Summary
A fourth generation family business
which has changed with the times,
but remained loyal to its Aylesbury
roots, customers and employees. The
business serves a market within 50
miles of Aylesbury and would like it
to remain that way. The companys
vision is to continue to understand
and service its local customer needs
and deliver the quality service for
which it is known and recognised
through many industry awards.
Location
Newly relocated from Aylesbury to
nearby Aston Clinton, in Bucks.

From brewer to wholesale

drinks distributor
Dayla started life as a brewery,
which the current MDs grandfather
sold after World War One. The family
then established a manufacturing
plant for soft drinks glass bottles
which were supplied to the shop
trade and could be returned and
re-used. With the advent of plastic
bottle manufacturing, the margins
diminished and manufacturing
stopped in 1995.

The family then re-positioned

the business, serving the pubs,
clubs and hotel business known
as ontrade and soon became
nominated soft drinks supplier to
Benskins, amongst others, as well
as supplying the Aylesbury Brewery
company. Dayla established itself
as a dedicated licensed trade
wholesaler and joined the National
Drinks Distributors (NDD), a
consortium of independent licensed
trade distributors.

Dayla

Dayla has grown from 1m

turnover in 1980 to 18m today.
It employs 80 staff and has a fleet
of 17 vehicles serving around
1,800 customers across the
Home Counties and the Thames
Valley, from Bedfordshire and
Northamptonshire to Oxfordshire
and Berkshire. Tim has plans to
grow the business to 40m in the
next few years, through organic
growth, and possibly through
acquisition, having acquired three
businesses in the last five years.
Tim is clear about his vision and how
he will achieve growth through
understanding local customer needs
and remaining a family business.
He sees fantastic opportunities to
grow, as the larger national brewers
examine the cost of serving their

customer base and minimum

thresholds for quantities of barrels
they are prepared to deliver, an
opportunity Dayla is well placed to
benefit from.
Following their relocation to Aston
Clinton, the proceeds from the sale
of their existing Aylesbury town
centre site could, in future, support
the companys strategic objectives.
They see themselves in the leisure
business, so have a variety of
options they might consider,
which range from a micro brewery
through to a hotel or retail operation
which would act as a flagship for
showcasing the range of products
on offer.

Keys to success
Remaining rooted to Aylesbury
The business has always been
Aylesbury based and the familys
intention is that this will remain
so. As Tim points out, his great
grandfather was a hotelier and
builder, his grandfather owned the
brewery and was previously a mayor
of Aylesbury in the 1950s. He is
now training his own son to be his
natural successor in the business.
Providing a local service,
knowing their customers and
the local market
Dayla provides a great service
and has made the necessary
investments in technology.
The business has grown in
a sustainable way, through
acquisition of companies that
complement its product offering
and by extending the offer to its
existing customer base.
By knowing the patch and
restricting its coverage to a 50
mile radius, Dayla really knows its
customers and can service and
anticipate demand and respond
efficiently to meet it.

Through collaboration across

the National Drinks Distributors
Consortium, Dayla is able to
co-operate with other partners to
get the products to the customer
in a cost effective way throughout
the UK.
What does being in Aylesbury
Vale offer the business?
The company has now
consolidated all its operations
under one roof in a building in
nearby Aston Clinton, Aylesbury
that was used for filming the TV
show Hotel Babylon. It not only
provides double the space and
room to accommodate all its
employees under one roof, its
even closer to the A41 to access
its customer base.
Dayla has also been able to
increase its warehousing space
and customise the building for
office space.
