INTRODUCTION.

Shanghumugham Beach lies 8km from Trivandrum city and the beach is
adjacent to the Thiruvananthapuram airport and Veli Tourist Village. The
beach provides fascinating views of the sunset and sunrise and provides a
refreshing holiday option for the local people.
The beach is visited by many tourists and the weekends are generally packed
with people. The tranquil and peaceful surroundings are ideal for relaxing
and spending a quiet time.
There is an old Indian Coffee house on the beach which provides fascinating
views of the sea. The Veli Tourist Village situated on the beach is an indoor
recreation club which has a huge statue of the Matsya Kanya or a mermaid.
There is also a traffic training park called Chacha Nehru Park for children
which teach basic traffic rules and a star shaped restaurant which is popular
among tourists

THEKKE KOTTARAM

A historical museum of Trivandrum city at South Palace called Thekke


Kottaramin Shangumugham is yet to begin. Earlier, the Society for
Protection of Cultural Heritage (SPOCH) was entrusted with the task of
preparing a detailed project plan for converting the Thekke Kottaram into a
museum.
In the proposed museum at Shangumugham, the history of Trivandrum
Corporation and information about the city which mentioned in the
travelogues of renowned travellers who visited the state are showcased.
From the office of SOPCH, it is learnt that its former chairman, the late
artist J Sasikumar, had prepared a detailed project report and submitted it
to the City Corporation.
A committee was formed for the revamp of the palace into a museum and
now the Corporation is engaged in maintenance work at the
palace. Officials at the engineering wing of the Corporation.
Officials say that steps are taken to go ahead with the plan for setting up the
museum. We have initiated the procedures for setting up the museum. The
ground floor of the palace will be maintained as an art gallery to conduct
painting exhibitions and some paintings will be put on display in the palace.
Steps have been initiated to buy some paintings for the purpose, said
Deputy Mayor G Happykumar.
In 2010, Trivandrum City Corporation renovated the Thekke Kottaram in
Shangumugham to its former glory. The palace also hosted a painting
exhibition during last year Onam. Thekke Kottaram was the guest house of
the royal family of erstwhile Travancore. The palace is as old as the Thai
kottaram (Mothers palace), which would make it about 400 year old. Now,
it serves as a heritage museum, exhibiting antique household articles and
curios.

JALAKANYAKA

The voluptious sunbathing Jalakanyaka (mermaid) at Shankumugham


Beach in Thiruvananthapuram was created using concrete, and is about 23m
(75) long.It was created by award-winning sculptor Kanayi Kunhiraman on
the beach in Thiruvananthapuram, close to the airport, in a park with other
large sculptures. It is by far the largest mermaid statue I have encountered
so far, and is probably Earths largest mermaid sculpture.

ARATTU MANDAPAM.

Shanghumugham beach is considered as the Arattukadavu of Sri


Ananthapadmanabhan - The presiding deity of the city. Thousands of
Hindus perform Bali Tharpanam during special occasions. Shanghu
mugham is the prime location for Ganesh Nimarjan at the time of Vinayaka
Chathurthi.On the Arattu day at Thiruvananthapuram, images of Lord
Padmanabhawamy, Lord Narasimha, and Lord Krishna are taken in
procession to the Laccadive Sea at Shanghumugham beach. His Highness
the former Maharaja of Travancore,Sri Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda
Varma, will lead the procession with the royal sword in hand, who will be
escorted by members of the Royal family, armed guards, temple authorities,

mounted police, and officers. After the ceremonial bath in Shanghumugham,


images are taken back in procession which marks the conclusion of the
festival.

CHILDRENS PARK.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Park of Traffic signs for children is situated here,
which is helpful for the children to understand the traffic rules while playing
in the park. The park also provides cycling facilities for small children.
The military airport of the Southern Air Command of the Indian Air Force is
situated at Shangumukham.

SHANGHUMUKHAM DEVI TEMPLE.


Shanghumukham Devi Temple is next to Beach And Lake Resort and is
located in Kerala, India. Shanghumukham Devi Temple has a length of 0.09
kilometres.

SHANGHUMUGHAM BEACH.

Considered to be the deity of Thiruvananthapuram - Shanghumugham


Beach is a city beach visited by tourists, who wish to relax and spend an
ideal evening here. White sand, serene atmosphere and cool breeze make this
place a perfect location for rejuvenating oneself.
This place has a lot to offer; you can explore the Star Fish Restaurant - the
one that provides good food, and is available with car parking facilities and
open air theatre. Also, there is an Indian Coffee House, located just across
the beach that serves as a vantage point for sunset. The list doesn't end here,
other highlights include The Mermaid, Nehru Park, Sree Chitra Art Gallery,
Napier Museum and many more. A place worth exploring!
