1. Howdidyouspendyourtimethisweek?Whatresponsibilitiesdidyouhave?
a. Myresponsibilitiesthisweekwereidenticaltothoseoflastweek.Itaughtthe
morningmeetingandtheentiretyoftheliteracyblockwiththeexceptionofthe
corelesson.Ispentalotoftimeafterschoolthisweekplanningmylessonsfor
thecomingweek,asIwillbetakingovertheentireliteracyblock,aswellas
scienceandsocialstudies.Alotofmytimewasconsumedbylearninghowto
plansmallgrouplessonssothattheyarealignedtoFASTprogressmonitoring.So
far,IdontlikeFAST.Itseemslikealotofextraworkforteachers,intheformof
weeklyprogressmonitoringwithnorealbenefittostudents,becauseoverhalfof
mystudentswereflaggedasdiscrepant,theygetpulledforinterventionforahalf
anhoureachdayand/orareplacedinagroupthatischosenbasedonabilitylevel
forsmallgroupinstruction.Ilikesmallgroup,butIalsoliketheideaofbeing
abletohaveflexiblegroupingbecausesoonerorlaterstudentsfigureoutthat
theyreintheloworhighgroupandIfeelthatrealizationimpactshowtheyview
themselvesaslearners.Agoodchunkofmytimethisweekwasalsospentin
internationalbaccalaureate(IB)meetingsandmockinterviewsasmyschool
preparesfortheirreview.TheIBstandardsaretoughtomeetandthathasaddeda
lotofstressforstaffschoolwide,becausetheywanttopassinspection.The
interviewingprocesswaswithapanelandalittleintense,butImgladIgottosit
inandheartheirquestionsbecauseIwillbeteachingbelltobellwhentheactual
IBcommitteecomesintoreviewtheschoolandinterviewteachers.
2. Whatwereyourmostsatisfyingexperiences?Whatwereyourmostchallenging
experiences?
a. MymostsatisfyingexperiencethisweekwassittinginonPsIEPreview
meeting.Igottomeethismotherandwasabletospeakwiththespecialistsinthe
schoolthatImbeginningtoknowbetter,suchasthespeechpathologist,social
worker,andleadinterventionist.Rightnow,therehasbeenalotofdramawith
Psassociateandkeepingherinourclassroomtoassisthim.Ivelearnedthat
witheachpositivegrowthmarkerhereaches,Piseligibleforlessandless
assistancefromhisassociate.Heisdoingfantastically,becausehehasthesupport
ofhisassociate,andwevenoticedthathestakenafewstepsbackasshesbeen
pulledwaymore.Iwasabletojumpinandprovideinputonwhatsortof
accommodationswemakeforPintheclassroom,wheremymentor(whowasput
onthespot)wasdrawingablank.IhopethattheaccommodationsIbroughtup
willallowPtokeephisminuteswithhisassociateotherwise;Imworriedhell
failtobesuccessfulinthegened.classroomenvironment.
b. Mymostchallengingexperiencewasteachingwhilethesmartboardwasbeing
workedon.Ourboardhasnotbeenworkinginteractivelyallyearandsomeone
fromthedistrictfinallycameininthemiddleofmywritinglessonthatrequired
useoftheELMOandboard.Iwasabletorollwiththepunchessotospeak,but
myadlibbedlessonwasnotasgoodaswhatIhadoriginallyplanned,which
mademefeelbadforthestudents.ThenexttimeImputinthatsituation,Ineed
torememberthatlessismoreandthat6yearoldscantalkaboutwritingone
sentenceformorethan15minutes.
3. Whataretheplansfortheupcomingweek?
a. Thiscomingweek,itisourbufferweekinbetweenunits.Ihavegottentoplan
everythingforthisweek,asidefrommath.Wewillbeworkingonreviewing
everythingwevelearnedthusfar,usingHalloweenandautumnthemed
resources.Imveryexcitedtoseemylessonsgointoplay,asIhaventreallyhad
muchfreedomtodosoyet.Itwasvalidatingtohavemyplansapprovedbymy
mentorandIhopethatmydeliveriesofthelessonsarealsouptopar.Atthis
point,though,Imfeelingprettygoodabouteverything.
