Using Oracles Sun technology in key parts of our organization has enabled us
to focus on our mission-critical work instead of on managing systems, which

David Salbego, Department Head, Infrastructure and Operations, Argonne National
Laboratory
Argonne National Laboratory, in Argonne, Ill., is operated by the University of Chicago and is
one of the U.S. Department of Energys largest research centers and one of the worlds most
comprehensive scientific institutes. Recognized for excellence in connecting basic research to
innovative technology, Argonne brings together many areas of science, engineering, and
technology. Since 1990, Argonne has worked with more than 600 companies and numerous
federal agencies, as well as other organizations. Its more than 200 research projects annually
range from studies of the atomic nucleus to research on global climate change.
Argonne relies on computing power to run its high-profile research projects as well as its core
business systems that keep the laboratory moving forward. Like most private and public
research facilities, Argonne must maintain a wide range of business applications for users
working locally and remotely. With its wealth of scientific expertise, Argonne must also
support a variety of internal and external Web portals that deliver back-office, administrative,
and communications services to Argonnes subject-matter experts.
Despite enabling its research staff to quickly develop and customize myriad specialized
applications, decentralization had limited the ability of Argonnes IT management to exercise
control over the complexityand costof its core infrastructure. To make matters even more
challenging, an assortment of server platforms and operating systems required specialists for
each technology. This meant that Argonnes central IT division had to be versed in a broad
spectrum of computer hardware, software, operating systems, and applications to support
business system users. With the drive to maximize taxpayer investment in research, Argonnes
management needed to find a more cost effective and efficient way to deliver IT services. After
careful consideration, Argonne standardized its core business systems infrastructure with the
help of Oracles Sun servers and Oracle Solaris 10. It also relies on Oracle Database as the
foundation for core business systems and upgraded from Oracles MySQL Database to MySQL
Enterprise Database and used components of Oracles Sun Java Enterprise System suite to
deploy a centralized, single sign-on Web portal for access to critical business communications
and back-office applications.
Increase Efficiency and Performance in Datacenter
To conduct its 200-plus research projects, Argonne National Laboratory employs multiple
datacenters, many of which rely on Argonnes core IT infrastructure for critical business
applications.
Over the past several years, Argonnes IT division for Computing and Information Systems has
pushed to standardize the core infrastructure to increase overall efficiencies of its business
systems.
We were spending a lot of time dealing with disparate hardware and seemingly random
operating system choices. We wanted to standardize as much as possible to focus on what
scientists need and the business applications that need to be supported, said David Salbego,
department head, infrastructure and operations, Argonne National Laboratory.
Key Benefits:
Created a single sign-on Web portal
Achieved 100% return on investment in
18 months
Saved US$50,000 a year in software
licensing and support
Provided predictable, manageable
licensing costs, with increases capped
at 5% a year
Greatly improved management and
support of core IT environment
To support its larger, critical business applications, Argonne upgraded to Oracles Sun SPARC
Enterprise M4000 Server, a powerful midrange server that is optimized for 24/7 mission
critical computing and large shared-memory applications.
Weve been impressed by SPARC technology for a long time. Its amazingly engineered to be
very powerful, but also very compact and energy efficient, Salbego said.
Argonne runs Oracle Database on its three Sun SPARC Enterprise M4000 servers, an
environment that supports all of its critical enterprise resource planning applications, such as
human resources, legal, procurement, and financial applications.
We run the heart and soul of our business applications on Sun SPARC Enterprise M4000
servers with Oracle Solaris 10, so we need a system that we can count on day-after-day and
year-after year. We have not had a single operating system or hardware failure since we installed
the M4000s in 2007, Salbego said.
Minimize Infrastructure Footprint and Power Use
For smaller to midsize applications, Argonne upgraded to Oracles Sun Fire X4200 and X4600
M2 servers.
These servers are well engineered, well built, and provide high levels of performance and
reliability, Salbego said. We use them on a variety of applicationsfrom Web infrastructure
to database systems.
Equally important is the smaller footprint of the new infrastructure.
We have limited space and limited power. Oracles Sun, energy efficient hardware works well
for what were doing, Salbego said.
Argonne also opted to standardize on Oracle Solaris 10 operating system and Ubuntu Linux for
its primary operating systems.
Oracle Solaris 10 is reliable and predictableand has what we need in an operating system,
Salbego said.
With the Oracle Solaris Containers virtualization feature in Oracle Solaris 10, Argonne can
consolidate multiple applications onto a single system, which makes it an ideal solution for
standardization. Virtualization ensures high availability, which is critical to Argonnes
environment.
Argonne has continued to expand its virtualized environment, purchasing Oracles Sun Storage
7410 as the storage foundation for its virtualized environment. Argonne deployed two Sun
7410 clusters with 80 terabytes of storage between them.
It performs really well at a low cost, Salbego said. In a virtualized environment, you need
network-based shared storage that is expandable and reliable. Storage and performance are key,
and we get both and more out-of-the-box with Sun Storage 7410, including a fantastic user
interface and sophisticated performance enhancement tools. As important, the system is
compact but hugely expandable, and we can easily manage it with out-of-the box metrics that
let us know early when we need to expand.
