VanDerBrink Aucons is pleased to bring you the Baus Collecon. Harvey Baus loved classic vehicles and telling the
stories that came with them. He enjoyed his hobby with his wife, Agnes, and his children. The family has decided to
e
sell their collecon and the car museum-real estate at aucon to the highest bidder. There is something for everyone
from Cadillacs to Pickups. The 40x120 insulated shed would be a great addion to house any collecon. Plan now to
o
aend this aucon AND PLEASE BE ON TIME! See you there!

News and notes from the collector car world
After building six Lightweight ETypes two years ago, Jaguar has planned
a new batch of continuation models

In 1957, Jaguar was working on 25
XKSS cars, but nine were wrecked in
a fire at the factory. The remaining 16
XKSS survivors were finished and sold,

will be changing to a fall event this
year. The tour, which traditionally goes
from Neenah, Wis., to Road America in
Elkhart Lake, will be held on Sept. 1617.
This year the Fox Valley Road and
Track Classic will be held in conjunction with the Vintage Sportscar Drivers
Associations (VSCDA) Fall Festival at
the historic race course. The VSCDA

eneral Motors has been known to produce some spectacular one-off vehicles. This unique 1953 Buick Skylark Riviera coupe is one fine example.
Buick began developing the idea for the special Skylark
convertible in 1952. Unlike production Buick converts of the
day, the 1952 Skylark show car featured radiused rear wheel
openings, lowered door tops that included a Darrin dip at
the beltline and wire wheels. The Skylark also dropped the
trademark Buick portholes, and had especially thin side trim
that swept, dipped, and swept again for almost the entire
length of the car. For the 1953 model year, coinoincidentally Buicks 50th anniversary, the special
al
Skylark convertible became a dream-car-cometrue and was offered as a limited-production
model with all the same special body modifications. Alongside the 1953 Cadillac Eldorado and Oldsmobile Fiesta other top-line
1953 GM convertibles modified to a racier
appearance the Skylark was part of a
triumvirate of GM dream car realities;
cars that went from show car stand to
showroom.
Only a small group of 50s GM
groupies have heard of the one-of-a-kind
ind
1953 Skylark hardtop, which has beenn in the
hobby since at least 1980 at least from what I
can surmise using documents uncoveredd in the Old
Cars Weekly archive. Those documents were supplied
lied
to OCW in 1990 by James Ashworth, who owned the oneof-a-kind Skylark hardtop at that time.
Heres the low down: A July 21, 1980, letter to Ashworth

a police escort to the Jung Hotel only a little bit late and saved
our careers. The secret had been kept, and 2 young factory
representatives were able to remain in Buicks employ to this
day. Every time I see a picture or anything in writing about the
original Skylark, I silently thank Officer Clovis Bordelon, a
true southern gentleman, and a dedicated public servant.
Although we didnt build many of them, it was a super
car, just a few years ahead of its time.
Along with this 1980 letter to the Oakland Tribune columnist, M.D. Reilly enclosed a business card stating he was the
current Buick Motor Division zone manager operating out of
Fremont, Calif.
Sometime after 1990, Ashworth sold the restored blue Skylark hardtop. The last we heard, it was offered for sale by the
famous Bob McDorman collection at the 2009 Mecum Auctions Kissimmee sale. There, it sold for $92,000. Two years
later, in 2011, it crossed the Barrett-Jackson auction block in
Scottsdale and sold for $115,000. Both prices are at or below
the values of restored 1953 Skylark convertibles, of which
1,690 were built. We havent seen the hardtop since.
Perhaps it will show up again in a dusty San Jose garage
after a rabid fan hunts it down for another 20 years.

