VanDerBrink Aucons is pleased to bring you the Baus Collecon. Harvey Baus loved classic vehicles and telling the
stories that came with them. He enjoyed his hobby with his wife, Agnes, and his children. The family has decided to
e
sell their collecon and the car museum-real estate at aucon to the highest bidder. There is something for everyone
from Cadillacs to Pickups. The 40x120 insulated shed would be a great addion to house any collecon. Plan now to

Land Rovers new Reborn program

will take 25 prime examples of the original 1948 Land Rover Series 1 and restore them to original factory condition.
The Series 1 4x4 vehicles will
be restored at Land Rovers Solihull
factory and then offered for sale. The
projects will use original and re-created
parts and will take six to nine months
to restore per vehicle, according to the
company. The 25 vintage 4x4s will be
given a factory warranty of 12 months
and 12,000 miles. Cost is expected to
be $85,000 to $113,000 per vehicle.
The restorations mark the start of
Land Rover Classic, a new factory
program that will offer OCD levels of
factory restoration for old Land Rover
vehicles.

The Studebaker National Museum has

named Rebecca J. Bonham its 2016
Champion. Bonham was scheduled to
be honored at the Museums 15th Annual Hall of Champions Dinner Thursday, April 21, at the museum. The Hall
of Champions Dinner honors an outstanding individual and/or company that
has contributed to the success of the
Studebaker Corporation, the Studebaker
National Museum, the transportation
industry or the auto collector hobby in
an extraordinary way, according to the
museum. The award may also honor a
South Bend area pioneering business
which exemplifies the entrepreneurial
spirit of the Studebaker family.
Under Bonhams leadership, the museum secured funding to design and
construct its new Chapin Street facility;
she also guided the museum to become
only the third automotive museum to
achieve accreditation from American
Alliance of Museums.
The Studebaker National Museum
will also honor Evie Kirkwood with the
Spirit of Studebaker Award. The Spirit
of Studebaker recognizes individuals
who have given freely of their time, talent, and resources for the Studebaker
National Museum, and have played a

RICHMOND, R.I. _ A Rhode Island man is facing charges after he and

an accomplish allegedly used a flatbed
truck to steal a 1970 AMC AMX. Jose
Leal, 50, then sold the car to an unwitting buyer.
Leal was processed on one count
of larceny over $1,500. According to
police reports, Leal and an accomplice
loaded the car without permission from
the owner, who was a resident of the
neighborhood where they were working.
The victim reported the car missing
on Feb. 10, according to police records.
Leal eventually sold the car for
$3,000. Leal was released on a promise
to appear for arraignment in 4th Division District Court on April 28.

After building six Lightweight ETypes two years ago, Jaguar has planned
a new batch of continuation models
with its XKSS sports car.
In 1957, Jaguar was working on 25
XKSS cars, but nine were wrecked in
a fire at the factory. The remaining 16
XKSS survivors were finished and sold,

with one of the buyers being Steve McQueen.

Jaguar now says the remaining nine
will now be rebuilt and sold as continuation models. Prices will reportedly be in
the neighborhood of $1.5 million per car
with deliveries beginning in early 2017.

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. _ The annual Fox Valley Road and Track Classic, which is normally run in the spring,
will be changing to a fall event this
year. The tour, which traditionally goes
from Neenah, Wis., to Road America in
Elkhart Lake, will be held on Sept. 1617.
This year the Fox Valley Road and
Track Classic will be held in conjunction with the Vintage Sportscar Drivers
Associations (VSCDA) Fall Festival at
the historic race course. The VSCDA
event will feature up to 300 vintage
sports racing cars.

By Angelo Van Bogartt

eneral Motors has been known to produce some spectacular one-off vehicles. This unique 1953 Buick Skylark Riviera coupe is one fine example.
Buick began developing the idea for the special Skylark
convertible in 1952. Unlike production Buick converts of the
day, the 1952 Skylark show car featured radiused rear wheel
openings, lowered door tops that included a Darrin dip at
the beltline and wire wheels. The Skylark also dropped the
trademark Buick portholes, and had especially thin side trim
that swept, dipped, and swept again for almost the entire
length of the car. For the 1953 model year, coinoincidentally Buicks 50th anniversary, the special
al
Skylark convertible became a dream-car-cometrue and was offered as a limited-production
model with all the same special body modifications. Alongside the 1953 Cadillac Eldorado and Oldsmobile Fiesta other top-line
1953 GM convertibles modified to a racier
appearance the Skylark was part of a
triumvirate of GM dream car realities;
cars that went from show car stand to
showroom.
Only a small group of 50s GM
groupies have heard of the one-of-a-kind

