The Third Sunday After Pentecost Holy Communion: June 4 and 5, 2016 Lectionary 10
INTRODUCTION
The Time after Pentecost is a teaching time, a
growing time, in the life of the church. Todays texts celebrate Gods ability
and intention to provide us with a new lease on life. To that end we gather
today with the whole people of God to be instructed by the word and
nourished in the blessed sacrament.
CHILDREN are always welcome to our Worship Service. Rainbow bags
and a cry room are available. A staffed nursery is also available if needed.
An usher will gladly provide you with assistance.
As a worship courtesy, we ask that you please turn off or set to vibrate
all cellular telephones and pagers during the worship service.
We ask that all present today please fill out the Attendance and Communion
registration card found in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate so
that we may record your presence with us.
PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE PEW
Eternal God, your love is stronger than death, and your passion more fierce
than the grave. We rejoice in the lives of those whom you have drawn into
your eternal embrace. Keep us in joyful communion with them until we
join the saints of every people and nation gathered before your throne in
your ceaseless praise, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Let us pray.
Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from
whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the
inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily
magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Let us confess our sins.
Silence for reflection and self-examination.
Gracious God,
We confess that we have turned in toward ourselves and have turned
away from you and from our neighbors. We are truly sorry and
humbly repent. In your compassion forgive us our sins, known and
unknown, things we have done and things we have failed to do. Turn us
again to you and uphold us by your Spirit, so that we may live and
serve you in newness of life through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
Amen.
God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and
made us alive together with Christ. In the name of Jesus Christ, your sins
are forgiven. By grace you have been saved. Almighty God give you faith
through the Holy Spirit that Christ may live in your hearts and that his love
may show forth the love of Christ in your lives.
Amen.
GATHERING SONG:
GREETING

CANTICLE OF PRAISE
Then the word of the LORD came to [Elijah,] saying, 9Go now to
Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and live there; for I have commanded a
widow there to feed you. 10So he set out and went to Zarephath. When he
came to the gate of the town, a widow was there gathering sticks; he called
to her and said, Bring me a little water in a vessel, so that I may
drink. 11As she was going to bring it, he called to her and said, Bring me a
morsel of bread in your hand. 12But she said, As the LORD your God
lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of meal in a jar, and a little oil in
a jug; I am now gathering a couple of sticks, so that I may go home and
prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die. 13Elijah said
to her, Do not be afraid; go and do as you have said; but first make me a
little cake of it and bring it to me, and afterwards make something for
yourself and your son.14For thus says the LORD the God of Israel: The jar of
meal will not be emptied and the jug of oil will not fail until the day that
the LORD sends rain on the earth. 15She went and did as Elijah said, so that
she as well as he and her household ate for many days. 16The jar of meal
was not emptied, neither did the jug of oil fail, according to the word of
the LORD that he spoke by Elijah. [ 17After this the son of the woman, the
mistress of the house, became ill; his illness was so severe that there was no
breath left in him. 18She then said to Elijah, What have you against me,
O man of God? You have come to me to bring my sin to remembrance, and
to cause the death of my son! 19But he said to her, Give me your son. He
took him from her bosom, carried him up into the upper chamber where he
was lodging, and laid him on his own bed. 20He cried out to the LORD,
O LORD my God, have you brought calamity even upon the widow with
whom I am staying, by killing her son? 21Then he stretched himself upon
the child three times, and cried out to the LORD, O LORD my God, let this
childs life come into him again. 22The LORD listened to the voice of
Elijah; the life of the child came into him again, and he revived. 23Elijah
took the child, brought him down from the upper chamber into the house,
and gave him to his mother; then Elijah said, See, your son is alive. 24So
the woman said to Elijah, Now I know that you are a man of God, and that
the word of the LORD in your mouth is truth.]
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
PSALM: Psalm 146
Refrain:
Tone:
Hal- | lelujah!
For I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that the gospel that
was proclaimed by me is not of human origin; 12for I did not receive it from
a human source, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of
Jesus Christ.
13You have heard, no doubt, of my earlier life in Judaism. I was violently
persecuting the church of God and was trying to destroy it. 14I advanced in
Judaism beyond many among my people of the same age, for I was far
more zealous for the traditions of my ancestors. 15But when God, who had
set me apart before I was born and called me through his grace, was
pleased 16to reveal his Son to me, so that I might proclaim him among the
Gentiles, I did not confer with any human being, 17nor did I go up to
Jerusalem to those who were already apostles before me, but I went away at
once into Arabia, and afterwards I returned to Damascus.
18Then after three years I did go up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas and
stayed with him fifteen days; 19but I did not see any other apostle except
James the Lords brother. 20In what I am writing to you, before God, I do
not lie! 21Then I went into the regions of Syria and Cilicia, 22and I was still
unknown by sight to the churches of Judea that are in Christ; 23they only
heard it said, The one who formerly was persecuting us is now
proclaiming the faith he once tried to destroy. 24And they glorified God
because of me.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

HYMN OF THE DAY: My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less (ELW 596)
CREED
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived
by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius
Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at
the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and
the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of
saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life
everlasting. Amen.

Let us pray. Blessed are you, O God, maker of all things. Through your
goodness you have blessed us with these gifts: ourselves, our time, and our

your love, through the one who gave himself for us, Jesus Christ, our
Savior and Lord. Amen.

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER
Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit,
be all honor and glory, now and forever. Amen.
LORD'S PRAYER
Risen Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom
come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our
daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who
trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.
INVITATION TO COMMUNION
Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
Happy are all who are called to this table.
Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and your
servant shall be healed.
Taste and see that the Lord is good.
COMMUNION
The body of Christ, given for you.
The blood of Christ, shed for you. Amen.
All baptized people are welcome to the table to receive Christs body and

Christ as the community of the baptized, so if you would like to become
part of the Body of Christ, we encourage you to seek baptism. If you cant

your chest for a blessing as you come forward.

Barnabas, Apostle
Saturday, June 11, 2016
Barnabas was not numbered among the twelve apostles, but the book of
Acts gives him that title. After Paul was converted to Christianity, Barnabas
welcomed him to Jerusalem, and later the two traveled together on
missionary journeys.
