Reflection on Underdevelopment of Philippines

Your country is poor! Have you encounter this statement slaps by someone in your
face? Or maybe you just felt this sometimes? Because to me, I have felt a twinge of insult rather
than of acceptance when I heard of the phrase. Yet, Im quite aware of the fact that Philippines
today is saddled with huge challenges on how to find a concrete strategy to cope up economic
depression but its not a valid reason to stay in the track and hang on it. Especially when our
country has full of resources.
As far as I remember, we are denoted with capacity of our country to succeed by means
of agriculture, manpower, and many more. Thus, when we have always possessed the potential
for stable economic growth, how we are denoted as underdeveloped?
Frankly, this situation did not appeal much to me before maybe because I thought its just
a part of culture as what I have learned in my Sociology subject. We, people tend to practice and
believe things thats not worthy. However, now I came across on my logical imagination to
answer my questions stated above. The following are my suggested reason why Philippines is
denoted as underdeveloped
First, the unequal power between countries since our country has been colonized for so
many times and never get out. Also, those multinational companies here in our country that was
accepted naturally not weighing the impact on our decision system. For instance, a very
important bill had to be passed, the government had to consult the investors first before making a

decision. We have lost our national identity and had mostly relied on what these companies offer
us. Our economy is highly dependent on them.
Second, improper use of natural resources. We provide the rich nations with natural
resources, cheap labor, and a destination for their technological industries that I think have made
their lives easier and enjoyable. For me, other country invest to us so they could gain money and
power.
Third, the drastic population density that leads to various implications like poverty which
is the main symptoms of having overpopulation and every countrys problem that almost all
cannot resolved. In effect, it makes rich get richer and poor get poorer because our natural
resources are exhausted but the wants and most especially the needs of Filipinos are not satisfy
by our government. This is where corruption comes in.
Philippines economy had been very unstable despite the advantages of the state. Our
country is endowed with natural resources but still remains to be left behind by other countries
that happened to be in the same spot long ago.
There are some causes why Philippines is not developing until now. But the main
reason of those things rely on our GOVERNMENT GOVERNANCE. As long as there is
rampant corruption from public officials, colonial mentality also blocks progression which
results from low market acceptance which forces the local firms to withdraw from doing
business, there will be no a DEVELOPED PHILIPPINES.
I hope that industrialization will come into view to our corrupt officials someday. We
have higher tax rate than Singapore but Philippines is left behind by Singapore in terms of

economic stability. All things possess by our country would be useless if theres no proper
governance of it. Every small personal gain to officials is a big loss of all Filipinos.
