Hello and welcome to the July edition of The

Mirfield Word. I hope you enjoyed reading the June
edition and taking advantage of all the reader offers

July looks to be very exciting in Mirfield with lots of
things to do locally. We have summer Fayres, table
top sales, childrens activities and a beer festival!
With the summer weather now upon us there are
also lots of family fun days planned locally including

forward to attending the first annual food festival at

Name: Chris Cullen

Head Chef: The Travellers Rest Upper Hopton
Qualifications and Experience: Huddersfield Technical
College, Worked in Italy, Austria and London as a patisserie
chef. Chris then took his passion for patisserie and set up his
own cake company, making beautiful wedding and occasion
cakes as well as cupcakes and delicious assortments of
biscuits. Chris and the entire travellers rest team have worked
incredibly hard to reach the standard they are at today. They are
one year on from the opening of the newly refurbished pub and
restaurant but still have the passion and drive to go further.

10 x Fresh Head on Tiger Prawns (supplied by Mirfield Seafoods)
2 x tsp fresh Garlic pure
2 x tsp fresh ginger pure

Glug of soya sauce,
Big pinch of finely chopped Chives,
Big pinch of finely chopped red chilli,

1/2 the juice of a lime,
Pinch of sea salt & pinch of cracked black pepper

Splash of extra virgin olive oil
Handful of fresh bean sprouts

Small handful of rocket
Crusty bread
Method
Place a pan of water on a high heat with a pinch of salt bring to the boil. Place the fresh tiger prawns
whole into the boiling water & cook for 5mins until bright pink, drain prawns & leave to one side. Place a
frying pan on high heat adding a splash of extra Virgin olive oil, once oil is hot add your ginger & garlic,
chives & chilli stir & toss the ingredients for 2-3 minutes until the smell makes your taste buds tingle. Now
add the cooked (whole) king prawns with a Glug of soya sauce & the juice of half a lime. Toss until the
king prawns are evenly covered in the sauce, leave for a few minutes to reduce until the sauce becomes
sticky. While the sauce is reducing in a smaller frying pan add a dash of extra virgin olive oil & fry off the
bean sprouts with a touch of sea salt & cracked black pepper this will take 2 minutes. Time to plate up stack the king prawns on your plate carefully placing the bean sprouts on top with your peppery rocket.
Some crusty bread and a glass of chilled white wine goes really well with this dish.

Mirfield Seafood is the major fresh fish
supplier in Mirfield and has been trading
for 6 years at Bankfield Business Park,
Mirfield.
With over 40 years experience,
Mirfield Seafoods has been supplying
restaurants and markets throughout the
North of England with high quality fresh
seafood over this period and is also
proud to supply local businesses such as
The Pear Tree,the Travellers Rest, the
Woolpack, and Red Brick Mill,amongst
others-with all their seafood-supplies. If
you have had the pleasure of dining at
any of these establishments and eaten
any fish or seafood it is more than likely
to have been supplied by them.
March 2015 saw developments to the
business when they decided to promote
sales to the public. You can visit Mirfield
Seafoods Tuesday through to Saturday
7am-12 noon and buy fresh seafood
at very competitive prices and of high
quality. The produce comes in on a daily
basis from several ports from around UK,
primarily from northeast England and
Scotland and the south Coast of England.
The Crabs And Lobsters are brought to
mirfield seafood directly from the port at
Bridlington on a daily basis both live and
dressed.
Mirfield Seafoods deal mainly with day
boats and receive that days catch the
following morning meaning they can
guarantee the freshest and highest
quality fish possible.
The Crab and Lobster is still alive when

