Follow the steps in this order when doing task 1:


1. Understand the data correctly first and then describe it.
2. Look for order i.e: highest to lowest
3. Compare data i.e: look for contrasts and similarities
4. Highlight important details.
5. Interpret data.
Assignment 1:
For your next task, use the guideline above to make a rough plan before writing.
You have 20 minutes

Task 1:
The pie charts show the percentages for waste treatment in three countries.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make
comparisons where relevant.

Nuclear power is seen as a solution to the current energy crisis, but many feel it can
do more harm than good. Discuss both views and give your viewpoint.
Write at least 250 words
You have 40 minutes

Tips for essay:


Part 1: Planning phase
1. Make sure you understand the type of essay the prompt requires
This prompt requires a discussion essay.
2. Answer the essay question. This will be your thesis and should be 1 or 2 sentences.
Basically rephrase the prompt.
Thesis: I will discuss and give my opinion.
3. Plan the essay. What will be in the body? What will be in the conclusion?
Body: two paragraphs, one for the issue, the other against (basically present fairly both
sides of the issue).
Conclusion: will state your subjective opinion and why you are for or against the issue in
particular.
4. Construct topic sentences for each body paragraph.
Many feel that.
However, many experts also feel that...
5. Think of examples and evidence for your claims
Think of examples in the media for and against this issue
Part 2: Writing phase
6. Write your essay
Part 3: Revision phase
7. Proof read for errors and last minute changes (insert words, phrases)