That year, I was at GM Media Archives sifting through General Motors

for the book Cadillac: 100 Years of Innovation. In digging through GMs files,
I stumbled upon a studio shot of a mid1950s Cadillac Eldorado two-door hardtop. After closely examining the photo,
I realized it had the 1955 Eldorado rear

The seller also stated that the original interior was upholstered in unique
black-and-white material from neither
1955 nor 1956, but it was fashioned
on the seats and panels to the design of
1956. The interior images he sent also
showed the car had the chromed interior
appointments also found on a production 1955 Eldorado convertible.
Unique cars such as this were given
dated Shop Order numbers by General
Motors design; these SO numbers were
generally stamped on a tag that was installed on the cowl of each prototype
or factory-modified car. The seller included pictures of this 1955 Cadillacs
tag, which identified it as SO 2542 with
a build date of June 6, 1955. This relatively late production date partially explained how it was possible for the car
to have 1956 mechanical and interior
features. The complete explanation was
answered by the identity of the cars
original owner.
In 1955, C.F. Arnold was the chief
engineer of the Cadillac Motor Car Division of GM. He had joined the division in 1925 as an engineering department laboratory assistant and worked
his way up to chief engineer by 1950. In
cross-referencing a list of SO numbers
supplied by fellow CLC member Jim
Jordan, SO 2542 matched up to a 1955

certainly the same Mr. Arnold who
was chief engineer of Cadillac, and who
would have been this cars first owner
as SO cars were built for show displays

(For example, Harley Earls LeSabre,

Lots of tape, time and patience combine to turn out

car to McMyler, who had to cut the body apart and basically
start over.
We had to cut apart the quarter panels and get them
brought in back to where they should be. Unfortunately hes
got a lot of money into this thing right now and were trying
to get it done without killing him on it, McMyler added.
This is pretty basic, its just laying down straight lines and
making sure everything is straight and perfect. Ive got the
original GM specs showing where the stripes go. The back
is a little trickier and the cowl vent is a little trickier because
youve got wrap it around the vents. But when you are
shooting down the hood, its just straight lines.
Once the car was ready for stripes, it took about two days
to complete the masking and paint work to install them.
May 12, 2016 / Old Cars Weekly News & Marketplace EXPRESS
19
The stark white Camaro will receive two wide Rally stripes on the
hood and deck lid. Each wide stripe is accented by a narrow quarterinch stripe on either side. The taping begins with straight lines down
the hood using quarter-inch 3M masking tape. Conveniently, the black
accent stripes are a quarter-inch wide, meaning the tape can be used
to get the correct thickness.
There are no templates for the Rallye stripes, but McMyler has
some sketches taken from the Internet with measurements off an
unrestored survivor car. The stripes on the hood do not line up
exactly with the stripes on the deck lid, McMyler points out. They
are spaced a little wider apart. Nobody ever notices that. The stripes
also dont go all the way to the back glass.
A spacer masking strip is laid down beneath the edge of the hood
opening. The hood stripes will wrap downward and end in the engine
compartment (bottom) side of the hood.
20
There is lots of trial and error involved when taping stripes. Its not
easy to eyeball lines when there are body contours involved. Trust
your measurements more than your eyes and get the tape as straight
as you can between your marks.
Old Cars Weekly News & Marketplace EXPRESS / May 12, 2016
www.oldcarsweekly.com
McMyler came up with his own template circles to help him radius
the Camaro Rallye stripes. He saves the cardboard cutouts and reuses them when the need arises.
A thicker half-inch tape strip is put down behind the rear window to
show McMyler where the rear black stripes will end and turn back.
The quarter-inch
tape works nicely
for turning corners.
Eighth-inch tape
works even better.
In this case,
McMyler sticks with
the quarter-inch for
everything because
his narrow black
stripes will be a
quarter-inch.
This middle strip of tape will be the narrow black stripe. A tech
tip: When you are using tape as a spacer like this, do not pull on it
because the tape will stretch. And as it stretches, it thins out. Youll
be way off, McMyler cautions.
www.oldcarsweekly.com
Plastic can go over the body for final masking, but not over the trunk
and hood they need to be opened and closed during spraying.
Wider masking tape is used to shield the areas on the hood and deck
lid that need to remain white.
May 12, 2016 / Old Cars Weekly News & Marketplace EXPRESS
21
The tape is what will be white. The white is what will be black,
McMyler says. Youre brain has to kind of work in reverse.
Measurements for the stripes on the spoiler and cowl are taken with
the pieces mounted on the car, but taping and painting are done
with both pieces off off the car. Masking the narrow stripes that go
around the cowl vents is among the trickiest parts of this job.
McMyler gives all the areas headed for paint a final solvent wash to get rid of any pencil marks and make sure there is nothing left that could
contaminate the paint.
22
Old Cars Weekly News & Marketplace EXPRESS / May 12, 2016