The IT team also upgraded to Oracles MySQL Enterprise. We had been using the MySQL
Community Server for a long time and supporting it ourselves. When Sunnow
Oracleoffered the enterprise version, providing a standardized release structure, we decided
to take advantage of it. Its a reliable, stable version of the software, Salbego said.
A lot of information technology is overheadwork every datacenter needs to accomplish,
Salbego continued. Our job is to choose products and services to minimize those costs and
efforts, enabling us to focus on the technologies that are most interesting to Argonne and its
research activities.
Argonnes central IT division also wanted to address the parallel requirement of a
best-practices solution for its software infrastructure.
Over the years, Argonne project managers and team leaders had been using an array of
development tools when necessary to build home-grown applications. Each of these tools
required a range of technical expertise and experience that taxed the capacity of the Argonne
IT team. Adding further to support headaches and user complexity was the burgeoning
population of individual and group Web portals that had to be accessed individually.
The vision for the Argonne Web portal was a unified development and deployment framework
that would enable users to securely access key applications and information, as well as business
critical processes, for improved collaboration and decision= making.
Our old system was really a hodgepodge architecture, said Ross Pallan, Argonnes portal
project manager. So many applications with separate user IDs and passwords also made it
difficult and expensive for our help desk personnel to support our users. Our big goal was to
consolidate our applications under one umbrella, with single sign-on (SSO) capability.
One of our key challenges was to provide more consistent support to our developers, Pallan
added. We determined that it would be far more efficient if users only had to learn one
language rather than bounce back and forth between several. And there were just too many
disparate Web portals for us to adequately support each one. We integrated Argonnes key
back-office and communications Web portals into a unified SSO intranet.
To create this centralized authentication capability for Argonnes roster of internal and
external users, the IT team deployed a software infrastructure stack comprising the Oracles
Sun Java System Application Server, Oracle OpenSSO Enterprise, and Oracle Directory Server
Enterprise Edition.
Because Argonne uses open-source tools to support many of its tasks, the IT team wanted to
also ensure that its software was up to-date and consistent across the datacenters. To this end,
Argonne upgraded to the Oracle GlassFish Server 8.1, available as an open-source software
stack.
The upgrade enabled Argonne to take advantage of 64-bit Java for greater performance and
flexibility. With Oracle GlassFish Server, Argonne has gained valuable session persistence and
failover. Today, the laboratory is running a number of proprietary applications on Oracle
GlassFish, including its performance appraisal system and a visitor gate pass application.
Were a big Java development environment, so we run Suns application server, now known as
the Oracle GlassFish Server, Salbego said. Weve consolidated on the Sun Web server for the
most part. Oracle Directory Server and Oracle OpenSSO form the backbone of a lot of our
authentication and authorization solutions. And weve enabled single sign-on using this whole
stack, a straightforward task with our many home-grown applications. Suddenly it looks like
its an integrated stack of applications. I love it.
Standardize and Virtualizes for Improved Performance
10
Salbego said, The feedback we have gotten from our user community indicates that the
SSO Web portal is a big success. Late in 2009, we implemented OpenSSO Express 8, which
will allow us to bring our Apache-based applications, such as Wiki and many other
home-grown applications, into the SSO fold in the future.
The Web portal has helped Argonne consolidate its Java support contracts, which now
provides predictable licensing fees.
Pallan pointed out another important outcome for Argonne, The subscription model for
deploying Sun Java Enterprise System software was much more economical than purchasing
components separately, as offered by other vendors. As a result, we estimate a cost savings of
more than US$50,000 per year in licensing and support.
Argonne also expects to achieve a 100% return on investment in 18 months.
Additionally, Salbego said, We implemented Oracles Sun MySQL Monitor with great
success, and the wealth of information provided by this tool is enormous. We also
implemented MySQL replication using Oracles Sun MySQL Enterprise to improve our
disaster recovery posture. The fact that we have Oracle MySQL Enterprise support available
if needed helps greatly.
Salbego concluded, If you add up all the benefits, our decision to standardize using Sun
products was a wise one.
Why Oracle?
To begin its standardization efforts, Argonne received bids from Sun (now Oracle), HP, Dell,
and other vendors for hardware. It ultimately chose Oracles Sun technology because Sun had
been helping Argonne fulfill its mission with innovative software, hardware, and support
services for more than 20 years. According to Salbego, it made good business sense to stay
with proven technology in standardizing the hardware environment.
We wanted something that was reliable and competitively priced, and we knew we would
get that with Oracle and its Sun technology, Salbego said.
Argonne National Laboratory, in Argonne, Ill., is operated by the University of Chicago and
is one of the U.S. Department of Energys largest research centers, as well as one of the
worlds most comprehensive scientific institutes. Recognized for its excellence in connecting
basic research to innovative technology, Argonne brings together many areas of science,

Over the last seven or eight years, we have done a number of benchmarks, and
with Sun we continue to hit the numbers that our customers require for capacity
and uptime.
Steve Taylor, Head of Architecture and Technology, Eagle Investment Systems LLC
The last few years have clearly demonstrated that the financial services industry is dynamic
and unpredictable. Today, following the financial crisis and the Dodd-Frank Wall Street
Reform and Consumer Protection Act, U.S. financial institutions face tighter regulations
and tougher standards than ever.