1953 Skylark hardtop, which has beenn in the
hobby since at least 1980 at least from what I
can surmise using documents uncoveredd in the Old
Cars Weekly archive. Those documents were supplied

Customer Service, verified Buick Engineering indeed had
built a 1953 Skylark hardtop with body number 6120 in Flint,
Mich., by converting a 1953 76R (Roadmaster hardtop) by
installing the 1953 76X Skylark Convertible doors, quarters
and related parts and included the 1954 interior trim design.
The car was built to test the concept of possibly marketing a
1953 Skylark Hardtop design.
The car was further identified in Burnsides letter to Ashworth as Style 534737X, and the serial number was given.
Later

was able to fill in the cars earliest days on the road. M.D. Doc

very interesting tale, printed in its

reps and me were assigned the duty of picking the car up at the
port of New Orleans and very secretly driving it to the Jung

Orleans, the streets are pretty well deserted at 2:00 a.m.
We ran into two small problems, however. First we got

lost, and then ran out of gas.

We were in a bind. Finding a

the Jung while maintaining
the secrecy Mr. Wiles had
mandated. Our future was on the line. We were in trouble!
Fortunately, a New Orleans patrol car came by, we flagged
him down and a true gentleman by the name of Officer Clovis
Bordelon listened to our story, admired the Skylark, drove to
an all night service station, brought us some gasoline, gave us

our careers. The secret had been kept, and 2 young factory
representatives were able to remain in Buicks employ to this
day. Every time I see a picture or anything in writing about the
original Skylark, I silently thank Officer Clovis Bordelon, a
true southern gentleman, and a dedicated public servant.
Although we didnt build many of them, it was a super
car, just a few years ahead of its time.
Along with this 1980 letter to the Oakland Tribune columnist, M.D. Reilly enclosed a business card stating he was the
current Buick Motor Division zone manager operating out of

Fremont, Calif.
Sometime after 1990, Ashworth sold the restored blue Skylark hardtop. The last we heard, it was offered for sale by the
famous Bob McDorman collection at the 2009 Mecum Auctions Kissimmee sale. There, it sold for $92,000. Two years
later, in 2011, it crossed the Barrett-Jackson auction block in
Scottsdale and sold for $115,000. Both prices are at or below
the values of restored 1953 Skylark convertibles, of which
1,690 were built. We havent seen the hardtop since.
Perhaps it will show up again in a dusty San Jose garage
after a rabid fan hunts it down for another 20 years.

Unique 1955 Eldorado was built

Tucked in the classified section of The Self-Starter was a exist?
With the question answered by the July 2015 classified ad,
small photo and ad for a very special 1955 Cadillac. Most
people probably glanced over the ad without realizing how I contacted the seller. He explained that the current owner had
special the pictured car is. Had I not been so enthralled with bought the 1955 Seville in 1971 and stored it around 1980.
1955 Cadillacs in general, and 1956 Eldorado Sevilles in par- The engine blew in the 1970s and upon disassembly, it was
determined that the cars original, standard Eldorado dualticular, I would have probably looked past it myself.
What made the 1955 Cadillac in the ad so special is that four-barrel 1955 engine had been built to the 1956 Cadillac
its an Eldorado two-door hardtop, which was not offered by displacement of 365 cubic inches. The car also had the revised
the factory until 1956. What I was looking at was the 1955 1956 Cadillac Hydra-Matic transmission, which required a
Cadillac-based Seville prototype that I had been searching for unique shift indicator lens and decal since the 1955 transmission did not include park.
since 2002.
That year, I was at GM Media Archives sifting through General Motors
files while researching Cadillac history
for the book Cadillac: 100 Years of Innovation. In digging through GMs files,
I stumbled upon a studio shot of a mid1950s Cadillac Eldorado two-door hardtop. After closely examining the photo,
I realized it had the 1955 Eldorado rear
bumper and the six 1955-only hash
marks between the bumper and bottom
edge of the deck lid. This car was not a
production 1956 Eldorado Seville twodoor hardtop, but rather a 1955 Eldorado
that was surely the prototype for the Seville that would not be offered until the
1956 model year.
Before discovering that image in
2002, I was disappointed Cadillac had
not built the Seville one year earlier.
While the Eldorado tailfins are identical
from 1955 to 1956, the different design
of the 1955 Cadillac front end has always Note the 1955 Eldorados rear bumper and the six 1955-only hash

17

Here is a studio
shot of the mid1950s Cadillac
Eldorado twodoor hardtop.

