Highly Regarded Experiences

Large landed estate, wide roads, beautiful houses and villas, cowboy look,
fair weather and hospitable people were the things that I want to describe
about Dallas, Texas. I dont know why, but, I loved that place. Though I
stayed for only few days, I enjoyed being there. It was February 4 when we
arrived in Dallas.
It was Thursday morning when we went to the Center for American and
International Law (CAIL). It is a nonprofit institution dedicated in improving
the quality of justice through education of lawyers and law enforcement
officials in the United States and throughout the world. We had a meeting
with Mr. Mark Smith, the Vice-president of the Center for American and
International Law. He explained to us how the institute provides continuing
education for lawyers and law enforcement. Ms. Jasmine Hunt, staff
assistant, shared some informations about the academy.
Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law was our next
appointment. At the university, Ms. Lisa Montes guided us towards the
Deans Office. At the Deans office, we discussed about the clinical program
of the university, their law school curriculum and their public service
program for law students.
Besides that, we had lunch together with some faculty members and law
students where various speakers talked to us. They shared how their
clinical programs were being conducted, how they promoted public service
and how the students participated in each programs and activities.
After the gathering and conversation with the students and professors at
SMU, the next institution that we visited was University of North Texas
located at the Main Street of Dallas. It was past 2pm when we met Ms.
Tricia Magel, director of marketing and communication. A short program
was prepared by the staff, and the first speaker was Dean Royal Furgeson,
and he introduced about the law school. Afterwards, Ms. Sheena Brooks,
assistant director of admission, shared some class facts and admissions in
the university. Then, Ms. Ellen Pryor lectured about the learning
environment, multiple assessments, lecture capture and curve.
After a few minutes of discussions, Ms. Cheryl Wattley elaborated the

purpose of Community engagement and experiential education. Lastly, Mr.
Eric Portfield, Ms. Dianna Howard, Ms. Jennifer Wondracek and Ms. Jessica
Haseltine expounded the importance of legal writing.
Even though it was a tiring day, I learned a lot and I acquired new
knowledges which inspires me to study hard and to help other people while
I am a student.
Oprah Winfrey once said, Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up
having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever
have enough.1
The following day, we met Atty. Florentino Ramirez, a volunteer with Global
North Texas, and he accompanied us throughout the day. On that day, we
were given a chance to interview the lawyers at the Public Defenders
Office, and the lawyers gave us ideas on how they perform their
responsibilities in providing the best legal defense to the indigent citizen of
Dallas County.
After a few hours of interviewing and exchanging ideas with the lawyers, we
travelled to the headquarters of the Dallas Bar Association. At the
headquarters, Atty. Robert Tobey outlined the requirements for continuing
legal education of licensed attorneys in the State of Texas, the work of the
State Bar Association and the Dallas Bar Association in providing ongoing
legal education for licensed attorneys, to enable them to meet those state
requirements.
What is more is that, we were given the opportunity to attend the
continuing legal education of lawyers; the speaker on that event was
Quentin Brogeon and he illustrated and got into details the subject of
Cross Examination: Truths and Myths.
In the afternoon, Mr. Mike Amis, Ms. Sherrie Abney and Mr. Lawrence R.
Maxwell Jr. gave us a brief overview about Alternative Dispute Resolution
and Collaborative law, how it was done and the advantages and value of
each. Under certain circumstances, unexpectedly, we received an honorary
citizenship certificate. We were so happy and we cannot explain our feelings
about that opportunity.

It was almost past 4pm when we returned to the hotel. I, Maam Cole and
Cayen went to the house of Mr. Bill Matthews in the evening. I appreciated
the warm welcome of his family and friends in his house. We had great time
together, we shared ideas and experiences. It was a pleasure to be invited
by Mr. Bill and to meet his friends. I admired the foods and how they
acknowledged us.
February 7 was the day that we are going to watch a rodeo show. It was my
first time and I was so excited because I am going to see a cowboy event. It
was Saturday and there were a lot of people who attended the show. I took
every moment to take pictures, tried there tacos and roamed around the
bazaar.
Not only that, but also, our guest Brent and his family spent some time in
the hotel. We got acquainted with Brent at Southern Methodist University
and he told us that his wife is a Filipina. He talked about his experiences in
the Philippines and how hospitable the Filipinos are. We ate together in the
hotel at the evening, and I will not forget the foods that they brought
because the meats, the rice and the barbecue were satisfying and delicious.
Being in Dallas, Texas was unforgettable. Law schools, offices, court house,
rodeo show, meaningful honorary citizenship certificate, the lawyers,
professors, law students and volunteers, lovable house of Sir Bill and his
family and friends, tasty foods, Brent and Maria and their babies, wide road
and Walmart were the people, places and happenings which I will value in
life.