Eagle Investment Systems LLC, a subsidiary of BNY Mellon Asset Servicing, understands
the technology demands of financial institutions and has for more than 20 years. To continue
to meet its customers needs for data management, investment accounting, and performance
measurement, Eagle has continually evolved its product over the years to take advantage of
new technologies and deliver new offerings to new segments in the market and new
geographic regions. For the last decade, one constant in Eagles technology stack has been
the continued use of Oracle and Sun products. Whether supporting its on-premise or hosted
solutions, Eagle uses Oracle and Sun products to help drive its software and keep its systems
running at top levels.
Meeting Needs for High Performance and Reliability
Oracles Sun SPARC Enterprise servers and the Oracle Solaris 10 operating system give Eagle
the stability and scalability it requires to support financial services customers who require
large amounts of data and the highest levels of security.
Over the last seven or eight years, we have done a number of benchmarks, and with Sun we
continue to hit the performance numbers that our customers require, said Steve Taylor, head
of architecture and technology, Eagle Investment Systems LLC.
Eagles solutions have evolved over the years using several versions of Sun SPARC Enterprise
servers, and today its customers use a variety of servers depending on their size and needs.
Oracles Sun servers meet the diverse needs of our customersfrom a large brokerage that
may have many accounts and need a great deal of concurrency with horizontal scale, to a
large-scale portfolio management firm that may need enterprise-level power and availability,
to a boutique asset management company that requires a more cost-effective virtualized
solution Taylor said.
The Eagle solution is mission-critical for our customers, and it is very important that we
take advantage of the latest technology behind our software, he said.
Driving the Softwares Comprehensive Data Model
At the very heart of Eagle lies a data-centric architecture. Eagle uses Oracle Database to
support its data model and meet the processing needs of its customers. The model has
evolved to meet the changing needs of the financial services industry. The need to manage
more and more data has grown significantly.
14
Key Benefits:
Met high performance and security
needs of financial institutions
Provided a robust and scalable data
model to support the companys
software for the financial service
industry
Helped manage hosted systems
We have several customers that are multi-terabyte in size, so it is imperative that we have a
database management system that is scalable, standard to the industry, and robust enough to
provide the availability essential to our customers needs. Its imperative that it also offers
good price performance. We have found that good mix with Oracle Database, Taylor said.
Today, Eagle uses Oracle Database 11g R2 and many of its special features that sustain
performance and stability, such as partitioning. Some customers also use Oracle Real
Application Clusters, and Eagle expects to work with more customers on that product in the
coming year, given the interest in Oracle Exadata.
Each year, more customers turn to Eagles hosting business, Eagle ACCESSSM, in an effort to
reduce IT investment and maintenance costs. To manage the many systems it hosts for these
customers, Eagle leverages Oracle Enterprise Manager.
Why Oracle?
A long-time Oracle and Sun customer, Taylor noted that the research and development
resources and engineering expertise these companies provided over the years have resulted in
even greater value and credibility for Eagle. When Taylor joined Eagle in 2002, the company
was already using Oracle and Sun products, and he found that many of Eagles customers
were, as well. This was one argument for staying on these platforms, as was the price
performance. Throughout the years, as Oracle and Sun technologies have evolved, and the
companies eventually merged, Eagle has continued working with those platforms because
both companies were committed to regularly improving their products.
Implementation Process
Eagle has used Oracles Sun SPARC Enterprise servers since 2001 and Oracle Database since
2001, upgrading over the years as the technology has advanced. Often, this development has
been customer-driven.
We work in close collaboration with our customers. In some cases, we initiate looking at an
upgrade or a new technology, and in other cases our customers ask us to check something out
based on their specific infrastructure vision, Taylor said.
Going forward, Taylor noted that Eagle expects to continue to take advantage of new
technology from Oracle, from database upgrades to new products like Oracle VM and Oracle
Exadata Database Machine.
Eagle Investment Systems LLC, a subsidiary of BNY Mellon Asset Servicing, is a global
provider of financial services technology. Eagle provides leading-edge technology and services
for data management, investment accounting, and performance measurement. Eagle offers its

Gracenote provides solutions that help consumers manage, enrich, and expand their digital
media experiences. The companys Global Media Database is the most comprehensive media
database in the world, containing metadatasuch as titles, composers, and artistsfor more
than 100 million tracks and 8 million CDs in 80 languages. Gracenote technology powers
media players such as Apple iTunes, and its technology and metadata is used in mobile,
home, desktop and automobile devices used by more than 250 million consumers around
the globe.
With customers in more than 200 countries and territories, Gracenote processes an average
of 4.5 billion queries each month, and up to 17 billion during peak periods. To handle the
volume and provide customers with a consistently speedy online experience, Gracenote
needs an extremely fast, reliable, and scalable computing platform. And with its servers and
equipment spread around the countryoften hundreds of miles from company
officesGracenote needs rapid onsite technical support to keep its network operating at
peak performance around the clock.