Well go over it with a tack rag just before we paint it, just to get any little pieces of dust or dirt, McMyler says. just a simple smart tack rag...
Always open up your tack rag and give yourself a nice big area to work with.
The black polyester paint is mixed 50-50 with reducer. McMyler uses a basic 3M gravity-feed gun and applies a light starter coat. It will be
followed by two more coats of black base, followed by three coats of clear. Its a solvent-based base coat. I dont use water base. I dont think
the technology is there yet. Its just my personal opinion, he says. Until its mandated I will not switch. The gun has the filter built right into
it. Im a big believer in 3M. They invented the process and everybody else pretty much copied it.

stripes are clean and uniform all the way around.
The entire car was clearcoated when it was painted white. The hood
and trunk areas will be cleared again now that the stripes are in place.
The freshly painted areas get another wipedown before getting cleared
to make sure there are no smudges, dirt or other debris that might
have shown up after unmasking.
A different gun with
a slightly heavier
pattern is used for
the clear, which is
a thicker solution
than basecoat paint.
McMyler will lay
down three coats
of clear. The base
coat is very simple to
spray. You can lay it
down in any direction
you want to with
the non-metallics.
The clear is going to
take a little bit more
technique and youve
got to be a little
more fundamentally
correct. You need it to
go on evenly because
if you pile it up in
one area, its going to
slide.

Springing to life
Simple spring replacement can make seat backs firm and comfy again
By Brian Earnest
here are countless styles and variations when it comes to seat construction in
old cars, but they often follow a similar formula: more complicated construction for the seat cushion area (where you sit), often involving heavier gauge
springs; and a simpler setup for the seat backs, frequently using simple vertical
zigzag springs of a thinner gauge.
Rebuilding or refurbishing the sitting area of the seats can be a quirky and
challenging task involving a few special tools, hog rings and other fun stuff.
Putting new springs in a seat back is probably a lot easier than a lot of folks realize, however. Once the seats have been disassembled and the bare metal frames are
ready to go, it generally only involves pulling out the old vertically arranged zigzag
springs, cutting some new springs to fit, then hooking them in.
If its to the point where your foam is completely deteriorated, or the metal is
50, 60, 70 years old and the metal is getting fatigued its only meant to spring so
many times and then you add in maybe a mouse nest in there there are a lot
times you would benefit from changing the springs, said Chris Arendt, of Fast Freddies Rod Shop in Eau Claire, Wis. It helps if you have the right tools, and youre
looking at probably 200 bucks to buy the right tools. But you wouldnt have to have
them. It just makes it go faster.
Following is how Arendt replaced the seat back springs in a 1969 Dodge Dart.
www.oldcarsweekly.com
New zigzag springs are sold in rolls of 100plus feet (middle). These two rolls are made
of 8- and 12-gauge steel. The old springs can
be removed by bending a tab on one end of
the seat frame and by simply stretching the
spring enough to unclip it.
May 12, 2016 / Old Cars Weekly News & Marketplace EXPRESS
25
A spring stretcher is helpful, but not essential. It makes removing the decaying original springs a snap. The seat backs of the Dart have four
simple zigzag lengths that will be removed and replaced.
The new 12-gauge spring is tough to cut with a hand tool. Arendt went for a cut-off wheel to cut the new springs from the roll.

A spring end
former tool puts
a small bend in
the end of the
spring to keep it
from sliding out
of its retaining
clip. Again, its
not crucial to have
the tool. A couple
pairs of vice-grips
can also do the
job.

Bingham Offenhauser, Rodman had a police scanner speaker in every room of the house and his car big sweeping antenna on the back. He even had a special headset speaker under his pillow... It wasnt so much being an
ambulance chaser as much as priding himself on having the first, and the best, photos of a crime or accident scene
which could then be used in the newspaper or in court proceedings. Following are a few of his memorable mangled