The seller also stated that the original interior was upholstered in unique
black-and-white material from neither
1955 nor 1956, but it was fashioned
on the seats and panels to the design of
1956. The interior images he sent also
showed the car had the chromed interior
appointments also found on a production 1955 Eldorado convertible.
Unique cars such as this were given
dated Shop Order numbers by General
Motors design; these SO numbers were
generally stamped on a tag that was installed on the cowl of each prototype
or factory-modified car. The seller included pictures of this 1955 Cadillacs
tag, which identified it as SO 2542 with
a build date of June 6, 1955. This relatively late production date partially explained how it was possible for the car
to have 1956 mechanical and interior
features. The complete explanation was
answered by the identity of the cars
original owner.
In 1955, C.F. Arnold was the chief
engineer of the Cadillac Motor Car Division of GM. He had joined the division in 1925 as an engineering department laboratory assistant and worked
his way up to chief engineer by 1950. In
cross-referencing a list of SO numbers
supplied by fellow CLC member Jim
Jordan, SO 2542 matched up to a 1955
Cadillac Eldorado and a Mr. Arnold
certainly the same Mr. Arnold who
was chief engineer of Cadillac, and who
would have been this cars first owner
as SO cars were built for show displays
and/or high-ranking GM employees.
(For example, Harley Earls LeSabre,
the 1955 Chevrolet Biscayne, and each
1953 Buick Wildcat concept had unique
SO numbers.)
Along with an image of the SO tag,
18

the seller sent a picture of the adjacent

cowl tag, which answered how this
unique 1955 Eldorado coupes body was
built. Rather than fitting a fixed steel
roof to a convertible 1955 Eldorado,
GM pulled a Coupe deVille two-door
hardtop from the line and then installed
the Eldorado rear fenders and rear bumper. This is how Cadillac built production Eldorado convertibles from Series
62 convertibles, although the production
Eldorado convertibles were differentiated from the Series 62 convertibles with
a different model number on the cowl
tag.
This car was not a production 1956 Eldorado
Seville two-door hardtop,
but rather a 1955 Eldorado that was surely the
prototype for the Seville
that would not be offered
until the 1956 model year.

In comparing the sellers recent images of his silver car to the light-metallic-colored car in the factory photos,
almost everything seemed to match. The
only difference was saddle trim on the
belt line of the current car the car in
the factory photos lacked any beltline
trim, even the standard 1955 Eldorado
convertible beltline saddle trim, and
recent photos of the car show a 1956
Cadillac-type beltline trim slightly different from the trim used in 1956 production.
Another minor inconsistency exists
between the March 7, 1955, date on the
factory photos and the June 6, 1955,
date on the SO tag. Jordans list of SO
numbers sometimes shows multiple en-

Old Cars Weekly News & Marketplace EXPRESS / May 12, 2016

tries for a single car, which can mean a

car went back to GM design for some
changes. Although only one entry on the
SO list exists for this car, its possible
the June date reflects a return of the car
to GM styling for updates, during which
time perhaps this trim was added.
When all the numbers and details
are added up, it appears the Cadillac in
the July 2015 The Self-Starter classified
ad is the car I have searched for on the
internet, in classified ads, in person and
through other people, such as Jim Jordan, who searched for the car himself.
As much fun as the search and discovery of my dream car has been, and
the fact that I take it as a sign that the
car was photographed on my birthday,
its not meant to be mine, at least not yet.
Im too sentimental toward my current
fleet of 55 Cadillacs to part with any
one of them to seal the deal.
The seller was listening to offers
over the $25,000 mark, and its not a
show-ready car. The original interior is
not mint and some rust repair is necessary. It would be a shame to change the
original interior since its upholstery is
unique, but the rust would have to be
addressed. Since the mintest 1956
Sevilles if you can find them are
generally worth $50,000-$75,000 on
their best days, this very-similarly styled
1955 Eldorado two-door hardtop probably wouldnt be worth much more to
anyone but the most die-hard 1955 Cadillac two-door hardtop fan, such as myself. I hope thats just the type of person
who lands this very special car. For me,
it will have to be another time.
*Special thanks to David W. Temple
for providing the GM biography of C.F.
Arnold in conjunction with this cars
discovery.