Solution
Several years ago, Gracenote turned to Oracle and Sun for the high-performance hardware
and software solutions it needed to power its mobile music services and maximize ROI. The
company has been steadily upgrading its server infrastructure, recently migrating to Oracles
Sun Fire X2270 servers running Oracle Solaris OS, which together form the heart of the
companys front-end delivery system.
For back-end data management, including processing information from content partners,
Gracenote upgraded to Oracles Sun SPARC Enterprise M5000 servers running Oracle 11g
to economically boost system performance. Meanwhile, Gracenote enrolled in the
SunSpectrum Gold service plan to guarantee rapid servicing (within four hours) of its many
co-location facilities.
Results
The combination of Oracles Sun servers, Oracle Solaris OS, and Oracle database technology
delivered the reliability, availability and performance Gracenote needed to run its
mission-critical media services. Oracle has always been able to understand our requirements
and provide solutions that let us build an environmentthe optimal mix of hardware,
operating system, and applicationsthat ensures we never have issues with a specific load
profile, says Matthew Leeds, Gracenotes vice president of Operations.
17
Gracenote
Key Benefits:
200 percent faster performance with Sun Fire X2270 servers. The migration to Sun
X2270s for Gracenotes customer-facing media service resulted in a 200 percent increase in
server performance with no increase in energy requirements or operating costs.
Superior performance, scalability with Sun SPARC M5000s and Oracle Database 11g. This
combination of Sun hardware and Oracle software now serves as the system of record for
company data, Leeds says. It definitely gave us better performance, a higher degree of
reliability and availability, and more headroom for additional growth.
Undiminished speed at peak loads with Oracle Solaris OS. The Solaris operating system
provided faster performance that doesnt diminish at peak traffic levels. Other
environments have a knee in the performance curve, Leeds says. When you get to a
certain level of sustained load, they just arent capable of keeping up.
Cost-effective performance with lightweight database. Oracle Berkeley DB enabled
Gracenote to achieve high performance with less overhead. Berkeley DBs lightweight
database platform was key, Leeds says. It allowed us to fine tune the performance without
having to move to more expensive hardware.
Flexible cost control. The higher-performing Oracle and Sun platform gives Gracenote
more operating flexibility and better cost control. IT executives can either lower OpEx by
reducing server count, or delay CapEx as traffic continues to increase.
Green power. Oracle and Sun technology is helping Gracenote shrink its carbon footprint,
enabling the company to deliver greater processing power while consuming less electricity
and floor space.
Product enhancement potential. Better performance offers Gracenote new opportunities for
enhancing its media service. We can produce a richer, more complete product, and
continue to add features without the risk of slowing down the performance of the overall
system, Leeds says.
Accelerated time to market. The new Oracle and Sun platform has enabled Gracenote to
provide partners with easy Web-service access to its services, translating into a shorter time
to deploy Grace note-enabled products.
Maximum ROI. The integration Oracle and Sun technology delivered the best
price-to-performance ratio of any architecture on the market. Oracle and Sun gives us
maximum returns from our capital investment and keeps operating costs reasonable,
Leeds says.

pre-engineered these solutions in advance, with all of the components integrated, tuned, and
tested at the factory.
Organizations can start with a quarter rack, grow to a half rack or full rack, and connect as many
as eight full racks of Oracle Exalogic hardware (or any combination of Oracle Exalogic and
Oracle Exadata configurations) without any external switches. This extensible architecture
provides nearly unlimited horizontal scalability and eliminates the need for an ongoing
purchase, configure, test, and deploy cycle for unique configurations of hardware and software.
All of the hardware and software comes from Oracle, so we can make sure that there are no
single points of failure and that all of the various scenarios are well tested, Oracles Messinger
points out.
Architecture Discussions
In February 2010, the Oracle Consulting Enterprise Architecture team led several discussions
with PHH about how to best realize the companys goal of a Common Technology Platform.
Oracle helped us develop a reference architecture that became a blueprint for our Common
Technology Platform, says Nathan Smith, director of enterprise architecture and chief
architect at PHH. Oracle took the time to understand our business and technological
challenges. They helped us develop a roadmap for achieving our transformational goals.
We couldnt have made as clear a business case without the Oracle Consulting teams,
including the Oracle Enterprise Architecture development program, Oracle Advanced
Customer Services, and the Oracle Insight program, adds Brewer. They determined what we
had and how to reframe it in our new reference architecture.
This reference architecture now serves as a blueprint for developing individual business
solutions and deploying new applications, whether packaged or built from scratch. According
to Smith, PHH used to be a big advocate of acquiring best-of-breed software from many
different vendors, which led to its current predicament.
We always sought to find the best product for each set of business needs, which meant we
would have to spend a substantial amount of time and effort to integrate those products into
our IT environment, Smith says. When we laid out our vision for a Common Technology
Platform, we knew that we wanted to strategically align ourselves with a technology provider
that could offer us the entire technology stack. Rather than manually piecing together our
Common Technology Platform, and then dealing with all of the vendor finger-pointing when
something goes wrong, we decided to standardize on Oracle Exalogic, Oracle Exadata, and the
entire Oracle technology stack. Oracle leads the industry in multiple categories, so it was a
logical move to forge an Oracle partnership.