brought to Mirfield Seafood and you
can choose to purchase these alive or
dressed a true testament in itself to how
fresh the produce is.
Mirfield Seafood pride themselves on
sustainability, quality and service. If you
would like something specific ordering,
please let the team know and they can
order this in for you fresh to be collected
the next day.
With the business being slightly hidden
away, many people did not know this
fantastic business existed until recently.
Mirfield Seafoods considered moving into
Mirfield Town Centre however decided
against this due to the lack of parking
available. We want to be completely
accessible to our customers, they can pull
up right outside the door and after they
have made a purchase, the fresh supplies
can be put straight into the car and taken
home quote Mirfield Seafoods. For
those without transport, orders can be
made on the telephone and delivered free
of charge to your home. (Free Delivery on
orders over 30.00)
Mirfield Seafood is keen to work alongside
local restaurants and eateries in Mirfield
and surrounding areas, and is proud to
be working alongside The Travellers Rest
on July 25th, for their first annual food
festival. There will be a BBQ available
with live demonstrations of seafood being
cooked, you will also be able to sample
the food available and place an order
whilst you are there.

Ingle since 2010 and during that time has
seen some spectacular changes.
Upon entering The Pear Tree, you will

notice the dcor to be very modern and

ales, wines, spirits and speciality coffees.
For those who appreciate the finer things

Although the bar itself is excellent, what
has really been the talk of the town and
beyond is the outstanding food served in

There is a full menu catering to all tastes

and requirements. Traditional English

chicken and steak pie are firm favourites,
however the specials board is something
to be admired. The head chef and
kitchen team at The Pear Tree are long
established and enjoys cooking all dishes

s I sit and write my first article

of Mirfield Musings, which
will take a lighter look at life
in Mirfield (the Star of the North), I am
engrossed with the goings on at FIFA.
Well I say that as I now have something
else to think about. I have just read the
Mirfield reporter (I actually found a story
about Mirfield) where apparently, in the
public toilets, the loo roll holders are too
small for the toilet rolls. What impressed
me more was the fact that it was on page
four of the paper. I noted that maybe we
might have to saw off the offending part
of the rolls to make them fit. I have visions
of several men from Kirklees with Hi Viz
Jackets descending on Mirfield to make
sure that they are correctly cut to size,
followed by the council health and safety
officer to ensure that they all comply to
European safety standards. I do hope
that if they arrive and they have a bit of
time they could perhaps nip up to Knowl
Park and finish off cutting the grass.
I also read that in the paper the premises

above Tesco are to be turned into a 14
bed accommodation. (I hope theres
going to be enough toilets in there as
were in danger of a paper shortage as
it is). Im hoping that the accommodation
is going to be as an over flow for the
house of resurrection, or more preferably
a hostel for the entrants of the Miss World

competition. But why do I think thats not
going to be the case. I suppose only time
will tell.
All these stories are in some way the
thing that makes Mirfield such a special
place and the place I now call home. I
recall arriving here form down south over
thirty years ago. It may seem a long time,
but not in Mirfield where I am still an in
comer. I recall arriving to stay with my
girlfriend at her parents. Bring something
back from your travels they told her. I
think they were surprised when it turned
out to be me.
I remember travelling by train from Leeds,
through Batley and Dewsbury where the
words, Englands dark satanic Mills
became reality, and as I looked at the
buildings as we approached Dewsbury, I
wondered what a Mungo was, mind you
I didnt know what a shoddy was either.
I then approached Mirfield (the Star of
the North) and it was here I was going to
make my life. Over the coming weeks I
hope to capture, in some ways, the lighter
side of Mirfield and its place in the world
as I see it.

t will soon be July and the annual search

of entertainment for children during the
school week holidays begins. Whether it
is something for a wet Monday afternoon
or a sunny Saturday, there are many
things to do around the area to suit many
preferences and budgets.
The big event of the summer holidays
in Mirfield must be Mirfield Show, which
this year is being held on Sunday 23rd
August at the Showground. Recent
awarded winner of the publicly-voted
My Mirfield Community and Business
Award, Mirfield Show has grown rapidly
since its re-introduction twenty years ago
- and now attracts visitors to the town
from all across the region and beyond.
One of the main attractions is that every
child can go to Mirfield Show and it cost
them absolutely nothing. It remains free
entrance for children, they can they can
bring along their own refreshments,
they can see a wide range of exciting
attractions across the showground, and
they can get involved with archery, play
on the bouncy slides, enjoy the music
stage, visit the animal displays, watch the
puppet shows, climb the climbing wall, or
join in the welly wanging all for free. Plus
with thousands of exhibits in hundreds
of classes and competitions including,
horses, dogs, rabbits, poultry, pigeons,
flowers, vegetables, cookery, handicrafts,
childrens games, family races, tripe
eating and banana eating, baby show,
build-a-scarecrow, creative writing, fancy
dress and the ever popular tug-of-war
there is something for everyone.
The summer also sees regular Open

