Why We Need CIP

Background

This report contains the CIP for the RO plant at EEAP. The RO plant
CIP required when the surface of RO membrane is subjected to
fouling by foreign materials which may be present in the field water
such as Hydrates of metal oxides, Calcium precipitates, Organic and
biological matters. (The
term fouling here includes the buildup of all
kinds of layers on the membrane surface, including scaling.
CIP of RO plant mostly required on the Basis of following 3 points:
When the p across the membranes increases 10%
Permeate flow decreases 10%
TDS increases abnormally.
In normal operation, the membrane in reverse osmosis elements can
become fouled by suspended solids, microorganisms, and mineral scale.
These deposits build up during operation and cause loss in water output or
salt rejection, or both. Regular cleaning of the membrane elements
minimizes the loss of performance and extends membrane life.
Membrane cleaning systems are designed to be used with any RO system
to clean membranes without removing them from the system. Our cleaning
systems are provided with hoses and quick disconnect fittings to allow easy
connection to the membrane system.

CIP Activity Procedure

RO plant CIP activity started at 0900 hrs. at 1st March
First of we fill the cleaning tank with permeate water.
Chemical used for CIP are Genesol 703, Genesol 37, Genesol 30
Take samples for Analysis before the CIP
Before CIP starts note down all the parameters of RO plant.
After that starts the first bath with Gensol 703 for 02 hours by adding
10 kg.
In this bath 15 minutes are for circulation and fifteen minutes for
soaking.
After that starts the 2nd batch by adding 15 kg chemical time required
for that bath was 4 hrs.
During this cleaning we frequently note down the ph. of solution, that
was alkaline solution and PH remains from 10.5 to 12
After this complete flushing of system take place.
After that we started the acidic cleaning with Genesol 37.
Total time required for this activity was 05 hrs.
30 minutes for circulation and 40 minutes for soaking.
After that bath with acidic chemical complete flushing was done,
The RO plant cleaning activity was end at 00:30 hrs.
Then we take RO back in service and note down its parameters after
cleaning.
Took the sample for lab analysis after cleaning.

Conclusion
After CIP the completion it was observed that the permeate flow is
increased from 10 GPM to 20 GPM.
p across the membrane is decreased from 105 psi to 95 psi.
Permeate TDS are also decreased.

Recommendation
It is recommended that when a RO machine is going to shutdown,
carefully consideration must be paid. And For the membrane storage
procedure in order to minimize the potential for micro biological growth in
the system.

Preservation
Short term shut down of an RO system (24-48 hours) generally does not
require special membrane storage procedures. The RO should be cycled
(run in operational mode) for at least 15 minutes every 24-48 hours to
reduce the potential for bio-growth and stagnation within the system. Some
systems use a permeate flush during shutdown. This type of cycling will
allow the system to remain operationally ready, and it will allow for a
slightly longer time between flush cycles.
For prolonged storage (i.e. several days to several months), the following
procedures are recommended. These procedures will help protect and
preserve the elements from bacterial growth. The elements can be left in
their housings or unloaded and stored separately.
Typically, one of the following lay-up solutions is used depending upon
application
Regulatory limitations, preference, and chemical availability:
1. 0.5 to 1.0% sodium bisulfite or Biocide.
10

Preservation procedure
The following procedure is recommended for RO storage with biocide
solution.
Prepare the appropriate strength sodium bisulfite or biocide solution
in the Cleaning tank by diluting with permeates water.
Circulate the solution through the RO system for 15 to 20 minutes.
When the RO system is filled with this solution, close the valves to
retain the solution in the RO.
Repeat Steps 2 and 3 with fresh solution every 15 days
When the RO system is ready to be returned to service, flush the
system to drain until the
Permeate water meets quality specifications, then return the machine
to service
