PHARMA SYSTEM
45-80-120 Models
INTRODUCTION
For many industrial and laboratory applications it
is necessary to have water that is highly pure
and that comes as close as possible to the ideal
H2O. To obtain such pure water, special
treatments are needed that are designed to
remove from the water all the substances that it
may contain in dispersed (suspended solids,
colloids, micro-organisms, etc.) or dissolved
(salts, molecules, ions) form.

connected to various uses: automatic analyzers,

operative machines, direct use faucets, etc. It is
able to produce treated water with resistivity > 5
M for 80% of the cycle and of about 1 M for
the remaining 20%. Technically it represents the
most complete range of what is available in
systems of this type. PHARMA is composed of a
primary section for reverse osmosis desalination
and a successive section for a refining
demineralization through mixed bed resins.
CHEMICO-PHYSICAL PRINCIPLES

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
PHARMA is a device that produces ultra-pure
water, designed and conceived to satisfy the
most demanding applications while providing a
simple but complete management of the system.
It brings together the characteristics of safety,
compactness, transportability and quietness that,
added to the constantly high quality of the water
produced, make this the ideal system for
advanced applications. PHARMA is easily

Ionic Exchange
The residual salts at the end of the reverse
osmosis process are dissociated in anionic
and cationic forms.

The cationic and anionic resins that are

contained in the mixed bed are able to remove
the residual ions that are present at the end of
the osmotic process according to the procedure
described below.
Cationic resins in acidic form (R-H) are used,
which are able to exchange their Hydrogen (H)
with the water's cation:
R-H + Na+ --------------> R-Na + H +
and anionic resins (R-OH), which are able to
exchange the oxhyhydrogen (OH) with the anion:
(R-OH) + Cl- -------------> R -Cl + OH These reactions, described for Sodium chloride,
occur as well with all other cations and anions
and, observing the results of the above reported
exchanges, one can see that water is produced:

for a correct, optimal and programmed use of
the system.

A reduced sized cabinet that is easily

transported.

Internal sound-proofing panels.

Simple hydraulic and electrical connections

for quick use.
Note: all the hydraulic components used in
PHARMA systems are made of materials
that resist to corrosion, that are suitable
for food and medical use and designed to
withstand, by a large margin, the normal
operation of the system.

In many systems demineralization is achieved by

percolating water first through a cationic resin
and then through the anionic one.

Note: PHARMA is conceived to reduce as much

as possible work interruptions due to
maintenance. Therefore it is equipped with

MB
columns
that

In the re-finishing phase, we have adopted

single-use resins, since they offer better
exchange characteristics compared to normal
regenerative resins, and they eliminate the
bother and costs associated with handling the
containers for periodic regeneration.
A device for partial recycling and timing provides
for continuous or intermittent use, always
maintaining the quality of product water at the
highest levels.

PHARMA has been conceived with criteria of

rationality and simplicity: given that the system is
to be fed with potable water, a pre-treatment
softening phase has been excluded since
practical and economic considerations favour the
use of replaceable membranes (whose average
life is in any event above 18 months).

DESCRIPTION

A second timer signals, with an acoustical and

visual alarm, when it is advisable to replace the
pre-filtration cartridges.
The quality of product water is constantly
monitored by a conductivity meter, which can
test either the purity of the treated water or of the
osmotic water.

PHARMA SYSTEM 45-80-120

M000-97 - Rev. 03 - 10/2007

COMPONENTS DESCRIPTION
(see Figures Nos 1 and 2)

a) Composite Pre-Filtration (3)

It is able to remove impurities that are not
dissolved such as sand, turbidity, oxidized
Iron, etc., with a filtration level of about 510 m. The activated carbon present in the
filter reduces Chlorine in the water as well as
pesticides, THM, micropollutants, etc.

MB Refill: because of practical and

economic considerations the MB columns
are replaceable as refills. In this way the
necessity of the premises regeneration is
eliminated, as well as the costs and
handling that regeneration at a specialized
facility involves. The refill containers are
an integral part of the system and can be
installed simply, economically and quickly.

e) Electronic Panel (25):

b) HP Pump (8)
The R.O. system high pressure pump is able
to provide 400 l/h with a P of 13-14 bar. It is
equipped with high pressure by-pass valve.
c) Osmotic Module (10 - 26)
The membrane is able, thanks to the high
pressure of the entering water, to remove
about 95% of dissolved salts in the feed
water. The lack of a pre-treatment softening
phase simplifies considerably the operation of
the system. It is necessary though to perform
a systematic control of the operative
parameters
to
ascertain
the
correct
functioning of the membrane. This will allow
for the best use of the osmotic membranes
(which should last for more than 18 months).
d) MB Demineralization (16-17)
Osmotic water, although highly pure, is not
always guaranteed to have the resistivity
qualities necessary for certain uses that
require ultra-pure water. It is therefore
necessary to employ mixed bed exchange
resins for a refining process. To this end two
important innovations have been installed in
the PHARMA:
-

Double MB: it allows one not to interrupt

the operation of the system because of
long and bothersome replacements of the
MB resins column. The electronic panel
advises in advance when the resins are
expiring. Through the touch control the
new MB column is activated, leaving in the
memory the signal to replace the expired
one.

M000-97 - Rev. 03 - 10/2007

Touch control type with a programmable

electronic card. It allows for the simplest and
complete management of the system. It is
equipped with a digital conductivity meter (4)
that can make two readings depending on the
option selected: either of the osmotic water
and then, releasing the key, of the
demineralized water. The programmable card
controls the following parameters:

Principles of Operation

When the plant is electrically powered, the

display shows:

The display shows RECIRCULATION 2 and

PHARMA stays in this state for 5 minutes after
which it goes onto PAUSE (shown on the
display).

PHARMA 45-80-120 Std by Culligan Italia .

Pressing OPERATE starts the STARTING cycle:
in this condition the solenoid valve SV 4 opens;
with a time lag of 5 seconds (time needed to
pressurize the system) the pressure switch PS(6) is inhibited for 5 seconds after starting the
pump P (8) to prevent intermittent starting. If on
re-enabling the pressure switch PS- the pressure
turns out to be insufficient, PHARMA goes into a
low-pressure alarm. The display will show
PRESSURE ALARM + beep.

This situation remains until with water being

required the minimum level is reached in the
tank (pressure switch will close the contact
PS+), PHARMA will then accordingly run the
RECIRCULATION 1 and then the SERVICE
phases.
The
quality
of
the
water
produced
(demineralized) is shown on the display during
the SERVICE phase, together with the MB in
service. MB service may be alternate by
pressing CHANGE touch (the display will show:

With sufficient pressure the pump assembly

stays running, supplying the module with water

Pressing MENU (ENT) the MB bottle previously
in stand-by will enter in service.

The display shows RECIRCULATION 1 and the

countdown in seconds of the relevant phase:
- The pump-motor unit P starts running and
supplies the module with pressurized water. At
the same time, the solenoid valve SV 3 is shut
for 30 seconds shown on the display thereby
making it possible to recirculate the osmotized
water on the module via the one-way valve
(23).
After the set time, the solenoid valve SV 3
opens and the water produced (desalinated) is
sent to the active mixed bed demineralizer (16
or 17) and to the service. The electric panel will
display:

DESCRIPTION OF THE CONTROL KEYPAD

When the keypad is used a beep signals the

SERVICE QUAL OK *** S.

Likewise, with each stop the plant partially
washes the module with osmotized water. If the
user requires no water, the "product" line is
pressurised and the Pressure switch PS +
stops the service.
PHARMA goes onto
standby with a last recirculation, following the
same procedure described in the initial module
washing phase.