23
PHH Corporation
PHH took possession of its Oracle Exalogic and Oracle Exadata engineered systems in April
2011 and is currently executing its plan to create a shared services environment. Ultimately,
PHHs new Oracle Exalogic system will host the entire Oracle Fusion Middleware stack
including Oracle WebLogic Server, Oracle SOA Suite, Oracle Coherence, Oracle Business
Process Management, Oracle Application Integration Architecture Foundation Packs, Oracle
Tuxedo, Oracle Enterprise Content Management Suite, Oracle WebCenter, and Oracle Data
Integration Suite. PHH also plans to run OLAP analytics against its Oracle Essbase database
and to deploy Oracle Hyperion forecasting and planning applications in this new
environment.
In addition, PHH is migrating data from Sybase and IBM DB2 databases and standardizing
on Oracle Database 11g on Oracle Exadata. Brewer believes that having one consolidated
database will improve operational efficiency and deliver more-accurate information to the
various functional areas, not only for reporting and forecasting but also for predictive
analysis. We see a great opportunity to use our customer data for cross-selling and
up-selling between the two lines of business, he notes.
Although the Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud implementation is still in its early stages,
Brewer believes that Oracle Exalogic will enable PHH to deliver a more cohesive experience
for customers by eliminating demand for high-end desktop systems and offering self-service
capabilities via thin clients, mobile devices, and standards-based Web portals.
For example, for PHH Mortgage customers, the company handles daily reporting on the
status of each loan and manages the steps in the loan review and approval process. Brewers
team is developing mobile applications in conjunction with Oracle WebCenter that will let
clients access this information through smart phones and tablets. Financial advisors often
interact with their clients after hours or in the field, and it will be helpful to be able to grab
this information from any location, he notes.
For PHH Arval customers, the company is developing analytic applications to predict when
it is time for vehicle maintenance and to automatically send alerts to each driver via e-mail
or instant messaging. Customers can use Oracle WebCenter Real-Time Collaboration to
open channels of communication through instant messaging clients, mobile devices, and
standard Web browsers.
One of the tenets of our technology strategy is not only to combine our two divisions but to
create a consistent look and feel for users, both internal and external, Brewer concludes.
Standardizing on Oracle Exalogic and many other Oracle products will enable us to build
consistency within the middleware tier, giving us a common look and feel for reporting, ad
hoc analysis, scorecards, and many other functions.

Ask Hal Moretto, director of database platforms at SunGards Availability Services division,
what keeps him up at night, and the first thing he will tell you is high availability.
Downtime isnt an option when your companys IT infrastructure manages more than US$25
trillion in investment assets and processes more than 5 million trades each day. Thats the
processing load that financial intermediaries turn over to SunGard, one of the worlds leading
software and technology services companies.
In addition to software and processing solutions, SunGard provides disaster recovery services,
managed IT services, information availability consulting services, and business continuity
management software, serving 25,000 customers in 70 countries across virtually all industry
and government sectors. As co-location and managed services gain in popularity, SunGard is
also expanding into new technologies with cloud offerings and advanced recovery solutions.
We do recovery services. Well either manage a customers facility or well manage a
customers equipment or applications within our managed services centers, Moretto
explains. If we have an issue, I want to know if we have a solid backup. Can we restore it?
Are we doing our best from a security standpoint? And how are we doing performance
wise?
With a focus on supporting SunGards internal business systems, Morettos team is
responsible for SunGards internal Oracle E-Business Suite applications, the employee portal,
and several internally developed and commercial applications, including Oracles Hyperion.
The team also manages the infrastructure that supports the companys iStore
implementation, which is used by SunGards channel partners.
And Morettos team does a lot of product testing. We want to be our own best customer,
Moretto says. Several of our own products are key pieces of the infrastructure that we rely
on and support today. The most important of these is SunGards advanced recovery solution,
Recover point, which is set up to replicate data from the companys production sites in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to a new recovery facility in Carlstadt, New Jersey. As Moretto
describes it, implementing that solution didnt happen overnight.
Virtually Fail-Safe
When he joined SunGard six years ago, Moretto explains, the company was already running
its Oracle applications on Sun SPARC systems. But over the course of 15 years, SunGard
had accumulated a variety of classes of servers. The configurations of these systems were so
drastically different, it made our performance and QA testing a challenge, he explains.

Tata Teleservices Limited is very satisfied with the support weve received for
Oracles Sun products and the performance of the products we are using. The total
Sun suite deployed for TTL has provided us with better manageability and we
are looking forward to further engagement with Oracle on new innovations that
support a real-time environment.
Rajesh Gandhi, Assistant Vice President, VAS, Tata Teleservices Limited
TTL faced two critical challenges: managing rapid customer growth and developing new
revenue streams to compensate for a fall in the cost of traditional voice and texting services.
In both cases, technology had a critical role to play. It had to provide a highly stable and
scalable infrastructure that supported business expansion and also enabled the company to
bring new products and services to market as quickly as possible.
A good example of this approach is the VAS division of TTL, which is responsible for
hundreds of services, including games, ringtones, news, song downloads, and Web browsing.
The overall profitability of these services was a critical element and depended on several
factors, chiefly the cost of the IT infrastructure where the services are stored and managed.
