Pastors Corner
For those of you reading this in the online version, have a Happy Thanksgiving
with your family! If you're reading the print version after Thanksgiving, I pray it
was a good one for you and yours. Advent begins on Sunday, November 29,
and of course, just prior to that, the commercialism of Christmas cranks up big
time on Black Friday (and for the true diehards, late on Thanksgiving Day!).
Purchasing gifts online the Monday after Thanksgiving has become the tradition of Cyber Monday with much online shopping done and perhaps a little
less productivity at work.
I firmly believe God brings more meaning to our celebration of Christmas by
our purchasing less for our families and giving away more to those who need it
most. What if whatever we spent on our family and friends we also gave to
Jesus in the form of mission giving? No matter where we fall on the mission
giving spectrum at Christmas, I know we're all going to give a certain amount
of gifts to our own family, and that's a good thing.
With that in mind, I'd like to share with you a concept which got off to a rocky
start a few years ago, but now seems to have the kinks worked out of it.
Through the UMC Market, many of your purchases online can net you a discount, and you can also help your church in the process. It took me less than
ten minutes today. I went on to www.umcmarket.org, and registered my email
address and established a password. I watched a short video to orient myself
to the process, and then went through the brief and easy process to get a little
red shopping cart placed at the top of my browser.

Through the UMC Market website, I established my favorite shopping
sites, like an online camera store I've used in the past. All your favorites
will be on there: Lowes, Best Buy, Old Navy, etc. Literally, hundreds of
sites. Each of these retailers have established a percentage of the sale
they will give back to our church, and by "our church," I mean ESUMC.
Now, if I go on the Cameta Camera site and purchase a $300 lens, they
will donate 2% or $6 to our church. There are no extra steps involved
once it is set up. I make the purchase, and money is sent to our church
within 30 days. That $6 is not a huge amount, but multiply that by the hundreds in our congregation making online purchases, and you can see how
this could add up for us. There are also many coupon offers available for
users of UMC Market. It's as close to a "no brainer" as I've seen to help a
church financially! I encourage you to try it out, and if you have questions,
carefully read the FAQ section on the website.
Here's another quick thought, this time on giving. Tuesday, December 1 is
"Giving Tuesday," and our United Methodist Global Ministries and UM
Committee on Relief (UMCOR) are participating. Of course, we encourage you to support our own mission projects first (Faith Promise), but if

We have many opportunities to respond to Jesus love by showing that
love to others. Stephen Ministry is one
way our congregation shows love to
people who have a need for care. You
also have opportunities to show Jesus
love during the week. As you interact
with hurting people, ask yourself,
Could this person benefit from a Stephen Minister? Suggest that they
may want to consider the help of a
trained Stephen Minister. For further
information, contact Peggy Strack, 570

Members of ESUMC who are no longer
able to attend church, always enjoy hearing
from you! Cards and notes of encouragement may be sent to:

THANKS
I would like to thank Pastor Jim and
all members of my church family
who surrounded me with kindness
and offered prayers after my
daughter Emilys passing. The
members of FISH provided my
family and friends with a wonderful
reception after her funeral which
took such a big weight off my mind
during this very difficult time.
Pauline and Doug played beautiful
music at her service that offered
comfort to all those in sorrow. To
Maria, Anna, Peggy, Sue, Mrs.
Saunders and so many others who
sent me cards and grace, my heart
is filled with thanks for all of you. I
am truly blessed to be surrounded
by such compassion from my
brothers and sisters in Christ.
Regards,
Carla Silver

Church-Wide Study
January 10th - 31st
Classes to be held on Sundays
and throughout the week at
various times/places
Sign-ups begin Nov. 29th in
Oberholtzer Hall
Ive been fishing since I was a kid. My early experiences were deep sea
fishing on my dads boat. In later life Ive transitioned to fresh water fishing. The overriding principles are the same for wherever you fish. You
must have patience, study what the fish are feeding on and offer the bait/
lure into an area where the fish might be waiting. Isnt it the same for us
as a church family seeking to reach out to people in our community?
Shouldnt we know how to be intentionally inviting so that people will think
about coming back after a first time visit?
Starting on January 10th a church-wide study will be offered entitled
CATCH. The 4-week study is for small groups . It will give us some tips
on how to attract visitors, welcoming them into the life of our church and
help us become a more outwardly, rather than inwardly, focused church.
Sign-ups for the study will be in Oberholtzer Hall by the CATCH display.
Small groups will be meeting on Sunday as well as throughout the week
to accommodate various schedules. Please prayerfully consider signing
up for this short term study and become a fisher of people.
