Weve all seen a diamond. Each of them starts out as a chunk of low-value carbon,
about a billion years ago, deep within the earth where pressure and temperature are
extreme. Over time, the extreme pressure and temperature force the lump into a new
crystalline structure. A volcano or two later, the hard crystalline substance erupts to
the surface. And voil, a diamond is born that is within the reach of human mining
capabilities.
Likewise, changes in market dynamics have increased the pressure to be more
efficient for Intergraph Process, Power & Marine customers. As a result, our clients
are innovating their use of technology and driving new technology development to
make their own diamonds. These solutions are tougher, more valuable, and have more
clarity of purpose.
In this issue of Insight, we look at how some of our customers are altering their
strategies in this high pressure environment to work more efficiently. SmartPlant
Cloud is enabling a collaborative environment for engineering design and plant
operational processes to be seamlessly executed, regardless of end-user location (page
18). Kitanihon Shipbuilding who after an extensive evaluation exercise chose
Intergraph Smart 3D for new projects because of its advanced automation features
and seamless collaboration between design and fabrication (page 10). We look at how
SmartPlant Materials, SmartPlant Construction and GT STRUDL are streamlining
the building process for some of the worlds largest projects (page 12). And we
highlight how Intergraphs Technical User Forums (TUF) on LinkedIn facilitate highvalue networking and sharing of best practices for almost 20,000 users of Intergraph
products (page 14) in near real-time around the globe.
We also share the winners in the annual Golden Valve, Platinum Pipe and Drivers
of Success awards and the amazing images our customers create using our marketleading software (pages 24-29).
No one could predict the downturn in oil prices or how it would impact the oil and
gas industry, and likewise nobody can predict when the situation might change again.
However, we can improve our technology and how it is applied, by collaborating with
our customers to forge technology which really contributes to lasting improvements in
industry efficiency.
THAT is how PP&M partners with clients to make industry diamonds!

GS: Fundamentally, acquisitions bring strategic talent, relationships and technology to PP&M. Our largest acquisition of
the year, EcoSys, is the world leader in project controls software
and is growing fast in our core market of PP&M companies
despite the slowdown in project work. The EcoSys solution
helps clients by setting detailed expectations and creating
transparency of the progress and financial status of large capital projects. This visibility into cost performance is critically
important in the current market as our clients seek to improve
their efficiency, particularly for those who are implementing
Advanced Work Packaging (AWP) construction techniques.
EcoSys is not the only one offering this type of solutions, and
many companies use homegrown tools. However, EcoSys is the
most advanced and successful player in the project controls
market, and I am proud to have them as part of the Intergraph
and Hexagon family.

WORKING SMARTER
The traditional EPC/PMC decision to subcontract all steel construction activities (including detail design, manufacturing, shipping, and erection) to a single fabricator is unlikely to change in the
short term. However, innovative engineering software, such as Intergraph Smart 3D and SmartPlant solutions, revolutionize work
processes and secure efficiencies in two key ways:
Digital data-centric approach replaces traditional document-centric paper-based / file-based project execution
Integrated software environment enables all authorized
project stakeholders to access and reuse data across disciplines, departments, companies and IT borders
How it works
Traditional file-based project execution is time and cost intensive. It is also heavily reliant on manual, repetitive and error-prone
activities.
Digital project execution stores data - including graphics for 2D
and 3D modeling design and analysis activities - in a central automated database which enforces pre-defined design processes and
standards enables data reuse across disciplines, provides automated
version control and change management and ensures consistent

output quality.
This concept streamlines work processes and offers significant
benefits which are simply not possible with file-based execution.
Object correlation recognizes different 2D and 3D digital versions
of the same physical object to ensure design consistency, while
global work sharing enables multiple parties to work together in
real time, regardless of their geographical location.
Automation and data reuse eliminates valuable engineering
hours spent on non-value-adding tasks, and automated change
management and version control ensure timely propagation of
design changes to downstream work processes.

refinery designed by two EPC joint venture consortia, each working in five different countries, how do you ensure that all
parties have worked to achieve a complete,
correct, consistent design basis?
Peter Paul Pruijn, FDH Joint Venture
Information Manager at Fluor, recently
presented his companys experience of implementing SmartPlant Cloud to increase
productivity in just such a situation - a
joint venture, multi-billion dollar refinery
mega-project in the Middle East consisting of multiple partners in numerous locations. It was a requirement of the contract
that one SmartPIant Instrumentation and
SmartPlant Electrical (the other Intergraph software being employed) system
be delivered, and after significant consideration Intergraphs SmartPlant Cloud was
chosen.
In the Fluor example, it was a common
scenario that companies executed their
specific aspects of the project in their own
environments, meaning that several different systems were constantly being used.
Fluor, however, recognized the advantage of working collaboratively via SmartPlant Cloud, and was able to have an operational environment within two months,
accessible by all contractors consistently.
This meant that all parties came together
in a productive environment with minimal impact. Once ready, access was immediate and globally accessible.