Rajesh Gandhi, assistant vice president, VAS, Tata Teleservices Limited, said, We had to
add new hardware and software quickly to keep up with consumer demand, but we ended
up with a patchwork of systems and servers from IBM, HP, and Sun that became
complicated to manage and took up too much space. We wanted to consolidate this
hardware and look at ways of reducing the cost of other technologies, including our database
infrastructure.
With the help of Oracle, TTL has deployed a Sun Blade 6000 Chassis that holds 10 blades: 4
Sun Blade T6320 Server Modules and 6 other Sun Blade Server Modules.
29
Key Benefits:
Delivered stable IT platform for
business growth
Enabled the provision of 24-hour
service, whether customers are
speaking to call center agents,
downloading new services, or making
phone calls
Implemented an automated system to
replace a 10-person manual operation
to handle up to 250 provisioning and
de-provisioning requests daily
Reduced energy consumption by 45%
Gained a highly available environment
for 400 concurrent users through the
use of Sun and open source
technologies
This, with the combination of the Oracle Solaris operating system and Linux running on
SPARC, Intel, and AMD processors offers us a highly flexible environment, said Gandhi. It
also reduced our energy consumption by 45%, compared to our previous configuration.
With the server hardware successfully deployed, the next step was to consolidate storage.
We wanted fast retrieval from our storage systems, real-time backup, and the opportunity
to conduct all kinds of storage-archive management operations, said Gandhi.
TTL deployed a Sun Storage 7110 NAS with 2TB storage and three Sun StorageTek arrays
offering a total of 50TB of storage. Above all, this has enabled us to design complete
redundancy between our sites in Mumbai and Delhi and manage our growth in data, which
is much faster than anticipated, Gandhi added.
Another important aspect of the consolidation project was the widespread deployment of
MySQL Enterprise with Sun Gold Support. Although TTL had been using the low-cost
MySQL open source database for a number of years, it now wanted to extend the solution to
support the whole of its VAS business.
We selected MySQL Enterprise because it met our database operations needs, and because it
is highly cost-effective, with added support, said Gandhi. We get enterprise functionality
and stability at a far lower price than other commercial database solutions. MySQL
Enterprise has been deployed in a clustered environment.
Gandhi is delighted by the way in which the Sun server, storage, and database technology
helps TTL in the race to acquire new customers in the Indian telecommunications market.
Our customers expect us to be there for them 24 hours a day, whether they are speaking to
call center agents, downloading new services, or simply making a phone call, he said. At
the same time, they wont settle for anything less than 100% accuracy and security for
activities that rely on private data, such as billing.
Oracles Sun technology is simple, cost-effective, and completely reliable. It means that we
can get on with our business and find new, smarter ways to generate revenues with complete
confidence in our information systems, he said.
Identity Management Platform Improves Accuracy and Provides Assurance
Since 2005, TTL had outsourced its IT to Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and was using the
Sun technology to address high employee turnover at its call centers. This placed enormous
pressure on the systems administration team, which often received up to 250 requests a day
to remove staff from the system and add new hires.
We had a team of up to 10 people or more managing all these changes with spreadsheets,
said Kumar Shivarams, engagement director, Tata Consultancy Services. The sheer volume
of work threatened to slow down business and we couldnt guarantee total accuracy because
many of the steps involved manual data entry.
30
For a business that manages personal and financial data of millions of citizens, these risks
were unacceptable. In 2007, Shivarams and his team investigated the market for technology
that would automate the process of creating, updating, and deleting user accounts across
multiple IT systems.
We looked at solutions from a number of suppliers, but selected Oracle Identity Manager
because it offered the best match of functionality and value. In addition, we had complete
trust in Oracle to provide us with the necessary levels of support to deploy the technology
successfully, said Shivarams.
This level of confidence was especially important given the scale of the task involved. TTL
runs more than 75 applications that support every aspect of the business, from billing and
financials to customer relationship management and enterprise resource planning. Some
50,000 users use a set of these applications on a daily basis.
Given these figures, TCS had to take a staged approach. In the first nine months of the
project, the team assigned 10 applications and about 10,000 users to Oracle Identity
Manager. When we were certain this model was stable, we began rolling it out across the
entire business, says Shivarams.
Once live, the Sun platform replaced a 10-person manual operation and automatically
processed up to 250 provisioning and de-provisioning requests each day.
TTL has started deploying Oracle OpenSSO to provide single sign-on for a group of 14
applications that will enable employees to switch between tasks without having to enter
multiple security details.
The company also took the significant step of running Oracle Identity Manager on Oracle
GlassFish Server.
This combination of Sun and open source technologies isnt just cost-effectiveit provides
us with a highly accessible environment for 400 concurrent users, said Shivarams.
In addition, Oracle GlassFish Server offered a highly flexible environment for developers.
By fully supporting the Java Platform Enterprise Edition 5 standard, Oracle GlassFish
Server provides the technical richness required to provide real-life solutions and give
developers true freedom, said Shivarams.
TTL has been impressed by the overall quality and responsiveness of the services it received
for its Sun deployment. If we have any issues we get an immediate solution, whatever the
scale of the problem. Thats absolutely critical for a real-time business like ours, said
Shivarams.
