Zidane, his reaction was
simply inexcusable.

Raymond Domenech's team had already lost Patrick Vieira

with a hamstring injury, so they could ill-afford to lose
Zidane under any circumstances, let alone after a piece of
violence he will struggle to ever justify.

France lost a talisman, a leader and a man who may have

won them the World Cup - and they even lost their most
reliable penalty taker in the shoot-out won by Italy's perfect
five.

So, Zidane was even denied the scant consolation of going

up to say his farewells on the podium with his France
colleagues, staying out of sight in shame.
It was the most inglorious end

Italy took advantage to claim victory in a final that was

entertaining but not a classic, and which may now be
remembered more for a moment of madness from an iconic
figure that will scar his career.

But France's ageing legs were powered forward by moments

of Thierry Henry inspiration after the break, despite the loss
of Vieira from midfield.

Italy survived and were faultless from the spot, whereas

David Trezeguet's strike against the bar sealed France's fate.

As Italy's World Cup winners celebrated with the trophy in

front of their fans, a selection of the country's serenades
played over the public address system.

Italy coach Marcello Lippi even lit up what looked like a large
tree trunk in celebration.

Deep in the bowels of this vast arena, a different tale was

unfolding in the France dressing room.

Zidane, the leader of this side who had confounded early

poor form to reach the final, was presumably offering his
explanations and apologies. It was not meant to end like this
for one of the game's legendary figures - sent from the
world's biggest stage in shame and into retirement.
Create awareness of human rights'

TIRUNELVELI: The media, which plays a vital role in preserving human rights, should
find the root causes of violations and devise ways and means to prevent abuses,
Vice-Chancellor of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University Cynthia Pandian has said.

Speaking at a national seminar on `Media and human rights reporting,' organised by

the Department of Communication of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University here on
Tuesday, she said the pivotal role of media was seen as an essential feedback
mechanism of a democratic system. It reflected the views of the society and
influenced the outcome and direction of debate.

It could influence government policies through editorial comments and response

from readers.

The media could inform its readers about developments within government policy
and it, through responsible reporting and analysis, assisted the setting of acceptable
standard of human rights practices within which the society endeavoured to operate.

"In this background, the media has a responsible role in educating the community
and catalyse social change. Media should create awareness of human rights by
relating them while reporting on violation of human rights and educating public on
human rights. Moreover, media should find solutions for human rights concerns
affecting millions of deprived, dispossessed and marginalized."

In this context, the media, besides bringing out human rights violations, should have
the responsibility to identify the root cause of these infringements while promoting
knowledge through providing information about human rights and finding ways and
means to prevent human rights abuses.

Delivering keynote address, Head, Sarojini Naidu School of Performing Arts,

University of Hyderabad, B.P. Sanjay, appealed to civil rights organisations to closely
work with the media in protecting human rights, preventing infringements, if any,
and creating awareness in the society in this connection to defend the deprived and
marginalised as human rights violations were on the rise in the global scenario.

He noted that the media should not lose its balance while reporting natural and
manmade disasters such as communal clashes as they would accentuate the
problem.

"Even while reporting issues pertaining to naxalites, the media should explore the
cause underneath it," he appealed.
