UNDERBALANCED DRILLING
When drilling underbalanced you
intentionally keep the hydrostatic weight
of you drilling fluid at a lesser value than
the known reservoir pressure. This
pressure can be naturally attained with a
light drilling fluid or it can be induced. This
induction can be achieved by adding natural
gas, nitrogen or air to the liquid phase of
the drilling fluid. If the underbalanced state
is attained naturally or by induction the
resulting situation at surface is the same.
The influx from formation or induction must
be circulated from the well and controlled
at surface.
Lowering the hydrostatic pressure at
surface adds many benefits to a drilling
operation:
The well bore is kept cleaner, the
gassified fluid moves up hole more
consistently as BHP can be controlled at
surface.
The reservoir is not plugged by drilling
debris as it is in a constant state of influx.
This will increase productivity and
decrease fluid losses
Having the well in a state of influx, assisting
the drilling operation, greatly enhances the
drilling operation as real time date retrieval
is available. This allows the drilling process
to be site specific allowing the drilling
program to be tailored for the well being
drilled and not a compilation of past results
and/or mistakes.
UNDERBALANCED DRILLING
ADVANTAGES
Control of Well Bore
Well flows naturally, producing formation
is open
Little or no fluid enters the producing zone
BHP is controlled and monitored
Allows for analysis of the virgin reservoir
Clean
Loss of well control is greatly lessened
Closed control of cuttings, gasses and
fluids
Gasses can be re-injected or produced
while drilling
Reduced mud pit volumes, controlled
cleanup
Evaluation
Real time information available while
drilling
Production values can be monitored/
tested while drilling
Drilling program can be modified to suit
production
Economics
Less fluid costs
Less disposal/ trucking costs
More real information
More production from sensitive formations
No cleanup time
Production testing part of drilling

UBD PERSONNEL
Underbalanced Drilling Supervisor
Controls drilling operation has a great deal
of experience in UBD, Drilling, Pressure
Control and workover techniques. Works
on location to coordinate services and
work with well site representative and
engineering personnel.
Underbalanced Drilling Operator
He is highly experienced in all facets of
UBD, Snubbing, Hydraulic Workover,
Drilling, Well Servicing and testing. Sets
up and operates all UBD surface
equipment.
Operations Superintendent
Direct liaison with Oil Company, has
complete operational and engineering
experience. He directs all High Arctic
personnel with the support of the Drilling
Engineers.
HSE coordinator
Provided through S.E.A.L. International
(High Arctic Affiliate) can identify any
hazards related to the operations by means
of HAZIDS and HAZOPS. He is trained
in hazard identification and risk
management. Provides training liaison
with High Arctic Training Centre and directs
and assists field operational staff.
Data Acquisition
The real-time data from location is collated
and relayed to the Oil Company
representative in the field and can be
relayed via satellite to head office in report
form and during operations.
Project Management
High Arctic Well Control and its Affiliates
can coordinate and develop a complete
UBD program. We can also direct this
program from within the Oil Companies
organization to the field level