The Oracle Identity Manager solution now provides for 50,000 users, and is one of the
largest identity management installations in India.
31
Why Oracle?
TTL invited vendors to propose a more consolidated system. When Gandhi and his team
looked at the proposal for Oracles Sun products, they immediately saw its advantages.
The Sun solution showed how it was possible to accommodate blade hardware running
different operating systems in a single chassis, which meant that we could avoid being tied
to just one vendor, he said.
Tata Teleservices Limited is among the significant players in the Indian telecommunications
industry and has 88 million subscribers. The company has over 3,000 retail outlets, and is
present across more than 450,000 towns and villages.

UAO has two campuses in Cali and is expanding into other locations through agreements
with educational institutions certified by the Colombia Ministry of Education. It has 49
academic programs with a total enrollment of 7,946 students at the undergraduate and
graduate levels.
Technology plays an important role in making certain that innovation can thrive at UAO to
benefit the entire educational community, including faculty, students, and administration.
Servers, applications, databases, and collaboration tools are crucial for providing services that
range from enrollment to the granting of degrees.
Rapid growth of the student body along with program expansion, which requires new
online tools, led UAO rethink its IT infrastructure from the ground up.
UAO now offers a virtual campus online through which the entire educational community
achieves better services from enrollment through degree completion.
This is possible thanks to the availability, performance, and reliability that Oracles hardware
and software products provide.
Better Services, More Technology
Todays students expect to select courses, access course content, and secure important
campus-related information from the convenience of their personal computer. To enable
these types of services and more, UAO knew that it needed a well-planned IT roadmap that
identified key milestones and how to achieve them.
One of the universitys most important IT goals was efficiency, both in systems and in the
processes served by those systems. To reach this goal, UAO had to update both hardware and
software.
We have a rapidly changing technology environment. Our internal and external clients,
including students, faculty, researchers, and administrators, are accustomed to having
technology in the palm of their hand. They expect the university to give them the same
access whether they are on or off campus, said Jorge Ernesto Pealoza, director of
Technology Division at UAO. To meet these requirements, our applications and servers
have to deliver high performance and high availability without compromising security.
37
Key Benefits:
Achieved nearly 100% availability of the
universitys administrative and
academic databases, and for its Web
site, which serves students, faculty,
and administrative personnel
Achieved 99.98% availability for the
database used to provide data to the
universitys portal, intranet, and Web
site
Delivered virtual access to UAO
content for students, faculty,
researchers, and the general public
For UAO, the performance of its Web applications is critical, especially for sites related to
students and faculty, where teachers provides grades and information to students and
students make transactions, such as registration. UAO relies on Oracles Sun SPARC
Enterprise T5120 servers to deliver on this requirement.
UAOs deployment of two Sun SPARC Enterprise T5120 servers running on Oracle Solaris
and implemented by Oracle Partner ComWare, focused on housing the universitys
administrative, academic and Web application databases. The deployment was also designed
to take advantage of virtualization.
The servers provide near 100% availability to ensure access to critical student and campus
data, ranging from grades to enrollment information.
We can always rely on Oracles Sun SPARC Enterprise servers for information processing.
They never crash; theyre totally secure; and they provide excellent cost benefits to the
university, Pealoza said.
Backing up the universitys data is also vital to protecting the work of more than 10,000
users, including students, staff, and faculty. UAO selected Oracles StorageTek LTO tape
drive as its storage foundation, achieving 70% greater scalability. A growing volume of data
that users need to access online, such as student grades, has to be stored for five years under
high standards of protection. In addition, UAO must maintain certain financial records for
10 years.
UAO relies on StorageTek LTO to securely store this important data. The university adds 60
gigabytes of backup information daily.
StorageTek LTO is a really fast unit and gives us independence from backup legacy systems
that do not allow that the cartridges can be read in other units different than the original
backup. With StorageTek LTO, we do a standard backup for Solaris/Linux environments, and
it gives us freedom to connect it to any machine with those operating systems and perform
backups or recoveries with the standard Unix environment commands, said Leonardo Fabio
Botero, the universitys database administrator.
Ensuring the Highest Availability
38
During the first enrollment period after we installed the solution, the availability of all three
databases was 100% during service hours from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., with scheduled
interruptions for backups in the early morning hours and on Sundays, said Botero.
The overall availability of the administrative database is 97.55%, with weekly interruptions
of about four hours on Sundays from midnight to 4 a.m. for a complete cold backup of the
databasewhich does not affect any institutional processes. During the week, UAO makes
backups without interrupting any systems, ensuring 100% availability of the university Web
site, which is primordial to UAO.
Total availability of the academic database is 97.09%. The database team performs daily cold
backups of this database because of an agreement with the vendor to have an up-to-date test
database available whenever needed, which requires that a full backup always be available.
Total Connectivity, Satisfied Clients
Without denying the importance of the academic and administrative databases, the Web
database is the most visible to students, faculty, staff, and the public. This database has
99.98% availability because it supplies data to the universitys Web site and intranet services.
UAO conducts hot backups twice weekly without affecting availability and runs a full cold
backup at the start of each registration process.
