Chapter : 1

Introduction :
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) refers to strategies corporations or
firms conduct their business in a way that is ethical, society friendly and
beneficial to community in terms of development. In Simple words Corporate
social responsibility (CSR) involves companies voluntarily choosing to improve
their social and environmental standards and so reduce their negative impacts on
the environment. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) also called corporate
conscience, corporate citizenship or responsible business is a form of corporate
self-regulation integrated into a business model. CSR aims to embrace
responsibility for corporate actions and to encourage a positive impact on the
environment and stakeholders including consumers, employees, investors,
communities and others.
Infosys Limited has been an early adopter of Corporate Social
Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. Along with sustained economic performance,
environmental and social stewardship is also a key factor for holistic business
growth. Infosys Ltd is a public limited and India's second largest software
exporter company was incorporated in the year 1981 as Infosys Consultants Pvt
Ltd by Mr.N.R.Narayana Murthy at Karnataka. The company was started by
seven people with the investment of USD 250. The company became a public
limited company in the year 1992. Infosys Limited established the Infosys
Foundation in 1996 as a not for profit nodal body aimed at providing a dedicated
approach to community development and also to fulfil our CSR commitments.
Infosys Foundation works towards removing malnutrition, improving healthcare
infrastructure, supporting primary education, rehabilitating abandoned women
and children and preserving Indian art and culture. Infosys Foundation partners
with Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) to make a difference among local
communities. The Companys focus has always been to contribute to the
sustainable development of the society and environment and to make our planet
a better place for future generations.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The objectives of our project is 5

To understand the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility.

To study the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility in
Corporate Sector.
To study the awareness of the Infosys Company and Corporate Social
Responsibilities fulfilled by Infosys Foundation.

Research Methodology :
I have conducted the research to achieve my objectives for my academic
purpose. The Research Design helped me to give proper guideline in my
research work and also give recommendations on the basis of the finding of the
research.
The Research has been created with the help of Desk And Web Based
Research. A detailed search was conducted in Business journals, market
research sites, business newspapers, and publications to study their strategy and
identify metrics used by them (if any).

Limitations of Study :
No Primary Data is collected in this research work. The Data is collected
from Books, Newspapers, Magazines, Journals and Internet etc. A search of
secondary data sources should precede any primary research activity. Secondary
data may be sufficient to solve the problem, or at least it helps the reader better
understand the problem under study. Secondary data is cheaper and quicker to
collect than primary data and can be more accurate.
Where possible, multiple data sources should be used so that one source can
be cross-checked for consistency with another. It will almost certainly become
the case, in all parts of the world, that electronic information sources will
eventually supersede traditional printed sources. With the advent of Internet and
CD-ROM, searches of secondary sources are becoming more efficient and more
effective. Computer-based information systems give access to four different
types of database bibliographic, numeric, directories and full-text.

Significance of the study :

CSR is the procedure of assessing an organizations impact on society and

evaluating their responsibilities. It begins with an assessment of the following
aspects of each business:
To the Policy Maker
To the Society
To the Economy
To the Environment
To the Employees etc.

A. To the Policy Makers

This study encourages Private Public Partnership (PPP) for CSR promotion
encompassing infrastructure, pollution, child labor, labor productivity & morale.
It may become helpful to make the policy makers at political and corporate level
as well consider CSR an investment and not an expense as it can become
instrumental in increasing goodwill and corporate image.
B. To the Society
Development of infrastructure i.e. parks, water purification, education etc.
Environment protection
Uplifting of the rural populace
Bringing the tribes into the mainstream of the country
C. To the Economy as a whole
Increase in the growth rate
Strategic CSR at political and corporate level can make the country a better
investment destination .
Cumulative results may improve Human Development Index (H.D.I.) of the
country.

Chapter : 2
Conceptual Framework :
The present-day CSR (also called corporate responsibility, corporate
citizenship, responsible business and corporate social opportunity) is a concept
whereby business organizations consider the interest of society by taking
responsibility for the impact of their activities on customers, suppliers,
employees, shareholders, communities and other stakeholders as well as their
environment. This obligation shows that the organizations have to comply with
legislation and voluntarily take initiatives to improve the well-being of their
employees and their families as well as for the local community and society at
large. CSR simply refers to strategies corporations or firms conduct their
business in a way that is ethical and society friendly. CSR can involve a range of
activities such as working in partnership with local communities, socially
sensitive investment, developing relationships with employees, customers and
their families, and involving in activities for environmental conservation and
sustainability.
Definitions of CSR
Social responsibility refers to the obligations (of businessmen) to pursue those
policies to make those decisions or to follow those lines of action which are
desirable in terms of the objectives and values of our society.
Howard R. Bowen
Social responsibility requires managers to consider whether their action is
likely to promote the public good, to advance the basic beliefs of our society, to
contribute to its stability, strength and harmony.
Peter F. Drucker
Corporate Social responsibility is about how companies manage the business
processes to produce an overall positive impact on society.