Weekends run by the Safe Anchor Trust
with free boat trips running from Shepley
Marina throughout the day. The My
Mirfield Community and Business Award
finalists usually run trips lasting about an
hour with the children getting a chance
to steer the boats. While waiting for your
trip, or afterwards, you can also have a
snack in their cafe and watch their mini
railway at work.
There are also events that are more
adult-themed which can help you unwind
after a long day at work or entertaining
the children.
After the success of the last 2 years,
Mirfield Round Table are hosting their
3rd Annual Charity Beer Festival on
the weekend of 10th - 12th July 2015
at Mirfield Cricket Club. With cricket
available to watch in the daytime, and
bands to watch in the evening, theres
entertainment for everyone. Plus of
course there are a wide selection of real
ales and ciders to choose from including
the one which has been sponsored by My
Mirfield.
There are also many local fetes, festivals,
workshops and days out that are currently
being planned for the summer, and as My
Mirfield are notified of them, we will be
posting them on our Facebook page so
if you have something to shout about, or
want to know where you can go feel
free to post on our wall.

Mirfield Stags began May with their first

RFL Yorkshire Mens League Division
One defeat of the season.
Richard Silverwoods men slumped to
a 36-10 loss at Beverley, bringing their
100% start to the season to a screeching
halt. Tries from stand-off Jake Shaw and
winger Oliver Rounding were not enough
to prevent the early league-leaders
from suffering defeat on what was a
disappointing day for the newly-formed
side.
The Stags bounced back to winning ways
when they returned to Castle Hall the
following week. Centre Elliot Smith stole
the show with a six-minute hat-trick as the
hosts defeated Hull Wyke 34-26. Looseforward Wayne Wilson scored twice,
whilst scrum-half Robbie Hunter-Paul
and front-rower Ben Mather added further
tries. Smith was at it again the following
week, scoring a second successive hattrick as the Stags romped to a 56-10
mauling of Milford Marlins at Castle Hall.
A double for Ross Hayden and further
tries for Wilson, Mather, front-rower Kryss
Tominay, Shaw and Rounding completed
the ten-try demolition of the in-form
Marlins.
After a two-week break, the Stags returned
to action by travelling to local rivals Birstall
Victoria.The Stags left it late to record
a third consecutive victory, keeping up

the pressure on league leaders York
Acorn.Centre James Wilsons last gasp
try gave Hayden the chance to snatch
victory with the boot. The free-scoring
fullback duly delivered to hand the Stags
a dramatic win. Debutants Michael Piper
and Wayne Jowett and that man Hayden
also crossed in what was an enthralling
back-and-forth contest. The win sets up
a mouth-watering clash with promotionchasing rivals York Acorn this Sunday at
Castle Hall.
The 2nd placed Stags trail league-leaders
York by a single point and will be looking
to leap frog the early season pace setters
by handing them their first defeat of the
season.
Meanwhile, Mirfield Stags Academy
have found life a little more difficult in
RFL Yorkshire Mens League Division
Four. Paul Carlos side have suffered
three consecutive defeats to begin
their season. An opening day 34-6 loss
at home to Scarborough Pirates was
followed by a 32-18 defeat at Guiseley
Rangers. A trip to Stanley Rangers ended
in a 46-28 defeat, before the Academy
recorded their first win the following week
when they hosted Siddal A. Unfortunately
the Academy could not follow up their 4420 success next time out, falling 26-14 at
the hands of Garforth Tigers.