Striping it rich!
Lots of tape, time and patience combine to turn out
perfect Rally stripes on a 1967 Camaro
By Brian Earnest

praying some cool new stripes on a 1967 Camaro was

certainly a snap for owner Andy McMyler of AJs
Auto Body. Getting all the measurements, correct tape
lines and masking all done without a true template to work
off of was another story.
In short: painting stripes is relatively easy. Getting them
laid out perfectly can be a bit tricky, even for an experienced
painter such as McMyler.
The devils in the details. With any kind of bodywork
or paint work, its 90 percent prep and 10 percent product,
McMyler says. Its going to be 8 hours of layout for 10
minutes of spraying.
Before paint, the Camaro received almost all new metal
quarter panels, fenders, even roof. Unfortunately, another
shop botched the job and the owner wound up bringing the

www.oldcarsweekly.com

car to McMyler, who had to cut the body apart and basically
start over.
We had to cut apart the quarter panels and get them
brought in back to where they should be. Unfortunately hes
got a lot of money into this thing right now and were trying
to get it done without killing him on it, McMyler added.
This is pretty basic, its just laying down straight lines and
making sure everything is straight and perfect. Ive got the
original GM specs showing where the stripes go. The back
is a little trickier and the cowl vent is a little trickier because
youve got wrap it around the vents. But when you are
shooting down the hood, its just straight lines.
Once the car was ready for stripes, it took about two days
to complete the masking and paint work to install them.

The stark white Camaro will receive two wide Rally stripes on the
hood and deck lid. Each wide stripe is accented by a narrow quarterinch stripe on either side. The taping begins with straight lines down
the hood using quarter-inch 3M masking tape. Conveniently, the black
accent stripes are a quarter-inch wide, meaning the tape can be used
to get the correct thickness.

There are no templates for the Rallye stripes, but McMyler has
some sketches taken from the Internet with measurements off an
unrestored survivor car. The stripes on the hood do not line up
exactly with the stripes on the deck lid, McMyler points out. They
are spaced a little wider apart. Nobody ever notices that. The stripes
also dont go all the way to the back glass.

Ill measure as I go and put little pencil lines to make sure Im

where Im supposed to be, but its just pulling a straight line and
laying it down straight, McMyler notes. And thats just 33 years
of experience. To get the narrow accent stripe, three strips of tape
will be laid down, with the middle strip then being pulled to allow the
quarter-inch width needed for the narrow black line.

A spacer masking strip is laid down beneath the edge of the hood
opening. The hood stripes will wrap downward and end in the engine
compartment (bottom) side of the hood.
20

There is lots of trial and error involved when taping stripes. Its not
easy to eyeball lines when there are body contours involved. Trust
your measurements more than your eyes and get the tape as straight
as you can between your marks.

Old Cars Weekly News & Marketplace EXPRESS / May 12, 2016

www.oldcarsweekly.com

McMyler came up with his own template circles to help him radius
the Camaro Rallye stripes. He saves the cardboard cutouts and reuses them when the need arises.

A thicker half-inch tape strip is put down behind the rear window to
show McMyler where the rear black stripes will end and turn back.

The quarter-inch
tape works nicely
for turning corners.
Eighth-inch tape
works even better.
In this case,
McMyler sticks with
the quarter-inch for
everything because
his narrow black
stripes will be a
quarter-inch.

This middle strip of tape will be the narrow black stripe. A tech
tip: When you are using tape as a spacer like this, do not pull on it
because the tape will stretch. And as it stretches, it thins out. Youll
be way off, McMyler cautions.
www.oldcarsweekly.com

Plastic can go over the body for final masking, but not over the trunk
and hood they need to be opened and closed during spraying.
Wider masking tape is used to shield the areas on the hood and deck
lid that need to remain white.

May 12, 2016 / Old Cars Weekly News & Marketplace EXPRESS

21

The tape is what will be white. The white is what will be black,
McMyler says. Youre brain has to kind of work in reverse.

Measurements for the stripes on the spoiler and cowl are taken with
the pieces mounted on the car, but taping and painting are done
with both pieces off off the car. Masking the narrow stripes that go
around the cowl vents is among the trickiest parts of this job.

Before he gets ready

to shoot paint,
McMyler takes a few
minutes to run a firm
finger over every
tape line. Any spots
that are not stuck
down hard will allow
black paint to sneak
underneath.

