Connect Packet: Letter

Hello and welcome:

We are so glad that you chose to check us out. Our guests are important to us, and we want to
provide you with additional information to help you discover who we are and where we are headed
as a community of people following Jesus.
In February of 2009, Allen Coleman became the Preaching and Theology Pastor at Epic Faith.
Since his arrival we have made “epic” changes as a community and continue to be excited about
moving forward into a fresh vision with a renewed passion for our community and the gospel.
At Epic Faith we are passionate about worship, the Scriptures, community, and Jesus--because he is
passionate about us... and you. We strive to let the scriptures speak into our daily lives and frame
our individual circumstances, to let God’s story come alive in contemporary life. We hope you find
this place to be a place of authenticity, a place where you can ask questions and struggle with your
doubts. We aspire to be transparent about our imperfections, acknowledging that we don’t have it
all together. It’s at the place of our imperfections that we often experience God most profoundly.
We want Epic Faith to be a perfect place for imperfect people. And we hope this is a place where
you feel you can just be you; after all, we are all going to be just us, unapologetically.
We hope you will peruse the few pages in this packet and continue to investigate Epic Faith. Please
introduce yourself next time you stop by. If you have any questions about our community, please
email us, call the church office, or stop by the Connect Center any Sunday.
Again, welcome to our story, we’re glad you came.

The City
Online Network

Epic Faith utilizes “The City” as our primary

manner of keeping people informed about
what’s happening. Part social network, part
informational hub--it’s a great place to
connect, share stories, view events,
volunteer, give and generally plug into life at
Epic Faith.

You may sign up for The City at the

Connect Center or at www.epicfaithcity.com.

Community Groups
Community Groups are the primary vehicle for discipleship at Epic Faith. We gather in community groups with our
friends and neighbors to live life together and experience the gospel in ways we can’t on our own. They are a place
to wrestle with the truths of the Bible, love one another, serve the county, and participate in the mission of God for
Epic Faith. We were created for community for the Glory of Jesus and for our great joy. Whether you are new to
our church or you have been hanging around waiting for an opportunity, there is a Community Group in your
neighborhood that is waiting for you. You can find Community Groups on The City or for questions, email
jim@epicfaithchurch.com.

Paradox ( Student Ministries)

If you are the parent of a middle school and/or high school student, Paradox is their place to connect. Paradox
exists to lift Jesus up as the greatest, one student at a time. Worship, teaching, food, and lots of fun are the
mainstays at a Paradox gathering.

Membership

At Epic Faith, membership is more than putting your name on a roster and showing up. It implies meaningful
relationship and joining the mission God has given us: engaging the culture, making disciples, and planting
churches. Membership, which renews yearly, is open to any follower of Christ who senses God asking them to call
Epic Faith home. Becoming a member carries with it the implication that you agree to adopt our doctrine and core
passions (which are found elsewhere in the packet).

If you are interested in membership, please email dian@epicfaithchurch.com.

Connect Packet: Core Passions

Passionate About Worship

John 4:20-24
In this scripture, Jesus significantly de-institutionalized, de-localized, and de-ritualized worship. The emphasis is
taken off of ceremony and seasons, places and forms and is shifted to what is happening in the heart. True
worship is a life led by Jesus in "truth and spirit". “Everyday”, “all the time”, and “all of life” worship is our
passion.

Authentic Community
Matthew 6
Jesus is relentless about our community being an intimate, honest reflection of an intimate, honest relationship with
Him. It’s easy to say the right things, do the right things, and know the right things; but these “acts of worship” are
disingenuous, at best. At Epic Faith, we aspire to be transparent about our problems, our humanity, and our sin. It is
our conviction that intimacy with God and each other is based on truth; anything less is hypocrisy.

Sufficiency of the Scriptures

2 Timothy 3:10-17
We believe the Bible is the inerrant word of God, that the scriptures are sufficient for the time they were written
and for today. We are passionate about the relevancy of scripture to our living. We aspire to be a community that
doesn't "pick and choose" the parts of the Bible that are convenient for our lives, but humbly submit ourselves to
His Word, as it is the key to life, wisdom, and joy (Psalm 19).

Speaking Gospel Fluency

Romans 1:16
We are passionate about partnering with God to redeem the culture in which we live. Our mission is to engage
Marin with the saving power of the gospel.

Incarnational Living
John 1
Just as God pitched his tent and lived among the culture through Jesus, we are passionate about continuing that
mission in our culture. Beyond words, the gospel is communicated through our lives that reflect the reality and
power of God’s love.

Oneness of the Church

Ephesians 4:1-16
We are passionate about unity. We seek to respond to division swiftly and offer reconciliation graciously. We seek to
promote the common good of the body, choosing self-sacrifice over self-seeking.

Need for Relevance

1 Corinthians 9:19-23
We are passionate about putting aside our preferences for the benefit of the culture we seek to redeem. We are
aware of the cultural landscape so we can effectively communicate God’s grace and truth. Relevance is not just a
nice idea, but a biblical concept exemplified by the early church.
Connect Packet: Elders

Epic Faith practices the Elder-led model of leadership. We believe it most closely follows the New Testament
pattern for church leadership. Scripture throughout the Epistles (letters) contain instructions about this form of
leadership. There is no precedent for the separation of roles between Elder and Pastor.  In the Greek ( in which the
New Testament was written), “Elder” and “Pastor” are the same word. Therefore, an Elder is a Pastor and a Pastor
is an Elder. A plurality of Elders helps protect against heresy, false teaching, pride, and the unqualified. Finally, since
different Elders have different gifts, a wide range of ideas and wise counsel are brought into each discussion. The
qualifications for Elders are found in 1 Timothy and Titus 1. We have a very thorough and public process for Elder
selection.

At Epic Faith, all Elders are equal. One Elder is selected as Moderator, but that is primarily to plan the agenda and
facilitate meetings. Some Elders may appear more prominent than others, but that is a function of giftedness rather
than position. The responsibility of being an Elder is a very serious matter. It is God’s work that we are doing (Titus
1:7), not ours, and we will have to give an account to God for the way in which we lead (Hebrews 13:17).

Allen Coleman
Preaching & Theology Pastor

A southern California native and former

Marine, Allen moved to New Orleans and
then to Orlando during his successful career
with a Fortune 500 company. After giving his
life to Christ, no one was more surprised
than Allen that God had bigger plans for
him.

In 2001, Allen began to pursue his calling in

ministry. He had the opportunity to develop
and grow two student ministries at two
churches in Florida before coming back to
California, where he led the youth and young
adult ministries at Santa Cruz Bible Church.
In February 2009 he moved his family to
Marin and accepted the position of Peaching
and Theology Pastor at Epic Faith Church.

Allen is married to his best friend, Shannon,

and is father to 4 beautiful children: Kaelyn,
Tyler, Zachary and Faith. When he’s out
having fun, you’ll find Allen playing with his
kids, riding his Harley, pulling for the
Raiders, or hopelessly addicted to Fox’s
“House”.
Connect Packet: Ministry Teams

At Epic Faith, service is the expression of love - love for Jesus, for one another, and for those who don’t yet know
Christ. Because service is an act of worship to Jesus, well never try to “guilt trip” you into serving. Do we need
your help? Yes. Will we force your help by trying to make you feel bad? No, never.

That being said, most people do end up wanting to serve in some capacity. Below is a list of ministries and their
leaders. If you have a heart to serve in our community, first, pray about what Jesus would have you do; then
volunteer on The City or contact the ministry leader on the chart below to see how you can plug in!
