LESSON TITLE: A way with words. The Ideal Teacher
TIME: 50 minutes

FUNDAMENTAL INSTRUCTIONAL AIMS:


-to provide oral practice and to encourage conversation based on an
assigned topic;
-to encourage the students to look for information and bring their own
arguments in order to support their answers;
-to stimulate conversation, to create interest in the topic and to initiate
discussion;
-to give the students a chance to practise their listening, speaking and
writing skills
-to enrich vocabulary.

OPERATIONAL AIMS:
- to focus on vocabulary used to talk about what makes a good teacher;
- to get students talking about the qualities of a good teacher;
- to express opinions about the role of education in their lives and bring
arguments;
- to complete an exam - style listening task;
- to express opinions about the influence of new technology on childrens
learning of specific skills and general education for life.

TYPES OF INTERACTION: T Ss; S S (pair work);

MATERIALS
-blackboard;
-notebooks;
- video- projector;
- hand outs;
- textbook;
- CD.

ANTICIPATED PROBLEMS:
- Some students may not understand the text while listening and they may
need the tape script in order to do the task;
- Some students may be reluctant to speak and express their own points of
view.

The students are asked to watch a movie


about The qualities of a good teacher and
to pay attention to the words/adjectives that
describe a good teacher.

Productive stage - After they have written the words on their

notebooks, the students work in pairs and
make a list of at least four qualities of a
good teacher (e.g. makes the students work
hard; listens to students problems; knows
their subject very well; has a sense of
humour ) and rank them in order of
importance.
- The students discuss with the teacher the
questions about the qualities of a good
teacher and express their opinions about
judging the performance of a teacher and the
role of education in general.
(Exercise1 page 162).
Listening
The students are asked to complete an exam- 10
style listening task:
- read first the three extracts from page
162( exercise 2 ) and underline the
key words.
- - listen to three extracts: a radio
programme entitled My Favourite
Teacher, two young people talking
about a course the girl did and a
televised debate about technology and
education.