Students and community members access from any device to both the universitys intranet
and to the internet is one of the institutions main goals. It delivers this access via an
environment built on Oracle Database, Enterprise Edition, Oracle Portal, and Oracle Real
Application Clusters.
With Oracle, we have higher system availability, better load distribution, better performance
from our servers, and full capabilities to have our two nodes mirror each other with 100%
redundancy. Load balancing is automatic, with no bottlenecks, even during periods of high
usage, Pealoza said.
The university also wanted to create a flexible and robust Web site, that was easy to
administer and delivered high availability. This was especially important as the Web site is
the universitys virtual front door.
The database and hardware infrastructure described above still lacked a tool to provide Web
services, such as grades access online or verified enrollment, something that Oracle
Application Server enabled.
With Oracle Application Server, we have an integrated scheme to provide Web-based
services, Pealoza said. We implemented and integrated applications of various types from
various providerssuch as administrative interfaces to handle students invoices or an
academic application from a third- party providerwhich bring in data from various
databases. Topics range from looking up grades to finding library balances, to finding
information on health insurance. These all reside in different applications, but students can
view them in an integrated way.
39
In addition, Oracle Application Server Certificate Authority verifies the identity of all users,
such as when faculty members log on to registry grades.
Users can access the universitys Web site 24 hours a day and it is the virtual entrance to the
institution.
Oracle Portal enabled us to have the universitys Web site always operating. Among its
most important feature is the ability it gives us to separate the technical side of content
management and the traceability of changes made to the Web site, Pealoza said.
All technology infrastructure is administered with Oracle Grid control. The main benefit is
that we can see all the applications in a single screen. This way we can quickly identify
which services are available and which have problems. Oracle Grid
Control enables easy, quick, and efficient platform administration, said Botero.
Why Oracle?
Only Oracle can deliver such a high level of peace and assurance that everything will work.
We dont experiment with others, Pealoza said.
Another factor that led Pealoza to trust Oracle as a provider was the help it supplied, both
during implementation and later, which has led to a long-term relationship.
Our highest priority is to growth. In this way, we will continue migrating applications
versions in order to access new services, with more licenses and more functionality, he said.
Implementation Process
UAO deployed its Oracle environment in stages. An Oracle customer for more than a
decade, the university has been very active in the past four years.
In 2009, we needed to upgrade our hardware. We purchased Sun SPARC Enterprise T5120
servers, focusing on hosting our entire database and on taking advantage of virtualization,
with the help of Asistir and ComWare, Oracle partners, Botero said.
The university developed a strategy to distribute all the technology to new machines, and to
some older ones that were still supported at the same time.
The importance of having a partner let us know about Oracle Real Application Clusters,
and we implemented two nodes for the administrative database. Using Oracle Real
Application Clusters enabled us to run the machines on Oracle Solaris 10, Botero said.
In 2010, the university deployed StorageTek LTO and Oracle Application Server.
UAO completed all projects on time and on budget, another highlight in an ambitious
initiative.

56,000 students are now enrolled in its 12 colleges and 225 degree programs, which extend
from its 1,415-acre campus in Orlando to 10 regional campuses including Cape Canaveral
and Daytona Beach. Furthermore, the universitys popularity shows no sign of waning: since
2004, enrollment has risen almost 25 percent.
Keeping pace with that growth is the top priority of UCFs IT administrators, who each year
must contend with several critical traffic spikesthe first day of school and final grades

products. Altogether, the solution manages the universitys financials, human resources,
academic reports, online courses, class assignments, and financial aid.
UCF runs the Oracle solution on a high-efficiency hardware platform consisting of Oracles
Sun Fire X4600 M2 server, Sun SPARC Enterprise M3000, M4000 and M5000 servers, Sun
SPARC Enterprise T5220 servers, and Sun StorageTek tape and disk storage systems, which
together provide the system reliability, availability, and scalability the university needs to
meet peakand everydaydemands.
Bob Yanckello, UCFs chief technology officer, estimates that recent upgrades of the
hardware platform along with server virtualization have reduced data center cooling needs
along with the universitys power consumption and energy costs, and has allowed central IT
to provide additional services to the campus without investing in more server rooms.
Through the use of Sun hardware we have been able spin up hundreds of virtualized
servers, many running mission critical applications, at a greatly reduced cost to the
university, he says.

To ensure timely access to Oracle expertise, particularly on heavy-volume days, the university
relies on Oracle Advanced Customer Services. Advanced Customer Services gives us
expedited response to service requests, top-priority issue resolution, and access to deep
technical expertise anytime we need it, says Yanckello. I can rest easy knowing that Oracle
and Sun experts are standing by to help us during peak times.
Results
The combined Oracle and Sun solution has yielded several notable performance and
efficiency gains, which over time have created a heavily relied upon, robust and stable
system. And thanks to new self-service options, the university has been able to manage
swelling administrative tasks without adding any new staff.
The fact is, the budget doesnt permit us to grow the offices and resources to a level where
we can serve people in person, acknowledges Yanckello. Even if you had the budget, you
couldnt hire people fast enough keep up with it. But when you put everything online, you
can.