Javier Sloninsky
Co-founder & CEO | EcoSys
22 INSIGHT
Issue 37
QUARTER 4, 2015
By J E R RY F E LT S
EcoSys project controls solution bridges the gap that has traditionally existed between planning and managing project execution. EcoSys sells its software for on-premise use, as a hosted solution, and as a software as a service (SaaS) model.
The acquisition was the third in 2015 by Intergraph PP&M, after OhmTech A/S, a Norwegian pressure vessel design software
company in March, and Blue Iron Systems, Inc. of Calgary, Alberta, in May.
Intergraph PP&M President Gerhard Sallinger said, EcoSys is
the most important and strategic acquisition we have done since
the acquisition of COADE in 2010.
EcoSys EPC is a great solution. It is a very dynamic company
with super growth numbers in the last three years. EcoSys technology will be strategic for our expanded offering to the AEC/BIM
markets to improve project execution.
Inc. magazine recently ranked EcoSys on its annual Inc. 5000
List, a prestigious ranking of U.S.-based, privately held, for profit
and independent companies. EcoSys revenue increased 222 percent during the three-year span evaluated by Inc. magazine.
EcoSys, which has approximately 100 employees in the United
States, will remain a standalone operation under its current management team. That team is comprised of software veterans with
hands-on experience designing and implementing world-class
commercial enterprise software currently used by thousands of
global organizations.
EcoSys is a strong brand with a skilled and experienced management team, and its EcoSys EPC core software solution is a strategic fit, Hexagon President and CEO Ola Rolln said in a news
release. We also see opportunities for international expansion of
EcoSys software throughout Hexagons global footprint.
EcoSys helps customers address the time and cost challenges
of capital project management on a global scale. Headquartered
in Broomfield, Colo., with offices in New York City, Houston,
London and Sydney, EcoSys has implemented enterprise planning
and cost control solutions for more than 250 leading organizations
around the world.
Founded in 2000 by the original developers of Primaveras enterprise project management system (now known as P6), EcoSys
has implemented enterprise solutions for over 250 leading organizations in the public and private sectors for a range of industries
including energy and utilities; oil, gas and chemicals; engineering
and construction; transportation; information technology and
government contracting.
We at EcoSys are very excited to be joining an industry leader
like Intergraph and becoming part of the Hexagon family, said
Javier Sloninsky, co-founder and CEO of EcoSys. With such a
powerful combination of technologies, we can help our customers
improve project performance and productivity like never before.
EcoSys EPC, our project controls software platform, is an
ideal fit, and this acquisition will create significantly more growth
opportunities by allowing our company to leverage Intergraphs

More to Come
Intergraph PP&M President Gerhard
Sallinger says the company will continue to seek
acquisition targets to strengthen its enterprise
engineering portfolio and BIM strategy.
We have increased our appetite to do
acquisitions, Sallinger said, and hope this will help
us reach the next level of size and success.
The September acquisition of EcoSys
Management LLC was PP&Ms third of 2015.
In March, Intergraph announced it had purchased
OhmTech A/S of Stavanger, Norway, a provider of
pressure vessel design software for more than 30
years. OhmTechs technical and development staff in
Norway joined Intergraph as part of the acquisition.
Acquiring OhmTech and its Visual Vessel Design
(VVD) software represented a pressure vessel
market share expansion for Intergraph into Europe,
as well as the addition of multi-language support for
important European design and construction codes
and standards.
Blue Iron Systems, Inc., and its flagship radiofrequency identification (RFID) and bar code product,
IronScan, became part of PP&M in May. Blue Irons
founder and staff joined Intergraph as part of the
acquisition and are based in Calgary, Alberta.
SmartPlant Materials Mobile Scan (formerly
known as IronScan RFID) and bar code tagging
technology is a bolt-on application to SmartPlant
Materials that gathers material site data. The
technology allows Intergraph customers
engineering, procurement, and construction firms
and owner operators to track materials in realtime directly from the manufacturers and suppliers
facilities to the construction site and further into
facilities management and maintenance phases.

Intergraph Smart Data Validator 2015 (SDV) is a comprehensive data validation, transformation and migration platform that
enables companies to ensure the quality of information and significantly reduce the time and costs associated with data take-on.
SDV supports the import, validation and export of data, providing
consistency and traceability of the entire data migration process.
Monitoring and maintaining data quality is a significant challenge for engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firms,
system integrators and owner operators across all industries. It is
even more difficult to manage when data is being moved from one
source to another, such as during project handover, brownfield
data take-on and data loads or migrations.
Poor mapping or inadequate validation during these processes
results in data that is not trustworthy and higher costs for the remainder of the facilitys life. Data handover can easily account for
one to two percent of the total capital expenditure (CAPEX) cost of
a project and often can take a year or more to complete.
Shell and Intergraph have worked closely together during the
last two years to improve the Smart Data Validator product. Smart
Data Validator is now faster, easier to use, more reliable and with
a much better user interface, said Mario Stevens, Senior Delivery Project Manager Engineering Excellence, Shell Global Solutions International B.V. The end-user communities in Shell have
