Gather and settle. The time from 10:45 to 11:00 am on Sunday is a time for
Friends to gather in the meeting room to prepare and settle for worship. Enter
whenever you are ready. While we expect silence in the meeting room during
that time, we cannot expect silence outside of the meeting room until 11:00.

Meeting for worship. State College Friends Meeting welcomes you to our
silent, “unprogrammed” worship, ideally led by God’s Spirit. We have no
designated ministers. A period of about twenty minutes is needed to center
down into inward stillness. Spoken messages come from the spiritual depth of
our lives and from the leadings of the Spirit. It is wise to ask oneself these
questions before rising to speak: is my message from the Spirit, or from some
other place? Is the message for me or for the whole group? Is the time to
give it now or at some other time? It is best to follow each message with a
period of silence in order to absorb what it has to tell us. When a message
speaks to the condition of those present, out of the deepest parts of ourselves,
and is harmoniously developed and deepened—and not too long—a profound
sense of spiritual community may occur among us that freshens and delights.
We call this a “gathered” meeting.

Closing meeting for worship. Our time of worship does not necessarily end
at noon—it ends when the appointed person, attuned to the spiritual sense of
the meeting, recognizes the appropriate moment.

Contacting Care and Concern. We hope that Friends will contact members
of the Care and Concern Committee to request prayer or to be held in the
Light, to request assistance, or to make the committee aware of changes in
your lives or of others that you believe should come to the Committee’s
attention. Contact Lynne Grutzeck, 237-1862.

Contributions to the Meeting are always welcome and needed. Checks may
be placed in the donation box in the entry hall or mailed to: State College
Friends Meeting, 611 E. Prospect Avenue, State College, PA 16801

The Meeting office. Betsy Gamble, the Meeting secretary, is in the office
Mon. through Fri., from 5:30 -6:30 pm. She may be reached by e-mail,
office@statecollegefriends.org, or by phone, 237-7051. Please let her know

can be avoided. Scheduling of non-standard tasks should be done through
Louise Sandmeyer.

School 5/6 grade field trip to Ithaca, NY.
►Please support the weekly peace vigil, every Saturday, 1:30-2:30 pm at the
gates at the corner of Allen St. and College Ave.
►All Committee Clerks please submit budget requests to the Finance
Committee as soon as possible. Messages may be placed in the Finance
Committee mailbox or sent to Claudia Wilson at cwilson@chilitech.com.
►Considering the Meetinghouse. Calling one, calling all who have a vision
for sprucing up the meeting house and want to deepen Friendships within the
meeting! We’re putting out a call for anyone interested to join a Meeting
House Design team. For now, we’re seeking folks to help us create a vision
and a master plan, then gather able bodies to work on specific projects.
Interested folks, please contact Dana Mitra dana@psu.edu; 234-8966.
►Friends Committee on National Legislation: Take Action:
**Afghanistan: A Chance to Stop the Killing** The House plans to approve
$33 billion more for the war in Afghanistan. Yet, on Capitol Hill, FCNL's
lobbyists are finding support for proposals to end that U.S. war responsibly.
Changing the war mentality of Congress will not be easy. It is possible,
though. Representatives McGovern (D-WA) and Walter Jones (R-NC), have
introduced a bill to require the administration to create an exit strategy from
Afghanistan and set a timetable for withdrawal of U.S. forces.
If we can persuade at least 100 representatives to cosponsor the McGovern-
Jones Exit Strategy bill, they may be able to attach that war-ending provision to
the supplemental war funding bill, which Congress will vote on in the next
several months: http://action.fcnl.org/r/131124/74290/0.
We oppose the war spending supplemental. We urge representatives to vote
against the $33 billion for war. Whether a representative is able to do that or
not, he/she should be able to cosponsor and vote for the bipartisan McGovern-
Jones Exit Strategy bill. Please ask your representative to do that now.
*Take Action*: Ask your representative to cosponsor the McGovern-
Jones Afghanistan Exit bill (H.R.5015):
http://action.fcnl.org/r/131125/74290/0. Also, multiply your effort: ask five
friends to write to their representatives, too:
http://action.fcnl.org/r/131126/74290/0.
*An exit strategy is the next step and should:
*Begin a withdrawal of U.S. troops
*Halt offensive operations against the Taliban and focus on political
reconciliation among all Afghan groups
*Engage Afghanistan's neighbors, including Iran and Pakistan, to promote
reconciliation and security
*Channel development aid through Afghan and multilateral organizations.
►Caps for Chemo: The Diane Mathews Memorial Project. On March
18th, 2010, my friend Diane Mathews lost her battle with cancer. Diane was an
avid knitter who used her extraordinary color and texture sense to create
beautiful wearable objects of art. Long before her diagnosis, one of Diane’s
projects was knitting caps for chemotherapy patients. In honor of her memory
I am organizing the collection of caps for chemotherapy patients. Patterns for
knit, crochet and fleece chemo caps are available in the Social Room. The
finished items will be collected during April and May and the caps will be
donated in her name on the anniversary of her birthday May 25, 2010. Thank
you for helping me honor the memory of my friend. Cy de Vries
►Weis Gift Cards program needs a volunteer. The meeting is in need of a
replacement to manage sales of Weis and Giant Gift cards for the Friends
Meeting. Contact Dean Tuttle, 234 3361, or deshltu@juno.com