Importance of CSR :
1) Improved organizational image :
Reputation of an organization can be greatly improved either with retail brands
which is of high value and/or organizations under the spotlight or with
organizations that have indirect exposure of retails. Values such as credibility
and quality are foundations of reputation.
2) Environmental Benefits :
The International Institute for Sustainable Development (2012) believes that in
addition to the benefits that CSR offers to the community and general public,
there are also environmental benefits that arise from the adoption and
implementation of CSR. The main CSR environmental benefits are

Greater material recyclability

Better product durability and functionality
Greater use of renewable resources
Integration of environmental management tools into business plans, including
life-cycle assessment and costing, environmental management standards, and
eco-labeling.

3) Benefits to the Community and the General Public :

According to the International Institute for Sustainable Development (2012),
positive outcomes that arise when businesses adopt a policy of social
responsibility are not only viewed on the business level, but also on the
community and the general public level. The main CSR benefits to the
community and general public are Charitable contributions
Employee volunteer programs
Corporate involvement in community education, employment and homelessness
programs
Product safety and quality (International Institute for Sustainable Development,
2012,
10

4) Improved relations with regulators :

Regulators approval processes are made easier to companies who have made
socio environmental operations beyond what the regulation requires, yielding to
a better corporate reputation and having close and invaluable interactions.
5) Building Corporate Social Capital in the community :
Disseminating companys information, including its goals and activities, leads to
better stakeholders relations which may consequently develop into stronger and
long-term public, private and civil society alliances.
6) Enhanced Talent Management ability :
Recruitment and development of staff are enhanced. This can be due to a
dignified sense in the organizations merchandise and customs and also the
result of its operations that improves the employees moral sense and their
loyalty.
7) Acting as catalyst for responsible consumption :
Firms with CSR strategies should assume their active role in supporting
sustainable consumption patterns and lifestyles through the products and
services they deliver and their production processes. Responsible consumerism
does not only consist of altering consumers preferences but also viewing the
nature of the supplied goods, their correlation to consumers rights and stability
concerns, and how regulatory authorities manage the relationship between
producers and consumers.
The term CSR came in to common use in the early 1970s, after many
multinational corporations formed, although it was seldom abbreviated. The
term stakeholder, meaning those on whom an organization's activities have an
impact, was used to describe corporate owners beyond shareholders as a result
of an influential book by R Freeman in 1984.

11

Limitations and Constraints :

Main CSR limitations could be summarized in the lack of awareness of the what
CSR is, the unavailability of time and financial resources to contribute to CSR,
and the lack of interest and desire to respond to CSRs regulations.
Lack of Awareness about CSR :
Some small businesses are not aware of what CSR stands for, and have little or
no understanding of the concept; hence, it is not included in the scope of their
activities and operations. Some companies may be aware of it yet they view it as
a superfluity, a luxury which they cannot afford especially in difficult economic
times. In such a case, the costs associated with CSR programs implementation
are the main obstacle to integrate new CSR policies and initiatives in the
business. In this context, companies with limited resources are most likely to
consider the high costs of such programs rather than the outweighing benefits
such as increased productivity, employee retentionthat may offset the costs
incurred.
Lack of Recognition of CSR by the Top Administrators :
Particularly top managers may not recognize the importance of CSR programs;
they may underestimate this issue, even considering it one of HR or public
relations or even marketing department duties and tasks. Hence, the top
managements commitment from initial CSR assessment to strategy and
commitment development is equally essential for the successful CSR
integration.
For instance, some senior managers and policy-makers tend to choose one single
isolated issue and bring it up erroneously as CSR Management via
highlighting and using it in their marketing and advertising campaigns in the
purpose of enhancing the corporate image. Furthermore, managers may fail to
think systemically about CSR, i.e. they may engage exclusively in the economic
valuation of the CSR programs while missing out the big picture and thinking of
CSR as an integrated system.

Learning And Education:
Basic education links the children, whether of the cities or villages, to all that
is best and lasting in India," said Mahatma Gandhi. At no time have his words
been more prophetic, than now. In a world where education has become the
biggest differentiating factor, the Foundation offers an edge to deprived and
rural students, through its activities. In what is one of the largest rural education
programs in the country, the foundation has donated 10,200 sets of books in
Karnataka alone, and in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Orissa and Kerala, under its
Library for Every Rural School project. Through this program, the Foundation
has set up more than 10,150 libraries in rural government schools. A minimum
of 200 books, depending on the strength of the school, is provided. Each set has
18