McMyler gives all the areas headed for paint a final solvent wash to get rid of any pencil marks and make sure there is nothing left that could
contaminate the paint.

22

Old Cars Weekly News & Marketplace EXPRESS / May 12, 2016

www.oldcarsweekly.com

Well go over it with a tack rag just before we paint it, just to get any little pieces of dust or dirt, McMyler says. just a simple smart tack rag...
Always open up your tack rag and give yourself a nice big area to work with.

The black polyester paint is mixed 50-50 with reducer. McMyler uses a basic 3M gravity-feed gun and applies a light starter coat. It will be
followed by two more coats of black base, followed by three coats of clear. Its a solvent-based base coat. I dont use water base. I dont think
the technology is there yet. Its just my personal opinion, he says. Until its mandated I will not switch. The gun has the filter built right into
it. Im a big believer in 3M. They invented the process and everybody else pretty much copied it.

Polyester base coats are stupid simple. All

youre doing is transferring color to the car. Its
not like you are going for a shine. All you are
going for is coverage, so you can hang back, let
the gun do the work and as long as you have a
good pattern and youre overlapping your pattern
nicely youll get a good result.

The black paint needs only 15 or 20 minutes to become totally dry. Heres why using quarter-inch tape made sense. The narrow accent
Unmasking can then begin.
stripes are clean and uniform all the way around.

The entire car was clearcoated when it was painted white. The hood
and trunk areas will be cleared again now that the stripes are in place.

The freshly painted areas get another wipedown before getting cleared
to make sure there are no smudges, dirt or other debris that might
have shown up after unmasking.
A different gun with
a slightly heavier
pattern is used for
the clear, which is
a thicker solution
than basecoat paint.
McMyler will lay
down three coats
of clear. The base
coat is very simple to
spray. You can lay it
down in any direction
you want to with
the non-metallics.
The clear is going to
take a little bit more
technique and youve
got to be a little
more fundamentally
correct. You need it to
go on evenly because
if you pile it up in
one area, its going to
slide.

INTERIOR Restoration

Springing to life
Simple spring replacement can make seat backs firm and comfy again
By Brian Earnest

here are countless styles and variations when it comes to seat construction in
old cars, but they often follow a similar formula: more complicated construction for the seat cushion area (where you sit), often involving heavier gauge
springs; and a simpler setup for the seat backs, frequently using simple vertical
zigzag springs of a thinner gauge.
Rebuilding or refurbishing the sitting area of the seats can be a quirky and
challenging task involving a few special tools, hog rings and other fun stuff.
Putting new springs in a seat back is probably a lot easier than a lot of folks realize, however. Once the seats have been disassembled and the bare metal frames are
ready to go, it generally only involves pulling out the old vertically arranged zigzag
springs, cutting some new springs to fit, then hooking them in.
If its to the point where your foam is completely deteriorated, or the metal is
50, 60, 70 years old and the metal is getting fatigued its only meant to spring so
many times and then you add in maybe a mouse nest in there there are a lot
times you would benefit from changing the springs, said Chris Arendt, of Fast Freddies Rod Shop in Eau Claire, Wis. It helps if you have the right tools, and youre
looking at probably 200 bucks to buy the right tools. But you wouldnt have to have
them. It just makes it go faster.
Following is how Arendt replaced the seat back springs in a 1969 Dodge Dart.

www.oldcarsweekly.com

New zigzag springs are sold in rolls of 100plus feet (middle). These two rolls are made
of 8- and 12-gauge steel. The old springs can
be removed by bending a tab on one end of
the seat frame and by simply stretching the
spring enough to unclip it.

May 12, 2016 / Old Cars Weekly News & Marketplace EXPRESS

25

A spring stretcher is helpful, but not essential. It makes removing the decaying original springs a snap. The seat backs of the Dart have four
simple zigzag lengths that will be removed and replaced.

The new 12-gauge spring is tough to cut with a hand tool. Arendt went for a cut-off wheel to cut the new springs from the roll.

A spring end
former tool puts
a small bend in
the end of the
spring to keep it
from sliding out
of its retaining
clip. Again, its
not crucial to have
the tool. A couple
pairs of vice-grips
can also do the
job.

