Course Description
English I is a rigorous course designed to challenge students in preparation for college level work.
The skills necessary to succeed in this course are: independent thinking, critical reading, and clear
and concise writing. The course follows the Texas Essential Knowledge Skills (TEKS) for English I,
as well as the guidelines set forth by the College Board in the SpringBoard curriculum.
Textbook
The textbook, SpringBoard: level 4, will be provided by the district. The SpringBoard textbook is a
workbook, and you will receive formative grades for completing the work in it. We will also use the
Glencoe: Texas Treasures textbook. Students will be able to download this book from the IISD
Textbook Server or via an online link. A class set of the Glencoe textbooks will remain in the
classroom.
Online Class (classroom.google.com)
Students will be able to access assignments, and other necessities through this program. All students
are expected to enroll in the course concurrent with their class period. The access code will be given
by the teacher
School Email Account (Yourschoolusername@stu.irvingisd.net)
Every student has a school Google account. You are expected to use it when you email teachers. You
need to check your emails daily for information about the class.
You will also use Google Apps for Education to create documents, presentations, essays, and various
other assignments.
Homework
Not all assignments will be completed in the classroom. Students are expected to spend their own
time in preparation for this course. Writing assignments, vocabulary study, and independent reading
are examples of the types of homework to be expected in this class.
Grading
Grades will be determined in accordance with the IISD grading policy:
60 % Major Grades (Tests, Essays, Projects)
40 % Minor (Daily Assignments and Homework)
Please make sure that you read and understand the grading policy found on the district website.

Late Work

If a student fails to submit a major grade by the due date, the student will be given one week to make
up the assignment and show mastery of the content. If a student fails to submit a minor assignment
by the due date, a 0 will be placed in the grade book. Minor assignments will not be accepted late.
Absences and Makeup Work
It is necessary to be present every day to receive a quality education. When students are absent, it is
the responsibility of the student to make up any missed work. The district grading policy states that
students have the same amount of time of an absence to make up missing work.
Chromebook Usage
According to IISD policy, chromebooks are to be used for education purposes only. Violations will
result in loss of use of chromebook and/or confiscation. Students are not allowed to be on their
chromebook unless they are working on an assignment for English class.
Tutoring
Tutoring will be available on Tuesday mornings from 8 to 8:30, and Thursday evenings from 4:205:00. Tutoring times are subject to change, so check your emails daily for updates. In order to come
to morning tutoring, you will need a pass from either me or your parent. Any other times outside of
the offered times must be scheduled with the teacher.
Behavioral Consequences
I expect all students to follow the student code of conduct. Each student has the right to an education,
which should not be impeded by the behavior of others. If a student does not follow the student code
of conduct, appropriate actions will be taken (conference, detention, parent contact, office
referral).