around 200 to 250 books. The cost of each set ranges between Rs. 2,000 and Rs.
3,000. Books on various subjects, including science, history, mathematics,
general knowledge, grammar, literature, geography, vocational training and
fiction have been donated to cater to the interests of students in all age groups.
To simplify the standard of computer education for students in rural areas, a
separate book has been written and is being distributed under the library project.
This book has also been translated into Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. In another
innovative project that facilitates higher learning, the Foundation has set up
libraries in Hubli and Bangalore, that can be accessed by under-privileged
students. These well-equipped libraries have the latest books prescribed in hitech streams like medicine and engineering. All a student has to do is pay a
deposit of Rs 800 for unlimited use of the library through his or her education.
To identify and help students in dire need, the Foundation works with Prerna, an
NGO in Raichur and Bangalore, and Vidya Poshak in Dharwad, to distribute
scholarships to poor students. With the help of these organizations, the
Foundation reaches out to deserving students across Karnataka. The Foundation
has also made donations towards the reconstruction of old school buildings. For
instance, 14 government schools in slum areas of
Hyderabad were
reconstructed. The Foundation has also renovated the Gandhinagar, Kottara St.
Peter's School and Kapikad Zilla Panchayat schools in Mangalore, Karnataka. It
also contributes towards the construction of additional classrooms, school
funds/corpus funds, school furniture, equipment and so on, especially in
backward areas. The Foundation recently purchased an index Braille printer for
the Sharada Devi Adhar Vikas Kendra in Shimoga, Karnataka. The Foundation
donated study material, including science kits, to 20 schools in rural Karnataka.
Donations have also been made towards computer centers in rural areas of
Karnataka. The Foundation works with various organizations in Maharastra,
Tamil Nadu and Orissa, to facilitate the education of slum children in in these
states. The Foundation collaborated with the Center for Environment Education
(CEE), Bangalore, for the orientation of teachers specializing in science and the
environment. The Center developed training material on water. During the
program, it linked the Science and Social Studies curriculum with the
environmental perspective. Around 15 camps were held in various parts of
Karnataka over the last 3 years. Totally, around 1,000 teachers were trained. It
helps the Bangalore Association for Science towards the development and
19

maintenance of the planetarium in Bangalore, including funding of the skytheater program at the planetarium. The Foundation constructed a science center
at a rural school in the Kolar District of Karnataka, a one-of-its-kind center in
the entire district. It caters to the students of the school, as well as schools in the
neighboring villages. It made a contribution to fund new self-employment
courses at post graduation and post matriculation levels at the Nrupathunga
Educational Institute in Hyderabad.
Art And Culture :
Preserving our rich heritage and honoring our artisans are some of the ways
the Infosys Foundation contributes to this space. The Foundation has helped
revive the art of the weavers of Pochampalli village in Andhra Pradesh. It helps
organize cultural programs to promote artists in rural areas of Karnataka and
Andhra Pradesh. It traces and honors artistes from different parts of India.
Today, the scope of the foundation's activities has widened to identifying underprivileged artists from different walks of like, be it writers, painters, poets or
musicians, who don't have access to contacts or help. It assists them on a "need"
basis, offering financial assistance, promoting their art, or helping them receive
much-deserved recognition. It organizes programs like puppet shows and other
cultural events to encourage artistes and performers in rural areas of Karnataka
and Andhra Pradesh, and offers them financial assistance to carry forward their
art. In Karnataka, the Gamaka form of music was fast disappearing. A few years
ago, The Foundation coordinated a project to donate more than 200 sets comprising a Gamaka cassette and record player - to 100 rural schools in
Karnataka, to bring the dying art form back to life. It has sponsored art
exhibitions and performing arts programs in Dharwad and Bangalore in
Karnataka.

Chapter : 3
Observations :
The Observations related with CSR & CSR activities held by Infosys Ltd.
From the overall information collected from the available resources I observed
that CSR is a combined concept which covers social, ecological and economic
issues.
Social involvement of business would enhance a harmonious and healthy
relationship between the society and business seeking mutual benefit for the
both.
As far as the Infosys group is concerned , it has gone a long way in fulfilling its
duty and responsibility towards the society and the nation.
The key areas of Infosys Foundations CSR drive are healthcare, social
rehabilitation and rural upliftment; learning and education; art and culture.
Other initiatives include construction of orphanages, vocational training centers
for women, libraries for rural schools and donation of aid equipment to the
physically challenged.

Chapter : 4
Findings :

Profit earning should not be the core purpose of businesses; instead

businesses must render services to the society.
Social involvement may create a better public image and goodwill for the
company which further becomes instrumental in attracting customers,
efficient personnel and investors.
Promoted by Infosys Technologies Limited, in 1996 the Foundation
began its work in Karnataka, India. gradually extending its activities to
the states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa and
Punjab.
Potential employees of a country are not only influenced by the salary but
are also influenced by the CSR policies followed by a company.

25

Suggestions :

The concept of private-public partnership (PPP) should be applied in the

effective implementation of CSR i.e. government and business houses
should act in collaboration for the cause.
The Human Resource department (at the political and private level both)
should be entrusted with the responsibility of measuring and evaluating in
CSR activities . It can be done in two forms
(a) direct results, such as, economic and financial savings
(b) indirect results like increase in employee satisfaction, less
absenteeism, less employee turnover evaluated by staff surveys .
Periodic review of the CSR activities should be conducted by every
business entity so as to identify the pitfalls and the areas left out.
Innovation should essentially be a matter of concern ; be it searching the
untouched areas and scope of CSR or the formulation of CSR strategy or
the implementation thereof.
NGOs should be encouraged to act in collaboration for the CSR activities
under different schemes and projects as they play a crucial role in the
upliftment of the masses.