The retaining flanges that were pried open to get the old springs out need to be gently hammered
closed again with the new springs in place.

more and more work to be done. Hindsight being 20/20,

this should have been a rotisserie job from the onset. Without ESP, how was I to know?
Years later, Dons Charger is finally close to color, in
what we like to call final prime. As weve seen in previous tech articles in Old Cars Guide to Auto Restoration,
getting to this stage was a long, tedious haul. This would
now be a particularly inconvenient time for additional body
modifications. Don understands, but even so, the antenna
hole atop the passenger-side fender is buggin him more and
more each day. This cars aftermarket power antenna is in
the factory location, but looks like a big, old pole thats an
unsightly interruption to the flowing lines of this otherwise

sleek automobile. At this stage, were intently focused on

the smaller details. Suddenly, the pole and its hole are truly
obtrusive and theyve both got to go.
If steppin backward werent enough, our deadline is
looming. This project must be painted, cut and buffed before
summer heat again makes working with a strap-on respirator unbearable. The antenna hole patchwork should go quick
and easy. Itll also allow an opportunity to use supplies from
stock, such as top-shelf abrasives from 3M and Evercoatbrand filler products. If and when such staples are in short
supply, theyre always available through the Eastwood Company. On that note, lets begin again, by making dust fly.

Proper positioning in this double-panel

hole takes a little time. Out of sight on the
underside is a large, round speaker magnet.
Three fender washers temporarily fill the
void to support the patch in position.

In this double-panel section,

hammer-and-dolly corrections
could be tough. For this
reason, Mrs. Rotten welds
such patches solid in
increments, stitch-by-stitch,
while cooling with clean
compressed air as she goes.

Although magnets are handy for positioning such patches, they can cause difficulty when welding with
electricity as theyre known to disrupt the arc. Here, Ive asked Mrs. Rotten to give me three tack
welds. Soon the magnets will be removed.

A fresh enough 3M 36-grit Roloc

disc works well for grinding down the
highs. Always protective of primer,
caution is taken to direct sparks away
from our work.

Once again, Mrs.

Rotten has kept
distortion to a
minimum, but even
so, some hammern-dolly work is
required for this new
wavelet.

At this stage, were happy

enough with our patchwork.
Before filler work begins, 3M
Stikit 80-grit on a 6-inch dualaction (DA) sander helps to
feather away existing primers
heavier sand scratches. From
here, well continue to sand out
a little farther with 120 grit on a
proper hand pad.

For just about any

patchwork or repair where
welding is involved, we
like to begin our filler work
with a fiber-reinforced
filler such as Everglass,
which is available through
Eastwood. Later, after
primer, well take steps to
moisture-proof our work on
the underside as well.

With a form-fitting block,

sanding begins with 40
grit, then we switch to
80. Compared to more
conventional polyester
fillers, the fiber-reinforced
variety is rugged sanding.
This time were happy to
be working such a small

From here, the steps are

standard. Weve covered
filler work in detail recently,
so lets skip the Rage
Extreme mid-coat demo
and move along to Metal
Glaze blending putty. This
polyester product is ideal
for small-area skim coating.
Its thin enough to flow, and
once cured, it sands easily
with no resin goo layer to
clog the finer grits.

Because this is actually a shapely area, proper block selection

is paramount. These Motor Guard and Dura-Block tools are
Eastwood staples. The Tundra-brand Noodles pool toy (far
right) is from our local grocers seasonal items section. At this
stage, our Metal Glaze is fared and feathered into existing primer.
Right: Ordinarily we like to see things go where
theyre needed, but this aftermarket power
antenna is a goner. Its taken a beating for
years while running without the protection of
the fenders missing splash shield. Besides,
I really want to hear the sound this will make
when it meets the bottom of the can.

Prior to spot-priming, well

hang and adjust the door to be
sure the panels still transition
as before. The last time these
yet-to-be restored hinges were
adjusted, I drilled four 1/8-inch
holes in discrete locations
(through the hinges and into
the cowl). Now, using bits
as guide-pins, this trick cuts
adjustment time and it will
again during final assembly.

A few years back, Old Cars Weekly was fortunate enough to inherit a fantastic collection of car wreck photos taken
by longtime investigator and photographer Rodman Bingham of Menlo Park, Calif. According to his daughter, Patrice
Bingham Offenhauser, Rodman had a police scanner speaker in every room of the house and his car big sweeping antenna on the back. He even had a special headset speaker under his pillow... It wasnt so much being an
ambulance chaser as much as priding himself on having the first, and the best, photos of a crime or accident scene
which could then be used in the newspaper or in court proceedings. Following are a few of his memorable mangled
