with 105 kW rounds out the TDI

engine range in the Audi A1 and A1 Sportback.
Its maximum torque of 320 Nm is already available
with 1,750 rpm and remains constant at this high
level up to 2,500 rpm. This allows spontaneous
acceleration from any engine speed range. The
maximum speed of the 2.0 TDI is 217km/h. It
goes without saying that all the diesel engines fulfil
the EU5 emission standard.

We try to match up to our claim of Vorsprung
durch Technik in every aspect of an Audi for
example with the advanced optional MMI Multi
Media Interface. The MMI is used to control a
wide variety of media in the vehicle, as well as
the navigation system and other convenience
functions. In addition, you can use it to control
the optional services supported by Audi connect.
The hinged 6.5-inch colour display is located
above the control unit on the dashboard, as is the
case with the concert radio, and presents all the
information in a very attractive look and with
impressive clarity. This means a range of data is
always clearly in your view. When navigating with
the optional MMI navigation plus, you can choose

your preferred route to your destination from
three alternatives. The topographical colouring
and 3D map presentation option make the route
even clearer. In addition, interesting sights or
other locations you require, such as restaurants
or petrol stations, can be shown.
The system can be operated manually via the
MMI or by using the voice control system.
Bluetooth: The optional preparation for mobile

phone (Bluetooth) can be used as a hands-free
facility. The system automatically detects
devices which are connected and transfers your
address book or settings.
Car: For concert radio and above, this function

allows the direct control of driver assistance
systems, vehicle settings and service.
MMI navigation plus: The optional

infotainment system offers you a 3D map
view and a 3-dimensional display of famous
buildings and places of interest as well as
20 GB of hard drive memory to save your own
music.
Media: Access to external sources or to the

MMI navigation plus jukebox is controlled via
this menu.
Audi connect: All the services supported by

Audi connect can be used quickly and easily
with the MMI. The intuitive operation of the
MMI makes internet access extremely easy.

A1 Sportback unites sporty agility and superb
handling with a high level of comfort when driving.
The springs and dampers of the McPherson
front axle react immediately to the requirements
of the road. The direct steering ratio provides a
spontaneous response to every movement of the
steering wheel. The compound link rear suspension
with completely newly designed guide bearings
ensures precise cornering and excellent directional
stability. For you, this means high levels of
dynamic handling performance and comfort.

The electrohydraulic steering ensures the steering
assistance is matched to your driving speed.
A new development from the Audi engineers: the
targeted braking actions of the ESC with electronic
axle-differential lock shift the wheel torques and
thus improve traction, for example when cornering.
This not only enhances directional stability but
also gives you more precise, smoother handling.
The S tronic dual-clutch transmission available
upon request in the 1.4 TFSI variant with 90 kW

and 103 kW as well as in the 1.6 TDI with 66 kW
combines the comfort of an automatic with the
sportiness of a manual transmission by engaging
the next gear before you select it.There is hardly
any perceptible interruption in power flow as
you drive along. Changing gear is smooth and
spontaneous. The Audi A1 1.4 TFSI with 136kW
already features the S tronic as standard.

A more relaxed drive.
Vehicle safety at Audi focuses on people. This

means we develop anticipatory systems that
support you on your journey and that will help
you to avoid accidents where possible. This also
means that completely new tests sometimes
need to be developed to check the new
technologies. That's why we have designed a new
methodology called Virtual Test Drive. On a test
track, drivers can be shown virtual obstacles and
other vehicles via video goggles and, in this way,
many driving manoeuvres can be re-enacted

within a short space of time. One of these
supporting systems is the optional high-beam
assist. When the camera of the high-beam assist
detects other road users, the system switches
automatically from high beam to dipped beam.
The Electronic Stabilisation Control (ESC) ensures
greater directional stability. Full-size airbags with
thorax/pelvis airbags integrated into the driver
and front-passenger seats, along with head

airbags for all occupants, provide protection for
the interior. The ISOFIX child seat mounting on
the rear seats, the 3-point seat belts with belt
force limiters, seat belt tensioners at front and
seat belt reminder function for all seats,
including height adjustment for the front seats in
the A1Sportback, round off the safety features.

Classifications of tyre parameters
The following equipment is not available for the Audi A1 1.4 TFSI S tronic (119 g CO/km): panoramic
glass sunroof, 18-inch cast aluminium wheels, run-flat tyres and xenon plus including headlight
cleaning system.
The table shows the range of fuel efficiency, wet grip and exterior noise emission classes for the different tyre sizes
of the Audi A1 and A1 Sportback.
Tyre size
The figure given was calculated using the specified measuring procedure (current version of Directive
80/1269/EEC).
For the Ambition: cast aluminium wheels, size 7 J x 16 with 215/45 R 16 tyres.
Summer tyres
You will find specifications on the technical characteristics of tyres in the adjacent table.
Unladen vehicle weight includes driver (68 kg), 7 kg of luggage and fuel tank 90 % full, calculated in
accordance with the current version of EC Directive 92/21/EEC. Optional equipment may increase the
car's unladen weight and drag coefficient, whereupon the possible payload limit and the top speed
will be reduced accordingly.
For the Audi A1 Sportback, an increase in the gross vehicle weight is possible depending on the
equipment. For details and information on when this feature will be available, please contact your
Audi partner.
A vehicles fuel consumption and CO emissions do not just depend on how efficiently the vehicle
uses the fuel, but are also influenced by driving behaviour and other non-technical factors. CO is the
greenhouse gas primarily responsible for global warming.
We recommend using sulphur-free super unleaded RON 95 in accordance with DIN EN 228. If this
is not available, use sulphur-free regular unleaded RON 91 in accordance with DIN EN 228; power
output will be slightly reduced. Unleaded RON 95 fuel with a maximum ethanol content of
10 % (E10) can generally be used. Fuel consumption details refer to operation with RON 95 fuel in
accordance with 692/2008/EC.
The figures given were calculated using the specified measuring procedures. The figures do not refer
to one individual vehicle and do not form part of any offer, but rather should be used purely for
purposes of comparison between the different vehicle models.
The following equipment is not available for the Audi A1 Sportback 1.4 TFSI with 6-speed manual
transmission (109 g CO/km): panoramic glass sunroof and BOSE surround sound.
The following equipment is not available for the Audi A1 Sportback 1.4 TFSI with 7-speed S tronic
(109 g CO/km): panoramic glass sunroof, BOSE surround sound, 18-inch cast aluminium wheels and
run-flat tyres.
For information on when this feature will be available, please contact your Audi partner.
