Match Report;
MARLINS GO BACK TO BACK

-----------------------------------------------Brisbane,QLD | The Townsville Marlins have won back to
back National Super league Championships with a dominant
27-10 victory over the Canberra Kookaburras.
Townsville worked hard to keep the game close
early but took control either side of halftime.
Deliberately choosing to defer possession until the
second half after winning the toss , the Marlins
intentions were clear that they wanted momentum to begin
the second half. Solid defence held the Kookaburra's deep
inside their own red zone. After a punt the Marlins took
possession at the Canberra 48 and Patrick Gill hooked up

with Brooke McDonnell a couple of times to get them to
within range for kicker Ngatau Graham to slot through a
47 yard field goal and a 10-7 halftime lead. Then on the
opening possession of the second half the Marlins really
took charge. 13 plays and 69 yards they drove the ball
and backup running back Hymel Sumanufegai caught a wsing
pass for the score. "We knew what happened two weeks ago"
said Townsville Coach Chris Simpson. "They ran us down
after starting well in the third. We wanted to be that
team and we were. It was the key moment of the match".
The two teams matched field goals before
Sumanufagai capped a game to remember when he ran in his
second. "Just to get the chance to play. That was
incredible" Sumanufagai said. He was playing due to
injury forcing out Greg Watene from the line up. Gill was
also solid, rarely under pressure and hitting his targets
with accuracy. He was also in command of the game and
made the right throws at the right times.
The Robinson Medal went to Receiver Brooke
McDonnell who caught 13 passes for 198 yards. He was
dangerous on flanker screens with his acceleration and
elusiveness causing trouble to defensive backs who too
often gave him far too much room. But McDonnell also ran
crisp deep routes and always gave his Quarterback a
target.
Canberra effectively lost the Grand Final when
these two teams met two weeks ago. Lost in that game was
Quarterback Ryan Picker who suffered a quad strain.
Without Picker the Kookaburra;s were two one dimensional
and the Marlins sent the house at stopping the run. They
limited Canberra to just 44 yards rushing and that stat
tells all. "We did not get the job done running the ball
today. We fought hard but we were not at our best" Coach
Nathan Richards said. Being diplomatic he argued against
the loss of Picker being a factor. "I thought we were
close to matching them in the passing game. But even with
Ryan in the line up we would have run the ball. We lloked
good early, scored a touchdown and on that drive we got
most of our rushing yards. Why we could not keep that up,
that I don't know". Canberra's only touchdown came off a
16 play drive that saw them gain 35 of their 44 yards on
the ground. Rusty Pettyborne crashed over from short
yardage to match the earlier score by Darcy Tupou who
came out of the back field and into space behind zone
coverage.
In the end Townsville can celebrate. They were
too good when it mattered most. "Great to be a part off.
Early on the pressure is there. Are you good enough? Is
your plan going to get it done? You just need to believe
in yourself" said Simpson. and for Canberra last year
they finished third, this year 2nd so does that mean a
title is on the way in 2016? "The experience was
invaluable for all of us. Yet I think you cannot just
bank on getting back to the Grand Final, Look what
happened to Brisbane this year" said Richards.
